My idea for the girl at the bar transition was this: she goes outside, is looking at her reflection not in the window, but a puddle in the gutter. She’s wallowing in self pity. A car is speeding by, we see the fear in her eyes as it’s about to barrel into the water and splash her. The car gets closer and closer, and just as it hits the water, MATCH CUT to her splashing water in her face in her home bathroom. It’s morning time and birds are chirping. Here we have a nice match cut of water -> water, also we go from reflection in the puddle -> reflection in the bathroom mirror. It also has contrast in that it goes from night time, the misery of the night topped off with more misfortune, to the water now representing a fresh start as part of a quiet, new day. 👍🏽
@@Evan-tp7ur cliche, yes, but important for the economics of storytelling and the more you can say with less, the better, that is, if you have alot to say to begin with which I think with this assumed character does
Oh wow, I didn't realize I got a few replies, thank you very much. Honestly, I really think I got in!!! They seemed interested in what I was doing, I answered questions correctly, I didn't forget my monologue.... in 2-3 weeks, they will send me an email to let me know if I got in! I hope I do!
A more on-the-nose but relatable cut could be her looking at her reflection in the glass to her in her pj’s the next morning putting on the creams and serums of her skincare routine in the bathroom. Could turn that into a match cut from reflection to reflection, but taking that second shot out of her first person perspective feels like a softer approach. Or you could switch which shot is in first person perspective. Might even be stronger if we’re watching her in the night shot and we are her in the day shot.
As you asked me to pause and think about the transition, I did and here is what i thought - After being unable to impress the boy who was flirting with her at the bar, The scene cuts to day, where the protagnist is at the zebra crossing, waiting for the vehicles to pass. Beside her on the left is a couple, merrily talking to each other, as the protagnist shares a greedy and defeated glance. As the signal turns green, an old lady on the left asks her if she could help her crossing the road. The protagnist unwillingly, staring uncomfortablly at the lady's wrinkled face, helps her to cross the road. This is what came to my mind, Helpful video btw!!!
this dudes videos are so informative its not just camera reviews like every other RUclipsr does, this guy teaches you how to be a professional cinematographer great work, you earned yourself a subscriber
This is also a helpful thing to learn as a writer! So when you’re writing a scene and you build in a match cut it’ll be helpful for the reader and could potentially be beneficial for the director. Especially if you are the writer AND director. Thank you for the video!
Dude the Me Myself And Irene match cut was literally in my head and I was just waiting for you to mention it. I literally had a chuckle when it came up in the video
Thanks for this, I appreciate your perspective on cutting for story and cutting for engagement. Working out the focus for my channel has me pondering these exact questions 🙌
She's staring into her reflection in the window, she smiles, then it match cuts to the flawless smile of a model's face printed on the label of the new beauty product she just brought.
Your videos are being very helpful to me! I've quit my delivery job to focus on my newly gotten video editor job. From what I see, I've always applied some of the great techniques Hollywood editors use and didn't even noticed that. Sometimes the simpler can be the better.
I saw the tire hitting the camera transition in Season 2 of Breaking Bad yesterday! I was like "when is it going to fall over?", but it just kept rolling until it hit the camera. Loved it!
Thank you so much for this video. I feel like transitions are one of the things I really struggle with currently in my filmmaker journey. I'll definitely come back to this video later.
Hey would you mind explaining what / how you do the animated writing or drawing at 0:52 ? I’ve always wanted to get some sort of iPad or surface that I could write on for educational videos then overlay them as a green screen per day onto my video layer, I just have absolutely no clue how!
Hey Kent - been following you for a couple of months now and haven't commented before. I just wanna say you've become one of my favorite RUclips channels on filmmaking and your content is always well-thought-out and informative. Just wanted to take a minute to say "great job and keep up the good work."
I have been watching your films for a while now and man... You are an inspiration, keep doing your excellent work, thanks to you I still want to learn new things about filmmaking. Can't wait to see your another short film!
the moment i hit like was when the pokemon reference slithered out your ear. absolutely you did not have to do that. A+. then by the end of the thing near where you're about to tell me about your sponsor, i spot your clock up-up & to the right of the frame and i say: incredible. i want that thing. incredible. ende.
I always loved that breaking bad scene where they are at the lab mopping some blood from the floor and transitions to somebody smearing ketchup on a plate with a fry at a restaurant
Dude, your videos have been helping me out so much. It also is giving me more courage to actual begin making my first short film. Keep the videos coming, man! Love your work btw.
great video thank you. before since i watched your channle i had allways wanted to make a short film but didn't know what to do. Then i found your channle . It has helped me to make my film get the right gear and write my scrip. thank you for making thise videos because they really do help people like me.
Most profound match cut was Saving private Ryan when you think the match cut is now him old and at the cemetery, but then realize that it was Ryan who was saved.
The best directors are or were usually great editors. You do an excellent job of emphasizing the language of film and the power of editing to enhance visual story telling! Wit and intelligence - So glad I found the gift that is your channel! Cut from happy face getting a tan on the beach lifting beer to mouth to snowball in the face!
my first thought was to show the character looking at their reflection but the camera is inside the bar still. With all that noise going. But to show the character was looking at their reflection instead of the people in the bar is the next shot is of the character looking at themselves in a mirror the next morning with the powerful silence.
This is an excellent video which helped me to put names to things that I subconsciously knew but didn't know how to articulate. I also liked how you inserted the advert which you made interesting and I actually watched it without skipping. It would be nice if you could mention if there are any potential copyright issues using the platform that you advertised. Thanks in advance.
Hi Kent! Your video editing tutorials are amazing! They’ve helped me out so much! Do you have any shortcuts for masking each frame? It can be extremely time consuming.
I just keep thinking of that Simpsons episode where Lisa is helping Homer make a video on his computer and he kept using Star Wipes as a transition. Man that's so late 90s early 2000's sounding now. Lol
As she looks at her reflection (dark, neon, nightlight) a loud street noise happens and audio blends with loud ice being dumped into her sink in a Mommy Dearest, stay young looking very aggressive beauty routine. (bright, clinical lighting)
@StandardStoryCompany the scene match cut idea I had in mind: with the woman rebuking the guy’s interest. She walks out of the loud bar into the streets, catching her reflection in a store front window- Match Cut To: An seventy three year old staring blankly at her bathroom before she continues her laborious morning routine. Lost in isolation…and no one to share her life with
You cover a lot of different things on your channel which is awesome. I think you should look into covering the films of Shaun Rose. He's a no-budget filmmaker who directs, writes, acts, edits and I think he does the DP work too. He did one called Upstate Story and another called Toga. His stuff is pretty solid and he said in podcasts that he had a stroke while making one. very interesting.
My version: She walks out the bar and looks at her reflection in the glass. Cut to: Her 95yr old face as she lies dead in a nursing home bed, her eyes rolled back, oxygen line in her nose and the heart monitor sounds her flat lined. A white sheet is pulled over her face. Fade to black and roll credits.
I was just watching the video that you made on how to get into film festivals, and you said that you might make a video on how to cast and find notable actors to be in your short films. Is this still a video you would be willing to make because that could be a great subject to learn on
Hey Kent, I know this isn't the ideal place to maybe look for work but If I don't try I wont know right? I'm looking to some work as an assistant editor or video editor. I currently relocated to New York City to pursue this career of mine but so far no luck. I would love to chat with you and would love to get some recommendations to look for work.

