I've worked at a print shop as a temp when I was in college, and the reason why printing one or two copies is expensive is because there is a pretty complex setup process they have to go through and then they run some comps to make sure the press will run correctly. You're paying for the time the operator spends setting up the press. They run your two books, and they have to recallibrate the machine to run someone else's order. So, physical samples are always going to be expensive.
For the dark colors, I also had this issue and it's not the fault of the printer probably. When looking at the screen colors seem a lot brighter, so you should check the level of black in your colors when preparing the file. We tend to add too much black especially with night scenes. Regarding the profit, printing one copy is obviously going to be extremely expensive, the only way is to print lots of copies from a good printer. The more copies you print the less the price is going to be. The problem is you need is going to be a gamble, if you don't sell any copy you lose the money you invest...
Have you thought about a hardcover version? It's only a few dollars more I think. Also, once you start moving many copies, the costs on places like Mixam go way down.

That makes total sense. Thanks for sharing this! Not many people know the actual process behind the printing business.

YES - The hardcover version is definitely on my mind! Hopefully when conventions are a thing again I want to give it a try.
