Ah, the loafer, my favourite style of shoe! Right now, I have 14 pairs of loafers in my rotation (not counting my driving mocs or opera pumps) and I hardly ever put an outfit together where I could not at least imagine a fitting pair of these slip ons. I do own them in a wide variety of styles with 5 horsebit and 5 penny loafers being the most featured types, followed by 2 tassel loafers and rounded out by one plain and one string (with kilties). So yes, I really love them!
Loafers are my day-to-day casual shoes. I wear loafers the way most people nowadays wear sneakers.

I’ve recently been wearing a black bit loafer more lately. I feel that it fits so many casual situations so well - very versatile.
Loafers are the best for air travel. My experience with tassel loafers is they look good initially but can be hard to maintain if worn outdoors on a regular basis. If they get wet they will get curly etc.

I am a penny loafer guy and my favorite loafer right now is the wejuns from GH Bass. I am a 1950's style guy.
My favourite loafers are the Boston and Cavendish from Crockett and Jones and for a more budget friendly option, Russell and Imperial from Loake. I wear them at least couple of times a week with suits,trousers or chinos.
I own 3 pairs of Tricker's loafers -- a James in black, a James in brown, and an Adam in brown suede. Great British loafers. I used to have a C&J Merton -- great looking shoe. I have five pairs of JM Weston 180 loafers -- dark brown calfskin, medium brown calfskin, black calfskin, dark brown suede and blue suede. The Westons are my favorites.
I always wear a loafer. They’re clean and come in casual or formal, round toe, square toe. I like a light, narrow shoe. I never wear a chunky shoe, a brogue shoe or a boot in front of other people if I’m not working. I love Tod’s, la quaranta and some Donald pliners. Coulaincourt of paris are my favorite shoe maker and always have nice loafers.
I totally agree with your assessment of Gucci loafers. Since everyone is going to be adding suggestions, let me throw the brand name Carmina into the mix. They offer a great selection, both in styles and leathers, of quality constructed loafers.
Yes I have a pair of Carmina suede loafers. My only problem is that the insoles kind of slide around so I added in an extra foam insole and it wears fine now.

I got a pair of dark brown suede loafers a few months ago, I’ve been wearing them probably two times a week since. Extremely versatile and comfortable!
My first port of call when it comes to footwear would always be C&J, and indeed, i have a pair of boston loafers along with a pair of brighton loafers from loake that go well with jeans. My favourite pair however are a beautiful pair of Hudson loafers from Joseph Cheaney. Personally i would stear clear of any type of horsebit as in my book they have the air of the spiv about them.😊
In fact CJ have been carrying a loafer for many years - the Cavendish. It is a great shoe! Unfortunately, I have trouble finding a loafer last that works for me!
I have a pair of Allen Edmond penny loafers in Ox Blood color. Leather upper. I am not fond of the bit loafer style personally. Like Cary Grant said If you aim for the middle you will not go far wrong. Allen Edmonds sell in the United States. The Style is called Randolph. Frequent sales, and factory seconds. Having watched your channel since inception I am guessing you will stay with your Northampton crafters. by preference. Makes sense as they are excellent shoes and local to you. I was mildly surprised you did not suggest the questioner try e-bay as a less expensive experiment? I do enjoy you videos. Thank you.
I agree what boat shoes are for boats. I have a pair of Tricker's Cornish boat shoes that are very nice for those situations. My only pair of loafers are a pair of Tricker's Havard (Jermyn Street last) in brown suede and leather soles. Excellent shoes! If I invest in another pair, it would be the C & J Harvard in Cordovan.
I've got three pairs of penny loafers; one black and two oxblood. I wear them with a casual outfit; sport coat, shirt and tie, chinos or flannels. If I had a "casual" suit (light gray, blue gray, tweed), I think I could wear loafers with that.

Update : Having looked at a multitude of loafers (and believe it or not almost buying another pair of chukka boots!!), I ordered a pair of Loake Hornbeam in Mahogany today.
They seemed a good medium range price and hopefully are good quality!
Hopefully they will be delivered this week so that I can wear them in before the summer holiday 👍

