NOTE FOR ANY DM’s playing with new players:
This adventure is incredible for new players. However, there’s one thing that you might want to look out for.
When I ran the adventure, each player character found a different quest-giver, and the entire party split. I would recommend finding a way to keep the party together- like the quest-givers saying that their missions are for only for a full team of adventurers.
Other than that, my best advice for the module is to make it your own and don’t be afraid to modify it!
We completed this adventure last week- it’s really fun and I recommend it to everyone!

      @alarin612 5 лет назад +1

Good advice, mate! I loved running this, as well. I found some success by, when the players were pulled in two directions, having some townsfolk step up to take on one quest while the heroes took the other.
... the townsfolk then may or may not have ended up as hostages on the next adventure, but at least it keeps the pacing, right?

I'm going to play this module with my players in w few weeks. I just received it. I've been playing D&D for 40 years. I had played for over 10 years in the Forgotten Realms, which is why I have not played in it since like the late 90s. This is going to be a return to that lore, of which most has been lost to the ages (50 years of ages:). Thanks for the refresher.

Just ran the first section of the campaign with my three kids this evening.
Was expecting to get through it in 1 hour- 1.5 hours, 3 and a half hours later...
Best/worst, my 12 year older daughter, if I killed one of the members of our party and no one caught me, would I be able to collect their payment if I told the people in town they really wanted me to have it (she is playing a Chaotic Neutral Rogue despite me trying to discourage her).

Don't worry, I started DMing it for my wife and friends last October and we're still going. They've almost finished in Phandalin itself after all this time, but considering I saw a D&D dev team game that spent just as much time stuck in the first cave I learned to relax about the pacing xD

Great video, especially for new DMs, but some ideas for experienced DMs also.
I ran LMoP as the intro to Storm King's Thunder instead of using the SKT intro chapter. SPOILERS FOR SKT FOLLOW:
I had it that the Forge of Spells was actually one of the missing pieces of the Vonindod being sought by the fire giants. Nezznar the Black Spider was hired by a collector (actually leader of a new thieves guild in Neverwinter) to retrieve the forge so the guild could make magical weapons to sell to Lord Neverember. The PCs decided to work with Nezznar for part of the payment, and helped him retrieve the forge and take it to the surface. Nezznar wanted them to take it to Triboar to meet his contact for the handoff, but the PVs wanted to go to Thundertree instead, so Nezznar hired someone else to take it. Eventually when the PCs made it to Triboar, they discovered the fire giants had already attacked the town and stolen the Forge of Spells (instead of the vonindod piece under the campground as written). The PCs now have to go to Ironslag to get back the Forge of Spells so everyone can get paid, and stop the firegiants from rebuilding the vonindod in the process.

I was briefly a player in a...less-than-successful campaign attempt on Roll20 that used this module. Having read through it recently with the intent to run it myself (to ease my way back into 5E and teach some new players the game), I realize now why that campaign failed: the DM skipped nearly all of the NPC interactions that made Phandalin feel alive, and none of us cared about the Redbrands as a result. I'll be sure to lightly nudge players toward tying their characters in with at least one faction or character involved in the adventure.
Oh, and this is my first time watching one of your videos, but I intend to go through a great deal of them now to help learn this setting. Thanks for providing such a wealth of useful content!

This is actually the booklet I used when I started Dm'ing many years ago. I've run through it three times with groups so far.
I have yet to have anybody use one of the pre-genned characters though.
As a fledgling DM I always wanted to create my own setting anyway, so the fact that not much info was given on the forgotten realms was kind of alright for me in the long run, however I can't definitely say for sure if you're not planning on creating a whole setting of your own, this is so helpful. My first time running this campaign with my friends was so haphazard. Afterwards however I basically reworked the whole booklet into my own setting.
Spoilers: Just as an FYI for new DM's, one thing I do have to say about a specific point in the book is the fight with the green dragon. You absolutely have to hold back on your players, that dragon can very easily kill your players in just a few turns. The book says to have the dragon retreat when it gets to half (possibly a third) of it's health, but I feel that's still just way too much time for the dragon to cause a TPK. (I actually substituted the whole dragon encounter into a plot point encounter that tied in the dormant volcano. (meaning I also had to change the dragon worshippers.) Just go easy on your players for that fight, if they're new players, they won't even realize that you're holding back cause the dragon is still VERY powerful.

I've been having a lot of fun DMing this particular adventure. Even though it's meant to be short, I've somehow turned it into a 30+ session adventure with ties to many of the other published adventures via adventure hooks in-game. My players especially seemed to love the Venomfang fight and have even befriended Droop the goblin from the first dungeon, who is tagging along for the ride as a zany Expert class sidekick (from Unearthed Arcana). Thanks for the video!

This video is great. The Lost Mine of Phandelver is really everything you need to start playing in the Forgotten Realms world.
At the same time, (and what I'm going to say is only about me) I feel a bit "stuck" in the over-exploited universe of FR, especially on the Sword Coast areas.
I had a lot of hope in the "Nentir Vale" campaigns setting, because it was a fresh new start and give DM more liberty, but unfortunately this universe did not manage to compete with the charms of the FR setting.

