One of those openings that make you say "I need to watch this."
that is quite literally what happened- i saw this in a compilation and thats why im watching this show LOL
Unironically made me watch the show; life-changing, it was.
You definitely need to.
I think the anime is boring
I agree, the intro is honestly the only good thing about this anime; maybe im too stupid to understand it but i was literally left with nothing after the last episode. The plot is too cryptic and confusing, and it moves at a snail’s pace. Characters are forgettable, dialogue is bland, its just not an enjoyable watch. And compare this to Evangelion that has similar existential and philosophical themes, but still manages to be gripping and engaging for the viewer.
starting with ''you dont seem to understand'' describe the story very well
😂😂😂exactly
“and you don’t seem to understand” its hits personal to me everytime .Let’s all love lain.
The best anime intro sung entirely in English, even in Japan
It wouldn't be an exaggeration to call both the song and the opening the best of all time.
It's great but not the best 💀
@@oogway3354 What do you think is the best then?
@@cryoge there is no best imo there all groundbreaking in there own way

Man, that late 90's to 2000's vibe of anime is just so good. Shows like Lain and Ergo Proxy really has some good songs in their opening.
don't forget texhnolyze, which somehow managed to be trippier than both lmao.
dont forget Welcome to the NHK
And the original Yu-Gi-Oh anime from around the same time, it's opening theme slaps hard. So, sooo damn good.
Cowboy bebop and its ending in english too
Gto, initial d and fate 2006 as well
I have never skipped that intro, such a nice anime to watch at a time when it's night
me neither. since i binged it, i kinda needed that time between episodes to reflect as well.
Has an ethereal otherworldly feel watching at night, especially with the intro playing.
I never got the intro, probably because I watched it on the internet archive
Same, the first part always gets me, and then its repeat.

I'm studying Lacanian psychoanalysis lately and it let me appreciate this intro a lot more: particularly the part in which time freezes, yet Lain keeps walking. Lain is a creature of what psychoanalysis calls the "symbolic order": language, logic, information. She doesn't really exist within the imaginary; her body is hardly relevant. Even when all bodies stop their movement, Lain remains in motion, for she doesn't need a body to be herself.

Real
I just recently watched Serial Experiments Lain, I love how unique it is and how it can be viewed in many different ways, and an intro I don't skip.
It's actually a scary accurate interpretation of the internet especially for a show made in 1998.
Many souls are lost on the internet, a slave to the algorithm and trends of the net.
Ok
Me too!! I don't skip the op
Skipping the intro is a cardinal sin.
im not finished with the show yet but i just fucking love this opening. so laid back and stylish
have you finished it yet?
We need answers hahahahahah
@@trisnm4116 Yes i did. Ive been struggling to think of a way to describe it, it was so abstract. I liked the art style and the atmosphere, but maybe some of the themes were lost on me. Ive already rewatched a few episodes, I will be rewatching again. It's only 13 eps
@@isley8915 I think the creators' idea of The Wired might finally be a bit outdated. I dont think they realized how much the internet would change into forcing people to use their real names as opposed to the 90s culture of using an avatar and creating a persona. But then again, the pervasive nature of modern day social media might prove them right.
Anyway, I love the character of Lain and I was sad I wouldn't be seeing her more when the series ended. I know people say she was supposed to be a blank slate, but I think there was a real personality there at times, it's one of the reasons the show was so good
This opening is just so ethereal and uncanny, it's one of those anime openings that, like, is just so weird and odd that words can't even explain it. Like, something you'd hear in a backrooms level or something, idk, it has a weird vibe to it, and I love it.
This song is mixed with just... nostalgic, melancholy feelings.
Same here my guy
It sits in a liminal space of our minds, reminiscent of a time that will never come back.
theres something of the eerie about lain in general
Thought I was the only one really creeped out lol!! Still going to watch it though
this intro gives off the vibe of regret and change, like when getting older and realizing all the past mistakes you made and cant go back and fix, and learning to accept those regrets and to move on.
That’s a perfectly good explanation
Everything except learning to accept. Lmao WE STAY BITTER OVER HERE😂
Thats powerful
We see Lain's three personalities here.
The first is shy, surprised Lain. This is the girl we get to know in the beginning. She's here, but also not here.
The second is insistent, demanding Lain. This is the "adult," mature Lain, her primary online persona and whenever she alters reality. She sings Boa's lyric: _"You know that it means so much."_
The third is the "troll," LAIN. Immature, she teases, mocks and is generally childish. Depicted here as a spy, this LAIN hurts people in the world around her, especially Alice.
From the beginning, the show wanted you to pay attention to Lain and think about how she acts.
Im pretty sure shes mouthing out "Lain" not singing that lyric
Blud thinks I am reading allat 😭🙏 (I did read allat)
I think she's just mouthing "Lain"
These characteristics can be found in your average human as well, look deep inside yourself you'll realise in this modern day with all the internet and stuff going on online. We are not really much different then lain, we too live by all these 3 characteristics that you've explained.
You forgot about lain who is ballin and fading
No joke i watched this for the first time this weekend and immediately after i finished it i rewatched the whole thing in 1 sitting. Obsessed