Cary Grant and David Niven wore loafers from time to time. I think penny loafers, but usually sleeker than Weejuns.
Weejuns got a style bump by being worn for a song and dance scene in Barbi, worn by Ken and his backup dancers.
And you mentioned David Cameron wearing loafers, and I would add that it is quite common to see American President Joe Biden wearing black loafers. Interestingly, during a recent meeting with Egyptian President El-Sisi, Biden wore his black penny loafers, and El-Sisi was wearing a pair of what looked like Chelsea loafers. They were low slip on shoes, but with elastic gussets.
Perfectly appropriate with a suit except for the most formal occasions, and also versatile enough to be worn with jeans and a blazer, or even polo shirt.
The fit is important. The heel needs to be fairly snug to keep the foot from slipping out as you step. Pay attention when fitting.
I was looking at some woven leather loafers just the other day looked ideal for the warmer weather, nicely timed video.
I find it difficult to get beyond the image I have of loafers being akin to wearing a pair of house slippers Ash. As a consequence I have never owned a pair. Having said that, a friend bought a pair of light brown suede loafers recently and I must admit they do look smart under a pair of light Summer chinos. You have persuaded me to look a little deeper into the possibility of changing my footwear style.
Ash, have you had a look at the Loake Imperial loafers? Well worth a look. They’re about £235, so a bit cheaper.
As a tip with any loafer, for a perfect fit I would try half a size down, as with no laces they can be a bit looser.
I have tried on lots of different loafers and most didn’t fit correctly. Except crocket and jones and M&S loafers. Bought a pair of dark brown suede loafers from M&S to see how many times I will wear them. Before I spend the money on C&J .
Recently got myself a pair of Espresso brown James penny loafers from Trickers factory outlet. Half price because of a slight mark on the apron front which is barely visible. Worth checking out for a bargain.

Greetings Sir! I have a pair of brown "Penny" Loafers that are brown, semi Goodyear Welted. That is the toe end as the sole tends to split cross ways.
I wear them only at home, (I wouldn't be seen dead away from home, I wear Black Capped Oxfords when going out).
Some people call them slippers. Maybe so, mine are 9/43 although my real size is 8/42, they are comfortable to wear at home!
I also have a pair of black penny loafers (Size 8/42) that goes with my Whole-cut, Black Capped Oxfords (plain) and Brogue Oxfords (winged).
Also I have a pair of 3 eyed brown boat shoes that I wear at home as they are very comfortable like on grave and rough surfaces!
I have a pair of dark brown suede Crockett and Jones Boston loafers that I would recommend due to their incredible versatility. My Alden cordovan loafers, and C&J Black Cavendish tassel loafers get a lot less wear in comparison...
I’m more of a boot guy. I currently have the grant stone travel loafer which is my most worn slip on shoe. The problem with loafers is sizing & heel slipping which can be an annoyance. I don’t think I’ll get another loafer but if I do I would like a bit, seem more fun to have. Penny & bit seem to be a good balance on the formality scale.
Love to see Sanders and Sanders getting some love. I have a pair of their Chelsea boots which are basically perfect. Bought a pair of their country boots (after being inspired by one of your videos) recently and couldn't be happier.

Allen Edmonds and they are a nice option to have.
Penny loafers are the most useful design there is. It’s a good idea to rotate one’s shoes, of course, so I’d recommend two pairs of loafers, one black - to rotate with oxfords - and one brown - to rotate with a pair of chukkas for casual wear.
Looking at what you wear in your more casual days (cardigan today for example) as well as using earth tones a nice pair of brown suede penny loafers should fit your shoe collection very well.
I own 6 pairs of loafers myself- black leather penny loafers (Grensons) , coffee brown suede and dark brown leather loafers (by Doucal's, Italy) , tan horsbeit loafers ((Ted Baker) and light beige and olive green suede boat loafers. It's a lot of versatility I get out of loafers for use from the ball room to the beach.

Own few pairs both Calf leather and Suede .
I have 4 pairs of loafers. As a kid in the early 80s the preppy look was huge but also the 50s rockabilly loomed large large as well and the crossover between them was penny loafers. Both groups wore the beefroll penny. I’ve been a huge fan ever since. My favorite brand/model is the Allen Edmonds Randolph, but Alden has some really nice ones as does Carmina.
James Bond wore Sanders & Sanders chukka boots in “Spectre” during the final part of the movie.
Is that true? I thought they were C&J. Daniel Craig is a well-known devotee of the brand.
@@daniell2217 It is true. I own a pair. They are really comfortable, but the crepe sole isn't long lasting. Also Steve McQueen used to wear them as well.
It's great that you make recommendations for any budget; thanks to your videos, I try to ensure I get the most value for my buck. Crockett and Jones has, in my opinion, the best tassel loafer in the world, which is the Cavendish. For Penny loafers, I'd love what Saint Crispin does, as well as Gaziano and Girling, but I think the best value for the buck here would be TLB Mallorca, Carmina, Joseph Cheaney from the English side and, I have to say I am personally surprised with Tricker's and CNES from Singapore.
Can highly recommend Oliver Sweeney loafers look for the ones with Bologna construction very comfortable out of the box which only improves with wear around £300 although well worth waiting for the regular sales
Hey Ash, as we just had Memorial Day here in the States, thanks for your service! Actually boat shoes are the first and only pair of loafers I have and they’ve been a little bit of a revelation. As I don’t have a lot of money right now the Bass Weejun may be next on the list.

