Hey Nick Thanks for the videos man. Your make me want to get my own old school Hilux like yours and hit the road ....keep those videos coming man ,if you ever come to the platteland give me a shout there's always place for you to stay Thanks again
Graham I found a very large hole behind the rear left seat, patched that up. As well as a smaller one which I now use to run wiring to the canopy. I suspect under my floor carpets as well. I haven't checked the steering column
I managed to seal the tailgate with the rubbers that they for door seals. Looks terrible but 99% better. I couldn't find anyone selling a produxt for the older model hilux
I'll let you know how it goes once Ive moved it. A carrier makes sense when you have a tent on your roof, you want a 2nd spare and have nowhere else to put it, but in my case i have the space, so lets see
Great video, but that battery issue is not so good, as you said you get what you pay for and in SA even the big 4x4 companies cannot be trusted to do a good job. Like the Grabbers, but gonna try these new Maxxis 811's. Happy travels, say hi to Frank!!!
hey Bob, very true. You think that 4x4 companies with their large shops should give the best, but often they sell cheap imports at a premium. One need to do a lot of research, before buying. Also I have my shops that I trust in Namibia. About the tyres, I think there is a number of brands that are very good off road, I will never commit to saying a specific brand is the best. A lot also depends on how you drive, your experience and how you treat your tyres. I've seen a lot of vehicles with Maxxis and like the Grabbers are definitely part of that group in my opinion. But you also get those never heard of brands and those are usually the people you find stuck with a flat/destroyed tyre next to the road. Let us know how it goes, they are good looking. I'll tell Frank👍🙂Be safe and happy travels!
I get you, think I brought back half of Botswana😂doing some research and speaking to a lot of people. My main problem are gaps around the tailgate. Cant find a kit, so it will have to be a DIY job
Bushtech offers a dust proofing solution for their canopies. It involves mostly the tailgate area as well as nooks and crannies. Contact them. They are in Joburg so I don't know if their agents offer the same. Worth a try.
I ended up sealing it with door rubbers. Got some online for R150. Patched up all the spots where I could see light and its 99% better. Aesthetically not very pleasing but its holding.
Nice videos, thanks. I got the same model hilux as you. I put some new leaf springs and shocks from Mikem Suspensions. It's made a good, positive difference to my vehicle. I'm sure they will ship to 🇳🇦. How do u plan on sleeping in the back of your wagon? It's so short only midgets would fit.
ive only heard good things about Mikem, the after sales service especially, maybe I should contact them. One of my biggest concerns is getting suspension parts out to me when Im stuck somewhere in Africa. Haha, yes. Not a lot of space. I just about fit in when I stretch across, but not a comfortable sleep. My plan is to keep the back open most of the times, cover with a mozzie net and only close the sides of the canopy.
The leaf springs are tough and I doubt they would break. Shocks they supply are the Bilstein. But realistically, you could have any brand if shocks or spring or coils that could break, and ubwoukd still have the same challenge getting spares or parts, so I would not let that deter your decisions.
@Barefoot I ended up not replacing it, due to finances and two separate garages telling there's no need. Than its good I didnt, if the chassis goes my entire trip is pretty much done. Its my worst fear.
It's been ok. Never had issues until now. I service it regularly and then try and fix as soon as I find something before it breaks. Currently stuck in Lusaka, Zambia. Rear left wheel bearings gone and damage to the drive shaft. Struggling to find a new shaft
Great information!! Thank you.
Always a pleasure🙂
Great video! Good tip about two spare tires! The bed roll in the canopy will be nice and probably more efficient that some other options. Great video!
Thanks! been difficult to decide between going rooftop or ground tent, maybe this is the solution. Only time will tell...
very informative nice one
Thanks as always Bob!

Thanks Allan! life on the road can be tough, but equally rewarding. Im not complaining🙂 will definitely take you up on that offer
I need to investigate how dust gets into the cab. I suspect a hole behind the rear seat and I can see some dust around the steering column.

I was contemplating a spare wheel carrier on the rear bumper, but following your advice it might not be such a good idea ...
