I think the writers did a good job about this redemption arc. It's not about asking or earning forgiveness from others, Wanderer realized the consequences of his own sins and mistakes, and was willing to pay for them if necessary. He understood that "erasing" himself didn't bring him any closure that he wanted.
I like to think that he went through his own cycle of Samsara. Similar how Nahida accepted Rukkhadevata as her previous self. Loved those parallels, showing how similar those two are.

While I like wanderer a lot I can not agree with that comparison, Eis actions lead to death but it was still done with a misguided sense of doing whats best for her nation and people, protecting them from tragedy and time.
Scaras murders had no such intentions behind them, there was no misguided sense of a greater good or helping others, just bis resentment for humans and gods.

I mean it’s just that Ei’s actions came up as a way of protecting her people. Obviously we all agree that they didn’t end well, but the intention was to save her people to not advance to a degree that Celestia turns against her country. And she did not lock herself up coz of her sister’s death and that she was done with ruling and responsibilities; she was just afraid that she might lose her ideals of eternity and her will to protect Inazuma, as time progresses . So she hard coded her will of then, into a machine and let it rule. Bad decision, but intention was at the right place.
I def agree with Lorie on Lores XD, but here I’ve to disagree. Scara was meant to be a villain character, but we later got to know why was he so. He, or his situations and actions were nothing similar to Ei’s. She was wrong on blindly trusting her 500 years old ideals to work well for her people now. Sacra’s problems were all his own. He killed people in good conscience. Bash Ei all you want, but don’t defend Scara saying that one shouldn’t bash him coz he’s like Ei. There are 0 similarities.

Deep inside it must've been his biggest fear. Even if it means to endure torture from the Fatui, he was still willing to go through this, just to be of a worth to someone. I actually love how they did this quest. Sure, I have some mixed feelings about some voice lines about ''The Balladeer'' being gone, but I love that he went back to his old self. He's not completely innocent, that was clearly said multiple times through the quest, but he is not the biggest evil either.
He didn't just do complete 90 turn and become a good guy and he didn't hide behind anything either. He directly said that he will face whatever consequences there are for his past actions, and if there is someone out there who feels like taking revenge, bring it on. He went even beyond and told us that people who don't remember him anymore should know the truth. He could just move on without anyone knowing, but no, he wanted those people to know he was to blame for that.
I totally love that. Side note, I adore his comebacks, especially talking to Paimon, just yes, that's my boy. I love how they finally showed us his past (as heartbreaking as it was). And I keep thinking about the innocent Scaramouche that he could've been if things were different, but in the same time, I'll keep OUR 'Scaramouche' any day.

I really have to agree with you on how so many people just ignore the fact that Ei was in fact a villain who killed people. Scaramouche also killed people, but both get a redemption arc, and yet some people only want to accept Ei's arc. It is a serious double-standard and I don't like it. That being said, the whole debate over how much can a person really "redeem" themselves is an interesting philosophical debate. Can the worst people become good? Can someone ever make up for things like murder? And like you said in the example with Kazuha killing guards who were chasing him, where does that leave situations in which the person had no choice but to do something bad, like self defense? The seeds for Scaramouche becoming evil were planted when Ei abandoned him, but he could still become a good person. It was Dottore manipulating him and killing the people he loved that made Scaramouche become evil in the first place, and like that person said, if an owner trains their dog to kill, is it the dogs fault when they kill someone, or the owners?
Scaramouche is a deep character, just like many characters in Genshin, including Ei, so it bothers me that so many people refuse to see that and try to simplify them into one archetype.

    • @yaemiko8571
      @yaemiko8571 Год назад +18

Ei still get quite a lot of hate for it to this day tbh but not as much as before, most people just like characters that have been their ally from the beginning, like kazuha which in his trailer yeah he did kill guards just performing their duties since it was during the vision hunt or kokomi for endangering her own people in leading a rebellion whilst knowing that they are at a disadvantage against the shogun's army and getting a lot of people from watatsumi killed by taking up arms, you are right it is double standard and it's bad, they don't even hate tartaglia as much as they hated Ei, wherein tartaglia purely had evil intentions by endagering the people of liyue unlike Ei who thought she was on the right path. I personally prefer characters that have growth like Ei, Wanderer, Eula and Ningguang not just the goody two shoes characters from the start which makes their story kinda flat and unrealistic. characters that have done bad things but are trying to better themselves makes them more "human" in a sense.

