Bears are still living beings with organs and if those organs are perforated the being cannot sustain its biological processes. Where the problems comes in is that the parts of a bear where .22 can achieve sufficient penetration to perforate the organs are few.
Also, the size of the perforation matters. A .22 sized hole in a bear’s lung will kill it, in a few minutes to a few hours. A 2 inch hole will kill it now. I wouldn’t want to use something for hunting or defense which isn’t likely to have an immediate effect, if it has one at all.

CMMG .22 conversion for the AR works very well, is relatively cheap, and you dont need a whole new rifle. Heck, you could carry it with a mag and a 50rd box of .22 into the field with your main loadout.

    • @Kalbee
      @Kalbee Месяц назад +45

I think PNW guerrilla has a video on it and it pretty much killed their gas system on their AR after a few thousand rounds. But they did say you might be able to mitigate that by sending a mag of full power 5.56 through the gun after a range day training with .22lr

    • @Hatchet_Jack556
      @Hatchet_Jack556 Месяц назад +38

@Kalbee this is correct, the fouling will clog your gas system and CMMG recommends shooting a handful of rounds of 556 after a couple hundred rounds of 22lr. You could also build a cheap, dedicated 22lr upper

I have the CMMG kit, 1500 rounds through it. The mags suck to load, like a lot. My extractor had the tooth chip off so my extraction occurs sometimes. The firing pin spring also broke on it. Honestly, it is not a good tool to teach you how to shoot it is extremely unreliable even before these issues. I have tried expensive CCI all the way yo cheap Aguilla and it gets catastrophic malfunctions every other mag. If I did it again I would buy a used dedicated .22 AR instead. I have not had issues with my gas system but concur that accuracy is nonexistent. Even so, rimfire is frustrating to shoot because every 10 rounds you get a dud, I think rimfire is outdated. Use a 380 to hunt rabbits and at least it will go bang every time. I would not recommend training with rimfire unless you are practicing clearing jams. .22 is very good at jamming any gun.

She doesn’t enjoy guns or shooting a whole lot, but she enjoys shooting with me, because I’m there, we’re having fun together, and I don’t make her shoot anything that makes her feel uncomfortable. She is comfortable shooting her 22s, and if the world goes to hell I’d rather have her help me with an M&P 15-22 she knows how to use than with a 556 or 308 she’s uncomfortable using.

MILITARY rounds, sure, can go through some serious armor with that caliber, but the general rounds you can get with a 5.7 aren't much different than a 5.56 when it comes to ballistics. Sure it's a pistol vs rifle round, but you might as well be firing a rifle round out of a pistol. That's pretty much what 5.7 is. Either way, point of the matter is, 5.7 is low recoil and high power like a 5.56.

My daily carry. I live in a small mountain town surrounded by national Forest. Last thing I used it for was putting down a mulley somebody hit and just left there. Today, i took a hike with my boys and youngest girl. Having her strapped to my back made me a little less useful in a defense situation. We had one of those guys who was hiking down at the same time we were and kept stopping whenever we stopped to take a break. Throw a fit about defense all you want, but the 22 long rifle is more of a multi-purpose tool than any other caliber out there. Weirdly enough, I finished Hatchet with my oldest son yesterday in which the main character gets a hold of a survival rifle. Just a weird coincidence.

I feel like I have every base, short of Anti-Material, covered after a trim-down/modernizing/updating of my collection over the past few years.
Even with distilling a 20-year collection down to the neighborhood of 20 new Purpose-built tools, I still had 3 22LRs make my final cut.
A Henry with sentimental value, along with a Ruger Silent SR-ISB 10/22, and TBA Sicario Ruger 22/45 you could hunt squirrels in the suburbs with.
I also have a 300BLK JTAC Elf Owl bolt-action pistol/CGS Hyperion combo that I could quietly take a deer with.
Plus an extensive "End Of Times" set of Chaszel 12 gauge Caliber adapters that will let me shoot just about anything through my H&R Ultra Slug.

The first gun I ever shot was my dads .22lr M1 carbine clone. It's a really cool gun. Waaaaaaaay back in the day a company in West Germany produced rifles that looked very similar to the M1 carbine but chambered in .22lr. The mags held 15 rounds which at that time was very unusual. The first gun I ever owned was a Marlin model 70 that I inherited from my poppy. I still have it and it still gets shot from time to time. My second gun was a Remington 870 express youth model chambered in 20gauge. It's still a very good shotgun imo. It's a super handy size since it's the youth model.
Then...I went down the rabbit hole. Next gun was an AKM. Then a Glock 17. Then a bunch of AR15s, more Glocks, some Caniks, Sig, some more AKs, etc.

