I wrote the song when I was 21, and already a 9 year veteran of the music industry. Nina's version is brilliant. She re-writes it some here and there, and I've never known whether the ad libbed sections at the end were because she forgot, was overwhelmed, or what - but brilliant nonetheless. One of the most underrated arrangers and pianists ever, too.

+Janis Ian Beautiful song, can't believe you had all this insight at 21. I think Nina forgot the lyrics but was the type of artist that when she made stuff up, it was beautiful because she could really take things deeper.

+Janis Ian Thank you so much for writing this song! It truly is great, and I love the original of course!
I actually heard Nina's version first, and I was hesitant to find the original because I didn't know whether it could get any better than that, but I was certainly not disappointed when I heard you sing it! Also, this song brings tears to my eyes, so you really have made your mark in a truly meaningful way, because, in my eyes at least, the most important thing art can do is make the listener or watcher or whatever else really "feel." So again, thank you!

I first heard this version while watching bojack horseman and I was stuck in a heavy depression. I could never bring myself to listen to the full song because of the affect that scene had on me. I am currently going through one of the hardest times in my life transitioning into an adult, and I’m listening to this version for the first time fully and when I tell you the emotion this song has invoked and drawn out of me. This is the third time in a row listening and just bawling. The most beautiful, touching rendition of a song.

That girl standing up was genuinely MEANT to happen. The audience laughing like it was comical when she was being dead serious. Us never knowing why she was so fed up. I'm so GLAD that girl stood up. Because when she started the song that second time? Something has changed within her. It was like she caught her stride but was still shaky with irritation and she channelled all of that into a new version of what she had planned to perform. Wow.

"Some make it when they're old, perhaps they have a soul they aren't afraid to bare. Perhaps there's nothing there." At this moment her eyes get wet, she looks away from the audience, and blinks a few times. Then she takes a long pause. When she says, "old" her voice creaks as if tired. These little things communicate so much.

Stars, they come and go, they come fast, they come slow
They go like the last light of the sun, all in a blaze
And all you see is glory
Hey but it gets lonely there when there's no one there to share
We can shake it away, if you'll hear a story
People lust for fame like athletes in a game
They break their collarbones and come up swinging
    Some of them are crowned
Some of them are downed, and some are lost and never found
But most have seen it all
They live their lives in sad cafés and music halls
And they always have a story
Some make it when they're young
Before the world has done its dirty job
And later on someone will say
"You've had your day, now you must make way"
    (Don't they always?)
But you'll never know the pain of using a name you never owned
Years of forgetting what you know too well
That you who gave the crown have been let down
You try to make amends without defending
Perhaps pretending you never saw the eyes of young men at twenty-five
That followed as you walk and asked for autographs
Or kissed you on the cheek and you never can believe they really loved you
Some make it when they're old
Perhaps they have a soul they aren't afraid to bare
    Perhaps there's nothing there
But anyway that isn't what I meant to say, I meant to tell about a story
    Because we all have stories
    I can't remember it anyway
So I'll tell about the mood that's in the United States today
    And permeating even Switzerland
    It goes
But I continue away until I get it together
Some women have a body men will want to see
And so they put it on display
Some people play a fine guitar, I could listen to them play all day
But anyway, I'm trying to tell my story
Janis Ian told it very well
Janis Joplin told it even better
Billie Holiday even told it even better
We always, we always, we always have a story
The latest story that I know is the one that I'm supposed to go out with (x5)

      @nice3333333333 7 лет назад +3

      dazed darla
That sounds rather narrow minded of you. Then again, I suppose the principle of talent, in basic form from certain perspectives, by its self could be considered rather a very narrow minded concept just as so. Ergo the obtuseness of one's view of talent may not be a result of a simplistic mentality, but perhaps instead a simplistic interpretation of what is actually meant of to posess ability prescribed as talent. One would argue that the ability prescribed as talent is of opinional state, thus not bound within the parameters of logical argumentation. Logical argumentation cannot sustain of logical priority if not objective, and the liking and admiring of others ability may therefore not follow underneath its category, neither may right nor wrong in a world without meaning. Though flawlessly solving the common enemy, the solution of talent to be determined through opinion has the unwanted effect of rendering talent futile. In a world where everything by everyone can be descripted as talented, nothing comes to be meant of the word: If everyone is special, then no one is special. So if the parameters of logic are too objective and the parameters of opinion renders describing talent futile, what parameters may then validate the judgdement of talent? One's interpretation of talent may just prove to be a fabrication of individual choice we have determined to believe. A choice that can devide us as well as it can unite us. So don't laugh at other people's choices. You might not understand them, but understand that they do.

