Hillclimbing is INSANE, Look at this - [turbo noises] - it’s a homemade, 1000 horsepower, turbocharged, lightweight rocket ship. And it’s what Hill Climb Racing is all about.
Engineers building incredible machines, in their sheds - without corporate backing and SENDING IT up a hill - all to see who’s fastest.
And what’s better - is that there are almost NO RULES. So engineers can get as crazy as they like - so we’re going to go over our ten favourite hill climb cars - and tell you why they are awesome.
Hill climbing happens all over the world on stages like Prescott Hill in England which is less than a mile, to places like Pikes Peak, which is over 12 and finishes in the clouds at over 14,000 feet above sea level.
The tight corners, acceleration zones and incline means that the power-to-weight ratio and downforce are key. Expect cars with multiple turbos and MASSIVE wings to give them the boost and agility to set a good time.
This means that Hill Climbing creates some of the craziest-looking and most powerful cars in the world.

What happens when you let engineers have completely free reign? No regulations, no power limits and whatever mad aero design they can come up with.
Well, you get crazy-powerful, high-downforce - monsters.
This is exactly what they do in the Unlimited Division at Pikes Peak, where we get to see how they stack up against each other, as well as how it can go wrong.
Home-designed and made machines can compete against big-money international car companies to race to the top of the 14,000-foot mountain. A course with no run-off, no barriers, standard road-tarmac and 2000 foot drops.
#HillClimb #PikesPeak #Racecar
I love that the organizers for Pikes Peak have embraced the no rules type of attitude which has encouraged a huge variety of builds and strategies to get up the mountain. The cars have just gotten wilder and wilder over the years and they've embraced that instead of stomping out the creativeness. It's brilliant.
Such a breath of fresh air, when compared to the FIA controlled race classes.
F1 take notes
@@Im_JLC its called "formula" 1 for a reason
What rules do exist? I assume it's all around safety?
@@Im_JLC F1 would fold within 36 months if it took this approach. I mean I'd love to see it but this sport can't hold the lid down with all the rules it has.
With the greatest respect Georg Plasa’s Judd BMW e36 has to be the epitome of Hillclimbing. He engineered the car himself and drive it to numerous European wins until his unfortunate death. An absolutely iconic car.
True. And the Jud engine cars overall are amazing. love the slk and 4c with it. legendary sound
That Judd sound makes me weak at the knees
Some honorable mentions: Audi Quattro S1 E2 Pikes Peak (the 1987 Pikes Peak winner at the hands of Walter Rohrl), Peugeot 405 T16 (winner of Pikes Peak in 1988 and 1989 with Ari Vatanen and Robby Unser respectively), the crazy Escudo we all know from Gran Turismo games, Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak (875 bhp to 875 kg of weight, smashing the record at Pikes Peak in 2013 with Seb Loeb at the wheel and still holds the record for petrol powered cars) and the crazy Volkswagen I.D. R. (electric, but blisteringly fast).
Nobuhiro Tajima drove that Suzuki Escudo, also I like to mension the Rod Millen's Toyota Celica and Tacoma with Penzzoil Livery
Oh God, pikes is the perfect venue for a Tesla model y.
I think Randy Pobst put a Model 3 over the side a few years back
Man I still remember getting the Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak (XL7) in Gran Turismo 2. It was absolutely insane, and my 10 year old self couldnt even control it properly with just a PS2 controller
Brings back memories. That game is responsible for my love for cars. I loved using that car in the game though. It was literally unbeatable when properly tuned.
Also...pretty sure it was PS1 lol
@@RaneBoDasch oh right PS1
Cant forget the Viper. Went sideways all day with that one.
@@mr.anderson4755 I was sideways in every rear wheel drive car. Thank god for the evo and skyline
Also remember that, just ride the wall bro
You should have mentioned the Freightliner Truck which also participated in this race .
So underrated in motorsports I love attending my local track Shelsley Walsh, always a good show
Personally i think the way to go for pikes peak is electric. It has zero power lose due to the thinner air. You get the same power at the top as you do at the base. Since no rules you can have traction control to reduce wheel spin and you also have instant power that can be added or removed from the wheels that slip individually. I think the setup would be fully carbon fiber, lightweight carbon tub, moving ground effect skirts and active suspension, full traction control, and maybe a medium size wing. Powertrain would be 4 individual motors driving all 4 wheels.
