Many Americans are completely unaware that Germany also has access to the sea. Not only to the Baltic Sea, but also to the North Sea. Very many vacation islands can be found in the North Sea, the most famous is Sylt. The only remaining high sea island of Germany is Heligoland in the North Sea.

One brand of card terminals was using an expired certificate. These certificates are issued by a certificate authority with a limited expiration date of a few years. Normally the vendor of these card readers would have to apply for a new certificate a few days or weeks before it expires and then update all of its terminals via software update. In this case it didn’t happen and the transactions from these terminals were no longer accepted by the clearing companies because no secure communication could be established.

Why would they let the certificates expire?

    • @rolfgarske8174

@@Hallands. The certificate authorities need to do this to prevent fraud. The want to check if the user of the certificate still has a valid business case. Also because new certificates can use advanced encryption to make them harder to be hacked. It‘s the obligation of the certificate user to apply for a new certificate at the appropriate time. They should mark the date for application in their calendar. If the use a paper calendar that might be a problem because the calendar for the year of expiration is not yet available.

You picked a good time to go to Rügen. When the weather is nice during summer holidays Rügen and neighboring island Usedom can get very crowded. It's near enough to Berlin and other northern German cities that people just hopp into their cars and spent a few days or a week. The last time I was there, there was a traffic jam in the evening when people drove back to their hotels and camping sites from the beaches. I always find it so fascinating how different yet close the Baltic Sea and North Sea are. Baltic Sea is mostly calm (not always) and has hardly any tide difference, whereas the North Sea can get very windy and the tide difference is extreme, yet you could visit them on the same day. I kayaked in both of them (in a group with experienced kayakers who live at the coast). The experience was so different.

When you lack the background knowledge a place does not tell you much except for the immediate impression. Like hot/cold, many houses/trees etc. But the significance and perhaps clues to other data escape the mind. And when you read about history later, and a place where you have been is mentioned, you wish you had that knowledge to check the place out in more detail.

The original pier of Sellin was damaged by high floods in a storm that came together with extreme cold weather, resulting in a frozen Baltic. The rising waters caused the ice to rip the wooden pillars of the pier out of the seabed. The remaining posts or pillars had to be left in their places when that reconstruction of the pier was underway in the early 1990s. The odd shape of the pier is caused by that; the new pillars could not be driven into the seabed where it was intended because of the remaining bits and pieces underwater. The pillars that support the pier are from steel now. When the first stage of that work was finished one of the honorary guests at the opening was a nearly 100 year old fotographer from Sellin who had taken tons of pictures about beach life in Sellin and especially of people on that pier in the years before WW II and had been able to keep the negatives in his archive. He was deeply moved by seeing that place of his young years being reconstructed. At first there was just the platform with some tents on it for catering, but then the original pier restaurant was widely rebuilt. The diving bell at the end was added in recent years.

You have to be careful on the beach. During World War II, nearby Peenemünde was incendiary bombed. Later, the incendiary bombs were sunk in the sea. The white phosphorus used is still washed up on the beach today.
When wet, it can hardly be distinguished from amber, which is also often found there.
White phosphorus self-ignites in air at 34 degrees Celsius and causes severe burn injuries.

On Rügen there also is a castle. And the white city Putbus. Kind of a capital of Rügen is the city Bergen. And from Rügen or also from the city Stralsund you should take the ferry to go to the small island Hiddensee. It's possible for a daytripp also. That is an island without cars allowed on. Lot of adventures are possible in all of that area. Oh, and on Rügen you would find a train for Willa. Der rasende Roland. And the old natural language in that area is Low German. Some of the people still are able to speak this language. On Rügen they also have little museums you could find, about the history of the area. There are also fisherman villages.