The mere fact that Ei didn't even mention a single thing about kabukimono on her story quests (she got two and she chose to just randomly go on a date with the MC and the 2nd quest just got me more confused at all like what happened to the sap? Where did it came from? Why did it just suddenly became a battle with the shogun when her original goal was to fix that corrosion stuffs that suddenly appeared under the shrine, after the battle now whut? She opened Inazuma to all but what happened to those memories on the sakura trees?) prove that if not nothing, she has only the littlest feeling for Scaramouche. I get why Scaramouche hates her actually, it is indeed a salt poured on the injury to say that she just doesn't want to intervene with his fate. That phrase is different from I want him to be free and can be easily misunderstood. In the end she's still the one that got away and abandoned her creation.

    • @leegunring
      @leegunring Год назад

After all, the Raiden shogun is the archonl, and her self-renewal can improve the entire country. That's not the case with Scara. His atonement may have the positive meaning of self-redemption, but it is also suspected of self-satisfaction.
The big question about "whether the truth should be told to the party, regardless of whether the other party can accept it" is a topic that is often discussed in recent plots, and the same is true of the case investigated by Heizo. The most thoughtful person who seems to have handled it so far is Ayato, who revealed it after a series of observations that determined that Kazuha was capable of facing the truth.

    • @Downxos

That’s why i honestly like the way hoyoverse wrote his quest and his character. We can see how scara doesn’t really care if people thinks he can be redeemed or not, and welcomes the chance for them to come settle the score so he can take responsibility for his actions. This leaves the question open to the opinions of the viewers. If you believe he has been redeemed or deserves to be, then great. And if not, then he’ll accept the hatred and move on until someone manages to kill him or something

  • @sjrkn2590
    @sjrkn2590 Год назад +29

You nailed it with the context clues being sprinkled throughout the game for SEVERAL PATCHES BACK and yet people still believe that the “redemption” arc came out of nowhere. Truthfully it doesn’t even feel like a redemption arc; Scara maintained his memories and his personality. It felt more like an explanation, showing a background and a reason to how he became to be. The writers were VERY careful with writing this quest and even had Nahida LITERALLY narrate and explain things to the players and yet a lot of people still approach it with such a close mind.
I think they did a really good job with wrapping up his story. Getting an anemo vision was very fitting for him too. I don’t understand the clamor for him to retain his old look and Electro powers while being playable and not having some sort of “redemption”.

I don't usually comment, but I just wanted to say how much I think people like you are important for the fandom. You have such a good perspectve on the characters. So many other content creators have such shallow views of characters like Scara, and I think this contributes to a lot of the opinions the fandom has on morally gray characters.
Like, an unbelievable number of streamers blame Scara for getting angry when the kid in his past died??? Like what? They can't seem to get that people might experience grief and more complex emotions differently than they might. So their viewers also get these weird, shallow interpretations of what is going on.
There is so much misinformation, misinterpretation, and bias. It is so refreshing to see a more nuanced take. You don't need to agree with everything a character does or feels, or even like them, but I think it's important to try to understand them at least.

Honestly all of the mixed reactions to this quest have got me kinda confused. I feel like people aren't even aware of the weird double standards they have when it comes to characters like Scaramouche and lets say the Raiden Shogun as a prime example. Ei trapped her citizens inside of Inazuma and started the vision hunt decree, a decree where she literally used her power as shogun to hunt down her subjects and steal their visions/ambitions, leaving them as depressed husks of their former selves. She could even go as far as to executing subjects who tried to fight against the decree more brazenly, as seen when Tomo (rest in peace king) lost his duel. Not to mention her impromptu abandonment of Scaramouche was the catalyst for all of his issues to come. Despite all of this, whenever people bring up issues they may have with her, it's consistently met with an understanding that her actions came from a place of hurt.
Meanwhile, when Scaramouche checks all of the same boxes, with the only differences being that he's emotionally a bit more stubborn (due to his trauma) and has been a known antagonist for a longer amount of of time, I just can't help but question why people are still so mad at him. As someone who completely dropped Genshin for a couple of months after pulling for Raiden Shogun only to have her first story quest be such a humongous let down in actually getting to the meat of her issues as a character, I'm extremely pleased with the way they handled Scaramouche's story this time around. I think it's really amazing how they managed to tie in the themes of how although we might all do things we aren't proud of or have things that we wish we could take back, our imperfections are what make us human.
This meaning a lot for the Wanderer, as even though he's a being who has been shunned and othered by gods and humans alike, he still has those core aspects that make him what he coveted to be, a living individual. Not to mention he accepted his past sins and understood astutely that even though his actions came from a place of misguided hurt, that doesn't mean that they deserve to be brushed under the rug or just left out in the air to dry. He's taking the time to not only heal but take accountability for who he used to be. Frankly, compared to what some other morally grey characters have done to "atone" for their actions, (cough cough Childe tried to drown a city and his story quest just went "aha sorry just gotta get that payroll for my fam back home y'know??") his story really was the most clear and concise by far.
Woop anyways good quest Wanderer is cool, I had to hold back from naming him Shaboopie or something but yeah pretty interesting quest!

