Outstanding presentation and should be taken seriously by every VFW, Legion and Amvets member and post. A smoke filled bar with casino machines is going to kill posts.

My post in Southwick, MA is growing because we are focusing on the community and OIF/OEF/OND veterans. In addition all of our officers are in their 30's/early 40's. It can be done, as long as the members are willing to change.

Thank you, as a younger member I am trying to increase those in my generation to join.

Any chance I can download these slides. My post needs to hear this info. I'm 30, and the youngest member by 30 years.

Well, to tell you the truth if you want young combat vets to join, you will need to start playing young hip music, hire young hip bands, have a young hip dance floor, invite young hip women for the single guys to ask for a dance from and exchange numbers with, and serve young hip food and drinks. For the young men and women who are married, you need to make it fun for wives or husbands to join the auxiliary. I realize quilting and knitting are great fun for some older groups, but I think young married women would rather go do younger hip things. Maybe put gym equipment in, or if there is space or a yoga area. Perhaps a place for kids to play and enjoy so Moms can get a workout in. Hire Zumba instructors. Have a hip coffee bar with lunch specials, breakfast with avocado toast, etc. Offer healthier meals for dinner (modern salads, lean meats, wine tastings, etc.). There is so much that can be done with these VFWs to make them fun for younger generations. But in order to do that they really need to start understanding what it is that younger people are attracted to. You can probably even start bowling leagues at the VFW and play them at the local bowling alley. Above all, combat vets want to feel important and that their service is recognized, that it wasn't all for nothing. It's nice to be greeted and treated with respect from older peers.

I’m a 32 year old army veteran. If my local VFW or American Legion was like this I would join. Problem is, it’s not. It’s the stereo typical dark bar with old white men smoking and drinking.
