A really nice, subtly complex whisky with no color added, non-chill filtered, an age statement and at 45.3% ABV
This is exactly the kind of whisky we should all be buying and that the distilleries should be producing instead of the crap most of the distilleries are trying to convince us is a special edition or finished in some special cask.
Actual substance vs marketing. Imagine that. Cheers to Bunnahabhain for producing something that doesn't need hype and high priced marketing in order to sell it.
I always have this on hand. You get so much for it's price point. An amazing value here in the US.
Among the vast sea of whisky reviewers on RUclips your videos are always a breath of fresh air tempered with open mindedness, practicality, and an unusually sober assessment of not only the bottle you're reviewing but also the industry as a whole. After each purchase I always immediately pull up your channel in the hopes of watching you review of the same expression while I sip my first dram or two.
The amount of money you've cost me is astronomical yet I still love your channel dearly! Keep up the fantastic work.
Thanks again Ralfy. A great Re-Review. I always enjoy these types of reviews seeing that whisky does change over time and so do our taste. A well-rounded reminder of how time does change our experience of whiskies have had before.
Bunnahabhain 12yo is definitely a mainstay on my shelf. I haven't had a dram of this for a while and watching this review I pulled it off the shelf and poured myself a 'wee' dram.
Keep up the reviews, no matter if they are about rums or SMWs or bourbons or what have you.
乾杯!
Ralfy, my friend told me about Bunnahabien and said he loved it so I bought one and really do like it. Not much of a fan for Isley scotch but I am slowly changing my mind. Then you did this review. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge. I have learned so much.
Bunna was my first.. I will never forget that and will always cherish that moment! Bunna 18 is one of my favorite whiskies ever! Cheers Ralfy
had to re watch this...I have to say..This is easily in my top 3 favorites. its just really good scotch..especially considering here in the states, its around 55.00 a very good value.
Kelly,
What are your other 2 favorites that similar/beside Bunnahabhain 12, Nonchilled, No color added. Please advise. Thanks for info.
So agree,top 3 for me Bunnahabhain 12,Arran 10,Deanston 12
Just picked this up today! I loved it! Having lots of fun enjoying different scotches. Trying as many un chill filtered and natural colored representations. I am liking them all and enjoying their unique characters. Salud!
Really appreciate the reviews and general good vibes you give off Ralfy, I've only been enjoying the different experiences of scotch for about two years now and if it wasn't for you I would probably still be scoffing down Johnnie Walker Black! I had my first dram of Old Pulteney 12 last night and absolutely fell in love with it, I would never of tried it if it wasn't for the positive opinion you have of it, same with Bunnahabhain 12, it's a great dram. Cheers!
Just received a bottle of Bunnahabhain 12 year old as a gift so needed to get my bearings before opening. It might be a month or two before I open it and when I do I will toast the memory of your father introducing you to this one. I can't wait but we are in the chaos of moving, first to a temporary apartment as we wait for the builders to finish the construction of our new place. I don't want to be rushed or stressed out when I open this one, so once the smoke and dust of the move has cleared and I'm in a clam state of mind I'll pour a wee dram and relax. Take care, Ossie
. . . hope it works for you after all the moving-stuff is done !
Really impressed by your review, gonna buy me a bottle tomorrow.
Currently £28 a bottle in Waitrose until the 6th December, fill yer boots...really enjoy your guides, Ralfy, Happy Christmas and a fabulous New Year to you and yours, mate.
May be whisky of the year 2017? When is that video due? Looking forward for that one !!
One of my absolute, indisputable favourites!
Another fabolous review. Ralfy, you are such a likeable fellow, and with such an amazing knowlegde of the whisky industry. Keep going! Btw, just ordered a bottle of Bunnah 12 thanks to your comments.
Ah, Bunny how I adore that distillery.
One of the best single malts there is. A must buy i believe.
love your dedication and reviews of the companies that do whisky the right way. higher abv's and no color added with an age statement.
Enjoyed your review Ralfy! I bought a bottle last week and enjoyed a glass Very Much. I have question though; it is Very dark for a whisky that is listed as Uncolored. Is that the affect of the Sherry wood? If I remember correctly, GLENGOYNE 12 is also uncolored, but aged in Bourbon Barrels. Can you shed some light on the subject.
