basically a load of meaningless jargon. its just a flipping server that stores ans hosts files. some of these files are executable can run on the server but input and output data onto remote machines which are connected to this server. in the older days this was done on a LAN but with faster internet speeds, wifi, and faster computers it has been possible to do this on a wider scale to the point where it can be done via a web beowser over the internet rather than on a smaller private network. Im sure microsoft, apple, IBM, SUN, google, etc all have their own jargon for what they call everything but thats not important

Then later you mentioned that on the same profile there is a Deployment Manager too. My question is, how can the profile having applications belong to Deployment Manager ? As much as I know a Deployment Manager profile does not have applications installed on it. Please clarify and correct me if I am wrong.
Atul, I think you are correct. Page 12 of WAS Administration says (www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg248056.pdf), "The profile defines the application server, node, and cell." I drew it backwards--as if the cell defines the profile, whereas the file structure shows the correct layout (e.g., /opt/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/profiles/DMProfile/cells/CoreCell/applications/cfm_solution_ear.ear). On page 60, you see the 4 things that a default deployment manager profile creates, where the fourth one is "No application servers."
