  • How well does your dog respond to your cues at a distance? Would your dog sit or down when they are off leash and far away? It’s a skill that can be life saving for dogs! It only needs a few minutes a day of engagement with your dog to create great behaviors, and it starts with your dog listening to you when they are close.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    • That a dog responding from a distance is just showing mastery of skills that they can do close up.
    • How to find time in your day to train your dog and how it can be engaging.
    • What your dog understanding of a cue looks like in day-to-day life.
    • About cleaning up your release cues and the releases that I use.
    • What to be aware of about cueing, marking, and releasing to create clarity for your dog.
    • Why we need transfer of value to the behaviour of sit, down or stand for our dogs.
    • About the experiment we conducted at agility camp and what the results showed about cues at a distance.
    • Why dogs who understand a behaviour close to you can perform at a distance.

Susan thanks so much for all you are doing for our community! You didn’t say it in this video but in many others you say something like “just 3 minutes a day” - which I now find hilarious. How could anyone play these games and not be addicted that it consumes WAY more than three minutes! You sure know how to hook us ;)

Hi these podcasts are so good for me (to be a better person!) & my dogs, thank you xxxx I was wondering if it would be possible to do a podcast on Extinction, or maybe point me in the right direction, the question I have is about letting extinction happen & then adding the cue - how does that work? what is the science? many thanks, Sioban

LOL i am probably the only person who messes up STAND - 'thought' i was following along with video but i significantly miscommunicated with my cardi! When i say STAND he energetically does the 'pop up' then he is done. And he is quite proud of his stellar performance! note it does make me chuckle so maybe that was his goal!

I have been training my 2 year old show dog to do obedience exercises. Send aways are growing distance now I got the idea. Still struggling though with the sit, down, stand at a distance. I use my body a lot. Thinking of a straight jacket maybe, for me not the dog, joking anyway, how do I get myself to stop throwing in these que markers and use my voice. I want the snappy stand please :D

I have a 23 month coonhound training to be my Mobility Assistance Service Dog; could you do a video to help train "Brace" & "Pull" sometime, or is it too specialized? The work is beginning… we had dogs all our life but the 1st time to experience reactivity in our dog… the only positive thing about it is to learn about training in a more professional and competent way… it is becoming a passion with ups and downs but confidence we will make it!

I subscribe to your training programs as well, but it's so nice to have these episodes pop up in my podcast and RUclips feed. It's the engagement I need from time to time to take a moment from my day to reflect on what you've said and my dog training. I appreciate you and, your staff, and your dogs. Thank you, Susan.

Thanks Susan for once again bringing us clarity. I know I am guilty of extraneous body movements and reinforcing too late. I'm surprised that my good dog does as well as he does. Your experiment with distractions versus distance was very interesting. I am going to try it. I will do better! Looking forward to your next podcast.

Love your videos!! I’m wondering if you covered how to help dogs who feel a little territorial. We have a just turned 1 Bernese mountain dog/husky mix. He’s over 80lbs and a bundle of energy. Obviously he brings out family so much joy! Lately though, he’s started getting nippy (not playful but growling and snapping) at a few of our guests. Most ppl he seems fine with but he’s now gotten this way with three different ppl.