SLÁINTE MHAITH
Mike
P.S. Here are my Notes:
Bunnahabhain 12 y.o. Single Malt Islay Scottish Whisky
6/16/18
46% ABV, Non-Chill-Filtered and Uncolored
Aged in a mixture of Sherry, Bourbon and ex-Whisky??? Casks
Left bottle uncorked for 30 minutes to let it breathe
COLOR: Very Dark Mahogany with Legs running swiftly.
NOSE: Rich sweet grape with a bit of sharpness with other sweet fruit notes. Stewed raisins in later nosing
PALETTE: Boozy rich grape with light pepper on my tongue. The mouthfeel is medium. Sweet grape in my second mouthful with a drying plus the pepper. The mouth feel thickens as I swirl it with grape notes lingering
FINISH: Peppery and mouthwatering with a light grape note lingering.
With 2 drop of Poland Spring water
NOSE: Lighter Grape notes but still rich
PALETTE: Grape notes on arrival but there is a stronger dry sense with pepper mixed with a dry sense. Grape rises as I swirl with the dry sense in the background. The mouthfeel is still very pleasant
FINISH: Peppery going down with more drying. Pepper notes lightly on my tongue. Mouthwatering in the end.
I am really enjoying this glass. The mouthfeel and grape notes are very satisfying. I find it interesting how the dry note increases with 2 drops of water.
The bottle says it is UnColored, yet the color is the darkest I have seen for a 12 y.o. that is uncolored, in the extreme. High Quality first fill Sherry Casks?
Hello Ralfy from Southern California.
Just purchased this bottler here for 54.99 US based on your review along with many comments.
Your reviews are always very helpful.
I always whip out my handy and youtube ralfy right in the shoppe.
Will follow up when I open it.
Gave up libations for lent, Easter can't get here fast enough Lol...
Cheers!
. . . happy to help with the malt-moments !
Always a pleasure to join you Ralfy! I tried "The Kraken" black spiced rum, bottled at 47%, and found it to be interesting and good. The rum choices were not that good in my shops so I studied all the labels and took a chance. It was a nice change from whisky. I just finished a 13 year old Craigellachie and found it to be very good! Take care, Ossie
I’m sipping a wee dram non April 6, 2020 during this Corona Virus lockdown. It’s cold, gloomy and rainy, and I must ask “Why did you give this only an 88 rating?” As I sip this I say to myself “Damn, THIS is good!” I love this Whiskey. Complex, subtle smokiness with Sherry sweetness that keeps the smoke in check. Yes, a bit of citrus and oak. Ralfy, one day we need to see which Whisky you rate 95+ or ever a 100 rating. Personally, I would drink Bunnahabain any day over Lagavulin that I know you highly rate.
You mentioned looking out for independent bottlings of peated Bunnas. What about the distillery bottlings...the Ceòbanach and Toiteach? Would you recommend either of those?
the new bunnahabhain (called small batch distilled on the label) is NOT this bunnahabhain 12. goodbye to the old cask influence. goodbye to the rich older than 12 years taste. it went from slightly more spirited to extremely more spirited. lighter, brighter, fresher and with more citrus notes. still a fine whisky but a real disappointment to old salty malties like me. i miss the old bunnahabhain already. please review again ASAP, ralfy. love to all
trapper kcmo I'm incredibly disappointed that this is the case I have been recommending this malt to many but now hearing the change I'm quite disappointed
damn, so you would say that it's worth £31.50 now?
But they still make the 12.
did you read the original comment?
Time for a Bunnahabhain 12 review again. Tried my 2018 bottling last week and loved it; went out and bought another bottle. If bottle 2 repeats the experience it will become my goto 12 year. What is a better 12year sherry cask finished Scotch in that price category?
Super review Ralfy. Here's to more superb single malts reviews from this South African owned scotch whisky distillery.
Thanks for The review Ralfy. Good to see we are back reviewing whisky once more.
"Always a joy" indeed. Bunnahabhain 12 is my all times favorite drum.
In my opinion, a very underrated single malt.
Jim Sifferle Not by me, I love Bunnahabhain ☺️.. I would say it's more a case of being unknown or unrecognised rather underrated, those who do know it, rate it very very highly.