One thing I loved about Serial Experiments Lain is that it features surreal and avant-garde imagery and explores philosophical topics such as reality, identity, and communication. The series paints a dark depiction of a world fraught with paranoia, social alienation, and reliance on technology considered insightful of 21st century life.
This is from an AI lol I asked the exact same question
@@XRTViciousI think it's a straight rip from wikipedia

It's insane. Considering the anime itself is released at the dawn of the internet age. An actual prophetic way of seeing the internet, considering the way it is right now.

One of the most profound openings in Anime. I never quite understood what was going on in this series, but even on a purely emotional level there is a lot to be had here. The long shots of her face and eyes... You just feel some kind of understanding, like you know how she feels even if you can't quite say how.

There are a lot of animes with great soundtracks. Here's my personal favs, check them out.
I suggest you search the name of the anime and then type opening theme or end theme so youtube will lead you to the right video, otherwise use the title and artist.
Ergo Proxy: Opening is "kiri" by monoral. Ending is "Paranoid Android" by Radiohead.
Wolf's Rain: Ending "Gravity"
Legend of the Condor Heroes: Ending "blása" by Yae, I forgot the opening though it's quite good too.
Fushigi Yugi: Opening 1 and Ending 2 themes are awesome
Vision of Escaflowne: Opening 1
Samurai X: Opening 1, 2 - Ending 3, 4 or is it 5(It's gonna rain), 6(my favorite of the bunch)
Yu Yu Hakusho: Opening
Hunter x Hunter 1999: Opening 1 and 2(I like this better it's - taiyou wa yoru mo kagayaku by wino), Ending 1
This anime is as iconic as it's soundtracks.
Cowboy bebop: Ask DNA, The Real Folk Blues, Call Me Call Me, Words We Couldn't Say, Rain, Blue, Gotta Knock A Little Harder
Elfen Lied - Lilium
Bonus: Naruto Despaire(I really love this music)

Normal I don't like 60fps interpolation since it can mess up certain frames making it look worse, but this is a great application. The added frames makes it uncannily realistic, and the artifacts from the interpolation actually adds to the glitchy look of the intro. Really good case of using a technology's weakness as a strength.

0:28 I love these frames where Lain is recorded as if someone is documenting her sudden appearance on television
The last time I watched this was back in 2005, I convinced my parents to buy me this on a VHS Tape...
now that I'm 28 years old, this op is still a banger up to now. The fact that the anime itself predicted the overuse of internet and it's unforeseen consequences that may affect us negatively if we don't "touch grass" or should i say, take our lives seriously.
I was 14 and thought it was horror and meaningless... but as I got older I understand every bits of it that... "present days and present times" (a voice intro) played a role in the future technology times, many of these adolescent figures are spending much of their time and attention on the internet... not knowing that they're missing a lot of opportunities.
Every bits of it makes sense, it's almost the same as Evangelion in terms of how it expresses the message obscurely. You need to be in a right state of mind to understand the complex messages, or should simply... be open-minded. No need to over-analyze because it eventually comes right in your mind if you slowly feel the flow of the story.
It's not the theme, but the message. ('don't judge a book by its cover' - if that makes sense)
That's all, I guess... In case any of you are curious... I'm a long-time graduate of architecture studies. During those days I casually rewatch Lain because it played a lot of role in my life.