    • @Riku-Leela
      @Riku-Leela Год назад +5

The reason why people are so mad at Wanderer instead of Raiden is because I feel like most of the playerbase just dont understand how complex characters work and that they need the character's redemption spoon-fed to them rather than working it out for themselves.
Raiden's redemption arc was wrapped up with the players being told that she redeemed herself because she understands the issues that she caused and is changing. Some people prefer that I guess.
Instead Scara's was left more open for interpretation, like "do you forgive him or not" because the characters just treated him neutrally after all is done, like the traveller for example they don't forgive him for the atrocities he's committed, but they respect that he's turned a new leaf and can sympathise to a certain extent which is a great way of doing it in my opinion.
Honestly give this fanbase an incredibly written complex "Villian" character like Otto for Honkai and they'd just complain

Straight up, Ei abandoned Scaramouche. Granted these are cartoon characters, but she did exactly that. Come on people, she is a goddess, she should have figured if she gave him life and the freedom to wander, her creation was going to come back and bite her in the butt was entirely possible. Then on top of all of it, Docttore who is a heinous, unforgivable character, abandoned Scaramouche again. Nothing is black and white. Everything has shades of gray! The fact that the writing of the script reflects this, gives so much more intrigue and drama to all the characters!

    Regarding your opinion about raiden.
I absolutely agree about the responsibility take.
Ei never intended for Scara to be “evil” or “morally grey”
    She just gave him freedom
As someone that relates a lot to the Raiden story (isolation) I also relate to Scara in the “absolute freedom is not good”
Raiden gave him freedom and released him into the world
That’s exactly what my parents did when I was a child they never cared too much about “education” so I had to figure out a lot of thing myself (mostly regarding good and bad deeds)
Doing this is an absolute mistake by the parent.. providing 0 input and/or educational knowledge is insanely dangerous to a child
What Ei did is something that unfortunately a lot of people do irl and is ignoring a child and giving them absolute freedom
I could’ve become a really bad person considering my “”education”” but thankfully I didn’t
    (I recognise I’m the minority)
The correct decision was not only to keep him alive and not destroy him but also to keep him at tenshukaku and teach him about the world and give him proper love.

Funny thing is, Ei doesn't understand much about the mortal world also But she realized her path, wasn't his path. Ei was a shadow, a warrior of the battlefield, even when the leadership of the nation fell onto her after her sister death, she created new shield to hide behind again. Scara staying behind would only be possible if he was to follow her path. The current Ei, has now just become the light and her puppet Shogun the Shadow. Now she has taken more interest in learning about the mortal life and its play on the ideals of eternity. I also have a theory that all this "needed" to happen. Ei needed the plane of euthymia to create the Sacred Sakura to actually "Change" the past and her mind existing there might give her some protection against changes in Irminsul.

I was so happy that I got to catch this stream!(I was still too shy to chat lol) Congrats on C6 R5!!!
I wanted to say that I am so sorry that people were actually giving you flak for liking Wanderer(which is wild if they like Ei, Zhongli, Tartaglia, etc.)
I love both Ei and Wanderer and part of the reason is because they are morally flawed individuals who are trying to do better(don't know if I phrased that correctly), people who try to absolve Ei from her wrongdoings are only do a disservice to her character anyway because by doing so, it takes away from the growth she has had.
If people read they would have clearly seen that Wanderer was going to have a redemption arc, shoot even if they haven't, I feel like playing through Sumeru's Archon Quest and watching his scenes should have told them that there was something more than just being "evil" so I don't understand why people say it just came out of nowhere. The attempt to erase himself from irminsul came from a place of wanting the people he cared about not to suffer, I personally didn't see it as a cop out especially since he decided to take those memories back and told the traveller to tell the descendants that he was the one behind it, he could've had a clean slate but he decided to accept responsibility. I also agree with your opinion regarding Ei and what she should have done, while it's great she didn't want to destroy him, abandoning him was not the right thing to do either because that just left him really vulnerable and was the cause for all the mess up things that happened to him
I have seen so much mixed reception for this Archon quest but I personally loved it(probably a little biased hehe) and I think Wanderer has had the best redemption arc in the game so far, I can't wait to see more of him in the future, hopefully a Kazuha and Wanderer interaction is in the works, sorry this is so long😅

