Take note.When changing an adverb clause to a phrase,you eliminate the subject and the verb of this adverb clause,and use a gerund instead.

+Ruel Balverde Yes, THAT'S ALL..IF YOU HAVE A SENTENCE WHICH CONTAINS THE VERB TO BE THEN YOU CHANGE IT TO ONLY THE ING FORM IN SAID VERB; E.G. While I was driving to work, I got stuck in traffic.
you change it to: While driving to work, I got stuck in traffic. in other words you only ommit the verb to be and it's done.

Once the clause has been reduced to a phrase, has the sentence then also changed from a complex sentence to a simple sentence?

That would fit the definition of a simple sentence, but it's not an easy sentence to put together. A phrase is a phrase. When appended to an independent clause, I think the sentence would still be considered simple.

@@Learnamericanenglishonline Thank you for your reply. I asked the same question on another channel with a similar video, and I liked their description. They said although we may argue that it is a simple sentence it could be easier to explain it as a reduced or shortened form of a complex sentence. However, it is not so important to define the sentence types. It is probably more important to know how to correctly construct the sentence types.
