Both Penelope and Javier were dating their long term 1st serious relationships when they first met on the set of Jamon Jamon. Penelope Cruz was dating a very famous musician, Nacho Cano, who was in a mega famous Spanish New Wave band Mecano (they sold millions of LPs in the Spanish speaking world), and being associated with him opened A LOT of doors for her. They were together around 6-7 years or so. Whilst Bardem was also in a serious relationship with his girlfriend Cristina Payés. They lasted many years together, like 14 years or so. That's not to say he didn't have affairs, as it is rumoured he did, especially on film sets. I have to say, Penelope has never dated a guy who isn't famous. Ever. It's like she got far by 'who she dated', if you know what I mean.
She is an amazing actress. Saying she got far only because she happened to have dates famous people is dismissing her talent. She's beautiful and sought after, she works in the entertainment industry so of course the people she meets and gets with are from her universe a.k.a famous people

You better do a bit more research before commenting. She dated a nobody photographer and a sports person after Nacho Cano