Why are there so many redone videos lately? And with miles now instead of km?
My favourite Hill Climb Car was a TZ 750 powered open wheeler I saw run at Collingrove in South Australia.
#funfact I used to work with Nobby for his hillclimb exploits here in Australia. Lovely man.
I wanna see two 6BTs in a V12 configuration with quad turbo, and a massive supercharger. Call it the 12 BT.
Driver61, I think at 9:30 you meant to say "Ford 417 stroker" instead of what you said which is "Ford 417, 2 stroke". AFAIK, Ford never made a 2 stroke engine and that sound sure isn't a 2 stroke.
Hill Climbing is my fav. Thank you!
Thanks for featuring Old Smokey F1!
0:13 & 7:05 That Camaro is badass! Why do Brits have a hard time saying "CAM + ARROW"?
there are like 50 different british accents some of them say it right
You mean in the same way Americans have a hard time saying Gloucestershire?
@@alicantino59 I don’t even try saying that word. Reading it hurts.
@@Yom_Bristol I heard about half of them and most of the time I use CC to help. I couldn’t help myself. Driver61 is great as he is.
My all time favorite Pikes Peak vehicle is the BOTT X1 2006 Buell XBRR with modified BOTT frame, and carbon fiber fairings.
I wonder if you have heard of Dean Tighe in Brisbane, Australia. He races a 1984 D'Allara F1 car. He rebuilt the Hart engine taking it from 3 to 4 litres for more torque. His business is Ivan Tighe Engineering, a world leading camshaft manufacturer. He wins everything in this part of the world.
Great things can be done when you're not hampered by the FIA
Also check out Pennsylvania Hillclimb Association and Appalachian Hillclimb Series events.
4:38 Got to see this GTR in person last year, it's insane!
Mad man had the door opening in the rs200 😂
The Dallenbach special was an awesome car and it was great fun to drive in the dirt 2 video game
Bill Newton: I'LL TAKE YOYR ENTIRE STOCK!
I would love for someone to make a modern Fiat 500 abarth and strapping in 2 X Triple rotary engines into it to produce a 4WD monster.
It'ld be MEGA!
To be honest. I’ve watched a lot of racing. I really enjoy hill climb, and auto cross. Not that I have the skill for the hill climb or the funding. But I can afford auto cross but still get the thrills where time is the opponent. This just reminds me to build a car and get started. Have have lots of fun.
2 front wings, this "stealthy" nissan GTR, yep definitely stealthy
My favorite and most iconic Pike's peak vehicle must be the 2007 Suzuki XL-7.
Shout out to that crazy black Gtr from South Africa 🔥🔥💯
Much better than F1 where rule makers force engineers to make car slow.
hey, congratulations on one million subscribers, I'm just noticing!
I saw this thumbnail a few times before I realised it wasn't the "Pikes Peak: Racing with no rules video" from 2 years back. I only mention it because I watch all your vids and nearly skipped this one unintentionally! (Even the angle of the photo was the same as I remembered)
Sir I know you can say "pop". It is funny that captions says "poop". 😂
also check TIME ATTACK very similar but held on tracks
I was kind'a expecting a mention to the VW id.r I think it's the record holder in Pikes Peak. By the way, nobody ever tried to to race an F1 to Pikes Peak?
Haven't you already done a Video on this? 2 years ago? Looks kinda same title
How is the electric hill climber not on this list? 100% innovation.
Yeah I like the truck it just looks happy doing what it does
Great video. One feedback: a tonne/ton is a very confusing unit to use on an international video.
I really hope Ken block makes it back to pike’s peak this year.
wait haven’t i already seen this video?
How does one get involved with a team…I’ll bring drinks to everyone and clean up I don’t care but I want to get involved😂
I can’t find anything on the engine on that 2013 ford open buggy wheel being an actual 2 stroke as stated in the video
Same. Maybe it was a Detroit diesel or something? Maybe a heavily modded 1000c snowmobile engine on methanol or something? Even then that's only 400hp at best... I'm thinking this guy misspoke.
Nice to see Liam again. Saw him race at X-Games Munich RX.
