My late father landed on sword beach, he was almost 20 years old, he, 3 of his brothers and his brother in law all signed up together, all came home, all together again.
My father sadly passed away 2020, he was a royal engineer, R force, attached to the guards armoured division, he was in the 2nd wave to land on sword beech. Miss you so much dad.🇬🇧
Sitting at Christmas dinner this evening, I brought up my Great Uncle who died in the war. He, my Grandfather and third Uncle were all deployed. My mom said he and my Grandfather were only 15 miles apart in France at one point. My other Uncle was in the Navy. My poor Great Grandmother had her three children fighting in the war. The sacrifices our families made is nothing but extraordinary.
My grandfather did this on juno beach 6th june 1944 at 18 years old.. Got ptsd , died in 1978 and was crouching in front of every windows in the house at the end. Thank you for you sacrifice grand pa.
My grandfather fought in Burma, he had some serious PTSD and he done some really strange things, he didn't even know he was doing it until I asked him what he was doing and why.

when you climb down that rope ladder from that safe ship 2 miles from shore into a little boat and head towards nazi machine guns on that beach, you are the bravest guy in the world in my opinion, and deserve the gratitude of the entire free world. You are probably 19-21 years old. We will thank you guys forever. We will never forget.
I am almost 60 and lived a life of prosperity because these men, and my father. I will always be humbled by those who sacrificed everything just so I could receive the opportunity freedom gives. I can't help but wonder why I became the beneficiary of the sacrifices of these true heroes - and everyone who fought for our freedom - both men and women. My Father was more of a man than I can ever hope to be - I can only keep trying to be a small part of that man to my family - Thats the gift he gave me and the very least I can do is try to pass some of his spirit to them. I hope to sit with his spirit again.
My children will learn freedom is not free its paid for in scarfice and blood. As a ex infantry soldier whos been on tours around the world. Im in complete respect for this generation. Just wish i could of spoken to my grandad and tell him how proud i was of him. Less we for get.

My grandfather was part of the Canadian Forces that landed at Juno Beach. He fought up through Belgium and The Netherlands and thankfully survived. Well, physically at least -- he was quite messed up mentally and emotionally when he returned home, what we would now call PTSD. He and every other Allied soldier who fought in this terrible war deserve our deepest gratitude and eternal memory!

Great to think they fought along side each other now their decendents are strangers to each other scattered around the world. My grandad died 2year ago aged 99 1/2 he landed on sword beach, the stories he's told me are amazing and Iam so proud of him of what he did and everyone else who served for us, he was looking forward for his 100th birthday and the letter of the queen but he never made it. The Royal British legion done a lovely send of for him at his funeral. God bless all who served past and present.
This video was not just Sword Beach but Juno also . It started at Juno and showed the Canadian landing . Then showed the Canadians penetrating inland , Then showed The British Landing , then finially the French .
In the US we often referred to that generation as our “ greatest generation “. I am convinced every man who fought in that war were from the greatest generation their country had to offer. The storming of those beaches knowing the cost would be high and much higher if they didn’t, is beyond imagination. The Germans too, staying dug in while shells from battleships and planes pummeled their fortifications is to be noted as well.

Every member of youth today needs to see footage of WW1 and WW2 operation overlord to see the very freedom our heroes secured for us today. And it's absolutely sad that even if they did watch it, they wouldn't even care and still continue to be defiant. But know this heroes, I and people of my generation will forever be grateful and you will always be honoured. I have served 2 tours myself in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's a total disgrace, what Europe has become with the Moo Slims taking over. My Grandfather was given special dispensation to come back from The Front, to kiss goodbye; his dying wife and unborn son on 04/06/044....... then had to get straight back to Portsmouth for the landings. I have no idea how anyone could feel, having to do that. Thankfully I am here to tell this story as my grandmother and father survived.....so did my Grandfather..... P W TAIT

Today's generation feels happy on reading french liberation from Germans by allied forces. but it all Started with Normandy. Imagine you are landing at the shore and at some high level, some Germans are sitting with machine guns . Those soldiers who survived and those got killed, did the beavest act in the history of war , cuz the allied knew they are going deal with almost death .
My father went in at H hour before the main landings. British Airborne, supporting the Guys who landed at Pegasus bridge. He fought against SS troops, hand to hand fighting at times. He best was shot in the head right next to him. My father survived, and his troop were eventually relived by the main force. He then along with others were be sent back to the beach for some rest, when the lorry hit a mine, all killed except my father who came to in a field his clothes ripped to shreds, then passed and came to in a hospital in Glasgow! My father ended the war fighting the japs in Burma behind enemy lines. As he was shipped out there after his recovery. He suffered from malaria after, he ended up in his last few years with dementia and kept talking about Burma. Much respect to those who served in ww2 and all conflicts after. I served in the RN, (Falklands).

I'd give a thousand pound just to know what that man was thinking at that moment in time, was it his mum&dad, his wife and kids, his lover, his brothers in arms, his ancestors who've gone before or his villiage, town or city in his homeland!! wondering and hopeing he'll see once more..its a Very moving image..

My father was in the Navy and 19 on D-Day his ship landed mixed elements of Lord Lovat's scouts and Royal Marine commands.

My Dad was in the 1st wave on Sword Queen White with the 1st Bn The South Lancashire Regiment, he was 18 and had his 19th birthday on the 16th June
