Looking for ANTIQUES and CURIOSITIES at Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil - Journey to the Château, Ep. 111

- In this week's Friday episode, Patrick and Stuart show some of their recent trips and purchases at local brocantes (French antiques flea market), one of which was at the Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil. The 14th-century medieval castle which combines Flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance style architecture hosts an annual event called "le Salon des Curiosités" (the Curiosities Fair).
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château or castle in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

HI Patrick & Stuart, I'd like to be able to follow you to a Brocante when we are finally settled in France. I love shopping for antiques, I noticed a couple of pieces of St. Louis Crystal, the tall Ewer was beautiful at the show you were visiting. The blue vase was lovely. I'm a big fan of Royal Copenhagen Blue Flower and I have collected a dinner service for 36 which I have used annually for our Passover dinner, and like other china patterns it goes in the dishwasher. Thank goodness. Mark & Scott

Happy Birthday Celebrations to you both. Happy Birthday to me today. I am 63 today and feeling much better. We had a lovely visit from my brother and wife from Labrador. They took the train across Canada ending in Vancouver. They stayed a week with us. We did so much. The best was a gondola up a mountain with ocean view. Great restaurant and gift shop on top of the mountain and below it. All are wheelchair accessible, which is awesome for those that need it. They slow the gondola down or stop for people to get on. I loved it. We took them to the famous Davie Street, then to Stanley Park and the Totem poles. We walked the longest peir in Canada in White Rock. I am sure I gained 10 pounds with all the great food. Pat and I are going to our favorite sushi restaurant tonight. It is a lovely hot day here today.
That was great brocanting and shopping. Those rugs are beautiful. The chandelier looks amazing. I look forward to meeting your guest friends. Isn't it awesome to have guests who volunteer to work. My brother and wife did a lot to help us out. He is very good at carpentry and fixed many little things inside and outside. Stuart, you should get that guy to make a rug from your toile.

OMG I have the exact same knife rests and they are French. I have a silver set which I have collected over the last 10-15 years and have 27 pieces per place setting. I don't think I will ever use all the pieces LOL. Never for one meal even if it was a ten course dinner! I know what you mean- here in California I look for a certain Italian bowl that is top of the thrift store list - I have found 2. Lol I see it often enough on their videos. I think I would have to bring an empty suitcase if I visited! Dangerous 😂

We're experiencing serious flooding here in Vermont. The rivers are overflowing after heavy rains and thunderstorms. Our town has lost it's only grocery store 😢 post office, town offices, farms a nd several local businesses. Many other areas of the state have serious damage...kayakers in the streets of Montpelier, the Capital. Maybe it's "the hundred year flood", worst since '27😢 My house is high and dry, but so many friends and neighbors are hard hit. So nice to go treasure hunting with you guys, break from the recovery efforts. And just seeing handsome Patrick in that hat was a treat😊 Love to you from hot, soggy VT.❤

I rewatched this as I knew I had seen the Chateau de-Ainay le vieil but didn’t know where. Then it hit me, this was the background for the Antiques Roadshow . They toured Europe and shot the show and the insides and also had people bring their own antiques to be evaluated. What fun you must have had.

I have the same problem with languages - I’m looking for a word and it will pop into my head in every language I know, except the one I need! Heh, if I’m switching languages often (in a group with no single shared language), even the word in my own native language might fail to show up! 🤣
They have something similar to knife rests in Japan, but of course they’re chopstick rests. They come in a huge variety of shapes and designs - I have so many I couldn’t resist buying. 😁 And because things come in sets of five, and it’s traditional to mix sets when setting a table, I can do combos on the dining table. ♥️

If you want to see the chopstick rests, look up “hashi oki” (which translates as “bridge”). 🙂
You’ll see painfully cute ones (because it’s Japan 😉), but also stunningly elegant ones.
When you see a set of four, that is being sold by a non-asian-owned company, because four is a bad-luck number. You’ll never see a set of four of anything sold in Japan. I didn’t know that at first, and wondered why some shops in my relatively small non-tourist town would give me a small extra thing when I was first buying dishes, etc.
It’s funny, because I lived there for years, when I see that (for Japanese things), it gives me the creeps! I didn’t know that until I checked what a search would bring up. 🤣

I seem to have missed so much and out of sequence with your Vlogs! There has been a horrific virus sweep through here that simply drains all energy. It is not COVIT, but hell I have never spent days in bed before so weakened. 14 hours at a time in bed exhausted!!! But today I wake and although weak, I feel I have turned a corner and am on the mend.

Patrick, my Grandson Harper just turned 12 years old this Wednesday -8July My sister in the UK had a birthday on Tuesday -11th July And my beautiful son Ian 😢 who sadly passed away suddenly after recovering from Covid last October 2022 his birthday was - 12th July which my family & I celebrated his birthday together !

Good morning Patrick & Stuart, you are looking so good, relaxed, happy and ready for the day. It is a lovely video, lots of good news, and the visit to the grand, the very grand chateau was most enjoyable. The goods on sale were very classy. Loved the cutlery, and the square glass box with the crystal inside. I am sure I would have been tempted to buy a few items that were on display. Those table cutlery holders, I am sure I have read those are collectables. They are available in silver, brass, bone china, ivory (very scarce) and Perspex. I absolutely more than just love them, they complete a table setting. We just leave our knives or forks on the side plate, and the table covering is exquisite. The broidery work is just something else!! I hope the weather is in your favour for the dinner, it would be most enjoyable. We had one terrible hail storm here years ago, like golf balls, people decorated outside, put up marquis, it all came down with the heavy hail storm. Our garden was immaculate all ready for the big day December 25th, not a leaf on the ground it was perfect. I saw this black cloud bank but just looked and at 7 pm all hell broke loose. On Christmas day there was only stalks on the trees, the rose trees had been slashed, the pathway was laden with leaves and our spirits were down in the complete neighbourhood. It was a disgusting experience. I wish you all the best for beautiful weather, a great day and happy cooking and baking. Only the best wishes for celebrating. Many blessings, kind regards. Oh my, that rug beater brings back memories. We had one made of rattan when I was young living on a dairy farm. I remember hanging the back door rug on the clothesline and beating it like crazy. I also remember my Mom visiting the older neighborhood ladies who had real rugs on the fancy dining room table. Really nice thick rugs with Dutch scenery on them. I'm second generation Dutch living in America, but we had a small Dutch community that I grew up in. Love your videos guys!😊 (The rugs came off when the table was used) 😂
