Heather Ann Thompson new book, “Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and its Legacy,” is a nationally respected expert on mass incarceration and through her research she has reached some provocative conclusions about the role Michigan’s criminal laws have played in Detroit’s slow-motion economic collapse in the decades following the 1967 uprisings.
