Awesome collection! For radio program discs, they'd do Side 1/3 and 2/4 so they could have the next side queued up to play on a second player for when the first disc ended, so there was no dead air during the side changeover.

I enjoyed very much your video. I'm a super Elton John fan too. (I just ordered online the "Leather Jackets" album which is the only one was missing in my own collection)
Why no Greatest Hits 2 and The very best of?
I recently bought a bootleg of 10 CDs including all the B sides, tracks on Soundtracks and tribute albums up until mid 2000's. If you're interested let me know if you want to know the web and the seller.

This is awesome! I love seeing this ranking. Your tie for first is excellent. Captain Fantastic is so good and Tumbleweed only gets better with age. Interesting to see A Single Man and The Fox make your top 10. I wonder how common that would be among EJ fans? I like both but they are never go-to's for me. The original Thom Bell sessions on vinyl came out in summer 1979, before Victim of Love, when Mama Can't Buy Love was a hit. Then many years later the CD came out and it had 6 songs and a different version-I think a lesser version- of Are you Ready for Love. The original was much better IMO.

Loving this walk through your collection. Since I have no life right now (thank you, COVID-19), I decided to do a running commentary. Hope you don't mind terribly. Feel free to read or ignore at your discretion.
Live Albums: Your collection of live recordings is incredible! Great job!
Empty Sky: While Elton and Bernie have acknowledged how naive the songs were, they do have fond memories of recording it, since it was the first one. Elton has often said that "Skyline Pigeon" was the first song he and Bernie ever got excited about, and that when he first heard the title track, he thought it was the greatest thing he ever heard. I'm not sure I agree on the title track, since I always felt it should have been slower and more wistful, and it kind of goes on longer than it really should, but that's just me.
Honky Chateau: The photo from the album cover was taken during his 1970 tour, when he sported a beard, hence why he looks so different there.
Captain Fantastic: The show definitely sounded great. Unfortunately, it didn't take so well with the audience. Elton had arranged for a host of other artists to perform before he went on (sort of like a festival type thing). The Beach Boys had preceded him, playing an incredible hit-laden set, and the audience expected Elton to do the same. Instead, he gave them an album of unfamiliar material. One reviewer looked outside the arena during the set and saw a whole stream of people walking out of the show.
Here and There: It *was* Lennon's last performance. They also performed "I Saw Her Standing There", which was included not only on that reissue of Here and There, but also as the B-Side of "Philadelphia Freedom" in 1975.
A Single Man: There were a lot of changes on that album. It's one of only two albums out of Elton's 33 studio releases that did not include any lyrics from Bernie Taupin (bonus tracks on the reissue excluded), and it was his first album aside from Empty Sky not to have been produced by Gus Dudgeon. These two factors contributed a lot to the change in sound. It's a great experiment on Elton's part, and vastly underrated due to the long shadow cast over it by his classic '70s repertoire.
Victim of Love: What you're holding actually *is* a reissue of it. I don't know what possessed them to remaster it while they still haven't remastered Leather Jackets, but there you go.
Thom Bell Sessions: "Are You Ready for Love" only became a hit in around 2003, when Fatboy Slim randomly decided to remix it and put it out as a single. "Are You Ready" had been a UK single in 1979, but it tanked in the charts at that time.
21 at 33: The counting of albums is a bit wonky. It was actually only his 14th studio album, but if you count the live, soundtrack, and compilation albums, it was his 21st. Still, no matter how you count it, he had a *very* impressive discography by the age of 33, so the boast is justified. What you have there is the original CD issue of 21 at 33, so no bonus tracks would be on that. Unfortunately, the remaster didn't include bonus tracks either, which is a shame, because there were a *tonne* of great B-Sides and other non-album recordings at that time that have yet to see an official CD release.