I joked to my husband that she wasn't an easy woman and even a bit of a diva. But then she started to sing this song and all the way I was looking at her eyes and listening to the words she sang...I started to cry. Maybe I cried for her, for the way she got so often misunderstood...maybe it was just the lyrics...I don' t know...but it felt as if what she was singing from her soul. Anyway...diva or not...troublesome or not...I don' t care...She feels...truly feels.

I think some people don't realize when you come to a seated concert you don't get up to leave until there is an intermission. So many artists who are serious about what they do find it very rude because it causes distraction to them and others. It does not necessarily mean they are being a diva at that moment.

Gosh… was zapping channels and saw the end of a french movie. They played this song. Immediately i shazamed it and it took me right here. I don’t know what to say. Idk. Somehow she sings, she speaks, she reads the lyrics. I felt her. After the ‘sit down’ she seems nervous, then the magic took over. Makes me relive my life, at least the main events, i loved it. I have never heard of her before now, but ima doing it for a memory. RIP great soul

I was never one for singing what I really feel
Except tonight, I'm bringing everything I know that's real
    Stars, they come and go
    They come fast or slow
They go like the last light of the sun, all in a blaze
And all you see is glory
    But it gets lonely there
When there's no one here to share
We can shake it away if you'll hear a story
    People lust for fame
Like athletes in a game we break our collarbones
    And come up swinging
    Some of us are downed
    Some of us are crowned
And some are lost and never found
But most have seen it all
They live their lives in sad cafes and music halls
    They always have a story
Some make it when they're young
Before the world has done its dirty job
And later on, someone will say
"You've had your day you must make way"
But they'll never know the pain
Of living with a name you never owned
Or the many years forgetting what you know too well
The ones who gave the crown have been let down
You try to make amends without defending
Perhaps pretending you never saw the eyes
Of grown men of twenty five that followed as you walked
    And asked for autographs
Or kissed you on the cheek
And you never could believe they really loved you
Some make it when they're old
(Perhaps they have a soul they're not afraid to bare
    Or perhaps there's nothing there)
    Some women have a body
    Men will want to see,
So they put it on display
Some people play a fine guitar
I could listen to them play all day
Some ladies really move across a stage
And gee, they sure can dance
I guess I could learn how if I have it half a chance
But I always feel so funny when my body tries to soar
And I seem to always worry about missing the next chord
I guess there isn't anything to put up on display
Except the tunes and whatever else I say
Anyway, that isn't really what I meant to say
I meant to tell a story
I live from day to day
Stars, they come and go they come fast or slow
They go like the last light of the sun, all in a blaze
And all you see is glory
But those who've seen it all they live their lives
In sad cafes and music halls
    We always have a story
So if you don't lose patience with my fumbling around,
I'll come up singing for you even when I'm down

I think that the 'funny' was at first meant to establish a baseline of the characters. After season one they went to creating more complex story arcs and watching them interact. By the time season three had hit the show turned into a clusterf*ck of Bojack's world, allowing seemingly random events to dig deeper into Bojack himself. Throughout the third season we see glimmers of a good heart within him, but the mistake that people seem to make is seeing that for who he is. Whereas, in reality (in this fiction) he is nothing more than a depressed fool who's run out of options.

"Hey, girl, sit down. Sit down"
Right there you can see that she just wanted to be heard one last time and tell here story. It just goes to show how much it was important to her that her audience hears here not listens but hears.
You can see how tiered she is. One lost soul in an unfair world trying to connect with anything.
Artists and creators before there times truly are alone and tortured souls. But at least upcoming generations may find comfort in the fact that they had a soul mate or a best friend but unfortunately fate would have it that they were before or after there time on this earth.
I have nothing but respect for this beautiful person.