LMoP was my first 5e Adventure. I had played D&D about ten years before and was kind of unsure about potentially slowing down the others because I was so rusty - as it turned out, everyone else in the party was fairly new to D&D. I did not play one of the pre-made chars, but DM and me found some nice tie-ins for my bard and as it turned out, 5e was not so scary after all :) So yeah, this adventure is also nice if you want to come back to D&D, it was great fun. It was really interesting to catch back up with the lore, like "Whaaat?! All that has happened while I was away?" I imagine that's what people in the Realms feel like after they've been magically imprisoned for a while :)

Amazing & Essential #TheLoreYouKnow brief and concise guide on how to run #LostMineofPhandelver, Jorphdan!! It resonates with many aspiring but intimidated DMs who have the Starter Set to eventually run but are at a loss as to how to actually begin and convey the lore information(!!) to new players without being awkwardly "meta" in the sense of what players should or shouldn't know to enjoy the game with fresh eyes yet have an engaging world investment in the lore! It's very much left to the DMs to problem solve this and your guide does so wonderfully! The echo wave, the dwarven statue, Hotenow, Phandalin's history itself!
As with your other video on the goblins with the tank, it allows future DMs to visualize running or even build encounters and to get out of their heads and into the game and not be too into the details or attempt to juggle things in their mind too much of how to and where and when and so forth and " everything must be perfect" and never start!
Looking forward to More #The LoreYouKnow Kudos!!

We just finished playing this, like an hour ago hahahah
It was totally fun, 2 tieflings (a fighter and a wizard) a dragonborn barbarian, a human ranger and a dwarf cleric of St. Cuthbert.
At the end, we killed the Black Spider and my dwarf cleric used the staff of spiders to gain control of the bugbears there so we could rebuild the ruins in the name of St. Cuthbert

I DMed MoP for my wife and a friend as a birthday present. And since there where only two player we had to improvise.
Each player had one main character and an additional one or two, which could change in the course of the game. Suddenly NPCs became PCs (the two children held captive (the boy becoming a ranger (always striding the woods), the girl becoming a sorceress (awakened by the traumatic events)), and even the goblin bullied by the hobgoblins was a rogue with "taker-qualities").
I didn't use the pregenerated characters or factions from start (but the main characters mentors sending them were members). They should be in touch with their characters, so create them themselves, but it would have been a good option for the secondary ones.
The factions I used as feedback for their behaviour. Only if the PC acted in accordance of a faction, the respective member would approach them and offer them a membership (or in case of the Zhentarim and the Waukeens priest "an offer he cannot refuse").

Very good for background & setting lore. It will help make this world more real for players & DMs. I have this starter adventure & will be DMing it for the first time this week. Never played D&D 5e before but have done lot of other RPGs. What do people recommend as a follow up to LMoP from the official D&D5e adventures?

Awesome video! Phandelver was the first module I played, but now I'd love to revisit it as the DM :D And now I'm wondering whether it would make sense to keep race, goals & backstory for the pregen characters, but allow players to switch out the classes (if they don't like the chosen ones), since that shouldn't impact the story...

Hi Jorphdan. The thing that no videos (your or otherwise) address are the lore tie-ins for the answers the banshee Agatha provides and the other lore tie-ins in other sections. There's so much in the way of lore tie-ins provided, but you are left wondering what becomes of Sister Garaele or the Thayan sorcerer and how this relates to the questions and answers they received. There are a bunch of these that I have forgotten from Lost Mines of Phandelver, but it would be so good to hear what logical minds would say on these mysteries. It would be very greatly appreciated if such information is available. Also, I know the Icespire Peak series continues the local adventures, but I don't think it continues these storylines. It would be great to know what Wizard had planned or plans to do surrounding these little mysteries. (I have my own alternate mysteries which relate to the dungeon B1 being at the back of the cave in Goblin Arrows, and a whole different world beyond, but to integrate well into the forgotten realms, it would be awesome if those tie-ins led to other whole adventures (thinking Dead in Thay or Dragon Hoard for the Dragon Cultist tie-in or IDK what for the Harpers tie-in or the Xentarim purpose in the area or the Lords Alliance). Anyway, lore assistance for the threads provided in Lost Mines of Phandelin or Icespire Peak would be greatly appreciated.

    • @Jorphdan

From the starter set here: "Page 30-31 of Lost Mine of Phandelver describe the eruption of Mount Hotenow (1451 DR) as occurring 30 years ago."
However this doesn't add up you are correct. So many believe it occurred later on in 1489, or even 1491. This would put it later than other adventures as Tyranny of Dragons seems to have occurred either 1486 or 1489.

    • @JustinTotino
      @JustinTotino 5 лет назад +1

Indeed, the 5e timeline has always been murky because they want DMs and players to integrate the adventures in their homebrew worlds and not worry too much about the timeline.
      - LMoP mentions Mount Hotenow erupting 30 years ago, which would be make LMoP take place in 1481 DR.
      - Due to Adventurer's League, we know that Hoard of the Dragon Queen takes place in 1489 DR. The hardcover book, however, says that the eruption occurred "a century ago" (in Episode 5: Construction Ahead), which would be make it take place in 1551 DR.
      - We know Princes of the Apocalypse takes place in 1491 DR, because the hardcover says so. The hardcover also states that Mount Hotenow erupted "nearly 50 years ago", which makes the eruption take place in around/a little after 1441 DR.
So it all gets kind of muddled. Since we know for a fact that the eruption was 1451 DR and LMoP includes the Cult of the Dragon trying to gain favour with Thundertree's young green dragon, I would suspect that the adventure actually takes place somewhere between 1485 DR - 1489 DR so as to tie into HotDQ better.