Great video as ever Ash. I have 5 pairs of loafers in various configurations. I like the relaxed look but the elevated style of the shoe that you just don’t get with other styles.
I have a pair of Herring leather soled tassle loafers, they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. I wear them everywhere. If I look inside the shoe the footbed has completely molded to the shape of my feet to the point I can see the depression marks of each toe. They are perfect for travelling in as they are comfortable and easy to slip on and off when needed.
I have a Brown leather pair from Dune, a Black leather & Brown Suede both by Loake, much like yourself, I never wore them until a couple of years ago now they are my goto shoe for the summer.
I love loafers. They're so versatile and preppy. But I always feel weird in them - and reach for suede chukkas instead. Maybe I should try loafers in suede. Maybe that's the key.
I have been looking at Suede Chukka boots instead, as I genuinely can't find a pair of Loafers that I like! How do you find Chukkas for summer wear?
@@thewolfman6854 They're good for summer wear, as long as it's not blazing hot. I personally don't wear them with shorts, but they're brilliant with chinos, jeans, almost anything else - very versatile. Perfect for spring and autumn.
If you're looking for a good entry level pair, I do think the Thursday Scout is a great choice. I have a pair with a crepe sole, and it feels more-or-less like wearing sneakers.

I'm not a loafer fan but that is more to do with my feet and mismatched heel and toe width.
Just to clarify, C&J have lots of loafers in their range, at least a dozen models but only one horse bit loafer as you mention.
If I was you I'd look at Loake and Barker as well as Sanders for your first loafer as you may find you don't wear them as much as you think. Make a C&J classic loafer as your second purchase if you find you're using them a lot. The Boston and Harvard are the classic models.
I also feel I must defend the boat shoe. The moccasin construction makes them very comfortable and flexible and some of the oiled leathers are surprisingly high quality for their modest prices (compared to GYW footwear). They also tend to be at least partially hand sewn (abroad)
I do accept they should be casual only footwear but work well with both jeans and chinos and also with shorts. My favourite brand is Orca Bay which have fully leather lined models made the traditional way, with good quality oiled leather uppers at very good prices.

Hi Ash, thank you. I have always had two minds about loafers. Yes, I have a few, including a Duke & Dexter brown and white round-toe spectator originally introduced and worn by our abdicated King. Those really can make an impact! Here is the problem with loafers, and that is the fit. A Blake-made shoe will be easier to wear than a stiffer Goodyear, at least for the wear-in. There is nothing worse than a loose-fit loafer for the wearer. Unless they are bespoke, the disappointment level is very high, even if ordered to size.
I agree; NEVER, EVER, wear loafers without socks! The hidden ones are fine. Please do not wear crepe soles; they will look dirty in minutes.
Last comment! Those horse-bit loafers are so old and passe. You will date yourself immediately. Tassle or plain pennies, please!

I also prefer oxfords and derbys and therefore don't wear loafers a lot, but i do like belgian loafers for the summer.
I own two pairs of loafers, one in a medium reddish brown leather with tassels, and the other a medium brown penny loafer with a basket weave on the top panel of the upper, both made by Allen Edmonds.
I find they are a bit cooler in the heat of the summer than a pair of oxfords, and they provide the opportunity to show off patterned socks in the warmest months when I may not be wearing a tie and want my socks to contribute a bit of extra colour and sartorial interest.
Ash I wore Penny loafers in highschool and also wore a single Monk strap. I still have a pair of penny loafers to slip on to run to the grocery or short trips. Cheers Ron
Never really thought of myself someone who would wear a loafer, but sure enough as I get older and find myself taking my shoes on and off a lot with working from home more I have been looking at picking up a pair for the summer months. Will probably get a low price pair at some point just to see if I will wear them. Then I will invest in a pair later if I do. Great summary video Ash. Thanks!
Interesting timing… I just recently bought my first pair of loafers. I have been thinking about it for a while as I have strived to become more stylish and better-dressed. I always resisted because I thought they just looked too old fashioned for me. I finally bought a fairly inexpensive pair of burgundy Florsheim penny loafers. I quite like the look, and they seem to be extremely comfortable-very lightweight and nicely moulded to my feet. I haven’t had a chance to wear them outside yet, as the weather here has been quite rainy since I got them. The one thing I regret is that the pair I bought have a very shiny patina which I think might limit their usability for the casual outfits I had in mind: chinos, linen trousers, possibly shorts. If I were to do it over, I would get a more natural burnished leather finish.
Hey Ash, love your content. However, I think you're off a little with Gucci Jordan Loafers. They are actually super comfortable and very well made. I recently got a pair in dark brown and they're worth the money. Very elegant and I think they will hold up for years. I would highly recommend them!
Gucci Jordaan loafers and Ferragamo drivers are the two most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned right out of the box.
Yep and actually the sole on the Gucci Jordan Loafers are thin but Blake stiched..