Few months ago I found one covered by heavy dust in big market, and for a silly little price. I love the hunt.
Currently my favorite single malt. The depth and balance is a truly lovely thing to experience. Bunnahabhain doesn't get the credit it deserves!
Such a quality malt this. Really should be the benchmark in quality, for all single malts to live up to. Coming from Lagavulin 16, this beats it hands down IMHO.
picked up a bottle and I am very impressed with the complicity.
I had a taste of this today at my local liquor store. I thought it was delightful. I purchased a bottle along with a bottle of Highland Park 12 and Glenmorangie Nector D'or. I'm looking forward to this weekend, no doubt.
How was that Highland Park 12 ?
Thank you Ralfy for introducing me to this single malt. I bought a bottle based on your previous review, and it was very enjoyable indeed. Just wanted to add that I got a hint of peat on the palate, which added to the overall complexity. Very nice.
Great whisky for the money. I'm on my 2nd bottle of it which my brother got me as a gift. first was bout due to Ralfys recommendation. I definitely could tell a difference between the 1st bottle and the newer bottling. the glass bottle had changed slightly and there is a slightly different end Finnish on it for me. Still very good though.
One of the first whiskys that I remember that I tried as an adult was a Laphroaig 10. And I also never looked back. I fell in love with peat.
I love this scotch. Always have it on hand.
love this whisky. my friend introduced me to it late 2014. I'd never heard of it before and buying this bottle I didn't enjoy it at first. but it's grown on me. and now it's a favourite and the bottle design is like nothing else.
Ralfy continues to show excellent taste by revealing he's not a fan of coriander (aka cilantro). Same here...
Talking of Woods Navy Rum: When I was a student I drank nigh on a full bottle one night. And I woke up...in the woods!
Howdy Ralfy,
I bought a bottle of Bunna 12 a couple months ago and have been really enjoying it. Thanks for the introduction... Cheers
+Scott Rower . . . happy to help with the malt-moments.
Nice video! Bunnahabhain is one of my favourites. It's difficult to find in Denmark though. Which whiskys would you compare it to, or recommend that are similar?
Thank you Ralfy, for turning me on to this whisky, I love my big phenolic Islays, but this has more of an elegance to it and has really taken me by surprise. I find especially interesting the black currant note on the finish :)
Hi Ralfy.! Nice to see a re-review of a very good entree level single malt.
I was wondering if you could address the rising prices of single malt whisky. I have noticed that in the last couple of years the prices of the entree level whiskies haven risen quite a bit. The price of Bunnahabbain 12 yo for example has risen by 10 euros here in The Netherlands since the last time you reviewed it.
+kubr1ck36 . . . I will discuss this soon.
Lagavulin and Ardbeg have gone up 15 pounds in the last few years
+ralfystuff Ralf, I'd sooner have a prolongued rant on the current trends & late transmutations taking place in the whisky industry rather than a review of a specific malt, or one accompanied by the presence of a generic, yet consistent blend. I am certain each malthead partaking to your congregation should approve of that. Just saying!
+kubr1ck36 Inflation...Tell Draghi to raise interest rates and stop printing euros by the billions and giving it all to the banks. Then prices on Scotch....And every damn thing else will stop going up.
ch .kuhn brexit
Just bought a bottle from Waitrose
.£36...looking forward to seeing how this one goes..another fantastic video and review
Ralfy, nice review as usual. Never had the 12 year but the 18 Bunnahabhain is my favorite. I just got back from Scotland. Went to Aberfeldy to visit the distillery. Great tour. Did not get their whisky though. I bought a bottle of 1993 Ben Nevis by Signatory at Luvians in St. Andrews. Cheers.
Always a fan of the stories you include in the review, and I think it was great the way you did the review at the beginning of the video
Looking forward to your re-review of Laphroaig 10. Just last night I had a side by side tasting of the 10 and 15 year old~ Lovely citrus and fruit notes in the 200th Anniversary 15 year old!
It's such a lovely whisky. I was on about it all last year about getting a bottle and managed to get this 12 year old as a present on my birthday. Got about a 1/4 of the bottle still left but its not going to last much longer! May have a look at the more mature Bunnahabhain's and compare them to this gem.
+SaltySAX . . . older is not necessarily better !