Yea, I was, and still am, a "wanter of good redemption arcs". And Scara got a really good one! XD
Thing is, I've seen a lot of people dividing themselves into Ei vs Scara, which is where I kinda disagree. Neither are blameless, but neither are absolute evil either. For Raiden's case, yes she did some bad stuff, the Vision Hunt Decree and Sakoku shouldn't have been a thing, _but_ , it's not fully her fault. When she says "I know exactly what's going on outside", it was the same as Scara: _she thought she knew exactly what's going on outside_. The Commission she set up to be her eyes, lied to her; you could say her fault was not double checking it. So yes, while she isn't all innocent, she wasn't being a tyrant out of pure evil, she was led to believe the people were masochist and liking it (if that makes sense) and in her insecurity to be a good ruler, led to believe she was doing a good job, she continued on that path till we gave her a reality check. I do however feel she did suffer from bad writing in the sense the story was good, the storytelling wasn't as much; unlike Scara's case.
Coming to Scara, I kinda dislike characters who act all high and mighty (nothing against Scara himself, but characterizations like this in general), so what I liked was they didn't make him a goody-two-shoes. He realized the entire thing he based his anger and hatred on, was just a big LIE. He still stays the same brat we know, but now, he knows _who to fuck up_ . He doesn't try to make amends since it's pointless, he's in it now to prevent whatever happened to him again. Which I respect. This was where Signora went wrong: Rostam's death was partly Venti's fault, but she evolved beyond a powerful being of flame to just wanting to watch the world burn, without realizing that she was probably the reason behind other 'Rostam's and 'Rosalyne's.
Additionally, the whole Ei abandoning Scara thing is so blown out of proportion imo. Both are in the right. -ish. Scara is justified since his literal first memory is waking up in a domain without any recollection of what happened to his mother, and believing he was abandoned after Ei saw he was unfit for what he was created: housing a Gnosis. There's even a sneaky part of the story that seems to suggest that Scara went to get help from the Shogunate using his feather during the Tatarasuna incident, but a "shrine maiden" kinda intercepted him, and promised him help, which never arrived. So he's justified to feel betrayed. Ei on the other hand, did what she thought was best. Scara couldn't bear the Gnosis, and she was too emotionally attached to him to not recycle him, so she decided to set him free. In my opinion, she didn't see Scara as a son, but imo like the best of your life's work that you can't bring yourself to erase. Additionally, Ei has been depicted as naive (which is something I love in potrayals of deities in general: that beyond they're powers they're also pretty human, the only difference being instead of dealing with mortality issues, they deal with immortality issues), her nation was in shambles, her sister and all her friends were dead, and she was catapulted to lead an entire nation without counsel when she hated the spotlight, so I understand where she comes from. She also didn't fully abandon Scara, as otherwise she wouldn't have given him the feather: she left him to lead his own life as he chose, and know that if he ever needed, the Electro Archon's aid is at his disposal. So yea.
_And this might get me persecuted, but I actually feel story _*_content_*_ wise Liyue is the weakest. Like this dude tries to kill you, then tries to blow up the city, then you see the god of said city was actually manipulating him to do that, the you babysit his brother_
TLDR: Scaramouche and Ei aren't white, aren't black. They're gray, and very well written characters (except for Ei's case, maybe not as well executed). There's no need to do who's right who's wrong, coz it's neither: they did what they felt was right and that's all that counts.

The Voice at the end can't be the Hydro Archon. In case you forgot, changing Irminsul's information is retroactive, so she wouldn't remember. Descenders are an exception to this, obviously, and the only options that make sense are either the Sustainer or Istaroth. Then again, I wouldn't put it past Hoyo to ignore that lore just to tease the next nation. That being said, Focalors ideal is Justice, not Fate. Who knows?

Lorie!!!! This is honestly the first video of yours that I had to watch from start to finish and I have to say, it was so worth it! To be honest, I thought you were just one of those bandwagonners who liked Scaramouche. Nope, you proved me SO WRONG. You did what only a few TRUE fans could: you understood his character. He was more than a cool-looking designed character, with an interesting named attached to a song. More than that, you saw a broken puppet who just longed to be human and find purpose for himself.
I love how you went on a tangent because you felt the need to really justify how well-written his character is, and how, yes, he committed crimes and it doesn't justify anything of his character, however, it doesn't mean he can't choose to face the music himself and deal with all its consequences. He's truly a very fleshed out character. I'm so excited to have more of him in the future updates. Also, the fact that you brought up the double standards about morally gray characters if they were a man or woman was really strong.
The scene where he got his vision still continues to give me chills and near tears (I cried my first few times okay). He so deserves something for himself and not one that was forced upon him (the theory that he should've gotten an electro vision comes to mind and it actually came upon a theory post i saw on twitter).

