I cut them into bookmarks and when I visit this thing called the library...lol...I stuff them into random books as a surprise for the next reader! You guys are so funny! ❤
Use them for journal covers! Cut or tear into pieces and use for mosaics or mixed media. Use them for giftwrap. Make shadowboxes out of the cut out elements. Layer a bunch of flowers into a 3D shadowbox of a garden. Decoupage them onto other objects like vases and boxes. Bind them into a book. Create bookmarks. Cover them with plastic and line your drawers in them.
Combine 3 of those ideas. Take the stack of old paintings, scan then into a book and add notes and arrows to the book discussing mistakes and " do's and don'ts" then you have a book to market to young artists. Then make a collage :)
Yes! Artists can be way too quick to discard their older work, and we hear so many professionals say they regret not saving early pieces. We love the book idea- great way to organize it in chronological order, and prevents unnecessary handling of originals. Also, it's a good way to make sure you don't sell or give away a piece without getting a picture first (and don't say you've never done that!)
I tore up old practice paintings, etc and used my paper making screen and frame to make handmade sheets of paper. The sheets of paper turned out beautifully, and it was satisfying, as well as useful!
Thank you for your creative ideas! I like to cut old paintings and glue 4 or 6 squares to card stock for a pretty greeting card. I mix up the orientation and order so it doesn’t look like the original. I also like to cut out hearts from old painting I don’t like, sometimes embellish with a few dots or lines of black or gold and glue them to the fold over flap of the envelope for a little extra love😊❤
Use Works you not really like as a Canvas for new Ideas. Use a Black Fineliner and start to doddle in details. Pattern, Lines, Spirals ,Tangles. Use diffrent colors, Media. Make it a fun abstract Image, dont think about it what it becomes let your mind Flow. Thats how i saved Crappy Stuff , even color blobs. I also did the cut out stuf and aranged the good parts on a new sheet of Paper and keeped the good Images. Srcabooking your Illustrations and make them a wonderful Collage with other Media. I also use ripped to pieces Stuff for new Artworks, i mostly do Acrylic Art but sometimes Watercolor to colorize my Ink Drawings with Pen and Nib Holder. So when i have Paper screed intressthing colors a patterns shine through the Clear Gesso on the Canvas, a whole new Texture an Mixed Media Art results from here.
Never toss out your artwork. Look at what the old masters did that we are finding today that is priceless. You may never sell much of anything while you are alive but you never know who might discover something that you did that makes everything worth a lot. That’s why my daughter is the curator of all my artworks. (Storing them is her problem. Lol. ) actually I have a lot of portfolios that I store them in.
Not only Jenna is highly motivational, John is so thoughtful and encouraging! (And easy on the eyes 😂) thanks so much to both of you and standing ovations to John!
I have a “junk journal” and i use bits and bobs of paintings I’ve done that I am not giving away, or don’t have a place for and just fill in the pages of the journal with it. I do this a lot with those “warm up” pieces that I make before I do a “real” piece. I’m on page 60 of 124 of that journal, and I LOVE it!
I almost didn’t click on the video because the subject didn’t speak to me today. But I’m so glad I did, what a wonderful supportive hubby. I mean his digging skills need some work but what a sweetheart. Also I love the ink!
So fun! Love all these ideas! It has the creative juices flowing... create a scrapbook of your old art, either whole pieces or cut out the pieces you like and create a collage. Use them in your sketchbook and take notes of what you liked and didn't like, key learnings etc.
Just thought I would share with you what I do with some of my artwork. I cut them up into perfect size bookmarks and take them to my local library to give to the kids there. They seem to really love it and inspires them to do their own watercolors. When I give the bookmark I tell them I painted it myself! And with a simple watercolor you can do this too. I thought about buying a bunch of school grade watercolors and a paintbrush to hand out to certain children who had a real interest but haven’t yet💕🎨
Jenna and John--the cutest couple ever!. Great ideas John. I keep lots of my old art in portfolio books with archival plastic sleeve pages. I also paint mostly in sketchbooks/journals of which I have tons! So they are already in book form. I just don't have enough room for all those books! I love to collage idea!!
