I've enjoyed binge watching the channel for the last week getting caught up. You have 100% sold me on Battletech and I've taken your advice and picked up the Alpha Strike Starter Set, Commanders Edition, and a few other packs I really liked. The terrain you have created is amazing and I will definitely have to fill my table with it for upcoming projects. I've always respected your view and philosophy on the hobby and I've enjoyed catching back up. Thank you so much for the content and if it wasn't for your videos I would have never of rediscovered Battletech in the way I have. I haven't played since grade 8 and I'm very excited to dive I to Alpha Strike this summer. Very interested to see more about your campaign ideas and cannot wait to share my own. The Battle of Tukayyid really sold me and my hobby juices are flowing. Thank you my friend.
Awesome! I hope it brings you some joy (and nostalgia!). It's a breath of fresh air taking a step back from GW games and getting into something more inviting and casual (imo). Keep us updated on your journey :)
Most of the stuff in Dominion Divided, Tamar rising and Empire alone is stuff like angry mobs, characters and locations. The book I recommend for campaign design is campaign operations the one with the Liao Archer for a cover. Find the Tukayyid source book to be a good template for missions as well.
I've got the Tukayyid one, I'll take a peek at sourcing the Campaign Ops one :)
Cool I just ordered the Tukayyid book with Alpha strike campaigns in mind. Now to find someone to play with....
I am making a custom campaign for alpha strike aces play, I would recommend getting a copy of campaign operations its an excellent start and a good book for ideas
Battle of Tukayyid is a good book with specific campaign advice. It uses the Chaos Campaign system, which we’re also using with Total Chaos for a BattleTech campaign.
There‘s a free pdf Chaos Campaign Succession Wars, if you want to take a look at the system first. Tukayyid has more info on how to use it with Alpha Strike iirc., and comes with custom tracks.
I've got the physical version of the Chaos Campaign Succession was as well, should be able to browse that :)
The old Battletech Alpha Strike Companion book has some info on salvage. Their are some non official alpha strike campaigns out there. One is on the Death from Above Wargaming webpage.
My partner and I are planning a campaign, I was building it while listening to YT in the background, needed a new video, and this comes up on my feed? Weird lol
Hah! Serendipity! :)
I am only for this if I get to come down and game. LOL!
I'm already hooked by just your braindstorming. Campaign Ops and Strategic Ops are thick with campaign and narrative design
I'm actually making a campaign with my own narrative twist. Think dnd with battletech
Starts off with some new pilots trying to do a prison break, but they have to kill all the enemy's in a fixed turn number before an alarm Is raised . It's actually very hard because as gm idk where my opfor is going . I give my pilots character traits 4 base 2 good and 2 bad or neutral then use it for dialog options. Use chat gp for help with story directions and lore I made backstop for my Killable characters and I gave (npc and key characters plot Armour ) out 1st mission we rescued our prisoner from Viborg right off the Aquila rift. During the battle I was in a tight space about to have the enemy escape and raise the alarm and I chose to use my pilots Silver tounge trait ( negotiate ,persuade, or decive ) to do the dialog or narrative option the gm (me rolls a d20 and the player rolls if they win the skill passes ( I used it force the last mech pilot on patrol nearly dead to force dismount and shut down the mech and be captured... he's now a pilot in my roster. I have pre write a script to use.
the best campaign is a gonzo crazy periphery world jumping merc unit. any mech up to 3067AD is allowed. fight pirates, Star League worlds that were settled by Exodus ships that fell out of warp, your mercs are being chased by a group of AI mechs with an AI jumpship.
That sounds like a blast
The leveling system is hardest part then the money out side of that. I made my own way to automate the opposition
campaign play... where to start.
1st - alpha strike is not a good game system for continuing story. primary reason, unit life expectancy. things die very quickly.
2nd - get rid of any ideas of having 'balanced play'. campaigns should have a variety of missions. some easy, some hard and a few impossible. trying to balance forces removes this range of complexity.
3rd - structure for creating initial forces, making repairs, salvage, hiring new/replacement personnel... not that you can't come up with your own system, but several already exist in standard battletech. primarily - c-bills. however, you can use bv points or tonnage.
4th - playing against other players or setting up a 'generic' NPC enemy - that other players control during the missions.
