I have been looking for this song since it came out. It took me 11 years. ELEVEN YEARS. I just turned 23 a couple weeks ago. It took half my life to find a song about forgetting a song. She literally warned me this would happen
I'm glad you found her again. ❤
that's actually wild
happy 23.6th birthday
@@lnstall_Wizard ill tell you something wild
meanwhile, I just googled "it's like forgetting", and this was the first result
"You're using your headphones to drown out your mind" is like OH GOD, RIGHT IN THE FEELS.
You're**
+Good Mythical Night I don't think she is saying you are headphones. lol. Your is actually correct. "Your" being possessive an "You're" being short of "you are".
+Reigne Fixed. Thanks.
+J Troyer No, No! You were correct before!
"You ease in your headphones to drown out you mind".
My comment was directed at Good Mythical Night.
Your means possessive, and they are Your headphones.
You're is short for you are. You don't mean to say that you are headphones.
+Reigne Nope. Good Mythical Night was correcting the first word of the comment. J Troyer said "Your". It should be "You're" because it's saying "You are using your headphones". He fixed it thoughz
I love how her songs mean something just a little bit different to every person. That's when you know you're listening to true poetry.
I wish there was an 'adore' button instead of just a 'like' button. I WOULD HAVE CLICKED IT
Only Regina can be silly and classy at the same time, air drumming that typewriter into
zhulia XD You’re so right
I'd love to here her cover Wuthering hights by late bush
She is the greatest of all time❤️
YEEET YEEET YEEET 😎
Regina es como una niña que sabe tocar el piano.
This was the first Regina Spektor song I ever heard, and it still holds a special place in my heart.
Abbs Same ❤️ Now I have been blessed by her beautiful music!
Same here!
Me too!! Holds a place just like the song Down by the Water by Maki Mae, have you heard it? ruclips.net/video/IDvzd7xv_qw/видео.html
December 2010, 15-year-old me was preparing for a bone marrow transplant as the last step in treatment for acute myeloid leukemia and I stumble across this song on iTunes and I become obsessed with it, listening to it constantly. It just got me "It's like forgetting the words to your favorite song" = being diagnosed with cancer "You're using your headphones to drown out your mind" = dealing with treatment. This song is what I would tell everyone to listen to if they want a taste of what was going on in my head. This summer I was out driving and this song came on, I hadn't listened to it in years, as soon as it started I was sobbing.
I simply cannot describe what this song means to me.
This story is beautiful. I hope you meet her someday!
Thank you for the story - Regina is healing
I’m glad you’re still here to tell your story, Naomi. Thank you for sharing it. Wishing you all the best in this crazy 2020 world we live in.
Good to know you're over that d@^^N3d leukemia!!
I hope the op went well dear and that you got better. Your comment touched me. I knw it says 1year ago but I hope you got better🤗❤
I cried when I found this song for the first time in a decade
😢 still crying

been there :)
"Eet" is the backspace button on a type writer that allows you to go back and fix a mistake. Instead of wishing you could fix a mistake, reflect and learn from it. I love this song!
FINALLY THE TITLE MAKES SENSE TO ME
+Jackson Catlett and the video!
Thank you, finally my life makes sense
+Kelly Clark (the10principles) Hate to tell you two, but that just isn't true. The only references to 'eet' are back to this song. The explanations of eet being the backspace key all reference this song as the source.
What do you do when you forget the words to a song? You hum. She like's humming. This is like an Ode to creativity and her humming which lead to her writing songs and to J. D. Salinger who is all about doing your own thing for yourself whether anyone likes it or not. It worked out for her and Vonnegut. Vonnegut agrees however he did say "Write to just one person and no one else" and I think he meant one person other than yourself. Notice that her piano is her typewriter and the over-sized man's wrist watch. I can see why she connects with Salinger though. I totally could see Salinger though before I knew she liked his book 9 Stories.
Her voices is so captivating
all of them?
i hAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS SONG FOR SO LONG BECAUSE ALL I KNEW WERE THE LYRICS "EEE EEE EET EET EET"
but that's the name of the song
it should have been easy
OHHH MYY GOSH CONGRATS BOY!