I don't know why I never thought to put them in photo books. Thanks for the idea. I decided to do one book for each of the five years that I have been painting. Book 1 already arrived and it is fabulous. I included all my beginning paintings - the good, the bad and the truly ugly. Book 2 is on order and book three is completed and ready to order. It is great to see that I have actually improved over the years. Thanks for the great idea.
Take a part of a painting that you like and cut it to greeting card size (5x7 or 4 1/4 x 5 ½ and adhere it to the front of a card. And some lettering, and presto-a nice custom card!
John is hilarious and so sweet. Love all the ideas in the video and the comments. Jenna loved your course "The Art Within". Thanks for sharing this video!
I found some old art recently and had an idea to scan some old paintings and take them into Photoshop and play around with them. I was amazed that I could salvage some old stuff and turn them into useful prints for greeting cards. The process also gave me some good practice using technology. I actually gained a few new portfolio pieces by recycling some old ideas. Thanks for the inspiration. You two never disappoint!
A friend gave me a great idea to buy dollar store frames and donate them to a charity. My friend took several of my paintings and sold them at her church thrift sale they were having to make money for a women's shelter
He is so cute!!!! I definitely will do the first suggestion! I am just learning watercolor and believe my little vignettes will look adorable in a book! I think my Granddaughters will treasure it someday!
Great ideas. I paint for fun, why else? I mix using sheets or pads with sketchbooks (cotton only). I find it’s a nice way to keep work neat and clean while also seeing progress, hopefully, all in one place. I think the idea of photographing work and then having a book printed is excellent. Or even turn some photos into calendars as gifts. Thank you.
I love the idea of putting artwork into books. I have numerous handmade watercolor and mixed media journals, store bought as well. Some I’ll squirrel away for my grandkids to come across when they are older, but I could definitely put majority into one of those books. Great ideas….💕from NC
Love the book Idea, it's amazing how many paintings you collect over the years. I have a few from when I started some 21 years ago but generally I paint on the back of the bad ones or just bin them. After all this time there would be too many for a small house. Sometime my Wife will claim them to use as a backing for the cards she makes for family and friends, birthdays, there are more each year, anniversaries and special events. Loving your work 🎨🖌️🖌️
I’m a school librarian so I cut them into bookmarks and sometimes write an inspirational little something on them. There’s a never ending supply of happy kids.
Hodge Podge, LOL. These are good ideas! Thank you. With my failed WC paintings, I'll cut them into bookmarks to keep or give away because there are some elements that are nice.
1. Scan it or take photos and put it in a book. Pay a company to print the book for you 2. Put it in a time capsule e.g. in a weatherproof box and bury in backyard or just store it 3 . Make a collage of it 4. (For the ones you don’t like) Use them as scrap paper. For some release/closure, tear them up or burn them. 5. Cut out the bits of paintings you like and glue/pin it on a cork board or something. General: Enjoy the process and reflect on the art as you go. Note what you like and don’t like. Realise how far you’ve come. Let go.
Great ideas! I especially liked the photographing and making a keepsake kind of book, then setting the original piece free (to recycling). I've used some old art to make envelopes. I do paper crafting stuff and I have an envelope punch board that makes custom sized envelopes. I've also made small folded gift boxes and cut up parts of paintings into shapes to add to hand made greeting cards. Also bookmarks. And, for paintings I really didn't like, I used them in creating support or thickening layers inside handmade books and scrapbooks.
I’ve heard you reference John so many times, but seeing him talk really fills my heart! He’s such a genuine, caring guy, so full of love and compassion for the person behind the artistic process. He speaks like he cares for the artist’s heart like a little birdie learning to flyyy 🥹 No wonder you blossom so well - he’s a gem to have and really is the best supporter to have. You’re blessed Jenna ❤️
Love that you had your handsome husband present his ideas. Great teamwork is what really what helps make you the success that you are. I love the book idea and inspiration cork board. 😊💕
John is so awesome, love you both! Great ideas. Keeping track of my progress helps me motivated, sometimes i look at older photos especially when i am particularly harsh at myself and my paintings, seeing the difference helps me be more kind towards myself. Thanks for the inspo
1. Cut up old art into different shapes. Use those shapes to make new abstract art. 2. Hole punch art and put into a binder. 3. Cut into thin strips. Weave the strips. Use string to pin up or decorate a Christmas tree. 4. Cut 1 inch strips and use as bookmarks.
