Sitting at Christmas dinner this evening, I brought up my Great Uncle who died in the war. He, my Grandfather and third Uncle were all deployed. My mom said he and my Grandfather were only 15 miles apart in France at one point. My other Uncle was in the Navy. My poor Great Grandmother had her three children fighting in the war. The sacrifices our families made is nothing but extraordinary.

I can't help but wonder why I became the beneficiary of the sacrifices of these true heroes - and everyone who fought for our freedom - both men and women. My Father was more of a man than I can ever hope to be - I can only keep trying to be a small part of that man to my family - Thats the gift he gave me and the very least I can do is try to pass some of his spirit to them. I hope to sit with his spirit again.

In the US we often referred to that generation as our “ greatest generation “. I am convinced every man who fought in that war were from the greatest generation their country had to offer. The storming of those beaches knowing the cost would be high and much higher if they didn’t, is beyond imagination. The Germans too, staying dug in while shells from battleships and planes pummeled their fortifications is to be noted as well.

Every member of youth today needs to see footage of WW1 and WW2 operation overlord to see the very freedom our heroes secured for us today. And it's absolutely sad that even if they did watch it, they wouldn't even care and still continue to be defiant. But know this heroes, I and people of my generation will forever be grateful and you will always be honoured. I have served 2 tours myself in Iraq and Afghanistan. He best was shot in the head right next to him. My father survived, and his troop were eventually relived by the main force. He then along with others were be sent back to the beach for some rest, when the lorry hit a mine, all killed except my father who came to in a field his clothes ripped to shreds, then passed and came to in a hospital in Glasgow! My father ended the war fighting the japs in Burma behind enemy lines. As he was shipped out there after his recovery. He suffered from malaria after, he ended up in his last few years with dementia and kept talking about Burma. Much respect to those who served in ww2 and all conflicts after.
