Andy is so ballsy here. Even Kelly was expecting him to say something like "Oh well, we'll get back on our feet. I don't blame anyone." but Andy was like "Nah those bitches did me dirty."
My favorite thing about The Tonight Show was Andy returning. I sure hope he continues on with Conan in the future. They were just meant to work together. I love you, Andy!
Ive been a HUGE Coco fan since the very begining when most people thought he sucked when he first started out! I know this interview was a long time ago but it blew me away because Conan holds his tongue where as Andy delved further into the nonesense that occured and further made Leno look like the pure douche bag he really is!! I would say its sad what happened but the new show on TBS seems to be kickin ass!! ... Light House Gravy Boat ass!!! Conan and Andy are incredible!!!
Major props to Kelly on leading into that question. Called out that he wouldn't really be able to answer like he'd want to. Then Andy just goes..."well yes, actually." BAHA. I've never watched Regis and Kelly, but this makes we want to. She seems like a really cool lady.
good interview and it was great to see Andy. The funny thing about all this is that when you turn on the "Google-Transcribe Captions" it keeps turning "Conan" into "Coleman" lol
@banditr0se I liked him from the start, as Conan's side-kick in the 90's, but I really liked him after watching Andy Richter Controls the Univeese. That was a very funny and clever show, one of those comedies that don't get the respect they deserve.
goodbadugyl16: Here's the thing: Conan was established to the American public I would say. I rarely watched his show yet I knew who he was. Other shows that need "lead-ins" may not be established because they are "New" to the air-waves so there is a need to get their introduction from their popular friend.
Back when Letterman was passed over, Carson had him on & asked if he was angry about it. Dave said that he wasn't angry at Johnny or NBC because it was never offered to him, but if they promised him the show & then changed their mind, then he'd be pissed. This is EXACTLY what happened to Conan. Worse still, there was legitimate bitterness between Dave & NBC so they announced Conan as the successor to Leno just to avoid another PR mess. Leave it to Leno & those f'idiots at NBC to screw it up again! ...but don't blame Conan.
RE: "..but if they promised [Dave] the show & then changed their mind, then he'd be pissed. This is EXACTLY what happened to Conan." But it's not exactly what happened because Conan did get "The Tonight Show." He just didn't know that 5 years after he signed that deal, *NBC* would start begging Jay to stay by offering him a prime time show. It was a huge mistake, but that's hindsight. *NBC* just had to try and keep both guys, and that was everybody's downfall.
@Orangewind It directly affects ratings. Why for example 2 years ago did ABC put Grey's Anatomy in front of Lost? Because they knew there would be a large carry over of viewers to see Lost the following hour. Or why did CBS put that CEO reality show on after the Super Bowl, same reason.
It's subjective on who is funnier to the people. Like I said before, this isn't sports where you can tell who sucks and who doesn't fairly easy. It's very broad in the "Art" world. Money keeps people in business. Now if someone wants to take less money in order to stay on, that's something to talk about. But remember, Jay and Conan are paid MILLIONS so they would have to take a major pay-cut.
i finished the whole video and had to comment again, kelly ripa just loves hearing herself, couldnt believe she talked the whole dam clip, i knew andy was annoyed
Andy at the time had a net worth of around 8 million dollars so he really didn't have to worry about his children's future are being worried about finding work.
Honestly, Conan and Andy will find something better than the tonight show, NBC has no concept of good television, besides their comedy (although the Office is getting squeezed pretty good). Who at NBC thought that remakes of Night Rider and Bionic Woman was a good idea?! Praise the "Red One" and all his glory! I hope that tour happens because I would definitely go. The people need Conando!
Conan and his whole staff got a raw deal, and I think most of America can see that. I don't think Jay Leno is going to be as successful as he once was. Jay is a talented guy, and from many accounts a decent guy. But this was not a good thing he did in this case. A good performer knows when to leave the stage. Conan, Andy, and the gang will be back - count on it!
Is the key to have good shows back to back in order to keep the viewer (who may be tired from a long day at work) up because he is interested in the programming? If one show is boring...the viewer gets tired and turns the TV off and goes to bed. Yes, No...way off.
So in the end..."It's just business." Conan had his eyes on Jay's job or at least that time slot which can mean more viewers and more money). NBC didn't want to lose the younger Conan so they gave a little bit of room for Jay to swim a little longer before they asked him to leave the pool. Jay didn't want to but may have felt either he would be ready to leave (like you say and I can of doubt he would be ready given he is workaholic and will go to the end
Andy is cool and funny :D but i wanna see coco on National Television sorry andy u still rock. AHH I wanna see La bamba :( and Pierre. Oh and that guy that is quiet and has a straight face. :( I MISS CONAN. :( We got jimmy :)
He is making millions...not to hard to do. It's actually a must if you want to have loyal people and a good rep in the business and in life. They are getting paid MILLIONS to do their job. It's not surgery. For ratings: Who cares. Ratings reflect the demand and if he had poor ratings...that's on him.