I thought it was "EAT" so ya that took forever to find
this is fantastic, lol I'm glad you found it.
I thought this song was my favorite, but i cant remember the words.
Jason VanBenschoten What you did there. I see it.
Jason VanBenschoten true. 69th like btw
don't you mean you see eet?
Try moving your feet
I love her so much. That I decided to show all her videos to my 6 year old daughter and introduce her to great woman, with awesome personalities. Well she loved it but when she saw this particular video, first thing she asked was "what is that thing, is it a cash register"
Lol makes me feel old
Im only 23 but I know what it is. What I can't believe is after about 9 years of loving this song I only recently learned the function of the eet key. Even with a about 5 of those years knowing the video. I mean I think I knew the key was going back in the video. I just never knew it was real and had that function etc. In real life.
i don’t know if you’ll see this because you said this 7 years ago my own mom bought me one of her CDs when i was pretty young and everyday in the car we would listen to her music. i am now 16 and still find myself coming back to her music listening and remembering it makes me feel so happy and warm hearted and i’m really glad i got to share those memories with my mom i’m really glad she got me that cd i’m sure your daughter is going to come back to this music when she is older and a teenager and remember listening to it with you and it’s going to make her happy ♥️♥️
@@Pootrootbeer so yes still have my RUclips same as always and my daughter is older and this made me feel much older and my daughter know a teen. Amazingly is into anime and all the things I loved so at the same time I am feeling older but it’s all worth it. 🤣

It's like forgetting the words to your favorite song
You can't believe it
You were always singing along
It was so easy and the words so sweet
You can't remember
You try to feel the beat
Eet, eet, eet, eet
Eet, eet, eet, eet
You spent half of your life trying to fall behind
You're using your headphones to drown out your mind
It was so easy, and the words so sweet
You can't remember
You try to move your feet
Eet, eet, eet, eet
Eet, eet, eet, eet
Someone's deciding whether or not to steal
He opens the window just to feel the chill
He hears that outside a small boy just starting to cry
'Cause it's his turn but his brother won't let him try
It's like forgetting the words to your favorite song
You can't believe it
You were always singing along
It was so easy and the words so sweet
You can't remember
You try to move your feet
It was so easy and the words so sweet
You can't remember, you try to feel the beat
She's as talented as she's beautiful. 😍
The typewriter is her instrument, and so is her piano.
I don't think this song has some esoteric meaning. It's simply about loss; or about having something that's so familiar taken away from you. You're in the dark without it, depressed and awkwardly trying your best to get it back.
"It was so easy and the words so sweet
You can't remember, you try to feel the beat"
Snowcake Carter EET on a type writer is the button used to type over a mistake, kinda like a backspace.
i stabbed a man with a trident once and before he died he told me many of life's secrets such as, the 23 flavors of Dr.Pepper and what EET stood for...also i goggled it...MURICA
@George you said that perfectly!! This song hit you in the deep
This was my favourite song a while ago but I always kept forgetting the words which is fun because of the lyrics haha!
eet
One of those songs that wherever you are in life, you feel like it was written specifically for you.
I absolutely adore this song. I had completely forgotten all about it for years, & then on one of my hardest weeks I’ve had all year learning that someone I deeply care about might not have long left to live, it echoed ever so slightly in the background of my mind, & with the help of my older sister, we remembered it from when we were younger & would sing it together on our car rides after we moved out together from our parents house. As soon I heard it play just now, I had to sit down on the ground of my kitchen to sing it with my eyes closed. This song never fails me, it catches me everytime. It’s like my souls bestfriend. I am crying, but I am so incredibly grateful. ❤️🩹
regina is so artistically creative. she brings new magic to each of her songs she is a pleasure to watch and listen to.
i've always known that the title says 'eet' and has no relation to eating
however, this song accidentally got into my mp3-player when i struggled with anorexia and it made the right thoughts appear in my head
i hope they are right
❤️
+Julia F. thats so amazing!
+Julia F. funfact: in dutch 'eet' means 'eat' :p
Eet is a backspace on a typewriter.
