I have a 10 year old haflinger that I acquired a year ago. Has laminitis, was extremely high strung and spooky, got her vet checked and told it's possible she has Cushing's disease, because she sees a little bit of crusty neck starting. She's absolutely beautiful, got leather pads (frog support) for her feet, brand new diet of low starch/ sugars / no treats ... Getting ready to add apple cider vinegar to her diet and a slow feeder for her hay. Her diet has already changed her attitude, and she's absolutely beautiful. Her feet feel better and we started doing a little bareback which is a major milestone for her. So proud of my beautiful "Spirit".🐎❤️ Everything is just starting so I hope we caught it very early. She doesn't have a problem with her coat or anything else except for the laminitis and a very hard time with stress. She is not overweight. My horse is far from lethargic lol. She's just awesome and the prettiest halflinger I ever saw. The blood test they are talking about uses dexamethasone. Dexamethasone can cause a flare-up in horses that are already showing signs, such as laminitis in the feet. I would never do that test on my girl. I will just treat her diet like she has it.
A very educational and to the point video. I just feel the need to add that horses of all ages and breed can get this. I too thought that cushing was something (only) overweight and old ponies had. along with the laminitis. I was wrong as horse was diagnosed last year when he was 12. A very atypical example of PPID being only 12, normal weight and a thoroughbred. Almost all the sign and symptoms were present. He is on medication, but when tested here a couple of weeks ago, the result was still too high unfortunately.
Hi Katrine my mare was just diagnosed in the spring with Cushing’s also a thoroughbred. We put her one the prascend and she stopped eating grain apples and carrots. I had her on a full pill for almost 2 months and she didn’t get any better about eating, I had to drop her down to a half pill and it took a good month to get her back to her normal amount of grain and eating her apple and carrots. So I was just wondering how your horse is doing and what your using?
I would like to know why some vet’s perscribe Pergilyde vs. Perscend. Both drugs are pricey. My 16 yr old Shetland is on Perscend. She still has an appetite. She doesn’t have anymore flair ups of laminitis.
Pergilyde made my horse stop eating completely. 1/2 mg.! So now, as he is 31 (?had since 3 1/2, :) and has had about 3 years now, does not seem altered in any other ways and still ride him. Besides yellow hay, no molasses and switching from any senior feed (just sugar etc.), to alfalfa pellets and rice bran. Can I use flaxseed itself instead of the oil? thx
How can so many horses have it , how can one blood test confirm it ,, my horse has tested positive ,at 12 with no other symptoms other then laminatis after foot triming
Can Cushing's result in a heart arrhythmia? If Cushing's causes a cascade of hormonal imbalances, could it also be a cause for potential heart problems in horses?

I'm surprised you didn't mention a low starch diet. I've got two suspect Cushing's horses on low starch diets doing quite well without pergolyde.

Flies swarming a particular horse point to something wrong too.
