  • Raising, Lowering Thumb. Cello lesson with Paul Katz.
    CelloWisdom:
    Keep your left wrist flat; bending your wrist creates tension in your hand and limits finger dexterity.

    It is really hard! I had a trouble like that when I play the Haydn cello concerto in c major. So, thank you for your post. I'll try and keep practice.

    And when I move my hand in the higher positions, will I always use my thumb to immediately play a note with the thumb, or can I also just „move my thumb over the cello-edge“ to make it possible that only the other fingers play?

    I call it the "hump" too.
    The shift to first finger A and then adding the thumb is correct.

    I find a lot of instruction on reaching up to thumb position, (and actually a bit about playing so high its off the fingerboard), but i'm now playing pieces that require 12th and 15th positions (if they even have names-the ones over the 2/3 and 3/4 harmonic length of string) and there's no instruction on these at all which is annoying for me as i can't find a reference point on the cello to use other than the harmonic-which i can't use whilst playing a piece.

    I'm confused because my instructors recommend keeping my elbow up in most playing situations. I'm an adult student of two and a half years.

      Hi Venita, it is actually a recording of Paul Katz playing an excerpt of Ernő Dohnányi's Cello Sonata.

    Total falsch! Total, complete wrong! Абсолютно не правильное движение, изначально предопределяющее ограниченность технического постижения возможностей виолончели. Конечно, Баха, или даже ваш любимый концерт Гайдна(всё равно какой), ну и в оркестре вы так играть сможете. Но серьёзной свободы передвижения, должной техники соединения нот вы не достигните. Может потому и сам профессор, показывая с его точки зрения правильное движение руки, первый раз переход с "g" на "a" играет фальшиво. 11.05.2020. Вена. Проф. Виктор Милосердов.

    why vibrating on scales? :))) that's what amateurs do ;)

    • @indyar8197
      @indyar8197 Год назад +1

      Not true, vibrato can be used to relax the hand because doing vibrato reminds you not to press your thumb against the neck while you’re playing. Vibrato will tell you if your thumb is relaxed and if your hand isn’t tense.
