I have to say that I have always found Audrey to be an incredibly unlikeable character. Not necessarily before her marriage to Alf but very much so after. Completely wasting Alf's money, acting like a spoilt petulant kid when she didn't get her own way and totally selfish at the expense of her own family at times. I remember in 2010 she had a slanging match with Rita. Rita says "I had more respect for the marriage than you have. I knew Alfie adored you. I knew you loved him back but you loved his money more". Sums her up very well. She's a total contrast to Sue Nicholls who comes across as a very nice woman. I do think she plays the part very well but as I said, Audrey is not somebody I have really liked.
She was unbearable, I have no idea what Alf got out of being married to her. She was useless when he had the shop, but very efficient at spending the money it made. In this period there was so little in Audrey to mitigate her laziness and greed. She was rarely genuinely nice to Alf unless she wanted something, and ridiculed him with no regard to how it may have left him feeling. She was an ageing good time girl who spent her life in brief relationships with married men, relying on their supposed generosity until their wives found out or they went back to their wives and there was no one around to pay her rent. In earlier episodes, she'd go to stay with Gail or Elsie then. A total user with very few redeeming features. But her character changed a lot after she became a widow, then Alf got some appreciation he couldn't enjoy.
I can think of three of her worst moments. The first came in 1991 when Alf took Ivy on at the shop. She belittled Ivy when she did nothing wrong. Audrey blew money in a posh hotel out of spite and more than likely caused Alf's collapse. Her immaturity reached new heights and even Gail snapped at her calling her a "child". The next came in 1995 when she absolutely belittled Don Brennan during the trip to London for Alf's OBE. Quite frankly it was nice to see Audrey get karma by being left stranded by Don and then missing Alf's ceremony and Betty taking her place. Especially after all the grief Audrey gave them both during this princess storyline. The third for me came in 1999 after Alf died. Audrey seemed more concerned about the life insurance and then when his will was read. Her reaction to the bequeathments was frankly disgusting. She wanted more but as Martin rightly said "You what's drained his bank balance? 13 years of funding her retail therapy". So there we go. That's my 3 worst Audrey moments.
@@davehenson7104 I've seen the first two, where she teated Ivy appallingly. Ivy could be quite a horror herself, of course, but I felt sorry for her in this instance. I've seen the episode where she spent a load of Alf's money in a hotel, I think the card she was using was cancelled when she went to pay her bill. I haven't got the scene where she misses out on Alf getting his OBE, but Audrey being stranded sounds good. And I didn't know about the scenes involving the reading of Alf's will. I'm more familiar with Audrey over the last 15 years, where she's a much more considerate and sympathetic character than she was here, and does have good things to say about her long-suffering late husband. And it seems he would have preferred to be with Rita and not Audrey, anyway. Based on what a mercenary opportunist he ended up with, he might well have wished he'd proposed to Mavis after Rita turned him down, or stayed single.
Derek blaming Norris for Mavis's treadmill accident would be like me blaming Harley Davidson when i fell off the back of my mate's bike and broke my ankle in 2015.
Audrey is absolutely monstrous by this period of the show. I never liked the character because she's selfish and dizzy, but the manipulative way she is now treating Alf shows how little conscience she actually has. I loved Alf and Renee's relationship, it was far more realistic and she would never have tricked or mistreated him. He should kick Audrey out. It irritates me that Gail and Alma laugh about Audrey's antics, it just encourages her bad behaviour, I don't find her funny or endearing, because rather than being a 'tart with a heart', she's just a nasty, talentless hanger on, whose only standing in the community is through her husband's achievements. Nothing to be proud of in her own life.
It’s funny you should say that as I also liked the Alf & Renee relationship but apparently the producers felt it wasn’t working and sacked Madge Hindle, harsh in my opinion. I thought she did a great job, loved her character’s sense of humour, her friendship with Bet was great.
@@EveHenleySpread absolutely. She was great, and very 3 dimensional compared to Audrey. Her and Bet together were great fun, and when she went fishing with Mavis, Alf and Fred, a couple of those scenes were among my all time favourites.
I really like Madge Hindle. She's a very good actress. Loved her in Corrie but also loved her playing Doreen in the ITV comedy Barbara. Renee always came across as a very open and likeable character. Yes her and Alf did have their ups and downs but Renee certainly would never go for malicious revenge or spite like Audrey did. After Blanche left the corner shop they needed a strong character to run the shop and Renee fit the bill perfectly. She proved formidable from the get go after going against Annie Walker over the off license plan. Definitely a fun and memorable character.
LOVED Alf and Renee, although I never could figure out why her name was pronounced the way it was. But yes to the couple. She kinda looked like Audrey, but had much, much more character.
Agree, Tricia was awful. But, for me, 1995 was a poor year for Corrie. Tricia moving into No. 1, the continuing Samir saga, Bet leaving and then the Malletts arriving (couldn't stand them either). And to top it all Vicky's seduction of bad boy Steve MacDonald - I think she only wanted him to score points over Fiona; and, naturally, it turned out an absolute disaster, ending with 'good girl' Vicky gaining a criminal record!
I agree but I’m really struggling to get through ‘96 currently - just nothing of interest seems to be happening! This whole Square Dealers nonsense irritates the hell out of me, I’m tempted to give up here (I was going to at least watch my own uploads lol).
Mavis and Derek involved in yet another tedious calamity with a mechanical contraption - first The Battle of the Boat, then the Drama of the Dormobile, now The Misery of the Mile Muncher. Audrey is at her peak of selfishness, dallying with Fred Elliott in order to social climb, and behaving horribly towards Alf and Betty. Don Brennan embarks on a new romance with dreary Josie. "Queen Victoria" (Vicky) is back long-term (watch out Fiona!) and also at the Rovers, Bet and Raquel's best storylines are now long over. Worst of all, to prepare us for the even worse Battersbys (still two years away), we now have moved into No. 1: Trashy Tricia.
Once the dreadful Battersby family came into it in 1997 is the moment i drifted away. But the show around this time had certainly started to lose its appeal.
I don't think she's particularly attractive. More importantly, she's so argumentative - about everything. And when she's invariably told to butt out, she adds the unappealing trait of snark to her repertoire.
1;42;25 Seems a bit odd that the writer would get Vera to ask Rita ' Have you been beaten by a bloke?' when Alan bradley tried to strangle and suffocate her.
As an American I was really impressed when I saw the Mayoral Chain of Office. The first time I saw Richard Hillman wearing one on Midsommer Murders, I thought about Henry VIII.

Sometimes those pints pulled are a disgrace, half of the glass is foam and never to the top. In the real world obviously with real beer, that wouldn't fly with customers at all.

Reg Holdsworths lines are really really genius!
Yes, very funny. I loved the scene when Curly tells Reg he's told the staff that's he's his boyfriend.
"The computer says no!" I wonder if the Little Britain boys saw that here first?!
I wondered the same thing.. we both can’t be wrong 😉
You forgot the cough at the end...😫
Thought that too
Poor Alf, his wife is so selfish, honestly think she just married him for what she could get out of it, she is more than likely using Fred too.
Ya think?
Well Alf got his own back in his will, left her nothing so far as I can remember, he bought the salon for her before he died and that's it.

It was a shock to see him this early...and more of a shock to hear him!