But how did he feel when NBC approached him in the first place while he still had his show and if that is how it played out? If he wasn't ever approached, what would he have done? If it was his decision, you would think he would approach them first to tell him he is set to retire. But maybe he could have said "NO" and told them that he wouldn't be ready by then. Although maybe they just fire him then and there and Conan gets the job.
True, Conan didn't have to pay his people out of his pay-check...no matter how much he got and could afford. It means he is not a greedy prick like some others and understands what is the right thing to do. I'm with you on that.
I watch TV much the same way you do - lead-ins barely matter to me (and with a DVR, the time the show is on barely matters). What you might be missing in this discussion is that ratings reports show that lead-ins still matter in big numbers. Most people, it seems, would rather not change the channel. Thus, a weak 10pm lead-in to the late local news means you will lose viewers to that news broadcast and the talk show following it.
Well, Conan fans, there's a bright side to this. Conan will no longer have to cater to Jay Leno's crowd or even try to. So he is free to go back to experimental comedy sketch Conan of the good old days. Here's to you Cone-sy, and your new home on TBS!
No, Conan didn't try very hard to cater to Jay's audience, which is in part why he starting losing to Letterman pretty quickly after he took over "The Tonight Show."
No; if Carson was the lead-in to Jay's show I think people would watch Carson, then go to bed. Carson would be their "fix" for the night. That's something I was asking about if that is what they blame...having two shows of similar entertainment is not good close together. Is that the reason?
Really? I don't study how ratings work but from a personal stand-point...I'll search what show I want and view it that way. I can care less what's on before or what's on after...I'm just putting on the TV for the show I want to watch. How did Leno's "major flop at 10" kill local news market ratings? If you want to watch the news, wouldn't you just watch it??? Why would you care what's on before? Damn...I'm missing something in this discussion.
No... every late night show depends on lead-ins, it's a known fact. If CSI gets twice the viewers of the Leno show that's going to affect your ratings. Many people stay with the 11pm news and watch the late night show on the same network. However Conan's ratings weren't bad. He was still competitive in the key demo. Leno's major flop at 10 killed local news market's ratings. NBC had to cancel him but they did not want to pay his 170 million buyout so Conan got screwed. Leno played victim.
its definitely not leno's fault. not like he has decision or anything that affects numerous people's lives. his 800 cars are MUCH more important than conan's kids, andy's kids, or everyone on the staff that moved from new york
"Needed more time": unfortunately, we live in a faster world where "more time" is a negative. It means they are losing...and a loss of money. Everything is about NOW NOW NOW. Quick results. People want to run before they crawl. Lots of cocaine I guess. It's also why poor quality is allowed in. Kind of sad.
It's so annoying how Leno was acting like a victim when he was the ONLY person to benefit from this debacle. Also, lol at NBC. They pretty much traded in Conan for Jimmy Fallon : /
So yeah...I can see what he is upset. He feels he was rail-roded. That sucks and that's the issue I was interested in with how people are viewing it. Business isn't "clean." It certainly is a great gig to have. You get paid millions to tell a couple of jokes and talk to celebs. I'll leave it at that without ripping into the job anymore. He'll bounce back and he isn't going to miss a meal tonight.
or he just felt it was the right thing to do but was iffy about it and either felt or knew he couldn't say NO. When the time came, he wasn't ready so the need for that job back when lost forced him back in which messed up the plan. So...all parties are right and wrong on some level I guess...although maybe not Conan since you have to know he was gunning for that time-slot at some point before it's to late.
NO...ratings/popularity aren't a reflection of quality. In the "Art" world...it's much easier to get away with lack of talent and still be popular than say...sports. In sports for example, if you suck...you're out. Movies, Music, Art, etc....you still have a shot with poor talent or what is seen by someone as poor talent. But for ratings, this is show-"BUSINESS" and you need ratings to get money in order to stay on TV...which is a reflection of the audience.
I feel sorry for conan but he is well known he shouldnt have much of a prob getting a job but all those poor people that are in the background with no connections
I miss the Tonight Show with Conan...hell, I miss Late Night with Conan; late night TV just isn't worth watching now. On the plus side Jay Leno is so dull I have been falling asleep sooner, but I'd choose Conan over sleep anyday.
@dlwke2 Well Jay doesn't get tens of millions. More like 4 million Actually Dave beat him on Monday. That was quick. Jay had bad ratings for 2.5 years and it took him a Hugh Grant interview to overtake Dave. Conan was doing very well in the key 18-49 demo and was building an audience. When Leno had the 10pm show it was a flop and was a terrible lead-in for Conan Because Leno had a $175 million buyout compared to Conan's 30 million, NBC made the cheapest choice. They're screwed for the future.