+ralfystuff I'm pretty new to all this so I take your word on that. Love the vids though Ralfy, I've learnt a hell of a lot from them and its only deepening my appreciation of whisky! :D
. . . happy to help with the malt-moments !
One of my all time favourites although I'm sad they no longer make Black Bottle the way they used too.
Like you said, honesty and integrity are such a huge thing now, whisky has become so expensive these days you need that honesty to know what you're buying.
Honestly, as far as 12 Y.O go, this is one is one of the better ones if not the best 12 Y.O I tasted so far (not including cask strength like the Springbank 12 Cask Strength which is better) and more so I feel that being natural colour, un-chill filtered and bottled at 46+%, bunnahabhain deserves to be supported. Simple as that.
I just bought two bottles for £28 at Waitrose!
Great deal for a great whisky.
It's rich, complex, develops, it is NOT harmonious... it is definitely a syncope and it is not refined but at the same time it is a well balanced syncope with intrinsic qualities that just want to grow and articulate themselves as soon as you add a little water and allow it to settle in a covered glass.
i'd write the tasting notes but there's too many of them.
For £28... I honestly don't know if you can do much better... it's just a great price for what you're getting.
Opened a bottle of this for the weekend. First impressions were of an obviously sherried whisky but I was surprised by the peat - more prominent than I expected but with a nicely balanced 'tang'. Little bit 'fresh' as the review says but a touch of water and we were in business. Reminded me of coastal Speyside whiskys like Benromach. Very enjoyable. I personally find whiskys that balance peat and sherry much to my palette. Sherry bombs don't really do it for me.
2683rd!
;^)
Ralfy,
I'd waited entirely too long to try Bunnahabhain and the 12 year old really punched all my buttons for mouth feel, palette, nose .... the whole shebang. This may have now moved into the "house dram" category. Best of all, here in the upper Midwest (Wisconsin) the price is in the sweet spot as well.
Now, on to Laphroig.
Thanks again!
£28 at Waitrose, currently . . . £28!
It would have been rude not to buy one!
£20 in Scottish Morrisons, I've just bought 4 at Meadowbank.
Bernard Bresslaw what..??? That’s amazing
Damn good price. I just paid $49.99 for it in the U.S.
@@Dicko125 www.hotukdeals.com/deals/bunnahabhain-12-year-old-single-malt-islay-whisky-20-in-morrisons-aberdeen-3049421
$59 U.S. + tax (7.25%) at Bevmo here in California. Still worth it And our Higher end Bourbons are still a bargain : )
I enjoyed the re-review. I always learn something. So many questions...
My bottle of Bunnahabhain 12 has sat for months with 1/3 remaining... while watching this review I poured a Dram. The briny-ness of this bottle was hard for me to deal with, I had help getting this bottle down to this level, introducing friends to Single Malts... Others agreed about the briny-ness. So this time a re-try and again the taste of shoreline and sea critters was almost too much.
Questions: Have you ever encountered a bottle where the briny taste was enough to be a slight negative? Is it possible you don't notice it as much because the Isle of Mann might have so much sea influence?
With 53 Single Malts in my collection, open for sampling, the Bunnahabhain 12 is the only one with the strong seashore brine. Thoughts?
+Raster . . . I've never had a problem with brine-notes, I always enjoy it.
I personally loved the briny notes it's a malt from Islay, it should have that influence from the sea
Thank you sir, for your recommendation. I bought a bottle after watching your video. Very tasty, excellent from the glass.
+ralfystuff
I'll admit at first, I thought you where a bit harsh on the distilleries using colorant and chill filtration,
But after a few years of buying scotch
I 100% agree with you
In fact I Only Buy Non Chilled Filtered no
Colorant added
Scotch
Cheers

Ralfy, would you consider Bunnahabhain 25-year-old worth a punt? It has been bugging me for a while, yet it is very expensive where I am. Thank you!
Ralfy, it's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Informative and sometimes amusing. I must ask a technical question though. Is there a preferred temperature for the water added to be at? Should it be chilled, room temperature, the same as the whisky? Understanding it may come down to preference, your opinion is welcome.
+Radioactiveslime . . . slightly below room temperature in hotter climates.
