- Today, we finish a long journey of case modding that began long before I found this 1989 compact Mac on Craigslist, already painted black with the case chopped up to fit a CD ROM and 1GB Jaz disk drive. Oh, and stick around until the end for a special announcement!
For Peter Parker, it was a radioactive spider. For the four turtles, it was a canister of green goop. For this lowly Macintosh SE/30, it was a fateful encounter with modding culture that led to this, it's near-final form!
After adding a ton of internal mods myself - solid state hard drive, 68040 processor upgrade, modern power supply - today I'm taking the cosmetics to the highest level possible... whether that level is beauty or gaudiness, though, depends on your taste I suppose.
All I know is that I love it, and I think you might too. So join me today in adding a wonderful MacEffects transparent blue case and a tasteful amount of lighting, so that we can all marvel at the heavily upgraded internals of this machine whenever we look at it!

I think the appeal of this series is that it's the opposite of a "proper" restoration, yet you give the "cursed" machine so much dedication and love.
The lights and blue case looks amazing! I hope you add a gray scaler and video card. Push this Mac to the outer limit! :-)
Honestly know the hard work you put into the front panel, and I know how hard it would be to add in the openings on the MacEffects front panel, but I feel like spraying the inside of the MacEffects case black and using that instead is the better way forward than continuing to use the original black front panel.
Regardless, this is an amazing build!
I was initially thinking that too.. but to fit the excess(ive) drives, there was already a lot of body modding done to it. Then he had to "fix" some of those issues when he got the machine. Might not be willing to risk messing up the perfectly good MacEffects front with all the cutting and drilling.
Honestly yes, no matter how I dread the molten front I wouldn’t trust cutting the case to someone who screwed up the original in a first place so I guess I have to swallow that pill.
Totally terrific series, Sean! But - it just bugs me that the Apple sticker is crooked.

Wow! That looks better than i have anticipated! I assumed it to be like the clear case you got but blue, But it seriously is the best transparency! It looks great! I take back my former statement.

I don't think he should stop, it's in the spirit of the creator of this thing to keep modding the piss out of it imo.
Oh - I'd like a blue skull to contrast the black - it's hard to see otherwise.
I still think you should spray the MacEffects front case in black, and use that instead of your melted one.
Spraying it from the inside, so it still has the blue tinge would be a great combination. :D

This computer is always so interesting to me. I really want to know what the original owner did with it, why they made all these modifications, and if they like the way it is now.

Awesome. :D I'd probably pull out all of the metal chassis in the bottom half and give it a coat of chrome spray paint, so it is super mirrory reflective, to see through the case. :D
New M1 iMac's come out before this video..... Cursed mac goes blue. Love this video and your retro perspective.

Not a fan of of the oversized mac sticker and the skull...
This thing is amazing. Next... Try to find a color tube and analog board... Or some sort of video card and mount a modern LCD display in it
I've been following the cursed mac saga from the beginning an am surprised it still struggled a bit with system 8.1 after all of your mods. Everyone knows that RGB makes computers faster!

It would be cool if they made a Mac Classic case too. Although mine is prestine I wouldn't mind to do a transplant and have a clean one on my desk
I'd be more excited if I owned one of these. Being able to mess around with a period accurate DAW with those beefed up speakers would make my day.

You should put the blue front panel on another SE/30 with a white painted back case .
With this color scheme it looks a bit like old arcade game machine. Totally awesome!

I think you should put a blue plastic over the screen to turn it into a blue CRT. I think it would look so cool!

I'm amazed you are collecting so many macs , but you are spending so much money changing those old comps. This is insane but you are having fun ahha
Next mods: Paint the trackball mouse black, and dye the ball blue, put a nice black braided cable on it. Another idea... put a color monitor in it, maybe a color classic screen might work for a swap?
I'm not a fan of the black front, I'd get the transparant front with a white backing together with the blue back to emulate an G3 iMac. Together with removing the front of the JAZ drive and moving it down to the floppy opening and replace the CD ROM with a slotin version that could use one of the slits above the floppy opening, mounting the drive right up against the front you could press the front plastic and the flex could be enough to activate the eject buttons. Would result in a more sleak, toned down casemod that would still turn heads for the SE go iMac design. :D
it would be nice if you also changed the front, or painted it blue
looks like you have a green LED segment dead in one of those RGB LED chips... either bad solder joint or it just died.

I'd like to see you spray the Inside of the Mac effects front black and replace the hot mess of a front cover it currently has.
This thing is coming along really nicely! I have been following since day one, and I'm very impressed! ...What did you go with for a 3D printer? I'm looking to get one sometime in the next 2 or 3 weeks, and there are so many options, I feel a bit overwhelmed.

I tried illuminating an original iMac, using some ccfl tubes out of an old display panel, unfortunately it didn't work out all that well. I'll have to try again with some of this RGB LED strip.
I prefer the old black-painted case, but this one is just as nice.
Please share you STL files so the rest of us can do these mods. The lighting looks awesome and I totally want to do that with my blue MacEffects case!
I know you spent hours to correct that front panel... but now it does not match with the quality of the new blue case. So I guess if you spray paint the front case with the right paint (plastic primer and plastic matte black paint) it will finally look perfect. Also paint the metal frame inside, maybe with black or chrome! More 3D printed parts will help too, like a frame around the drives for a perfect and flush finish.
Jay will be SO PROUD to see your RGB strategy!

I do not know why, probably the light diffusion, but the plastic of that case looks like the same plastic you get with cheap Walmart containers. I think it would look better with an acrylic look instead of looking like a computer in a walmart tub. I love all the other mods tho! It makes this "cursed mac" a lot less cursed
The audio amplifier board might be picking up the faster crt rate. The audio amplifier board might need to be shielded.

Do you have a link how to get the blue case ? It would look cool as a Mac aquarium to go along with my Mac Cube aquarium. I finally hope to finish & put fish in it this year.

Paint the inner metal black
and try to do the same with the motherboard without killing it

Eh, quite the result I have to admit. Now it just needs a smoke generator.
It's easy to turn a computer into a smoke generator, I've done it more times than I wish to admit.

You should remove that oversized Apple logo from the front, as it looks awful. 😁 The black front isn't my cup of tea with the blue case fitted. I would experiment with the new front panel, perhaps using black or dark blue spray paint on the inside to make it translucent, or even opaque, but with the same exterior finish as the rest of the case.
Has the original owner ever contacted you about this Cursed Mac?
I want a Mac case so I can toss a Pi in it. Would also use a CRT display with it.