The Fox: This, to me, is one of his most underrated albums. He took a lot of chances with the songs on it. "Carla/Etude" is one of my favourite Elton songs of all time. Funny enough, "Nobody Wins" was originally a French song called "J'Veux d'la Tendresse" ("I Want Some Tenderness"). Elton heard a recording of it by French singer Janic Prevost when he was driving one day, and was so moved by it that he decided to record it himself. French pressings of the album include Elton's own version of the original French lyrics, and he even performed a bilingual version of it in France on his 1982 tour.
Breaking Hearts: There was a remaster of it in 2003 with some new liner notes, but unfortunately, no bonus tracks on it. Probably not worth your while. I never liked "Passengers" until I found out that it was about South African apartheid. That gave the song more meaning for me.
Live in Australia: Yup, "Candle in the Wind" was a massive success in the US and Canada. In fact, this was the first time the song had been released as a single in the US and Canada at *all*, since his North American record label released "Bennie and the Jets" from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road instead of "Candle", which had been the single everywhere else. Also, if you're going chronologically, this one should come after Leather Jackets, since the live album was both recorded and released after Leather Jackets was.
Leather Jackets: Elton has gone on-record citing this one as his worst album, while Bernie considers The Big Picture the worst. I personally love a few of the songs on here, including "Slow Rivers", "Heartache All Over the World", "Paris", and "I Fall Apart". You're right, it's never been reissued, although it *is* available for streaming on iTunes.
Reg Strikes Back: You've got your stories crossed here. While Elton has had plenty of auctions of his personal belongings over the years for charity, and he *was* nearly bankrupt near the end of the '90s due to mismanagement of his finances by his former manager John Reid, this *particular* 1988 auction was held for neither of these reasons. He had simply acquired so much stuff over the years, between his addiction to shopping, his many stage outfits, and his fascination with collecting art and antiques, that he literally couldn't move around in his mansion anymore (First World Problems doesn't even *begin* to cover that!), so he decided to sell just about all of it off. He kept the profits himself in this particular case, partly to finance the renovation of his home.
Sleeping with the Past: This album was inspired by the soul artists of the 1960s, similar in concept to Billy Joel's An Innocent Man, which paid direct tribute to the 1950s.
Ray Cooper Show: Elton still tours with Ray on occasion, though these days, with Ray getting on in years, Elton's full-time percussionist is the talented John Mahon. Ray played on most of Elton's classic albums from the '70s, and was a member of Elton's touring band from 1974-77. Elton and Ray did a couple of shows together, just the two of them, in London in 1977, and then did a full world tour in 1979, including unprecedented first-time performances in Israel and the USSR (a first not only for them, but for *any* Western rock artist).
Rare Masters: You're right, to this day, Friends has never been released on CD aside from this collection. It probably never will be, since CDs are so outmoded nowadays.
RuPaul remixes: While they're probably too long for just listening, I'm sure some of them went over very well in nightclubs back in the day. In fact, this version of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" was a huge hit on the dance charts in 1994.
Made in England: Neat little find with the concert ticket!
"Recover Your Soul" was actually the second single off The Big Picture. The first was "Something About the Way You Look Tonight", which was released in two versions, the first on its own, and then the re-release, which shared its A-Side status with "Candle in the Wind 1997", the famous tribute to Princess Diana, which I'm actually shocked you don't have.
That Aida (pronounced ay-YEE-dah) all-star recording really doesn't do the show any favours. I've never seen the musical, but I'd love to. Elton's solo demos of the songs are way better than the ones on that collection. You might be interested to know that Aida was actually based on a 19th-Century opera by Giuseppe Verdi.
"I Want Love": Robert Downey Jr. had indeed just gotten out of rehab. Elton didn't want to appear in his music videos anymore, and he thought that Downey's story would lend an extra poignancy to the lyric, so they asked him to do it, and it went over really well.
Wonderful Crazy Night: Came out in 2016.