Nose (with water): soft vanilla, chocolate, mild sherry Mouth (with water): creamy, ginger, sherry, brown sugar, rosewater, pickled ginger, clove, cinnamon, caramel, chocolate, brine Mark: 88
Ralfy, you're looking great! Losin' some kilos
You need to try Old Grand Dad BIB. Tastes easily like it should be twice the price
Hey Ralfy please review 'Old Monk Very old Vatted XXX Rum'. Want to know your opinion about it.
Your old man introduced to this .. you are never going back with this I can tell !
Nice to see this as I am planning to purchase a bottle for my bar,
Ralfy have you tried Ardbeg Uigeadail lately? How has it held up over the past years?
Ralfy, I bought my first bottle of Irish Whiskey; Powers Gold Label because it has an ABV of 43.2%, is unchillfiltered and was reasonably priced. The label however doesn't state "natural colour" so my question is...can E150 be added to Irish whiskey? I know it can't be added to bourbon. Thanks in advance Ralfy!
+Monte & The Machine . . . It can be added to Irish whiskey no problem, and that happens ! Bourbon bottled outside the U.S. can have E150a colourant added.
Hey ralfy, I'm new to Scotch whisky but keen to learn. I've heard Bunnahabhain 12 isn't that peaty for an Islay whisky, how would you rate its peatiness compared to that of the peatier examples (Lagavulin etc)
+abasford1 . . . very little noticable peat, some traces but nothing compared to Lagavulin.
+abasford1 It's far less peaty in its standard versions (unless you get the heavily peated editions from the independent bottlers) than Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg, etc.
+abasford1 You can hardly spot any peat in Bunna 12. I never noticed any real peat through an entire bottle. I'd say on a scale of 0 to 10 it rates 0,5 to 1,0 on the peat level with lagavulin being 8.5 and laphroaig being 9.5. I hope this clears it up a bit for you (;
Hey Ralfy, do you have any thoughts on Glen Garioch Sherry Cast 15yo...its at 53,7%...sounds great doesnt it...
+John Wine *Cask
+John Wine . . . sound lovely, check out whiskybase for reviews !
Great review. Love Bunna! Curious: You aging anything in the barrel on the shelf?
+Brad Webb . . . barrels empty, it leaks !
+ralfystuff I have a barrel that looks to be the same size. Currently holding 2L of unaged, wheated mash from Buffalo Trace since Jan. 1. Gonna give it a taste on April Fools Day. It leaked at first, but some hot water and barrel wax and now it's tight. Cheers and keep up the good work!
...saved it for my drive this a.m. - thanks, Ralfy! I'll definitely be picking up one of these this year. I look forward to la-re-review of Laphroaig!
great to hear mate. Looking forward to that one 😉
hello Ralf, mister malty master maniac! hi from Greece, just wanted to pay my respect to your excellent work in this delicate field of art and joy of whiskey smell, taste and... (full of "spirit") philosophy of yours. cheers
+lemicaution . . . happy to help with the malt-moments !
watching in 2020... excellent review!
Dear Ralfy could you review the Bunnahabain Stiureadair 46.3%. Thank you.
This was the first single malt I tried, and boy could I not believe what I was drinking.
Ralfy: Rum used to be the most distilled spirit made in the early history of the American colonies and the early USA. After the Revolution though Rye whiskey took over followed by Corn which evolved into bourbon.
Many craft distillers here also make rum including our own Rock Town distillery who makes a pretty good aged rum to go along with their whiskey.
Great review of a great single malt! As someone said earlier in the comments, the Gordon & McPhail 8 yr is also very good at an even better price. I like that G&M isn't afraid to use an age statement less that 10. Ever tried that one Ralfy?
+Lloyd Braun . . . not tried that version yet !
+Lloyd Braun It's very good. Also, some excellent young ones from Berry's and the SMWS.
Back on sale at Waitrose for £28 a bottle.
Ever tried their Ceobanach? It is getting some very good reviews as being an oldschool style of peat whatever that may be. It is an age statement but it only states it in the small print description on the back of the box stating it's been matured for over 10 years
+Obviousz Although I have not had any other Bunnahabhain whiskies, so I cannot compare, I highly recommend Ceobanach.