Because they are only interested in one particular fight. The "Lead-in" fights to them are not important. They'll either sit around and just talk if they come early or will show up 10 minutes before the final fight starts.
It sure was a big, sad mess. But the whole thing could've been averted IF conan had just accepted one of the huge offers he was getting for a show of his own at *ABC* or *FOX,* and he wouldn't have had to wait all those years for it to happen either. But, Conan just had to have "The Tonight Show," and he trusted the same network that screwed both Jay, and Dave, too. I think we can blame Conan a little bit for that.
Andy is so ballsy here. Even Kelly was expecting him to say something like "Oh well, we'll get back on our feet. I don't blame anyone." but Andy was like "Nah those bitches did me dirty."
Andy Richter cracks me up every night on Conan! LOVE YOU ANDY!!!
My favorite thing about The Tonight Show was Andy returning. I sure hope he continues on with Conan in the future. They were just meant to work together. I love you, Andy!
I'm glad hes saying what we all been thinking bout the ratings issue.
Conan and Andy are incredible!!!
this both makes me love Andy Richter AND Kelly Ripa more. thanks for posting!
I still laugh when he goes “…yes!”
Andy is probably the best side kick since McMahon
Major props to Kelly on leading into that question. Called out that he wouldn't really be able to answer like he'd want to.
Then Andy just goes..."well yes, actually." BAHA.
I've never watched Regis and Kelly, but this makes we want to. She seems like a really cool lady.
Anybody else grow up watching conan and andy every night? I know I did.
Andy Richter, the Swedish German
Andy Richter the Swedish German doesn't go for any of that network funny business
Ja ja
Andy rocks.
funny how the audience applauded at the idea of kelly ripa being flung into them. people cheer for anything if they're asked to
Lova ya Andy! I'll be watching you and Conan when you're back on TV. And if you do the tour I'll see you at the Dodge Theater!
I want to WORK for CONAN O'Brien. he is one responsible person. Very Fair as well.
Andy is an awesome guy.
good interview and it was great to see Andy. The funny thing about all this is that when you turn on the "Google-Transcribe Captions" it keeps turning "Conan" into "Coleman" lol