    • @robdaviesprogm
      @robdaviesprogm 4 года назад +3

I had to split this in two because it got so long LOL.
I Get a Little Bit Lonely: Those songs from the early '60s were probably a combination of the songs they were writing to please themselves and the songs that record label boss Dick James wanted them to write for artists like Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck, which ultimately weren't picked up by anyone notable (other than Lulu singing "I Can't Go On Living WIthout You" for the Eurovision song contest, which was a disaster).
11-17-70 Record Store Day reissue: Sadly, that version of the concert doesn't have the songs in running order as they were performed on the night of the show. "Amoreena" wasn't included on the original 1971 release, although it was included as a bonus track for the 1995 Classic Years reissue of the album.
A Single Man Picture Disc: There's actually a promo-only edition of this picture disc, which has Elton in the same pose as the front cover, but shot from the back, on Side 2 instead of the car picture. It's an extremely rare collectors' item.
"Les Aveux" and "Donner Pour Donner" were big hits in France in 1980 when they were released. I *wish* they had been put out as bonus tracks on either 21 at 33 or The Fox!
Elton John Interview: The reason the do Side 1 and 3 on one record, and Side 2 and 4 on the other, is because there used to be record players that you could load multiple discs into, and they would automatically switch discs, but they couldn't flip the record over, so it made more sense to have Side 1 on Disc 1, Side 2 on Disc 2, then you'd flip *both* discs over manually and reload them for Side 3 on Disc 1, and Side 4 on Disc 2. This probably would have been most useful for radio DJs, who would have been the primary target market for this kind of release.
Too Low for Zero vinyl: Well, your dad knows *now*! :P
"Sad Songs" hat-shaped 45: That's a rare find, actually. It was only sold on his 1984 world tour!
"Skyline Pigeon": Strictly speaking, the piano version wasn't on Don't Shoot Me. It was released as the B-Side of "Daniel", and was only included as a bonus track on the reissue of Don't Shoot Me in the '90s.
"Honey Roll" wasn't done with Cat Stevens. It was a leftover song from the Tumbleweed Connection sessions that was included on the Friends soundtrack. The similarly-titled "Honey *Man*" was a duet with Cat Stevens which was never officially released.
The "Little Jeannie" single artwork is the same as that on 21 at 33. One card hand shows an Ace and a 2 ("21"), while the other shows two 3s ("33").
"Hey Papa Legba": Legba is actually a voodoo god, and the lyrics to the song seem to suggest it's about a voodoo priest, although I could be wrong about that.

Wow, this is awesome! Thank you because I really enjoyed all your comments. This is a great way to spend some time indoors if you ask me.
Captain Fantastic - I read the same thing about how poorly the show was received and I equate it to anytime I've seen an artist (maybe it's even my first time seeing them live) and they play an entire new album through. I don't always mind this but there have been a few instances where the album hadn't been released so sometimes hearing it live for the first time is worse (or better!) than the album.
Here and There - Definitely the first live album of his I ever picked up. It was hard to stop as you saw with the many live recordings I've picked up over the years.
A Single Man - Because of all the changes you noted, it took awhile for me to really get into this album. I do really enjoy it now and if you're listening chronologically, as you've said, it really is quite different and adventurous and a very rich and rewarding experience if you settle in for the ride!
Victim of Love - I enjoyed the fact that the title track made an appearance in the Rocketman film.
Thom Bell - Huh, I am not aware of the Fatboy Slim remix so thank you for that!
21 at 33 - I do like the b-sides to this album. Steal Away Child and Love So Cold are pretty good.
Live in Australia - Haha, LOVE your note about the chronology of this album and Leather Jackets! It's a collector's paradise out there and these sort of notes make it worthwhile opening up a discussion!
Reg Strikes Back - You must be right about the auctions because when I was first really getting into Elton it was in the 90's and that's when I remember him auctioning things off for financial reasons. Probably just got that crossed in my head with the 80's auction :)
Ray Cooper - I was so happy they finally issued a solid release of the USSR shows Cooper and Elton did together. I picked up that CD and Vinyl during RSD last year and was happy I did. There's a great little documentary about that trip too (I'm sure you've seen it) called To Russia With Elton that I enjoy. Some good performances but really, above all, a very interesting look at a country that, as you said, at the time did not allow Western rock artists to perform.
'97 Candle In The Wind - You know, someone else mentioned this too. I definitely had this at some point and every time I go to a record store, I see it for very cheap. I always think I have it but when I ended up doing this, I realized it was missing. There were a few things like that that I acquired soon after this video but all good. It is an essential part of his collection of course.
Have you heard his Lestat demos? There's some good stuff there. I hope they have some kind of official release of that one day. Kind of doubtful given its short run on Broadway (or off-Broadway)

