Awesome video! I personally sorted my basic bricks, plates and tiles by color and everything else by piece type such as studs, modified plates and technic parts. It just depends on how you use it and what pieces you use most.
really good jumping off point for organization. I have a few bins of bulk that I would like to eventually get around to. My one tip for organizing a collection is being honest as you sort and if there are pieces that you don’t think you’ll ever use- like friends colors or big molded baseplates- just sell/trade them off instead of trying to build your solution to accommodate.
@@firebirdbricks Hi do you have any specific links to the clear plastic trays or containers (don't know the real term for them) you use in the storage drawer itself. I noticed your drawers are filled with them, and i would like to do the same for sorting my own collection
Fantastic video! I’m working on reorganizing my collection and man it’s a pain changing how I’ve organized my LEGO for so long. Also your setup in the background with the blue lights looks sick!
I'm new with Lego, but I've already built a good collection of models and just bought some storage for the small extra pieces I've accumulated I think that for big pieces, sorting by color makes sense but for small pieces (like the extra ones that comes in sets) by type works better
Great video! And I really appreciate your acknowledgement of different perspectives/use cases. If you build lots of MOCs or sort a ton of Lego bricks or simply want to have bricks available when you need them, there's different things to take into account - many of which can affect your pocketbook and your own sanity! ;) I'll add a few of my thoughts here: - Akro Mills drawer organizers used to cost $25-28 only in 2021, but doubled in price at the end of the pandemic. Sometimes they were on sale for $20, even, but the current $50 price tag can be hard to justify. - A huge part about organizing is determined by how you build (which I'm thankful you touched on). If you MOC build, more often than not you want multiple parts of the same color (think rock work). So sometimes starting sorting by color family sometimes is the most useful over sorting down to the element. There's always a happy-medium. - Lastly, the time you spend sorting needs to be accounted for in one's approach. Sorting by color (families) is easiest and causes less strain, but sorting by element - while satisfying - has been known to cause insanity (not 100% certain, but pretty sure). So find that balance that works for you. Sorting by color families and then large element families (plates/bricks/tiles/slopes/wedges/etc) is the game plan I've stuck with since I build so many various things. Thanks again for keeping the endless Lego organizing and sorting discussion going!
I am sorting my lego bins as I speak and I tend to not have a whole heap of lego so i just sort them into flat peices, big bits, and little gremlin bits and things that that don't really fit anywere on the list. Then I plan to color code them. In the future I plan to separate these and sort them even further so it will be easier to find when I am building mocs. Thank you I found this video really helpful!
One year on Thanksgiving break, I sorted almost all of my LEGO. I sorted it into color because that was the way that made the most sense for my collection. It’s useful because say I want to build a Republic Gunship, I can just grab the white, red, and green bricks.
I know exactly what I want to do now thank you for the advice!!!! I was doing only by color before, but now I I will split up the larger containers of a single color
I've got like 50 or 60 Container Store plastic shoeboxes for my sorting system (plus a few other odds and ends like an old screw storage drawer set). Basic parts get sorted brick-plate-slope then color from there. Other parts are sorted by type.
Harbor freight has a 48 bin system for 20$ I bought 2 of these for the small 1x1 pieces, and it's so nice! I've also been using small sewing sorting bins i find at goodwill alot, and sort in general styles like you mentioned.
I love clear plastic drawers, and just filled them with smaller clear boxes, so I can take the parts out without taking out the drawers and there are tons of different containers to sort parts.
I really like and agree with the colour grouping idea... it saves space and its easier to find a piece from one colour as it contrasts with the other colours in the same drawer
the stanley screw boxes.. grab em, open them all up and start building. just sitting on a table with all the pieces you need. sorted bij form and moost also by colour. drawers have to be closet to reach the one underneath...
You could also do what I do and use shoeboxes, alcohol bottle boxes or piggy banks to store Lego pieces, like I do. Some big pieces or unique pieces like characters are important, so I use a coin box with a lid.
I do that too when I have little bit of pieces. But now MT collection grew and I'm sorting by category. Like one pile is bricks, Another is plates Another is snots And so on.
Great video! My sorting method consists of an ikea alex drawer desk and several akro mill drawers. I use the alex drawers for piece of larger quantities such as 2x4s, tiles, plates, etc. However I use the akro drawers for detailing pieces. This system works great for the sized MOCs I create.