I take a photo of everything I paint…the good, the bad and the ugly. I have folders on my phone “Art Mine” (everything I paint), “Art Ideas” (things I want to paint), and “Art Progress.” The progress folder has about 20 photos of my paintings. Friends would ask to see my work, and this photo folders has just enough to show them without going through all the thousands of other photos on my phone.
Diane Anton says to turn them over and use the backs. I started making my “art” smaller, like 1/4 the page. They are like a big deck of cards. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
From a former 1st grade teacher.....Donate to school for students to use as bookmarks, card covers, etc. so kids can write a Mother's Day note on the back or inside. Cut in strips to use as bulletin board border . The paper is so nice and thick that the old artwork can be used so many ways in the classroom.
Love the ideas! Here is another one: paper flower bouquet 💐 If you paint a lot of flowers and leaves, cut out the ones you like and make a new bouquet out of them. Looks great on presents 😃🌸
Thank you so much! I have a ton of paintings I can total should do these things too. I totally thought about digitally making a portfolio. But never knew how to make one. So thank you so very much
First when I saw the thumbnail with the albums, I thought you take the old paintings cut them in even size and bind them together in a book. Maybe because my wish is to learn bookbinding 😄 But your idea with the scanning and print it in a nice album is more cleaner and more neat. But yeah If you directly bind them together then there you have an original artwork book/album 😃All the other ideas are great. And like other people here I also use a lot of my old paintings as bookmarks 😊
Yup! Thanks so much! Good ideas. I think I'm going to make a box and put it in my attic somewhere, maybe more than one, and then years after I've long forgotten about them and sold the house somebody else will have to find them when they go to replace the insulation. Same concept for the garden....😂
John. You would be an outstanding motivational scrap art speaker. You could do fantastic TedTalks.. Way to go Mr. Rainey, with those genius ideas. THANKS!!!🤔🖌🤔🖌🤔🖌
This is fun! I’m def getting Parks and Rec vibes lol. They have a time capsule episode, and an episode where they hodgepodge together all of their different art works! Anyway, love your content! Keep up the good work :)
The ones I don’t like, I give them to my 5 years old to do with as he likes, haha, he always loves them so I release while he indulges before it goes to its final resting place… the bin! 😂 I did think about recycling it into making new paper, I’ll have to see how that goes 🤔 it definitely won’t be white, it’d have its charm for sure 😂
Cut them into 3/8 inch strips and weave them into a placemat. Mix up the strips so they are not all from the same painting. Group by color or tonal values. Placemats can then be covered with clear Contac paper.
You can add more paint and use a brayer to cover some of it up to use as a background. You can also use a gelli plate. I made a large gelli plate since it was less expensive than buying it. Reusing old art/ practice art with a gelli plate is wonderful. Yes, John is awesome.
U2 humans are the best ❤ A perfect match made in Heaven for sure. John, you talk like Jenna ......Artiests 😂😂😂 you have so much in common, I can see that ❤❤❤ I'm a paper (Junk Journal Artist and Scrapbooker) so all my watercolor paintings I don't like I cut into tags for my pockets, jounraling cards, book covers, greeting cards, a masterboard, etc. BUT John, I love the idea of creating an art book and it's a great way to give my boys my artwork, seeing I have so many plastic bins of their artwork over the years, from creating at home to all their school artwork; they are now 25 and they still want to keep it all 😂🎉 Thanks for all the tips, you are just the best and blessings to the two of you and your daughter......God sent her two great humans to raise her, love her and teach her how to be a great human ❤❤❤❤ xo
There’s this Cape Town artist called Lorraine Loots and she created those hardcover books to collate her daily paintings, think the book is called 365 paintings for ants 🐜 It’s so cute and really doesn’t take up too much space
Jenna and John, Hi! Totally love the idea of scanning old art work and ordering a photo album. You guys are super cute and super talented, but please, please, please don’t torture us by standing next to a struggling house plant that is wilting and in serious need of watering and TLC. It was so hard for me to focus 😢. I hope you save your plant. Love you guys.
John ripping the painting got me tearing up 😅😢 😮i think we get way to attached and emotional to art to want to tear it up. But I guess I should keep an open mind and realize it could be cathartic 7:13

Im so doing this!
This is a wonderful idea!
You could make some book marks for some of the old painting you have laying around.
