Came here from Charles Cornell. I really like how clearly you were able to elucidate exactly how the music works and makes the intended listener feel without using many confusing music theory terms.
Same here - I do not have the training to follow along with Charles' video. I'm sure it's very insightful - for musicians. But I couldn't make hands and feet of it, and started to feel like it was taking away some of my major enjoyment of the soundtrack, which I absolutely adore.
DAAAMMM something I just noticed as you were pointing it out: "Toothless song never concluded, always faded off" youre right, BUT, when does it finaly gets a conclusion? THATS RIGHT, exactly at the moment when they harmoniously fly together. Toothless found hes missing pieace!, Hiccup!, and there for, his theme also finds its final piece. The theme was brought to completion, because toothless was also now complete (because of the missing tale, he was incomplete), and Hiccup´s theme was complete from the begining because as Stoick said "they just needed more of...this" Hiccup as a character was never incomplete, even though he thought he was lacking something. Thats why Hiccups theme had ending and toothless did not, because it reflected the journeys of the characters. IS BRILLIANCE! thank you for apreciating this movie and making SUCH AN AMAZING VIDEO, more people should really respect more this movie and not just look at it as a kids movie. THIS VIDEO IS GOLD
"These two themes complete each other, just like Hiccup and Toothless." No wonder I always saw this song as having only one theme as a kid. I didn't realize it was both of their themes coming together!
I still say that HTTYD is Powell's opus. This score is a masterpiece and masterclass in cinematic texturalizing. After all these years it's every bit as moving as it was when we first heard it.
Every time I hear test drive I start getting really really emotional especially when the theme changes from toothless’s to hiccup’s in the last part of test drive
The amazing part of Powell’s writing is, if you listen, it doesn’t change. Toothless’ theme is playing in the background as Hiccup’s theme takes over. This shows how they are both working together to fly.
Okay this just completely changed my perspective of the entire score. I recognised all the leitmotifs but never could properly associate them to the relevant characters. WELL DONE.
I agree; I've had my perspective on this score many times, some very recently. The thing is, it's still up for debate and can be argued many ways. I just saw an interview where John Powell mentioned how powerful music can be but also how incredibly vague it is. People can read into it whatever they want.
This is the third time today I've cried while listening to Test Drive (and, subsequently, people discussing the INCREDIBLE soundtrack to this movie), so thanks Phoebe! I love how you pointed out that Toothless' theme actually cadences in Test Drive, where before it would be over taken by something else. Never made that connection before! Great work.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this entire soundtrack and especially Forbidden Friendship and Test Drive, but I guess I never had enough of an ear for leitmotifs to be able to understand exactly why they spoke to me so much. So thank you for breaking it down for me. I suppose the thematic elements of the music did play a huge role in why I like them so much, even though I didn't realize it.
Came here from Sideways! I was always so disappointed at the lack of video essays for HTTYD film franchise, and it's nice to know people just as enthusiastic about it as I am!
9:15 - I agree that Toothless' theme has had yet to be given a "satisfying conclusion", however for what it's worth I perceived his theme at the opening of "Test Drive" as somewhat different to "just fad[ing] off". There's a lot to unpack in the opening seconds of the animation and the music from around 8:26 to 8:39. When learning to fly with an instructor or flying with another pilot, one of the first and most crucial phrases you learn is a variant of "You have control", to which the other pilot must respond "I have control" - or vice-versa. When the scene begins, Hiccup's prosthetic tail rig is set up in a neutral position for straight and level flight. Hiccup then decides whether "position three" or "four" is right to make the sweeping turn. At 8:34 we see Toothless look back and check to see if the position looks right to him, and it's only after he does that that there is a smooth handover both of control and of the theme from Toothless' to Hiccup's. While Hiccup's theme is being played by the tinwhistle, you can see Hiccup repeatedly checking over his shoulder to make sure that the pedal positions are doing what they should be doing (with the tail moving in response), and again, only after that does he start feeling confident enough to take Toothless lower, at which point the French horns take over Hiccup's theme. It really is ridiculously clever.
Fellow pilot here… this is a FANTASTIC observation!! I’ve said for years that ‘test drive’ represents the feeling of flying almost as well as the real thing- sheer freedom, exhilaration, and total situational awareness. Your analysis just adds another level to it for me!
@@turricanedtc3764 hey no worries man! You know your stuff either way! I’ve been lucky enough to be into aviation my whole life and concert band all the way thru college, and it’s always awesome when I see something that can combine the two ✈️
One thing I noticed is that the midway point in "Test Drive" when Hiccup and Toothless start freefalling is mirrored in "Battling the Green Death" when Astrid is freefalling and is similarly concluded like in Test Drive with the merged Hiccup/Toothless theme (albeit with an ending interlude for "Counter Attack").
One piece that I've found hard to pick out and I haven't seen much attention on is Stoic's theme. You first hear it when Hiccup runs into Stoic in the intro scene and most of the other themes are introduced, but his character grows a lot during the series and I'd love to see an analysis of how it's used differently as it happens.
It's not Stoick's theme. It's the "B" section of the Vikings & Dragons theme. There's a piece Powell wrote for the end credits of the first film that outlines both sections of the theme. The reason what you're thinking of doesn't belong to Stoick, is it also appears in the 3rd film in the final battle (the scene is about the viking children working together to free their dragons), and it plays in the big Drago battle in the 2nd film, in a section of the scene not pertaining to Stoick at all. The "A" section of Vikings & Dragons plays for the Viking teenagers riding their dragons. The theme that actually represented Stoick was the courting song (that the character wrote). It plays when he saves Valka twice in the Drago battle, during his funeral (constantly), and once in the end when Valka tells Hiccup how proud Stoick would be.