I don't really think Paimon should trust Scaramouche, I think Paimon should have a little trust in the god of wisdom, Nahida, and not baby her as if she isn't a full-fledged archon well aware of the pros and cons of her decisions, it's not her place to interfere. Hell Nahida likely knows more about Scaramouche than Paimon does, they have had time to talk.

The voice at the end so far has a majority of people thinking its either a unknown higher entity in teyvat who doesnt experience changes by the irminsul to the living memory. and if you go from that people suspect that a higher power is in question and that one is one of the shades of the primodial one. Istaroth the god of time we knew she already has been involved 2 times in some events so far. like helping enkanomiya and makoto seperately. And it makes sense she seems favourable to humans and perhaps as we can hear desire to help the world break free of something its currently in. and as the god of time(a higher form of power then what archons have and possibly others) she experiences every moment in the world. she would be keenly aware of history and the flow of time thus the whole talk about how history doesnt change easily if at all. in short. Things have happend, is happening, will happen. As the vase allegory makes out you cant change the world only the perception of what happend.
Also i personally also found it very interesting scara got a anemo vision. something tells me if its Istaroth keeping an eye on us. thats no mistake because one of her titles were also the Thousand winds which is interesting because at one point her and barbatos were two of monstadts worshipped gods. and anemo has been tied to time related powers. I personally hope its her or atleast some of the higher beings we knew has existed or does exist.

I give great importance to names, so I spent over two hours on deciding one for Wanderer. Before I did this quest I had been spoiled on the renaming thing, so I was thinking of naming him something that connected him with his roots, but after it, I thought it wouldn't be right. Then, I thought of naming him shadow in persian, since he did basically say he would be Nahida's shadow here, but it didn't feel right either.
I ended up giving him his own name, "Kazem." A persian name that means "one who controls his anger."
I think MHY did a nice job with both his and Raiden's redemptions...and they both paid for their sins with a 500 year penance, which I think made for a nice parallel.
I still hold hope that he and Raiden will meet again. After all, he still has her feather. It was sad to see that Raiden no longer has her voiceline of him. Interestingly enough, the Katsuragikiri blade remains with its name unchanged.
As for him believing that relationships are borrowing and taking, well, that just means there's more space for future character development. I hope we see him again soon ❤

The difference between Ei and Scara is that Scara actually repented and embraced all the sins and is ready to be punished and wants to be better, but Ei only accepted that eternity is not possible so she called it off yet the traveler and Paimon had a better attitude with her compared to Scara and it maddens me. Hypocrites.

Eis actions came from a misguided sense of the greater good and came with the benefit of having Miko to help explaim everything and to jelp them symoathize and humanize her and the traveler was the thorn in her plans not the other way round.
Scara on the other hand has beem dogging the traveler since 1.1 and has been a thorn in their side a much longer time, he has also caused the traveler a lot of problems and has drawn their personal ire at multiple points like mocking the death of one of their friends.
It only makes sense for the traveler and Paimon to have more of a resentment for him at the start.

Naming Scara feels like naming a party member in a jrpg... I think the game is setting him up to be our travel partner. I also have a feeling Collei as well will be. We might have a crew when we go to future nations

52:54 I'M ON THE SAME WAVELENGTH LEGIT sorry for all caps I'm just happy to see someone else has this view but like you said I see so many excuses like yeah eis past was sad yes her intention wasn't as cruel but it doesn't mean it suddenly didn't happen or had any consequence and it bugs me so much

So basically that voice at the end says that Irminsul only records the memories of the world and alters only those memories, it does not change occurences of things that have happened in the past. Whatever happened has happened but Irminsul can make everyone forget about them, but it doesn't change the fact that it has still happened in Teyvat.
If that's the case, we should think back on the game and find the lore where things are unclear. One thing I found is that Sal Vindagnyr (the old Dragonspine) was destroyed even though nothing so far mentions of anything they did to offend Celestia. Which means, Irminsul may have erased the evidence of why Sal Vindagnyr was destroyed.

if dottore ever becomes a playable character, it's probably a segment/clone gone rogue. i honestly can't see the actual dottore going to our side unless the traveler finds a crazy truth that makes them team up with the fatui despite the shit they've done.
