Ballon d'Or (arbitrary forward award) don't mean shit and titles (Argentina>Portugal many times over in terms of population) don't mean shit if we're talking the individually best player. Also the team doesn't matter if we're talking individual skills. Can't stand Manchester United but am with Ferguson on this one (despite being a casual barca fan). Prime CR could be put into ANY team in the world. Messi won't win air duels (yes size matters). He can't solo EVERY run. CR could score from far out with both feet AND be an aerial threat. Yes Messi could make great assists but then it's up to inferior players to read those passes and capitalize on them... Individually prime CR>prime Messi in terms of effectiveness. If you had a blank check and could only pick ONE for your hometown team, unless your hometown happens to be Barcelona or maybe Bayern under Pep, you'd be stupid to not pick prime Ronaldo. That being said Messi, with the close control in tight spaces, is more fun to watch. My humble opinion.
Edit: but also in my opinion the best player ever award would go to a midfielder, like Cruyff or Xavi, over any forward.