5th - style of campaign. meaning, is this a long play of 30+ missions. or a short story arc of less than 10 missions.
6th - setting the tone. is this in a particular era. open play - everything is available. limited resources. faction specific. within the battletech timeline or not in universe.
7th - number of participants and will there be a dedicated GM.
yes, there are more things to consider. I primarily play standard battletech. for decades, we've conducted planetary invasion campaigns. each campaign lasts about a year playing one day a week. our forces involve everything from warships to the foot soldier and literally everything in between.
for resource management we use c-bills. it's very easy and everything has a price.
as far as setting up scenarios. we use Mechwarrior 2nd ed rpg for continuing characters. with the character(s), we have brief rpg moments for gathering Intel. from that, we determine the forces used to complete the mission.
example: our characters go to the town near the storage depot that they plan on attacking. while in town, they get some rumors about possible forces at the depot. they can get a sense what the locals think of the situation. they learn that 4 medium mechs and 4 armored vehicles with troops are at the depot. the towns people think the soldiers are arrogant "expletive".
as players, we decide to send in a combined arms company. 2 mech lances (medium and heavy) and a Lance (4 platoons) of mechanized infantry.
the GM sets up the battle and can add or subtract elements which fit the overall story of the campaign.
there is a lot more but this is a good idea of what you are asking.
Destiny or A Time of War. RPG is the way to go. Original D & D player. I have minis that date back to late 70's.
destiny is an abstract system for role-playing. it's good for character concepts, but it's not directly compatible with either standard battletech or Alpha Strike.
A Time of War is an ok game that puts way too much effort into character creation. the game mechanics are a bit crunchy. the skills and abilities are also not compatible with either standard battletech or Alpha Strike.
that said, the better role-playing game for battletech is Mechwarrior 2nd ed rpg! characters are simple. the game mechanics are directly used with standard battletech - no conversion or translations of skills and abilities. Alpha Strike still needs an adjustment since the skill combines both piloting and gunnery.
final note: CGL has stated in numerous interviews that there are no plans to produce any additional materials for either Destiny or A time of war. that means, the games are as good as dead, as far as CGL is concerned. there are dozens of source books and other material published for Mechwarrior 2nd ed rpg. good adventures and stories, especially for Solaris VII.
@@bruced648 Good point. Not familiar with MechWarrior 2nd Ed. RPG. I like the idea of creating a hybrid system to merge Alpha Strike with an RPG backbone. Character creation is important, but storytelling and game mechanics are key to making it work. CGL and others might not like the idea, but I have toyed with idea of creating a better Battletech RPG.
@RealMechDruid I made my own rpg system that simplifies the Mechwarrior 2nd ed system. while it's made for standard battletech, it can easily be adjusted for Alpha Strike.
the basic character creation has 2 rolls of 2D6, then 4 rolls of 1D6. that's it - your character is ready for action. the character sheet is an index card. the full rules take less than a standard sheet of paper. all the skills are a base value, plus any mods, roll 2D6 to determine success.
@@bruced648 interesting. How are you on storytelling or character development from a storytelling basis?
@RealMechDruid that kinda depends on the type of campaign the players are interested in playing. a game that has more intrigue and less battlefield will have stronger character development. a game that has more battlefield time, will have a lot more focus on organization logistics.
the current story I am running has the players operating a combined arms company (5 mechs, 3 tanks, 3 apc's and 1 platoon infantry). they were hired by local leaders to disrupt the activities of the planetary representative. the 'Duke' has made many bad decisions and the local leaders want him removed - by his superiors.
the units missions involve preventing the export of goods off world. acquisition of research tech. degrading the military capabilities of the Dukes forces. protection of the local leaders assets.
we use c-bills for payment and for all expenses. the role-playing comes in when the players want to learn Intel about opposition strength, types of units, finding items to fix their damage, hiring new troops and pilots, negotiating mission rewards. possible espionage assignments.
it's a good guerrilla war story with continuing characters and antagonists.
I never played MechWarrior, battle force, this alpha strike is different Played then the regular game.
Have you taken a look at the Campaign Operations sourcebook?
Turns out I have it on my shelf! This is what happens when you buy lots of BT stuff...and forget you bought it! lol
@@Thearmedpainter been there myself. Love the channel