That rocks with holes through them are flint. Flint is a material that has its origin in chalk and during the process of crystallization those flint bulbs took the shape that the then harder chalk around them forced upon them. Those holes are therefore no effect of erosion or any other kind of external force when those rocks were shaped in the first place. Those rocks simply grew that way. The sea later washed the chalk away and when there was some "bubble" of chalk in the flint those holes were the result. There is some old Slavic superstition about those rocks, saying that chicken lay more eggs or get protected against foxes or whatsoever when you hang a flint with a hole over the door of your poultry shed. That myth got reflected in some recent novel that was translated into German and the term "Hühnergötter" ("chicken gods") was created. Because all kinds of esotericism find a lot of followers in our time that myth about flints with holes on threads as a talisman has become widespread.

Next to rocks you might find amber on the beach, especially after a storm. And yes there was an outage of the terminals for card payment in Germany.

Really cute video with little Willa commentary ☺️ it’s a pity that the weather wasn’t better.
I like to look for firestones with holes (for good luck) on the Baltic beaches or for amber which is much harder to find.
If you like white stone coasts you have to go to Denmark to Møn Island. They are beautiful and several km long.
I have never experienced a long lasting failure of the card machines like this in my life time! It was really annoying. I usually don’t carry a lot of cash with me. Certainly not enough to pay a tank full of gas these days.

Did you know that Marburg has an elevator taking you from the Unterstadt (lower part of the town) to the Oberstadt (upper part of the town)? There used to be a bookshop that had its own lifts to take you from the Unterstadt to the Oberstadt within the shop.

Just be careful walking underneath the cliffs, or too close to the edge - as you've seen, landslides do happen, and there has been the occasional beach walker buried in chalk rubble. Alas, the cliffs have become more unstable over the past decades.

I liked very much when beeing there. And also try some of the "Sanddorn" products. It´s typical for the region. Not everyone likes them (a bit bitter), but I do. Enjoy your time there!!

"Cash in der Täsch" still rules sometimes :) No, that card thing doesn't happen regularly. For me it was the first time in over 20 years that i heard of something that wide spread. According to news it was one specific card terminal in shops that didn't work anymore so as a bakup you could always draw cash from the ATMs since they were not affected. Not the best if you are in the shop and want to check out unprepared but not an unsurmountable obstacle.

The issue with the terminals is a technical issue, as verifon stated. It mostly hit north-east Germany and specific stores and chaines. Current suspicion is a bodged update a few month ago.
But payment providers are already replacing those terminals.

I have learned to never ever depend on cards only when I flew to the London UK for a weekend with 2 credit cards - so I got 100 pounds from a random ATM at the airport. Two hours later I got a call from the card company that the ATM war scammed (I did not see anything, but they said it does not matter if it was put there afterwards, and they said they are only informing me that my card has already been blocked and they even could not undo this even if they or I wished - I needed a new card, which they said could be in UK the monday after the quickest. Ok, I thought: well, I have another one, so no need for that. Then I'd tried to pay with it, learning that the chip on it was unreadable - I had not used it for some month at it was only my "emergency" cards with some usage fees... so luckily I was there with friends. I never go anywhere again without cash in my pocket.

My husband was severely disappointed when he first saw the Oregon coast/actual Pacific ocean. It was so violent and loud, compared to the gentle lapping of the North and Ost seas. We got sand blasted at Washington's popular beach (Ocean Shores) and now we know why people don't go there in Winter. Although I'm from WA, I think Oregon wins in the sheer number of amazing beaches, one after the other, ripping at the shore line, trying and succeeding, to claim the land.

No the card thing doesn't happen a lot, for me it's was the first time I experienced that. I didn't do any research as to why it didn't worked (here in Berlin too) but it seemed like it didn't affected every store. I asked the rewe employee before going to pay if the card paying option is available at their cash out and he said it worked the whole time and they somehow weren't affected by the country wide card error. Idk why it work there but not at the other stores I went but yeah who knows what the problem really was idk

It's been more than 55 years since my family went on vacation on Ruegen - every year. below the chalk cliffs we found our stony beach. the way there led through a forest and a steep staircase. very mysterious for us children. we found ambers and thunderbolts. At that time the island belonged to the communist side of Germany - East Germany. not every citizen had the opportunity to vacation there. room allocation was limited and tent sites were fully booked in advance.