Where’s the Hoonipigasus? (Ik it couldn’t run but still…)
Just give me the HCR finger screw fully upgraded and unlimited fuel and I will go anywhere and climb any mountain, just do not put a time to it but I will eventually get there...
9:30 i dont think this thing is a 2 stroke
Why is no one having active aero or suspansion???
R.i.p Ken I saw your car at the start. Of course this guy didn't
Electric cars are not in the same category as fossil fuel cars.
Just like a magnetic train is not the same as an electric train, which holds the record in Japan.
🔥🔥🔥
So you mean i can V12 swap a saleen S7 and thats okay for hill climbin?
Is F1 driver Nigel Mansell your relative? 😊😊😊
Joining two busa engines together may have made sense at a time... but these days you can get an aluminum block LS of any cubic inch derivative you'd like, still coming in just as lightweight as the twin custom, one off, uber expensive dual busa, if not lighter... Then you'd not only NOT have to invest in the one off'ness of the ridiculous engine currently in use, but everything from parts to the aftermarket everything; from tuning to expertise, would be readily on tap worldwide. But whatever... none of these people are going for anything remotely sensible, lol. Thing is though, you wouldn't be stuck running the revs way out just to tap into 350 pathetic pony powers... as even a small turbo on a basic junkyard LS... would make for anything from an easy 700-1000+ HP.... and SO MUCH more torque... and it'd all be available well under 7K. . . RPM that is.... Which is desirable, in case for some reason anyone thinks revving out to 2-stroke bike rev ranges is somehow better... it isn't. Having to rev something out just to find the powerband is a major negative / con.... not a pro.
ruclips.net/video/R4GwaPkKzQs/видео.html
How about that time at Pikes Peak back in 1995 when a crazy dude named David Donner raced with an Indycar? A Lola T91/00 to be more precise, with massive wings and a sorta of a primordial HALO. It's so damn wrong and cursed to see that is beautiful!
There's only 1 rule, stay on the track!
And don't crash
It's more of a guideline than a rule... 😉
They are bonkers
It'snt mandatory
Nuff' said
should've mentioned the Freightliner Cascadia hill climb truck... that thing is simply insane
And the fan car
why remake the old video
Same title, new content....
Shame you didn't include the all too often overlooked, lower classes of hillclimbing. There are roadgoing production car classes, meaning you can go racing on a very small budget too. Minimal safety mods and racewear and you can compete in a car you drove to the hill. I know you briefly included Prescott and Shelsley Walsh but British and European hillclimb championships, have some incredible cars too that do have to comply with regulations but still put on a great spectacle.
I agree. To me, EA888 VW blocks with all sorts of bike heads, with all sorts of modified displacements and fitted into all sorts of chassis are much more interesting than some of these Pikes Peak machines, simply because they're engineered to work and last a whole season of races instead of a single annual one like the latter. Not to mention some "freak" builds like an Opel Kadett with an LT5 engine. 🙂
Not sure if still running it but there's plenty of less-than-loon hardware at Pikes Peak have acquaintance who ran a buggy with a 3-liter Yamaha Ford motor.
These types of open races are the absolute best, most entertaining races imo. No rules means everyone is open to experiment and try to get as nutty as they can, all kinds of set ups, all kinds of cars and bodies, nobody the same, that's exciting to me.
And omg I love the RS200, always have, always will, just an absolute miniature demon.
I think the thing that gets over looked is that it produces drivers that naturally adapt to the strengths and weaknesses of the vehicles far more readily then what we see in more restrictive races like F1 or Nascar where everyone is using a cookie cutter car and thus the variance between cars and tactics is much smaller.
The car I was most excited about since it's reveal was the hoonipegasus, that crazy Porsche on the hands of Ken would definitely have taken lots of trophies home and one the craziest gymkhana videos ever, looking back Ken left one of the best in the hands of the next generation R.I.P
Cant wait to see the Hoonipig go up PP with anyone at the wheel 43 4ever
I can only imagine a PT Cruiser being used for hill climbs, specifically a red one.
I was at Pikes Peak in 2011 when Monster broke the 10 minute barrier for the 1st time ( also the last time with dirt sections), it pretty cool to see, he was so much faster than anything else. But can someone tell me what a Ford 2 stroke engine is, because I've never heard of one?