Reading this made a huge smile on my face. :D
a perfect and touching vocal simplicity...her clips always come with a lot of art and originality..
her voice is amazing
Not amazing. Sublime.
her voice, her lyrics and her music... just perfect
lyrics don't work with her music and her sounds can't be imitated. She is amazing
Doug McKenney WOW. SYNONYMS
Chuck Norris Not necessarily. Amazing doesn't connote fearing that it will end. Sublime, however, does. But you're right. Synonyms. You're right. I love internet jabs. They're so...swEet.
It was so greasy, and the sauce so sweet. Eat. Eat. Eat.
I'm bewitched by this song but this comment was the first thing to make me laugh today
+Alex Fisher Bravo *wipes a tear*
haha😆😆😆😆😆
+Alex Fisher this made me smile too much
I love your version. It made me laugh. thanks. XD
EDIT: Welp, it was a myth all along! Haha
ORIGINAL POST: I've always loved this song, but I never knew the significance of the word "eet". All this time I just thought it was a playful sound she uses in the song, but today I found out that it's an actual button on a traditional typewriter (I grew up with an electric one) that allows someone to type over other words in an attempt to fix errors (but not actually erase them).
That just totally blows my mind and I have a better appreciation for the song.
Really? I had thought it was just a term made up for the song, not something that actually existed.
Not true
And more: "I eat" is in dutch language "Ik eet", to eat is "eten", so no further explanation necessary, I guess...
@@SkeletalSystemBones Yeah it's just a joke, no big deal.
6 years old comment, but for the sake of people who read it in the future; the above seems to be an urban legend. At the very least in english, no "eet" key has ever existed on typewriters. There was simply an arrow or "space back" key.
First song I ever heard by Regina. My older sister introduced me to it so long ago it's hard to remember and I'm so glad she did. Thanks for helping me develop a good music taste, sis
Eet is about starting over, which gives this song such a beautiful meaning.
...Some memories slip away through the cracks of our minds, but leave fibers behind so that we know there’s something missing.. "Penpal"
I knew this would be a good song when she said “It’s like forgetting the words to your favorite song” after that I just loved it more and more
Best singer EVER!
Her voice is sublime and the lyrics so meaningful! Absolutely love her ♥
Watch her in interviews etc. She has so much genuine life to her.
I will never forget her concert I attended. She was not unlike a little girl performing publicly for the first time, blushing and surprised that people like her. Combined with her undeniable talent, it left a great impression. Great artist.
I went ti see her a month or so ago, such a cute little voice, so quiet. But then she starts singing. It was indescribable.
The song used to come on at the grocery store I used to work at overnight STOCKING All the time. Every time it came on all my fellow coworkers groaned because I sang along at the top of my lungs.
Lol 😂
That's where I first heard the song and was like WHAT IS THIS SONG XD
Lol! That will be me as soon as I find out how to set up a big speaker in my balcony
Even when the world is falling apart, Regina is there, somehow still making sense of it all.
I applaud whoever Signed Her!!! Shes a very Special Talent!!!
Regina means queen in Latin, and she is the queen of music!
@Regina Spektor, you are so talented, your voice is unique and amazing, very strong but relax at the same time, difficult to find singers like you.
Who is listening on this third way of pandemic?
Best Regards
Only one word to describe this song: beautiful.
Saw you at the Bonaroo! years ago. the earth has turned now and you are the same. we stand!
The thing I love about you is the fact that yes.
Still here in 2023! Best song ever, thanks Regina!!
She's absolutely fantastic!!! 🎤🎹🎼👏🏻👍🙌
Regina Spektor both rocks & rules...
She's hot, she's cool - she's All-Temperature Spektor.
"Well, look at this!
Appears we got here just in the nick of time. What does that make us?
Big damn heroes, sir!
Ain't we just? "
My baby sister died of accidental overdose in 2011 and though she never knew this song it resonates so hard. The human experience is nothing to dismiss
Love this one. Very special lyrics, nice beat and Regina's wonderful voice. The surreal setting of this video makes the whole piece fine art.
"You spent half of your life, trying to fall behind..." THAT part when I first heard this song smashed me.
