I always thought of Hiei's power to be more like an extension of his aura, in the case of Fist of the Mortal Flame, and the fact that in order to summon the Darkness, he molds his energy into bait like a Transmuter would. I see his Darkness technique to be more of an emulation of the Dragon, especially given that by the end of the tournament, his aura is that of the Dragon. He doesn't actually create the Dragon from thin air, but calls it, and eventually adds its aura to his own. Think more of Zeno Zoldyck and his Dragon transmutations. Kuwabara is a strange case. But given that he is creating a solid object that gains special properties that he thinks unlocks, I classify him as a conjurer. I think Transmuter powers tend to be more grounded in a real thing. For example if a Transmuter were to make a spirit sword, he would basically be training his entire aura to act like a real sword, and not a special one like kuwabara's.