What happened with last years F1 competition held by you?
I've literally looked at the rule book and the entry for unlimited class is like 1 sentence... Basically says "must comply with all safety standards as outlined on page 4" and then it's on to the next class with 6 pages of rules 😂😂😂😂
Sooo helicopters are allowed
Rules
1-go fast
2-no dying.dying will get you disqualified
Just driving up Pikes Peak can be terrifying. Those guys are on the knife edge separating brave from crazy! But it sure is fun to watch.
Yah. This and Isle of Man TT are the pinnacle of motorsport. F1 is for pussies. XD
though not directly made for hill climbing, the hoonicorn will always be my favorite HCmonster.
that massive drift at the bare edge of the curve.. an amazing shot, chef's kiss.
also, the man the myth, the absolute legend of ken block behind the wheel.
Dude when they debuted the Hoonitruck on Mt. Fuji... Absolutely Epic
Rhys millen drove drift hyundai and won.
@@shhhdontshout rhys is a legend on his own right but he isnt ken block. this post is about ken block.
RIP Ken Block. May he be lighting up tires in heaven right now.
How was it a Hillclimb monster? It never competed at a Hillclimb.
The incredible variety make me wish for a F1 level open wheel racing series, with the only rule making sure the designs guaranty the safety of the drivers and see with what ideas the engineers can come up with
I've said that for years. Specify the safety cell, fuel (and quantity maybe), tyres and budget everything else, go for it. If they want to spend all their money on aero or engine and neglect the other fine. If they want to use what they already have and refine it, no problem. They want to throw all their engine away and move to turbine powered hybrid, sure. If they can do it within budget it's legal.
@@Firecul they even ban things that are legal because they "defy the spirit of the regulations", development-wise it's the most boring f1 has ever been
If it was all about what engineers could do, they would develop a car so quick the human body would not be able to handle the G-forces
@@ryanwhitlock7350 Nah. The human body can cope with alot. As long as they dont pull more than 8 gs, they should be fine. Thats what fighter pilots sustain on a regular basis.
Even series with rules like F1 can't guarantee safety.
Since there are no rules, just use a helicopter.
there are rules that prohibit that
How many Pike Peak list are you gonna make?
Driver61: YES
Imagine the "no rules" Porsche heading up Pike's Peak! That would be insane!
You mean the hoonigan Porsche
@@key2shawn154 No, he means the one that did the record Nurburgring lap, the modified LMP1 car.
There are some Finnish guys going around beating records with a 2000hp Porsche and wild aero as well. I can't remember the name unfortunately.
@@ondraspendlik9759 ooh okay
the 919 evo?
Wish you'd have brought up the Original 1996 Suzuki Escudo, That thing was an absolute animal.

The Driver : Ask me if i give a f***
If this is what 'normal' cars can do imagine F1 cars without rules and regulations Probably around 1250-1500 hp
Congrats on the 1M Scott!
you did not talk of the vw electric
The Buick in Paul Dalenbach"s car seems to be, if not the same, a very similar package to the one that Buick developed for Indy during the Stock block era. Just with a lot more boost.
You didn't mention the vw, which i beleive holds the record (at least that's what u said a few years ago)
Some cars may he faster, but that 500 will be the most fun 😃
Is there a record set for a down hill run on pikes peak?
I think that could present a whole new level of racing for these cars to tackle as everything is backwards including atmospheric density changes 😅
I almost think it could be something new in itself entirely
Yeah...Death race 2025. RIP Drivers!
i realy miss the two legendary Georg Plasa Creations (134 Judd and E36 Judd) as well as the the two Reto Meisel cars and the Hovemann Kadett. These are crazy machines.
it's not a fiat 500 "Puch," it's just a Puch 500 (a separate Austrian company that started out with bicycles and went on to become a motorbike manufacturer and produced their very own version of fiat 500s under Fiat's license. just saying.)
the Formula One car has less torque because it revs higher. it's that simple. (power is a product of torque times revolutions. if you really wanna know more than sheer power than it's how it's delivered across the band [forced induction vs naturally aspirated] and what's the gear ratios like. then you don't need to know torque at all. just saying.)
Scott, get yourself and the team over to Jersey in the summer to do the Boulez Bay Hill Climb. Would be good content to see you take on the hill.
