- Exploring Tunja, Colombia: A Walk Around The City + History
Last week, I spent a couple of days in Tunja. I remember passing through the city last year and thought, ¨there is nothing to see there; why should I go?¨
Then I started researching and wanted to check it out. First, I must say that I am not one for big cities and prefer to avoid them at all costs, but since everyone always talks about the other capital cities such as Medellín, Manizales, Bogotá, and I have as well, so I went.
First, I have to preface I have a sweet spot for the region of Boyacá and assumed that I would strongly dislike Tunja and see it as ¨another city¨. Well, it is another city, but wow. The week I went, there was an artisanal market for the local farmers to sell their goods. I saw those natives from the region, basket weaving and turning sheep fur into clothing.
Landmarks to Visit

Boyacá is probably the safest department in Colombia for sure. If you are still around, you should go to Paipa. The hot springs are outstanding.
yess I am headed there this week!!!
The city of Tunja is a paradise to be discovered. The weather is awesome 14-18 degrees Centigrades, people are warm and welcoming.
It is one of my favorite cities in Colombia!!! It's amazing
I've been ro boyacá recently, villa de leyva and sogamoso were my favorite towns near the city of tunja, thanks for your showing us this part of colombia.
that part of colombia is amazing isnt it?
Good to see you back to Colombia!! You are awesome!!
thank you!
Tunja is the safest city in Colombia... Welcome everybody!
It is an amazing city!!!!
TUNJA it's a beautiful city with great architecture, nice weather (not too hot), great cuisine, amazing surroundings, and the best people.
Tunja has been named "COLOMBIAN'S UNIVERSITY CITY" and it is also the SAFEST capital city in Colombia, and indeed, BOYACÁ is like "an oasis" within thr country; it's also my favorite region in the country.
Enjoy Tunja and Boyacá, Sara!!🇸🇷💯🇸🇷💯🇸🇷💯🇸🇷💯🇸🇷💯🇸🇷
it was an incredible city, honestly i was surprised because NO ONE ever mentions it.. but such a cool city.. i wish i stayed longer!
Nice town with modern architecture!!
it was an amazing city
Thank you Sara! I have visited Boyaca before but never Tunja even though I have friends from there. Great video.
Yeah Tunja was soooo nice...but I like ve boyacá!! Thank you:)
To answer your question, street sounds without music is more interesting.
I agree!! Thank you! I only added my music where YT will punish me 😂 they will take my video down with external music and give me a strike.if it's not credited and I usually have no idea what's playing 😂
@@SaraBurdick +1 for street sounds.
Gracias por visitar la ciudad más espectacular de Colombia! Ahora te reto a que hagas otro video en la misma ciudad pero en la parte moderna, que también es muy bonito.
si vuelvo lo haré!
My soul is not right outside of Colombia so your content makes me happy and then I want to come back sooner. The music is good and live sound as well. I know how YT likes to copyright but for most my videos they don’t with Spanish music but depends if its back back ground or if it’s taking over the talking. Sometimes I upload just to see what happens. You can always re upload if they copyright it. Nice video Sara!
I hope your move went well! I will try in the next video!.. this partk was playing boys 2 men!! it was so random.. and i feel the super popular stuff i always get dinged!!! Im still working on monetization so trying to follow the rules..
I’m from Tunja and I’m really proud of my City, As you said, it’s and island in the Colombia’s reality.
It is an amazing place!!!
Good city for retirement ?
Looks beautiful and the temps look perfect for us.
Thx
Yes especially if you are looking for a cooler but not too cold environment. Plus way more affordable than other cities!
Nice video. Thanks for the history lesson! Did some further reading but definitely need to learn more about the region and its native inhabitants.
Also was able to learn names of bakery goods and information about the basket weaving culture. The basket material gaita is a woody bamboo in the grass family found in Mesoamerica. I couldn’t find a direct translation for the plant (so had to look up its Latin name) but it can mean bagpipes and flute which makes sense. It would have been nice to see some of the prices of the baskets! The signs help add to my Spanish vocab. You can see I tend to get into the weeds or maybe I should say gaita!
The large sheet or tarp in the square at ~15 that said Juego de Oca (Game of the Goose) to raise awareness of violence was interesting.
Thanks for pausing at some signs! Would have been great to also see the “territorio” sign with map of the square and Church of San Ignacio sign…
Music or street sounds? Each gives a different vibe for me. Music focuses on the visual background while street sounds more on atmosphere and ambient sounds, even catching some snatches of conversation. Other possibilities are to add snippets of conversions with vendors with a brief recap in English if you don’t want the work of adding subtitles.
oooh you found out so much cool stuff! I would never have thought to google those! So thank you for sharing with me!! I will try to record more of me talking.. i always feel weird recording someone!!
Awesome content Sara❤❤
Thank you 🙏
Loved this, Sara! So hard to choose between the music and the street sounds! :)
Right!! Thank you so much Julie!
I am colombian jews living in Israel I left Colombia as child and still missing the food and the warm people in Sudamérica
I still missing the. arepa con queso The best street food
Awwww I was in Israel last year!! Yesss arepa con queso soooo good:)
In the US, we might say you're a "Jewlombian." Wonderful, cool people!
Colombian and Jewish, the world's two coolest peoples!
Boyaca is the best of Colombia culturally in my opinion and I live here. It also has some beautiful scenery too. Artifacts like those inside La Casa Del Fundador y El Escribano Del Rey are like a trip to Europe.
I love Boyaca! It is one of my favorite regions in Colombia as well, I still want to explore more of it!
One particularity of boyacences, myself included, is that people in general do not like to have debts and as a result, there are no big industrial proyects in the area...and the banks have to move money from deposits to other parts of the counry as soon as they are made.
Ahh ok! I don't like debts either maybe that's why I liked the area
Interesting!
Its a cool.city!
Espero te haya gustado la gastronomía de mi querida ciudad
@@juancarlosduconcastelblanc6458 si me encanta la gastronomía en Tunja!
Did you stay overnight? If so, can you recommend a good hotel? Thanks
Another thing. Too bad there’s so much graffiti. That didn’t bother you much?
I stayed at hotel gold Fenix it was ok...but close to the plaza
There is so much graffiti here in general ..