This [Test Flight] is one of those moments in film scoring that I knew instinctually was somehow important and communicating above what my feeble brain could comprehend. I just could never work out >why< it works so well. I appreciate it greatly when musicians take the time to deconstruct a brilliant musical creation, showing the thought and craft that went into it, and explain it in a way mere musical mortals can understand. Wonderful work; thank you Phoebe-Kate!
I always thought that the percussions and allegro violins belonged to Toothless. When Hiccup tries to control the flight, his theme plays on top of the percussions. Like how he sits atop Toothless. When they finally sync, after Toothless' glide , Hiccup's theme sits on top of the percussions, as well as some allegro violins (when the two characters connect completely).
Understanding the soundtrack behind this movie made it so much more exciting. I mean, i already loved the movie before, but those little, important details made me appreaciate it even more.
Wow. Just wow. I've always been aware of the basic themes, how they come together in test drive and forbidden friendship etc. but this. THIS. video is now very very important to me. NO ONE else has articulated this particular piece of musical genius quite like you have. You were so perfectly eloquent and organised in you're analysis. I've needed this payed out clearly and correctly for so long an you've done it for me. Thank you, seriously, THANK YOU for making this video. From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate the heck out of you. It's been two years since you posted, but I sincerely hope you're doing amazingly.
this was a really neat analysis! i love analyzing the httyd soundtracks but i’ve never thought of their two themes being separate and then completing each other, and it makes so much sense
I also came here from Charles Cornell! Thanks for increasing my understanding of a musical score that I deeply love! When life is a little crazy, hearing "Forbidden Friendship" always makes me smile!
Awesome video! Listening to test drive for just toothless' part was cool the way that his part was in the upper strings but there's a part right near the end when both melodies play the same part as both their become epic :D
I've watched this analysis several times just for the joy of hearing them separate and then coming together. I'm back today after the live action trailer dropped. We do not need a live action version of this film, but I swear... if they mess up Test Drive... there will be no forgiveness. Your video is a wonderful celebration of some legendary music, very grateful for it!
So it was surprisingly hard to find your channel. A video by Sideways referenced your analysis so obviously I wanted to see it. But lord searching “Phoebe-Kate” came up with a slew of other channels and videos. However I am glad I finally found it
RUclips recommended this to me and I definitely enjoyed it. I shed a few tears when the song clips played. Looking forward to more of your score analysis videos! Hopefully you’ll do the sequels and after that, analyse the scores of other dreamworks movies. Particularly fond of Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar :) keep up the good work!
I've been listening to this score for years and I never really realized they had their own separate themes. I just associated them together, I never thought to separate them! It makes so much more sense that way! 😁❤️🐉
This was so well done, love it! I feel like I've always kind of noticed these things subconsciously when listening to the music of this film - which is certainly a big reason why I've always loved it so much and continue to do so - but your explanations put actual words to these feelings and why exactly everything just fits so perfectly together. I'd love to see you do more of these kinds of videos!
Why don’t you have more views!? I love this franchise and how the score so cleverly tells the story. Do the other two movies in the franchise. I love when Toothless is happy and that’s when his theme crescendoed! Thanks for pointing that out. I’d love for you to take me through others as well. I find Black Panther’s score very thematic. It’s not animated but this makes me also think of that.
ive watched this movie at least a dozen times, and ive listened to the music many more times than that, but still powells score finds ways to surprise me! this video is amazing :)
Oh my gods... if you listen close you can hear Toothless' theme playing under Hiccup's theme in the final part of Test Drive... After listening to this song a million times, I've never noticed it.
This is such a perfect breakdown in my opinion as to why the scores of this movie hit so hard, theres so much deeper meaning to it then I even realized and its such a perfect score for an epic adventure on top of it! Thank you for explaining it the way you do :)
Minus your great analyzing of the score, I love how real your voiceover is. You have mistakes and pauses and you go back over and don’t cut anything out. That’s exactly how my voiceover would sound and it made it feel so much more real than a cut to cut to cut which is how most videos are these days.
Omg I never noticed that they both had a theme and how beautifully the music complements them! oooh I love this, Test Drive is the best soundtrack out of all the movies
Really, really interesting! I don't usually pay that much attention to themes, but I can hear them when they're pointed out to me. And I love the way they used them, as you explained them. Love this movie even more now.
this video is amazing and i would love if you analized the "family" theme, a.k.a the melody that plays whenever hiccup is with his family in the sequels; together we map the world and flying with mother in httyd2, and legend has it/cliffside playtime and as long as he's safe in httyd3
this is really cool! I too came here from Sideways. I don't really have an ear for music at all so I love it when people who do explain things to me about it. :)
would love an analysis on how the score changes from the first to second, and how the core themes carry it but the sound matures i think it would be a really cool vid
Great video! Great examination of those themes. Will there be another analysis video for other themes? For example Stoick, Astrid, dragons? (I got to this video, because I watched another video with analysing movie soundtrack generally, based on opening soundtrack - that is how I know about different themes in HTTYD).
Awesome video, definitely a like and sub but I'd like to ask you a question... Could you mix your videos a little bit better so that I don't have to turn up down my volume for the music and up again for your beautiful voice? Thanks