I remember getting the suzuki hill climb car in Gran Turismo way back and that car would basically obliterate everything after I bought it. Good memories
Missed out the VW IDR, Peugeot 206 Pikes peak and the legendary Suzuki Escudo
You left out the EV Tesla driven by Randy Pobst. These cars have no elevation penalties. ✌😃
meh. if you would talk ev than the vw idr.
Damn, you know Scott's favorites better than he does?
For the sub-minute hillclimbs, you could get an AWD electric setup on a TINY battery.
Something like a modern Formla E car, with front axle drive enabled, rear brakes added and the 51 kWh battery reduced to 10 or 5 kWh, but more power. Something like the Koenigsegg Regera 700 hp battery upscaled or boosted. Replace crappy wheels with wide quali slicks, replace fake aero with real aero. BOOM, 600 kg, 900 hp, AWD car. Good for about a minute. tops :)
600 kg is too heavy believe it or not. To be competitive on the British hillclimbs, you need to be in the 400 kg region. I know of a company whose ultimate goal is exactly this. If they manage it, their cars should be bloody rapid.
@@Thee_Snow_Wolf There's always diverging crazier. Ever see Formula Student? Tiny but nippy. More wing than car. Not great with too long a straight or corner I guess.
Congratulations on 1 mil , you have been making 1 mil subscribers quality content for months now
I'm waiting for Scott to do a one off video about the fastest RC cars in the world. 208mph is the record at the moment.....
I've driven an RS200 on the test track at Ford's Development site at Dunton. A friend had been working on it, and thought I might be interested as I owned a Laverda Jota, which was the fastest road bike available at that time. This was a full rally spec car with 450HP. Initially, I was not terribly impressed, but when the big turbo kicked in, the car accelerated with a violence so intense, I was left wondering how anyone could possibly concentrate and think fast enough to control it through a Welsh rally stage with trees either side of the track waiting to kill you. Another friend moved from my section to Boreham where the RS200 was built. He told me interesting facts like the Kevla body panels had to be replaced event as they were abraded away by gravel spat at the panels by spinning tires.
The RS200’s are monsters. My dad has the EX Jan Arthur Iversen. It has 749HP and everything on it is retro.
I was wondering, with the aero setup and how low some of them are to the ground, do they also struggle with porpoising?
I don't think so, as most don't rely on underfloor downforce, which is what creates the problem
@@viewingchannel7929 ah thank you 🤗
My favorite hill climb car of all time, is Harald Mössler's Steyr - Puch BergSpyder, which uses the boxer from the Puch 500, or 650TR, with two 500cc cylinders. Search for it here on RUclips for many great videos of Harald blasting up hills all over Austria, Switzerland, Germany, and more! He's been driving it since the 1960's!
You only scratched the surface.
You also failed to include more EU machines for some reason.
Judd Mercedes SL, Karl Schagerl’s Mk2 Golf TFSI-R and the late great Georg Plasa and his Judd BMW to name a few.
And how about that insane blue Fiat X1/9 with Alfa power.
Ok. So I've had this issue with your video's for a while. You can't stick to a unit. You change from metric to imperial, the back every other measurement. You say the gtr weighs 1300 Kg, but then go on to say it has 1,118 hp per ton which is 2000 lbs. And it seems like every video I watch has things like this, where you go back and forth between units and systems and never give us a conversion. . So pick one and let us convert, or provide the conversions yourself. Plus you constantly switch units saying X amount of hp, with X amount of NM of torque. Those units don't go together. If you're going to use Hp, use lbft of torque, and if you are going to use Nm of torque, use kw of power. Pick a system and stick with it.
Thought the McMurtry would have got a mention, probably the most bonkers car to climb a hill.
@driver61 That Ford pikes peak car is no two-stroke, not sure where that came from. It is a V8, and probably does run Methanol, but it's not a 2-stroke.
I was hoping I'd see Old Smokey it's based out of my hometown.
There's so little information available on the Porsche 909 Bergspyder I wish you would have included it.
Sorry what was that about the Vahsholtz's car being a two stroke? I looked it up and couldn't find any reference for or against it being a two stroke. I'm not here to criticise, I genuinely wanna know what the deal is here.