@@seangraham9266 Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my dissertation so thoroughly. It's a rare treat to be able to talk to a fellow fan.
      A couple of responses:
A Single Man: Yeah, that one took me a while too. I had the original CD release first, and bought it during a phase when I was really into uptempo numbers, which meant I only enjoyed three of the songs on it. It grew on me later when I bought the reissue with the five bonus tracks.
Victim of Love: Oh my GOD I went nuts in the theatre when this song came up! I was probably the only one in the whole place who knew it LOL.
Thom Bell: You actually own the Fatboy Slim remix of "Are You Ready for Love". It's on that pink CD single you own.
21 at 33: Yeah, there are some real gems there. I'd say "Conquer the Sun" is my favourite.
Reg Strikes Back: One of my favourite Elton stories involves this auction. Sotheby's Auction House, who conducted the auction, had spent a couple of weeks cataloguing and moving most of Elton's possessions. One night, Elton went to take a bath, and found out that Sotheby's had taken his soap dish in error. He called them and demanded that they bring it back LOL.
USSR '79 Shows: While it's cool that they released the show for RSD, It's disappointing that they didn't include all of the tracks. I have a bootleg copy on CD of the entire show, but unfortunately, it's started to become scratched over the years. I used to won a VHS copy of To Russia with Elton, but I got rid of it since I don't have a VHS player anymore, and honestly, you can find most of that stuff on RUclips these days anyway.
Lestat Demos: No, I haven't heard them. I should check them out.

I always enjoy at least half of each of his (uncountable) albuns .Most, more than half. Except "Victim of Love", that is completelly bad - I pretend this one doesn´t exist. His 80s are the weakest because of the production manly - but I LOVE his hits of the 80´s and many great hidden gems. If he had released half of albuns he would only have perfect ones, but I like the albuns the way they are. Queen later albuns have the same caracteristic: At the same albuns they go from geniality to "wtf" fillers, but its like part of their charm. Peter Hammil is another artist I love that have uncountable albuns ( and not one single hit)

I actually love the B-side Love So Cold. It's a really catchy song though lyrically quite sad. Hey Papa Legba also is quite good. Many of his B-sides are quite good and some are great. Sick City should have been included on Caribou as its better than most of the songs on the album. I believe his remake of the Lennon song One Day at a Time is from those sessions also.
The Cat Stevens duet is called Honey Man which is different from Honey Roll from the Friends soundtrack. I think the Cat Stevens duet is on Cat's box set.
The ultimate rarity for any Elton John fan is the original pressing of the denim-like cover of Madman Across the Water.
I also wonder if somewhere there's a demo version of the Rumour that he wrote for Olivia Newton-John. He plays and sings on Olivia's version but would be nice to hear his demo. Same with Snookeroo written for Ringo.

Not really a fan of Empty Sky, but I may pick it up someday unless it goes out of print, and Greatest Hits Vol 1 was redundant as all the songs were on the other CDs, unlike Vol 2. Love captain Fantastic, Goodbye yellow Brick road and Don't Shoot me and even rock of the Westies. 80's-I love the first 4 albums and then it got worse starting with Ice on Fire but it was still ok. It makes a difference to me because thiers so much tweeking that gets done in the studio even I, with limited vocal ability and range can sound great with the right song and producer.

The Big Picture is one of my most favorite albums. Kinda dark atmosphere, great lyrics, brilliant and complex melodies. Not really a bad song on the album. 'Live Like Horses' is masterpiece. People (fans mostly) don't like it simply because it is polished ballad-pop album. They don't understand the brilliance of songs because they are more obsessed with form than substance. Old fans would probably want Elton to release 'Tumbleweed Connection' album every year, but that never happaned and thank god for that. If Elton would listen to his fans he would become boring and unimportant even during early 70's. 'The Big Picture' is way more inspired than tepid 'Wonderful Crazy Night' album for example. Sometimes we have to listen to music without prejudices.

    • @seangraham9266

If you are talking about the live recordings themselves, I was hoping for the same thing for a long time but it seems like the Record Store Day re-release in 2017 (called 11-17-70+) finally included all songs from the set. I talk about it at 43:20 in the video. It sounds fantastic so I recommend picking it up if you haven't already. Now, if you're talking about concert footage....I am holding out hope that we'll see this full concert footage at some point along with the string of shows he did at the Troubadour to kick off his rise to superstardom. I'd also love to see a deluxe release of the two shows he did at Dodger stadium in 1975. I want that concert footage with a full on documentary plus a remastered release of the tunes themselves. I’d say I’ve all the CD albums up to recently. I’ve the vinyl up to 1991.
The 70s stuff is essential, especially those produced by Gus Dudgeon. Then by 1984 it goes downhill until Sleeping With The Past which is strong but The One is not great. I dislike the production by Chris Thomas. Made in England is great again with excellent production by Greg Penny, then the Big Picture takes a dip again. It’s hit or miss after that.
Ed Sheeran in the same sentence as Elton John is bad language or blasphemy in my book!!!
