Another really important method for me is to check out other drummers and transcribe solos/songs or whatever and, if it is a song, playing along to it. That keeps you having fun and sometimes you dive into new styles of playing/new chops/new licks or whatever that you might have never come up with, by yourself. The next step after transcribing/checking something out, for me, is changing it up and adding a little bit of your own style and make it your own.
Lesson one is just amazing. Been doing this since high school drumline. Funny thing is that this formula can be applied to just about everything. Anything music, diet, work out routines, finances, and personal leadership development skills. Truth\m/
This video is GOLD! This is the approach I've taken to playing guitar (I've been playing for 17 years) and it is SO effective. I'm definitely going to apply it to drums, too! Thank you for making this video, man!
I (often) will pick a rudiment for a week, and a fill/groove. Then, focus on just perfecting that one rudiment and fill/groove that entire week. Thanks for the video man!
I love your videos man im also a drummer i started 2 years ago beacuse of you i found your channel and how you explain what to do is wy easer to learn as a biginer than drumeo when you more advanced like i am now it more esaer to understand but i just wanted to say thanks for making drums easier
Great video Gabe! I myself am an organized “practicer” as I find I get a lot more accomplished going into a practice session knowing what I want to get out of it. Which one would you be? Keep up the killer work man, this video, the edits, and everything is on point! Cheers!
Hey Gabe I just got a drumset and I am new to drumming. I have heard a lot about tuning your drums. I was wondering how you actually do that. I want to get the best sounding drums possible. Thanks for the video!
Hey Jonni! I actually have an entire course on tuning. It will be available on my upcoming memberships, but you can get a free lesson every week if you head over to www.drumbeatsonline.com
I really like to focus on 1 or 2 things that I want to get better at, and then really drill them. Also at the end of each of my practicing time I like to jam out to song music!!. Thanks for this video, it is really encouraging!
I like the idea of using a stopwatch when practicing. If I have a couple hours to practice, sometimes I’ll use a timer to break it up into 30 minute segments. It adds structure and helps me focus on what I am doing. P.S. Killer playing segment at the end of the video!
What about leaning an entire album and playing along with it? I did that for years and it was fun to change my kit. Like go from single to double bass or go from a 6 piece to a 4 piece kit while playing the same songs.
Good day sir,am thankful 4 your help 2wards me,d 1 2 3 4 am blessed through that ,i often use it in many occasions, sir may god bless you, even as am blessed by your online training with out payment, am really greatfull .
I think my practice method is best described as a blend of "explore" and "distracted". I may have to try a year of chops though, I bet that would be wicked. You should do a series of videos where you pick a skill and work on it for a year. Then edit it all into a video with time -apse and/or a Rocky II training montage, so we can see the progress. Sorta like Adam Tuminaro does with his "X Years of Drumming" videos (except he doesn't have a sweet training montage). It's easy to watch videos of drummers on RUclips or Instagram and think to yourself "yeah that guy is awesome he's probably been playing for 20 years, I'll never be that good." But seeing some of those progress videos really helps bring those skills into perspective and that anybody can get better if they just put in the time and consistency.
Since you're new to drums (judging from your other comment) probably try to get some paiste PST 5 / 7 / 8; sabian B8 / Sbr; Zildjian ZBT. Those series are good for begginers, they're cheap but sound decent. I prefer the Paiste cymbals, but maybe get a ZBT or a B8 fir hihats and ride. Choose whatever sound you prefer, or what you can afford.
Tbh get some cheaper cymbals cuz you are just starting out and over time you’ll know a little more about the sound YOU want Everyone has a different sounds they would prefer, also sometimes its expensive just to get realllyyyyy good cymbals in the beginning cuz u already are buying a kit with it Go with cheap cymbals in the beginning and explore what kind of sound you are looking for
It's discouraging sometimes I'm almost 40 work nights and a dad there's no time I'm too old and instead of going to school or doing something constructive this is how I spend my precious time all while knowing it's never going anywhere but I love it that much check out some of my low budget covers
Oh man that’s a tricky question. A lot of it comes down to tuning and heads. I would almost invest in a solid snare first. Like maybe look for just a 3 piece kit with a 12” rack, 16” floor, and 22” kick. See if you can get a setup like that for like 600 and something like a Ludwig supraphonic for 400. Or an acrolite if you still want a great snare for a cheaper price. Then maybe the split could be like $800 on a kit and $200 on the snare. Those would be my thoughts, hope that helps!
Dude I really wanna start getting good it’s ridiculous one day I just started to sooo much Linkin Park music and I just went along with the drum parts in my head then started using my hands to just pretend I was the drummer lol I started really listening to more and more linkin park music from a lot of things going on then I got my hands on some drumsticks and I’m trying my best to go along with the beats of songs clearly I suck but I really wanna become a drummer wish I could sit down and you could give me a lesson lol
I always get distracted and end up jamming the same beats and fills I always do just try to play 30 mins a day first ten do 1 minute rudiments second ten play basic sub divisions around kit singles against singles doubles against doubles triples against triples try to do rolls between hand and foot last ten just jam but try not to do the things that your already doing !!!!

Oh yeah , that’s a great one too! I do this also.
Wish I had that shelf of cymbals 😍
Who else turned this into a 12 minute video by repeating over and over and over the 25 seconds of shredding at the end?? Eargasmic
Hey it’s been years since I watch your first videos and I’m really grateful for everything I learned from you. 😊
My man listened to my suggestion. You're the best Gabe!! 🔥🔥

I mix every method except the third one. Great video btw!
tnx sir
Mainly the explore and creative practice methods.
Those are great ones!
I really like to focus on 1 or 2 things that I want to get better at, and then really drill them. Also at the end of each of my practicing time I like to jam out to song music!!. Thanks for this video, it is really encouraging!
That’s so great! I always love to end my practice time with just having fun behind the kit. My pleasure dude!