Bro that’s amazing!!!!
I really like it too, but I think the whole puddle thing even though nice to tell the story is a bit cliche right?
@@oskarneftel3756 yeah I guess, I think characters looking at their reflection to signify emotion in general is pretty cliche tho
brilliant story telling!
@@Evan-tp7ur cliche, yes, but important for the economics of storytelling and the more you can say with less, the better, that is, if you have alot to say to begin with which I think with this assumed character does
I have an audition for a performing arts school next month, and I decided that I should make a short film to show them- thanks to you, I know how to!
Please share it!
Hello! Good luck to you! And yes, please show it, we'd love to support!
How did it go?
oh no

Same, weirdly
the me myself and irene match cut is forever stamped into my brain. Always knew that movie was special, even as a kid.

In a video about transitions, I find the smoothest transition to a sponsor ever. Bravo.

I love it when another artistic medium is shown to have relvence ,cross over appeal if you like. 5 degrees of separation artistically too.
I love this channel and all of its wonderful lessons. I've learned so much, and it is always so fun to go out and use these tips when shooting.

Just the comment on thinking of cuts as negative space in images has actually opened up a new dimension in my noggin

If you've watched The Dark Knight, that film has a TON of contrast cuts and it fits very well!

for a second I thought this was going to be catered towards the editor but this is really for the director if they know what they want
I'm a sucker for a good ol fashion match cut.