Recently geeked in. Saving 🍁$ for decent Scotch weekly. Decided going to buy this. $89.95 at LCBO. Hearing so many good things. Especially from you.
how was it?
Ralfy why do you add water before tasting it the very first time? also..... how can you say it's mostly the same since the last time you didn't add water at first. wouldn't you prefer to drink it at the strength it was bottled?
. . . all review bottles are researched beforehand so I know the taste from experience when neat.
Ralfy is the best. Whiskies of all types, rum, fast bikes and orchids.....come on over so I can "write you in" as my choice for President. Ken from the Good Old US of A
One of my fav Islay drams by far (not bias at all) , I really get the chocolate, hazel and caramel most prominently myself and it just melts in the mouth. I've even had it on the rocks and it still tasted fantastic. In my opinion they are the dark horse of Islay. Is that a bottle of dark matter I spy there?
Edit: Yes it was I didnt wait till the end of the episode. Dark matter is to be tried I would recomend it at Xmas with some chocolate and I love the chemistary style presentation.
A hidden Gem. Hope it stays that way. @Ralfy, in the *spirit* of experimentation. Might I recommend a blend of 70% Bannahabhain 12 and 30% Ardbeg 10. They marry beautifully.
Ralf speaking of rums is Mount Gay XO still worth buying ?
+chrish12345 I bought one a couple of months back, and it is definetly one of the best rums I've ever had. Quite complex with superb balance (which is rare for rums). Can't compare it to the old version though since I've never had it. It's gotten a bit younger in terms of age-statement. Would recommend it personally.
ok thanks looks promising then
Wait...2010? That flew by fast, didn't it?
i dont know how malt mentions work, but i had this in mind: "okey dokey and hello you malt artichokes"
hi ralfy, excellent reviews! would you please review auchentoshan springwood? :)
This is one of my favorite! Very rich taste. I like also Ardbeg 10
Would like you to try the bunnahabhain stiuireadair, NAS, no coloring non chil filtered 46.3% available at Morrison's
I always come back to Bunna..👍🏼 lovely
And have a digital dram with Ralfty 😁

ths is watya can get w/Chv12 blendd w/ Teeling 46% unchilled Irish whiskey. (good price)
A marvelous symphony of flavour.
U wont b disappointd...giv it a whack Ralfy if u dare😁
Awesome. The review and the whisky. Enough said.
Ralfy, can a grain whiskey include malt or wud the b a malt blend? thnx
anyone??
+Radio Laboratory "Blended Malt" refers to a bottling that is a blend of single malts only. Examples would be Johnnie Walker Green Label and Spice Tree.
Hey Ralfy, Would love to see a review on Whistlepig Rye Whiskey. I tried it in a bar a few weeks ago and it's ridiculously good stuff. It is a bit expensive but if your feeling like splashing out a bit it's money well spent !
+HillaToppa 90'z . . . it is crazy-expensive where I am, $215 a bottle so NO WAY !
***** Yeah I can only get it from online retailers here in Aus.... $179 a bottle is the cheapest i've managed to find lol
Great review Ralfy, I'll be ordering this one in as soon as the ol' monopoly stocks it.
£25 in Waitrose right now. Well worth it!
it's worth buying 3 bottles for that price.
might be the best deal on any whisky i've ever seen.
unfortunately, when i went to waitrose they only had two bottles at the shop so i couldn't buy 3 ;-)
Back on sale at Waitrose. Just bought a bottle for £28
Welsh Toro A year later.. I was pleased to pay £34 first time I tried it..
It took a few glasses buy it has become one of my favourite whiskies ...
My first Islay and one of my first bottles ever bought. Funny enough I have a version bottled at 43% from a time where apparently comments on colouring and chill filtering on the bottle were of no concern to anyone. ;-)
HI. 'Just as good as when I last reviewed...' hmmm last time you gave it 91.
I bought a bottle of this, and all im getting is alcohol burn with some oak. Can it be a bad bottle? Nosing and tasting is 80% alcohol burn.
I just bought one bottle, two weeks ago, I was not impressed at first, but after giving it some time, I really love it. I can detect vanilla, honey, caramel, maybe some cinnamon and some waxiness, no peat at all. I really like it, and it also gets cloudy with water added :D I cannot detect the sea salt yet, maybe in the next weeks