The meaning of this song, is amazing. It's like, depression and forgetting how good happiness felt, so you just have to backtrack your life and start over to make it better. It's so clever using a typewriter for this song. This song, is so good.
I think this song is about growing up and realising that living in this world isn't as easy as you thought it was going to be
Me: *sings along amazingly remembering half the lyrics after many years*
She is a musical genius.
I've gone 5 years between times I've listened to this song, and the second it came back, I couldn't remember the words, yet when it was time to sing, my mouth and vocal chords made the words on their own, perfectly as I remembered.
This song is my childhood, and makes me feel a sense of somber that makes me so happy and sad all at the same time.
Miss you Regina, where are you in the world of muisc? I want hear nee songs of your amazing voice!
*new
I miss her TnT
found her
she has a new album coming out this month (septemebr) and ik she is in Toronto October 20th
Listen to her new song Bleeding Heart :)
Such a beautiful voice one of the best singers out there
Today's singers all pretend to be her. Like I'm not even joking, just listen to all the popular singers in 2021-- they ALL try to sound like Regina and they're not even trying to hide it.
I enjoy her music so much, her voice has like a joyful melancholy
She is so incredibly beautiful & underrated.
She's just so gorgeous, isn't she?
Yeeeeeeeeeeeet
First time I've listened to this song in years, first time I heard it was a cover at a high school talent show, I thought it was beautiful then, and still beautiful now. This isn't really the music I usually listen to but damn, this song is pretty.
Why is this song so special?
This song is so beautiful.
is it ironic that I have just eased in my headphones to drown out my mind whilst listening to this song?!
Yes
the same
Gracias

It's ur other part.

Eet describes a world of nonpermanent memory in which anything can be forgotten. A world of obliteration in which the parts of you that remember certain qualities about yourself can eet. They can be taken away to your dreams and this is synonymous with memory loss because they do not return in your dreams and are assumed to be "eeten" by the black void in your memory. But they are simply stores forever barely outside your grasp.
God bless Regina
She is beautiful in every way possible

+Flyleaf4lyfe fandompolice There might be a lyric video in RUclips ( I had one, but it might've been deleted? IDK)
For those wondering, eet is almost like the backspace button on a typewriter. This song is about her being depressed and she is talking about how her life has changed and she is trying to "backspace" her life and start over.
or delEET?
you r my best friend and I love u alix this is miranda

Strangely enough I understood it since I first heard the song.
@cjmaloI mean, it's literally the name for the backspace on old typewriter, and showing the typewriter in the video confirms it. Don't be willfully ignorant
Thank you Regina Spector.
For inspiration.
Ahh! Regina Spektor, always has been one of my favorite musical artists.
Why don't songs like this get nominated and win Grammy's?
Love this Song... 90210 Season 2 💙
Regina Specktor is an angel! She sure does sing like one
She's smashing the typewriter like a 3-yr old, other that that, this is awesome
It's replacing her piano/beat

REGINA IS EVERYTHING I NEED DURING QUARANTINE ❤
love this women. She is so sweet __ __ __ __ __.
When you're listening to songwriters like Regina Spektor and, for example, Kate Bush you just can't seem to stop comparing other music with theirs, and notice how superior their music is in ways of subjects, compositions and depth. That's when you know you're listening to pure gold.
getting obsessed with this song AGAIN after nearly a decade regina you are wonder
This song allways gives me a good cry! dont know why but i think this is how an angel would sing.
She is so beautiful. I almost forgot.
I haven't listened to this song in almost an entire year and At work last night my boss said "what are you singing?" and i didn't know... so we spent five minutes trying to find this song.
I will always Love this song.
Regina is queen 🙌🏼
This song gives me the chills...pure perfection.
Funny how I never seem to remember how this song goes! It feels like it's on purpose, :D
You're not alone...
I read this comment and realised ten minutes what you meant - clever :)
Heheheheheh
No puedo creer que este video sea del 2009 y tenga tan solo 6.848.328 visualizaciones a la fecha. Es hermosa la canción, como el video.. Regina Spektor sin dudas, una gran artista! ♥
Used to listen to this all the time, I heard it on a short video and instantly recognized it. I can't believe I ever stopped listening to this gem.
