DUTCH SUPERMARKET visit - GROCERIES in the NETHERLANDS [Ep. 72]

  • One of our favourite things about visiting a new country is seeing what their supermarkets are like. I know this probably isn’t the first thing you think of when travelling. But you feel like you know a country once you start enjoying various parts of its cuisine. And once you know the cuisine, you can start to look for it in the supermarket.
A Dutch supermarket isn’t that different from a supermarket in NZ. But they have some Dutch specialities which we always look forward to.
Stroopwafels are syrup waffles that you usually have with a coffee or tea. You put them over the steaming cup to melt the syrup first, before eating them. Another thing we enjoy (but not too often!) is the chocolate muesli, It’s obviously not very healthy, so I generally only have it on occasion.
Dutch are famous for their cheese. And since Gouda is only about 10min away from where we’re staying, there’s an abundance of Gouda cheese. It’s basically the normal cheese here, and very cheap. They also have a lot of cinnamon related delicacies, especially their speculaas which are biscuits, usually in the shape of a windmill.
I have to admit, the Dutch diet doesn’t look to be the healthiest. A lot of their products are pre-packaged and processed. And they really like their sugar. It’s lucky that they do so much cycling here to burn it off!
Aside from various sweet items, Holland doesn’t have a particular type of cuisine, they tend to adopt food from other countries in Europe and further afield. They got a lot of ideas from Indonesia when it used to be a colony. So it does mean you can find a wide variety of food and ingredients in their grocery stores.

There's something special about grocery stores, they really show the character of a country, and similarly of those visiting it.
Re: small fridges, I think most Dutch (and Europeans in general) do groceries way more frequently. Like I go at least 3 times a week. Which for smaller families also means it can be done with just pannier bags rather than needing a bakfiets. And people really drink way more fresh milk, UHT milk is mostly for backup.
But there's no single right way, do whatever you're comfortable with. AFAIK more country-side oriented families often only do weekly.

      @breetventures  Год назад +1

Thanks for the comment :) Wow, 3 times a week is much more often than in NZ. We usually do 1 a week. But our ones in NZ (even in the cities) are usually further away. And the closer, smaller ones in NZ are much more expensive. It makes sense in NL, you can just pop past on your bike and put them in panniers. Probably a nicer way to do it! And you get your exercise at the same time.

@@breetventures Yeah. And you often do it when coming back from work, or whatever you were doing, so it doesn't take an extra ride.

@@breetventures I moved away as a Dutchie 12 years ago but back in Holland I used to go to Albert Heijn almost every day just to get the stuff I needed for dinner that night. For most people there the supermarket is only 5 minutes away and usually not even an extra trip on the way home. Definitely no need for a big fridge then.
Great to see you're enjoying yourselves there. Not sure how much time you get to spend there. Perhaps take the kids out for cycling and teach them the rules. You're in the world's number one cycling country. We grow up cycling and often already go alone from the age of 8. Car drivers are used to it and the cycling infrastructure as you probably know by now is outstanding.

@@moladiver6817 Thanks for that :) We've been back and forth in Holland now for about 9 months. So really getting to know the country. The kids are slowly getting used to cycling here now, but still a bit daunting for them since they didn't grow up here. I'm amazed at how confident the Dutch kids are, really nice to see so many people cycling. Something the rest of the world can learn from!

Nice to see you're enjoying yourselves in my country. I moved away some 12 years ago but these are the things I miss. Easily accessible efficient supermarkets everywhere that have everything you need. The other thing is proper infrastructure.
Do you know the channel Not Just Bikes? It's quite amazing and you might relate to this particular video:

One thing you forgot, is that the cauliflower, pretty much as any fresh vegetable and fruits, need to bagged in a plastic or paperbag, next to where you find them. Than you need to put them on a scale tat prints the price tag. This is so it can be scanned, when you pay.
The white venco licorice you put in, we call chalk (krijt), as it reminds people of the old school black boards. :D

I might even have seen you. Must have been 1 or 2 weeks ago. Usually I have blue or black jacket/coat. I prefer the taste from Jumbo over the taste of Albert Heijn. And yes, Jumbo is pretty much the only one that accepts credit cards. The others are German store (Aldi, and, Lidl). They are a bit closer to you, next to the place called binnenhof (in Rotterdam Ommoord. They also have good parking space. Dirk might accept credit card, but I am not 100% sure. They are on the right slightly before the metro traffic lights. (When you drive towards the Jumbo).

@@breetventures I find the dutch food, always much healthier than for example in Germany. When i buy food there in the supermarkets, their stuff is always fatish, meat isnt that super compared to our cow meat. etc. But our goverment have to stop with these idiot prices. Not normal anymore. I remember buying 1KG cheese for 4.50 euro a few years ago. Now they are almost 10.50.

Prices have gone crazy haven't they. I noticed in France they're required to put a list up outside their supermarket for all the prices of the basic needs. Like milk, cheese, bread, meat etc. So it's easy to compare. And I guess the government controls the prices of the basics too.

      they are called kokindjes .
Kokindjes are made from the juice of licorice root, chamomile, sage and gentian,