Thanks for posting this. I couldn't watch this in the UK and I was desperate to see what Andy had to say.
I miss the trinity of late night: Conan, Andy, and Max Weinberg.
Can’t forget Joel Godard
Go Andy! And Go Kelly for letting him have a chance to talk about it.
1:20 thats class!
also gives me hope that coco will stay in LA
EFF The Chin. Conan is the future. TEAM CONAN !!!
HAPPY 48TH BIRTHDAY PAUL ANDREW ANDY RICHTER !!!!!!
Go Andy!! We love you!!!!!!!

That Star Wars reference from Kelly was top notch. Shouts to Red Five. Death to the Empire.
I want to know more about this "tour"....
my hero

Awesome. I know Conan doesn't want to be bitter about it, but good for Andy.
Good job.
GO ANDY!!! AND GO TEAM COCO!!!!!! :D
@Orangewind
It directly affects ratings. Why for example 2 years ago did ABC put Grey's Anatomy in front of Lost? Because they knew there would be a large carry over of viewers to see Lost the following hour.
Or why did CBS put that CEO reality show on after the Super Bowl, same reason.
I wish the first part was on the clip.
Mort:oh King Julien wait for me
jay leno is great...
FOR ME TO POOP ON!!!
Glad Andy spoke his truth, Conan had to wait many months before he could speak, so stupid.
It's subjective on who is funnier to the people. Like I said before, this isn't sports where you can tell who sucks and who doesn't fairly easy. It's very broad in the "Art" world.

down with Jay Leno, I'll never watch him again
Same here, but full disclosure, I never really watched him previously. I couldn't stand how often he ripped off bits from other people.
Wow, Andy pulled no punches.
Go Andy!
=)
Andy at the time had a net worth of around 8 million dollars so he really didn't have to worry about his children's future are being worried about finding work.

Who knows. I'm not worried about it. I just thought it was interesting as far as how human choices are made and so on...and how people are viewing it.
...YES.
Yes!Yes I do!
@dafuksup could not agree with you more. He really creates a distance between Conan and the audience in my opinion.
TEAM COCO! I
"the sidebar"
@Orangewind they gave leno his own show at 10:00 but eventually bombed
which then ensue the drama that happened after
Drama began as soon as Conan took over "The Tonight Show" and began losing to Letterman pretty consistently throughout the summer of 2009.
Jeezus Andy I love you & all but what's with the GIANT shoulder pads on an already inflated suit??
Is the key to have good shows back to back in order to keep the viewer (who may be tired from a long day at work) up because he is interested in the programming?

Do people pay attention to their words anymore? "I feel like you're the _get_ of the century right now." Damn.
Was it just me or did it feel like ol andy was rambling a lil bit here lol
i think he was just very upset still about all this
Agreed... I watch Letterman til Kimmel then to Fallon.. No Leno at all..
Andy is cool and funny :D but i wanna see coco on National Television sorry andy u still rock. AHH I wanna see La bamba :( and Pierre. Oh and that guy that is quiet and has a straight face. :(
I MISS CONAN. :( We got jimmy :)
Watch out for those Swiss-Germans... they're pretty smart.
He is making millions...not to hard to do. It's actually a must if you want to have loyal people and a good rep in the business and in life.
They are getting paid MILLIONS to do their job. It's not surgery.

MORT!!! LOL
Andy you can be in my videos!
Keep on YouTubin!
Jay's show was so bad, that people changed the channel and just ended up watching the News on a diffrent channel.
^_^

someone give me a summary
its definitely not leno's fault. not like he has decision or anything that affects numerous people's lives. his 800 cars are MUCH more important than conan's kids, andy's kids, or everyone on the staff that moved from new york
its not actually leno's fault he was upset at first too. it was nbc's decision
Andy needs to go on some more shows. This was alight, but that woman is awful.
@arodaman Unlikely, as that would push Jimmy Kimmel's show back. Fox is more likely, though FX would be ideal, if less likely to happen.
"Needed more time": unfortunately, we live in a faster world where "more time" is a negative. It means they are losing...and a loss of money. Everything is about NOW NOW NOW. Quick results. Im still with Coco
ANDY! ANDY! ANDY! ANDY! I'm with COCO.

@crock703 And thank God for that!
She's good
Kelly may be annoying but would you rather have Kathie Lee or Kelly?
@dlwke2 Well Jay doesn't get tens of millions. More like 4 million Actually Dave beat him on Monday. That was quick.
Jay had bad ratings for 2.5 years and it took him a Hugh Grant interview to overtake Dave. Conan was doing very well in the key 18-49 demo and was building an audience. When Leno had the 10pm show it was a flop and was a terrible lead-in for Conan
Because Leno had a $175 million buyout compared to Conan's 30 million, NBC made the cheapest choice. They're screwed for the future.
pfff, he's no Kevin Eubanks.
But in the end, the show really isn't that important to the people. If it was, people would find a way to watch it.
I'll be watching a Boxing fight this Saturday Night and most of the people I will be waching it with can care less what fights come on before it. Why? Because they are only interested in one particular fight. The "Lead-in" fights to them are not important. They'll either sit around and just talk if they come early or will show up 10 minutes before the final fight starts.
coco forever
It sure was a big, sad mess. I think we can blame Conan a little bit for that.
True true
"our ratings were okay until our leadin changed"
translation: Jay fucked us
Kelli isn't there for listening she is there for looking.
How Kelly ever got this job let alone kept it is beyond me. She’s awful.