Love it! "We don't wear boat shoes unless we're on a boat". Loafers are a great summer choice though personally, I don't like the "no sock" look. I didn't realise they came from a Norwegian moccasin-type shoe.

Is a slip-on the same as a loafer? As in the books, James Bond hated shoelaces.
I am 74 years and Love Shoes. I do not gamble, drink or do drugs but I Love Shoes. Primarily Loafers. My favoite Brand is an Italian Line called BonToni followed closely by John Lobb and Crockett and Jones, Between those three makers You will find any configuration You Like. Lastly, could not resist , Alden is a very straightforward American Brand that is attractive, straight forward style wise, extremly well made and fairly priced. And an Honorable Mention to Carmina which is well priced, quite attractive and very well made, Vive Espana.

TLB Mallorca have a great selection of loafers, They have a main line a more expensive artista line or you can customise your own, chose the last (each last has 4 different widths) choice of leather is great and different soles. Definitely worth a look
I can thoroughly endorse the Sanders Loafer. I have an Aldwych model in snuff suede, leather soles and it's been a summer workhorse over the last three years and still looks like new. I also own an Edward & James (made by Berwick) black leather loafer, Loake Eton in brown suede and a Berwick brown leather loafer. All of them have been fantastic. Wearing them on a recent holiday to Cyprus, you cannot fail to notice how shockingly poor the Northern European men dress, especially us Brits and its only getting worse. I think I was the only man wearing loafers, whilst all the rest wore trainers or plastic flip flops. A decent polo shirt or a casual short sleeved linen shirt, tailored shorts and loafers with invisible socks and you already look better than 99% of men on your holidays.
The chatham G2 are just so comfortable though, the suede is remarkable
I no longer have any loafers in my collection. The one I had was a wingtip with tassel and leather sole. Quite formal in appearance and comfortable.

I'm considering getting some pleated shorts with side buckles & the only thing I can think to wear with them is suede loafers. This is quite a change as I have had a lifetime hatred of loafers, believing they only looked good on Japanese school girls. God help me 😭

I’ve owned a pair of hard wearing Goodyear welt, LL Bean penny loafers. The only reason they are no longer in my closet is my feet have changed over the dozen years I owned them.
Here’s a question: I notice in many of the Fleming 007 novels along with his various preferences, Bond wears “moccasins” which I have always assumed were “loafers.” It seemed an odd shoe for an action hero simply because along with comfort comes the risk of losing a shoe as you fight or run. Curious, no?

I can recommend the Swedish brand Myrquist loafer "Stenhammar" that costs approximately 210 GBP in Sweden. They are made in Portugal and Goodyear Welted.
I got a pair of Gucci’s for my beach wedding. Price is definitely egregious for what it is, but it’s iconic.
Myself yet to get loafers footwear to my wardrobe so far my dress shoes are from Amberjack and Latheo and Girotti brand
Hi Ash! Recently discovered your channel and am enjoying the content. Also considering loafers to go with chinos although I already possess smart, dark brown Oxfords, dark brown suede Chelsea boots and brown leather sneakers. Do I really need loafers as well? What's your opinion on Oxfords with chinos?
They work perfectly well. No need to invest more in loafers.
Speaking about horsebit loafers, I ordered about a month ago a custom pair from Carmina, as they had a discount for their custom program.
Straps and heelcounters are in alligator leather and the rest is funchal calf, both in black.
Chose to go with nice details such as cuban heels and green lining, as on vintage Gucci ones.
They cost me £615, including shoe trees and brass toe taps, which is again less than Gucci's basic model, and dare I say, a bargain for shoes with alligator leather touches.
I strongly advise you to have a look at their range!
The other two loafer models I'd love to get are the Edward Green Montpellier (full strap penny loafers) in brown, and the Crockett & Jones Vincent 2 (tassel loafers from their handgrade range) in burgundy Cordovan, but it's now discontinued.