Lol we’ve all done that, packed and posted a piece and then realized forgot to photograph it 😂🤦🏻♀️
When my mom passed we found beautiful drawings she did in college. Some I never remember even seeing. I’m glad she kept them packed away! ❤❤❤
I tore up old practice paintings, etc and used my paper making screen and frame to make handmade sheets of paper. The sheets of paper turned out beautifully, and it was satisfying, as well as useful!
I love this

love the idea of cutting out the parts of the paintings that you love
I did a painting of a field of flowers. I hated it. I cut it up for scrap strips. Well, they made really pretty bookmarks instead!
I've done that - 30 years ago, and I still have the bookmarks!
You could sell the book marks? 📖 lololol
So fun! Love all these ideas! It has the creative juices flowing... create a scrapbook of your old art, either whole pieces or cut out the pieces you like and create a collage. Use them in your sketchbook and take notes of what you liked and didn't like, key learnings etc.
Watch out Jenna! John's gonna steal your job! Love the B roll of him 'digging up' your backyard. I always love a bit of humour in your videos.

Loved this! Such good ideas. John Rainey rocks! 🎉❤
All of these are great ideas. I have already been overpainting to use again for practice over. Makes me feel better about paper NOT going to waste. Ty
Love that you had your handsome husband present his ideas. Great teamwork is what really what helps make you the success that you are. I love the book idea and inspiration cork board. 😊💕
I actually filled my first sketch book with all kinds of art cutouts that I loved.
did this too

John I absolutely loooove your first idea with the albums!!! Definitely taking this one. Thank you!!!
Here is another one: paper flower bouquet 💐
If you paint a lot of flowers and leaves, cut out the ones you like and make a new bouquet out of them. Looks great on presents 😃🌸
Thank you John for your fun ideas.
Wow! So timely...have boarded so much of my art...
Thank you so much! I have a ton of paintings I can total should do these things too. I totally thought about digitally making a portfolio. But never knew how to make one. So thank you so very much
Good ideas. The video was fun to watch.
Fun ideas. Definitely going to do the collage and pinning up the parts of my paintings that I love. I think I could practice composition with cutouts.
Fantastic ideas!! My progress is a way of learning 🎉😊

Yup! Thanks so much! Good ideas. I think I'm going to make a box and put it in my attic somewhere, maybe more than one, and then years after I've long forgotten about them and sold the house somebody else will have to find them when they go to replace the insulation. Same concept for the garden....😂
Hodge Podge!! 😵💫🤔😁😂😂
John is cute!😊😁
Love it!❤
John. You would be an outstanding motivational scrap art speaker. You could do fantastic TedTalks..
Way to go Mr. Rainey, with those genius ideas. THANKS!!!🤔🖌🤔🖌🤔🖌
Such a brilliant video
This is fun! I’m def getting Parks and Rec vibes lol. They have a time capsule episode, and an episode where they hodgepodge together all of their different art works!
Anyway, love your content! Keep up the good work :)
He’s adorbs. Love the ideas!
John's a natural and these ideas are great 👌 🥰
The ones I don’t like, I give them to my 5 years old to do with as he likes, haha, he always loves them so I release while he indulges before it goes to its final resting place… the bin! 😂 I did think about recycling it into making new paper, I’ll have to see how that goes 🤔 it definitely won’t be white, it’d have its charm for sure 😂
Cute, you two have the exact same mannerisms!
Thanks Friend, your work feels pretty 😍
Cut them into 3/8 inch strips and weave them into a placemat. Mix up the strips so they are not all from the same painting. Group by color or tonal values. Placemats can then be covered with clear Contac paper.
Awww your hubby is super cute! I love him burying his art time capsule, it made me giggle 😂 Great video guys!
I love that collaging idea! 😍😍
All really great ideas ty guys 😅 btw this is my fave video u guys have done hahah too funny
You can add more paint and use a brayer to cover some of it up to use as a background. You can also use a gelli plate. I made a large gelli plate since it was less expensive than buying it. Reusing old art/ practice art with a gelli plate is wonderful. Yes, John is awesome.

Round of applause 👏
Love the keepsake book, I've done it with my daughters artwork, not sure why I never thought of doing it for my own work 😅
Great ideas!! ❤️ the book & collage ideas.. John is adorable!!
