Fast Solar Wind, a Mini-Solar Storm, and a Whole Lot of Flaring | Space Weather News 24 April 2024

This week our Sun decides to show us how busy things can get during solar maximum. We have 18 sunspot clusters in Earth-view, including multiple big-flare players that are making a lot of noise on the dayside radio bands. Luckily, the numerous radio blackouts are mostly short-lived and only at the R1-level so they are more a minor inconvenience than anything. Radio flux has also topped the 200s again (with a peak over 250! for a short while), which means radio propagation is good, even on the nightside, but GPS users at low latitudes might find this high level causes more reception issues, especially in the afternoon and early evenings. As far as storming goes, we are expecting some fast solar wind along with a partially Earth-directed solar storm coming over the next few days, which will give aurora photographers some aurora to smile about, especially at high latitudes. @@TamithaSkov It would be really cool to see the inside of the SWPC. I got to tour the NWS in Norman and the SPC next door when I lived in Oklahoma. I've loved studying about earth weather so much that I decided to try and understand more about space weather. Apples and oranges difference to me. I need to finish watching your classes to see what else I can drive into my head.

I've never heard solar this solar that when it came to storms growing up.
What a great forecast. My HF-using friends are grumbling about blackouts so a calmer sun should cheer them up.
First time here. A weather girl that specializes in solar activity. Lol. Subscribed
I am affected daily by space weather and geomagnetic disturbance. My system is hypersensitive due to preexisting condition, so I am one of the estimated 10% of people affected. Please mention heliobiology more often. The effects are not small. A G1 storm can increase human blood viscosity up to 20%. We are bioelectric. I feel (and hear) the radio blackout preceding the inbound G2 storm 24 hours before it arrives, even here in mid-latitude...

Hi Tamitha thanks for the solar whether forcast, 1 question there is a huge sand storm from the Sahara covering southern Greece Crete Cuprus and a big area around the middle east, is this caused from solar wind?

As solar winds and such pass over the earths magnetic field, does the field flucuate? Would that flucuation be the same concept as motion-field-current in electrical terms? The solar winds would induce a greater magnetic field strenth as they passed increasing the Earth's magnetic field.