I have a couple of pairs of loafers. I normally wear UK size 10 shoes but will always size down for loafers ie UK size 9.5. This gives me more of a snug fit.
When it comes to loafers for me personally, I love the more formal penny with an apron toe in leather. When it comes to a driving moc, then I'm going suede all day. 😎
For a hot weather summer shoe you probably don't want a Goodyear welt. Blake stitching is used for a good reason.
Please elaborate sir. Blake stitching is cheaper and less effective. I’m curious as to how it’s better in hot weather.
@@TheChapsGuide The Blake sole is thinner and more flexible, which makes it cooler in the heat and more comfortable with thin summer socks.

The advice I have always heard is that if you only have one set of loafers, you should stick to a penny loafer.
The loafer is great because it can be easily slipped off and on during a long work day. Although maybe it originated with the Great Gatsby preppie crowd, most would be surprised to know they are affecting a preppie look by wearing them!
If you are in the USA - the Allen Edmonds Randolph loafer is pretty good. They also make a hybrid sneaker version.
I have frequently considered adding a pair of Penny Loafers to my shoe collection; however, I have always talked myself out of purchasing. Maybe 2024 will be the year I actually buy a pair.
Crockett and Jones have many different loafers.The C&J one with a horsebit decoration is just one of their many different slip-on shoes.Edward Green are another English company that make excellent loafers.

I will disagree with you on the boat shoe or as I call it the New England summer moccasin. They come in many fashions and styles like with a lower vamp and one pair of eyelets (canoe Moc), a higher vamp with 2 eyelets. These are commonly known as “boat shoes” and also with 3-4 pairs of eyelets as a blucher. These are now a American wardrobe staple but like many other items didn’t get popular until Paul Sperry sold his design to the US Navy in 1939 and many Sailors and Marines continue to want to wear them after the war. They are a comfortable and hardwearing casual shoe that is easy to slip on and off and ideal for warmer months. I recommend some of the higher end hand sewn models from EasyMoc, Quoddy, and Rancourt. Shy away from Oak Street.

I like plain tassel loafers, not into kilties for some reason. I have a hard time wearing them though, either too loose and my heel slides up and down or too tight. Very hard to find a good fit.
Hi Ash, My problem is fit! I wear mostly Crockett and jones in shoes and boots but depending on the last I can be an 8-8.5 or even a 9 ! When buying online, especially EBay how would I determine the size I need? It’s a conundrum!! Maybe I go in and try the brand on in a shop.

I get what your saying but I have a few pair of loake loafers and they are very uncomfortable . My Gucci are timeless quality and very comfortable and worth the money in my opinion only
Hi Ash! Thinking of your brush with former PM and (now) Lord Cameron and his choice of loafers despite his otherwise full suit of a political armour, what is your take on sprezzatura? I had an ex who, commenting once on my outfit (bit of a John Wick look decades earlier), said I looked like I was trying to hard. One can't really conclude much from a single opinion but she was my gf at the time so I didn't just dismiss it outright. Now I try to work in an eccentricity or two just to avoid looking too much like a dandy. Which makes me think of a second question, where do you draw the line between being a chap vs dandy? Or is that a question that if you have to ask you ARE a dandy?

Slight pushback on the "Boat shoes are only for boats" principle. A bit like saying you can only wear polo shirts if you're playing a few chukkas on the back of a pony. Would limit the use to an impossibly slim percentage of the population.
I get the idea of having dedicated, non-marking, sipe-soled shoes that are reserved for the slightly damp decks of medium-sized, gently pitching pleasure craft in fair weather. And nowhere else. But you don't need boat shoes for the Channel ferry. You don't need them on a cruise ship. You won't be allowed to wear them on someone else's superyacht. They would look ridiculous on a serving Naval vessel. Even more so on a fishing boat or indeed any working watercraft. They would be useless and dangerous in a kayak. Competitive dinghy sailors have since moved on to neoprene boots.
Many modern "boat shoes" (also known as deck shoes or top-siders) are frequently sold with soles that are made of a far more durable material, making them suitable for paved or unpaved dry land surfaces. The style, usually leather or canvas, with a moccasin cut, also have the advantage of being one of very few mens shoes that can be worn without socks, and that look particularly good with shorts. Much, much better than most sandals and trainers.
Loafers are an appealing style of footwear that pairs very well with smart-casual mens fashion. But if you are wearing shorts, and want to go sock-less in warm weather, then it's hard to improve on the "boat shoe" - no matter how far from the actual water you might be.
I think boat shoes are highly functional and highly unattractive sir, hence my comments. Boat shoes are best left to boats.
I have owned Gucci & Carmina loafers for a few years now, the quality is excellent with both however Carmina definitely trumps Gucci in terms of value for money. My last pair of Carmina loafers were £299 & Gucci £785 !!
