Missed Paxton Lynch from the Broncos. 26th pick in the 2016 draft. Refused to study film and learn the playbook. Started 4 games in 3 years. Was the 3rd string by his 3rd year behind Case Keenum and Chad Kelly. He got released later that year when the Broncos got Kevin Hogan.
He then got signed and cut by the Seahawks and Steelers in 2019 and 2020.
Then he was the 4th string QB for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Then he was the 8th pick of the 12th round of the USFL by the Michigan Panthers.
He signed with the Guardians in the XFL in January 2023, but was benched in Week 1 and waived in April. He’s currently with the Brahmas.

Akili Smith has to be mentioned, not to highlight how awful a pick (Bungles could have taken McNabb), but to emphasize just how great and important Joe Burrow is. The Bengals are a transformed franchise, the potential for another franchise changing QB is in this draft.

    • @nuwildcat90

Donovan McNabb had already been taken #2 by the Eagles, after Tim Couch went #1 by the Reformed Browns. Suckili Stiff (er, AkiliSmth) went #3. Of course, his failure was rendered even worse since Mikey Boy Brown vetoed the trade offer with Mike Ditka when Ditka offered his entire set of draft picks as well as the next year's 1st round pick to trade up for Ricky Williams.

I think he gets an unfair rap a bit. Yeah he was a bust but how much of that is how San Diego handled QBs until rivers? Back then they’d toss a rookie in and then yank him mid season rather than letting him battle through. And then they’d throw them back in. Happened in his rookie year, he was injured his second year, and then they did it again his third year before they cut him. And immediately drafted again for Brees and then did the same thing to Brees too. Luckily Brees found his way there and then went to a franchise that supported him. They drafted Rivers to replace Brees quick too but Brees fortunately improved a bunch quickly. San Diego added to this a lot back then. And he gets seen even more poorly because of the Peyton aspect.
So many of these guys are examples of how if you get a better situation and support you may rise but if you don’t and you’re yanked in and out and not allowed to grow you fail. Peyton struggled a lot his rookie year but he was allowed to work through it. San Diego would’ve yanked him mid season. They just didn’t support these guys at all and sometimes part of it is recognizing what realistic chance you have to succeed. Ryan’s attitude was huge but you do wonder with a better environment that helped him and supported him what is possible because there are lots of sure things that have abysmal rookie years but when they are left to work through it they become great. Lawrence for instance. A San Diego wouldn’t have invested for him to grow like he did this year. So many guys get labeled bust without any attention paid to their environment.