I’m a bit of a guy who works sort of like the guys from Lego masters. I just love the feel of digging through a bin looking for *just* the right part. So for efficiency’s sake I just sort by usage. For example I’m mainly a bionicle/hero factory guy. So, bones, limbs, gears, tubing, heads, masks, weapons, feet, hands wings and tails all get their own bin. The little stuff like axles and pins get more thoroughly sorted because no one like looking for your last blue pin or red 2x axle at the bottom of a bin.
For "bulk" stuff...I sort by a blend of part-type and color. Like, all the 2x2+ bricks of a certain color, all the 2x2+ plates of a certain color, and so on. And the same for the 1x2+ bricks and plates, and the 4x4+ and so on. That way, anything that's commonly foundational that I'm likely to need a lot of, is all together by color for the most part, but its not a wildly mixed pile I'll never find specific pieces in. They're all pretty easily discernible. For specialty pieces, annoyingly tiny pieces, and things I'm not likely to need much of...but that can really be a real pain to dig through, I sort entirely by part type.
Pretty thorough video about the subject. What I pretty much got out of it is that there really isn't one was that stands out. What do you think about using the plastic pick a brick cups for storing? There has to be a method that can work with them.
I have two Alex units from ikea but I have tried both ways with the wall mounted from Amazon the thing I like about the bigger units is that if you are looking for parts you don’t have to open so many different things to find what you are looking for so it saves time but it really doesn’t matter all Lego is cool
Now that I came out of my dark age 6 years ago, I have been dealing with this sorting and organizing problem. Let me tell you, you are spot on with this video. I would like to add a few things I figured out over the last several years. Ask yourself a few questions: Do I have a permanent build area, or do I need my collection more portable? How large is my collection, and do I plan on adding to it over time? How do I build? Sets vs. Mocs What do I like to build? What you like to build is very important and will help you focus on how far to break down your inventory. If you enjoy Technic....then you will want to sort it out so you can find parts quickly and spend more time building and less time digging for parts. My personal preference is to set up a drawer system for the small parts you use most. I have mine right on my build table. The larger drawers work great for larger bricks, which I sort by size. 1x1 1x2...up to 1x6 and so on....2x2 2x3 2x4....the larger sizes get combined in to their drawer. I use Store House bins from Harbor Freight to organize my Technic collection because I don't use them as often, and I can take the inner trays out to my build area as needed. I mainly sort my parts by function/ size and not color unless I have an abundance of a certain color. Overflow parts get bagged in zip loc bags and stored in to the clear plastic shoe bins with lids. There is no "right way" to organize your collection. The main thing is to find what works for you, so you can enjoy your time building !
iris brand drawers are just as good and cheaper than akro-mils. also they are the ones that made the official lego drawers back in the day. the iris drawers are modular. u can take the top off and join 2 units together to make them taller.
I started sorting by part type but it really doesn't work because if I want to build a moc of dark tan, then I could just grab the dark tan bin and build where as if it's sorted by individual part then I would never be able to build a quick moc.
I was really looking forward to the video. Thanks for sharing your thought process on sorting. In my case I lack a dedicated space for my parts collection and use zip bags for part types, which are then packed in groups into larger bags. Your sorting method is really good, I unfortunately don't have space/money for so many small drawers. I sort by category in cheap plastic boxes, so Plates 1 x ... , Plates 2 x .... or Tiles 1 x ... . If I have parts very often, then I put them in my small drawer sorting system. Since I like to build MOCs, I also have IKEA sorting boxes, which all have a theme, so I have a beach box with plates of all sizes in tan or a forest box with plates in green and leaves, green slopes and flowers. This is far from the best variant, but actually works quite well and is just very cheap.
Yeah my problem is I want to build both star wars and world war 2 Mocs I like building big which is my problem. I often run out of parts and stuff and then I’m too broke or too impatient to order the parts and the quantity that I need

So how will I get it
Nice video
Thanks!
lmao HI ZUKO!!!
Wait people actaully sort. Man I’ve been doing this wrong for 20 years. In all seriousness though. Ikea drawers I’d see for bulk reserve pieces. Like bagged bricks and tiles. And baseplates. Cheap plastic shoe boxes for bulk bricks as well. If you can’t fit all the pieces of a certain element 2 by 4 bro kz
I know mark and Steven Ericsson
SNOT! 😝
heh I'm not that old with very little money and want to build Lego mocs
Im using PARKSIDE organizers for 17 $
No one should use bins and dump their lego in there
I like the indoraptor gen 2 purely because I have it and it’s blue 🤌