Wow I got chills from how amazing that instrumental solo was
She is literally next generation tori amos I love them both so much!
A friend with good taste in music sent me here
It's like forgetting.. the words.. to Reginas songs
I don't think I'll forget the words to my favorite song anytime soon, it goes something like this "It's like forgetting, the words, to your favorite song. You can't believe it(iiittt), you were always singing along."
"When she describes forgetting the words to a favorite song, its her way of saying she (or the character she’s signing as) has forgetting/losing enjoyment in things dear to her. They’re becoming depressed, and their sudden realization surprises them, since things like music were important facets of their lives, something simple and easy to fall back on, but they now can’t seem to enjoy things as easily. They (the chatacter) are losing control over their method of escape from daily life, and they want to try to find the “beat” again, or more accurately, their rhythm/way of life they had followed so nicely before.
Eet is the backspace of a typewriter, but it didn’t delete letters, it wrote over them. The making character in the song can’t go back in time and erase mistakes/signs of depression/regrets, but they can cover them up.
Then they give background to how important music was to them. It was a method of escapism, a getaway from daily life. It what they would hide behind. Now they wish that could still be enough to escape the sadness they fel, but it’s not, so as they try to remember how to enjoy things again, they force themselves to move forward.
when it comes to the whole “stealing and children fighting outside the window” part, I get a little confused. But I think it’s contrasting a more serious situation of possible planned theft to children being selfish by taking someone else’s turn. It does this to show that samilar problems often exist in youth like they do in adulthood, just usually on a smaller scale, even thought it may feel just as big. This expresses a yearning for these simpler times where whenever you were frustrated you could cry in public and, while not necessarily approved, was more acceptable at a young age.
and some of the words repeat here, emphasizing the sense of loss they feel.
basically, they are falling into a depression, or are just realizing that they have been depressed all along, losing enjoyment in things like music, and they want to go back to how things used to be. they try to cover up any signs/mistakes and move forward, all while wistfully reminiscing of when things used to be simplier."
""eet" is an old backspace key on a typewriter. Rather than erasing, it allowed a typist to go back to where the previous letter was, and type over it. Considering Regina is typing on a typewriter in the video, and pressing the "eet" key, maybe she's hoping for a backspace in life? To re-do parts of her life, or get back to the way she felt before?
For me, this is a song about sadness and depression, losing your happiness and your faith, your sense of being. Suddenly the world has changed, and you can't work out why - YOU have changed, you can't remember who you were, and you're trying as hard as you might to get it back: eet, eet, eet."
"‘Eet’ is an adjective used to describe a feeling equivalent to forgetting the words of your favorite song (as mentioned in the very beginning of the song, ‘it’s like forgetting the words to your favorite song’)
the song is mostly telling the story of losing feeling, becoming numb. ‘he opens a window, just to feel the chill’ it basically repeats lyrics that all lead towards the idea of not remembering being happy, and losing those happy memories/feelings."
"It/Eet refers to passage of time. First she relates it to favorite songs. Second verse she relates it to aging and procrastination. Then she mentions humans using music to make it go by faster. In third verse, she describes a human consumed in a morally ambiguous situation, but he becomes aware of passage of time through his memories. He hears children playing.
It “rhymes” with Eet, the key on old keyboards, as described in the other answer."
That's what I found. That's what it means.
This is all quoted from multiple different people who clearly understand it. Don't bother arguing in this reply section.
I like bunnies.

I like how she is dressed like somebody from 1948.
gibberconfirm that’s so specific?
That’s her style :)
I like her style
Beautiful... Brings me tears of joy...
Regina Spektor will forever be one of the most passionate musicians that will always be remembered.
She doesn't need to be half naked in her videos, she doesn't need any kind of electro beat in her songs: this is why I love Regina Spektor. She's just amazing like this: she's gorgeous and her songs are full of love, pain, sadness, but even hope, mistake-forgivin'. I love so much her style, I grew with her music and I'll die listening to her songs... Just go on like this, Regina! ^^ My days are full of your music! *u*