Accuracy testing with CCI Stingers are not the best way to test.
Let me say this: Every 22lr weapon is very ammo specific. With blowback weapons the name of the game is balance and timing. CCI mini mag in a Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin 60 are amazing IF you balance the recoil spring with the round. It's not unlikly to get 1.5inch groups at 100 yards. Also, cheap weapons have places where the handle touches the barrel. If you float the barrel, then you make it more consistent which equals accurate.
Then find which ammo run most consistent in your weapon and stick with it. 22lr can be finicky but with a few tweeks can be the most accurate thing you shoot inside of 100 yards.

I have by accident, found myself falling in love with 22mag. It's more expensive than 22LR but with the right ammo and the right gun you get almost twice the performance out of it in every metric. You can still carry a crap ton with you and it's easily effective to 150m and can reach out to 200m if required. No idea how it would stack up to armor but let's be realistic. If I'm mag dumping at you you're not going to stand still and take a bunch of shots in the plate. The odds of you catching a round in the arm or above the plate are relatively high and at 50-100m 22mag will zip right through you. It's still very limited but with my 22mag AR I can mag dump 15 rounds 3 MOA at 25m and tighter if I take my shots.
    I also have a little Rossi R22M with a 1- 4x that does 2 MOA at 100m with about a 2" hold over.

I got a Ruger 22 charger (pistol 10/22) with a raised red dot, super light 6"barrel, and a silencer. My kids love it and it's light enough for them to use for longer periods. I put a pad on the receiver for a cheek weld and it even works great for me.

Still got my 22 rifle I got when I was like 10 or 13 years old and have put thousands of thousands of rounds and still runs pretty good

In an alamo scenario defending the homestead, don't overlook the FIBSA factor you put on the marauders from multiple defenders throwing down heavy .22 fire from several semi autos. In Canada, for example, there's no limit on rimfire magazine capacity, and.22 is relatively dirt cheap, so you could call it the civilian version of suppressing fire.

Note for future reference - don't shoot a bunny after it has eaten Tannerite.
.22 long had the highest body count out of ALL calibers put together for the longest time. In all fairness, most of those kills were due to the criminal being shot by another criminal not taking the wound seriously, slapping a band aid on it and then dying in his sleep.
That said, a .22 long to the head from a Ruger 10/22 (or any .22 rifle) will end you, thus turning you into a loot drop for the guy with "only" a .22 long rifle.
The rifles are light, have no recoil and can easily be handled and shot by even a child, meaning it's a weapon the entire family can use if it comes down to it, never mind that they are also inexpensive - some pellet rifles run more than a .22 bolt action or a used semi-auto.
The ammo is cheap, compact and light, with a brick of 500 rounds of .22 long weighing not much more than a box of 50 45 ACP and not costing around double for a good brick - Stinger mini-mags for me.
It's also hands down the most common ammo out there and often ignored in a crisis as folks focus on the "real" calibers, which also means that finding it in an EOTW scenario, along with replacement parts or firearms is also going to be very easy.
Toss on an inexpensive scope since you realistically aren't killing stuff past 100 yards and you're set.
Speaking of dropping things - talk to your grandfather as he has either personally or knows someone who harvested white tail deer with them - throat and head shots only of course - they can also drop a wild pig with a shot to the head, so in a pinch, you are not limited to just eating rodents.
As such, a Ruger 10/22, a bag of mags and an ammo can of Stinger mini-mags is at the top of my SHTF kit - technically two Rugers as the wife isn't comfortable with any rifle but that one.

Great job guys, very entertaining. I carried a Ruger 10/22, in my truck for years, not willing to risk one of the ARs in the turck. knowing a skilled person with a 22 is still very dangerous. Sadly not long ago I lost that rifle in a breakin of my truck. sad to lose her but happy it wasn't one of my 2k ARs. I'm replacing the 10/22 with a PC9 for my new cheaper truck gun.

I have an HK SP5 chambered in .22LR, suppressed. I also have an HK .22LR with a 16-inch barrel. They are both very good weapons, especially when suppressed.

When I think of small caliber, quiet and light, I think of the MK22 “Hush Puppy” Snake uses in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. It’s a tranquilizer, but the character racks the slide to chamber a new round every time so he doesn’t create a sound signature by the slide recoiling. Since that game is about stealth.

"Hush-puppy" is a mod you can do on pretty much any 22 pistol. It's a reverse slide lock that keeps the action from cycling when you fire.
