He led the development of the Elder Scrolls series and the Fallout series, and an upcoming game Starfield.
Honestly comes down to Todd and only Todd. Guy can answer or structure any sentance any way he wants. Nothing to do with Lex asking the question. All comes down to reppitore vocabulary wise, and brain usage. It's not hard to give a unique answer everytime. Howard just sucks as a communicator when hes not reading off a que. Even then meh. Fanboy display pic. love 3 and NV. Point is i see it how it is. Comes down to intellect at its base. Same copy paste answers results in a 1 intellect build. COugh cough fallout fucking 4.
The thing is, I don't want to play the same TES game for 10+ years. The lore of Tamriel makes me want to explore beyond a single province, and that requires a new game, or an army of indie mod makers to do. How much longer for Valenwood? Black Marsh? Elseweyer? Or how about continents outside of Tamriel?
Hearing that modders were hired makes me so happy. I'm hoping that ES6 will combine all the best aspects of the mods to truly make the ultimate open world game.
They should add an optional super resolution download pack. Similar to minecraft hd textures . Will make it easier for texture modding which is the most common modding
I love sweet little lies Tod so much. Guy seems genuinely fun to be around and creating games is a passion to him and not just a paycheck Tod used to in the day be on message boards under anonymous accounts or at places like something awful pretending to be a normal fan of Morrowind to promote it. Dude absolutely loves Elder Scrolls People give him a lot of shit for the direction of Skyrim vs previous installments, But it was a smart business decision considering the market at the time was shifting away from RPGs to exploration, something which Skyrim absolutely excelled at early in the game and is still a solid choice even today if you wanna get lost in a world (personal preference of mine is towards Morrowind, but you cannot deny that what Skyrim seeks out to do, it does it perfectly) Thankfully though the market is starting to bring back more of the RPG elements and I think starfield could be a very good opportunity to see that or at the very least the ball rolling towards that The only thing of his that I cannot understand is why they continue to insist that the developers at Bethesda use the outdated creation engine from Oblivion, when they actually own much more modern and better engines, actually they own one of the best engines and they've never used it.
his passion is just slightly misplaced when it starts getting muddied by running the game as a big business. Like how the games are “RPG-lite” “fat free low calorie already predigested into wall-e smoothies” garbage now. We are adults Todd! We want challenge and consequence like Elden Ring. Not effortless fantasy amusement parks!
@@SobeCrunkMonster the game has changed & Tod sees it. That is why he keeps mentioning the new focus on RPG elements in Starfield, the guy knows markers & made the bold prediction about exploration being the main attraction in the 10s with Skyrim, which that approached peak with BOTW (You can tell that they also see the market forces by transitioning towards more Legacy Dungeons for Tears of the kingdom) Funny enough Demon Souls was the answer to Oblivion, so on a twist of fate Elder Scrolls now has to define itself outside of Fromsoft's Elden Ring or be an imitator. Maybe one day Bethesda will actually use the other engines it's got ownership of, but of course they won't.
@@Christmas_Johan honestly I'm kind of fine with a creative engines as they want to feel I didn't want to pay for license and also to prove their worth and like in house ( if they're able to license to use Unreal Engine 5 or any later on version of the engine)
@@videogames9972well he is a businessman and executive producer at Bethesda so of course he thinks about money first, at least people get jobs instead of straight up ripping peoples design and choice into the game
They need a bigger team man. Imagine 2 studios, one focused on Fallout and one on The Elder Scrolls. And we could get a new game from each franchise 2x a decade. That would be amazing.
@@loganmcallister4635 1 game per franchise every 5 years is far from the current 1 every 1-2 years that it is with most mass produced AAA titles as Well were talking about Bethesda who’s known for bugs. “Quality” is really a moot point.
@@loganmcallister4635 so you’d rather have one game every 10 years… yeah sorry I’m not a fan of that, plus 5/6 years between games is more than Bathesdas current 4y cycle of development anyways, so quality would be there for sure
@@Boundless-Boredom It is quality, very high quality, actually, the scope of their games is almost inhumanly complex , that is the reason there is no competitors making anything close to what bethesda does. because is not simple task, what we get as a full game is not even all of it there's always a lot of cut content(included), that they have to leave out due to time constraints, and complexity, and even without it the game has tons of content, above average by a mile.
i was 11 years old when Skyrim came out, i’m 22 now. so crazy how far i’ve come waiting for this game. when i even saw the the reveal i was mind blown. whatever they give us i’m ready❤️
I was 3, my dad played it a ton in 2012-2014 got 100% did every mission got every item without any glitches and got all the perks. Now im starting to play it in late 2022.
Despite all the controversy surrounding Todd Howard, Lord of Memes, I'm still blown away by just how genuine and passionate about The Elder Scrolls Todd is. Remember, He's been making this series and working on it close to 30 years now. That's definitely a long time frame to still be working on more or less the same project, just expanding in scope every 3-5 years or so. It's honestly mind-blowing.
Basically the videogame developers' counterpart to J R R Tolkien's obsessive fleshing out of the Middle Earth canon over a lifetime. I do find it fascinating how some creative types will spend much of their working life fleshing out a fictional universe.
Of course i’m a bit angry that TES6 hasn’t come out yet, or that we haven’t gotten any real news or trailers but I can help but appreciate Todd and the teams dedication to taking their time to put out a quality product. As we all know, almost every game studio that was making us the games we love so much 10 years ago have turned into a machine that just pumps out cash grabs. Todd says he knows Skyrim is still being played today and that it’s their #1 played product which I believe cause I still play it along with Oblivion and Morrowind a decade after Skyrim’s release. Though if TES6 does come out unfinished, or littered with micro transactions as a cash grab as a game it will definitely put the final bullet in Bethesda and kill their studio especially after Fallout 76.
Thankfully, Bethesda is not a public company like the guys behind Cyberpunk so you'd hope they wouldn't rush it out - unless Microsoft actually finally gets them and as a result does the same thing.
I know it just a joke. But on E3 22, I saw Todd has been so old. As a fan of Bethesda Game. It makes me think. How much time got Todd could serve to the Game of the World?
For some reason I got goosebumps when Todd said that he’s spent more time in the elder scrolls world than any other. You can tell how passionate he is about it. I know that elder scrolls 6 will be great, whenever it comes out.
And after all that, they're still gonna try to sneak in some monetization around mods. Todd might have his vision, but faceless executives up top also have their own.
i will always always thank Todd Howard for his work. this guy can take as long as he needs to for TES6. i just know itll be great and will 100 percent give me the feeling as oblivion and skyrim did as a kid. this man made my childhood. i wish i could thank him personally myself.
I never played oblivion when it was new since I would have been 11 when Skyrim came out and since Im so used to playing much better quality games there is no way for me to enjoy the game at all
@@Feynvel i was 6 when oblivion came out. first played it on my uncles computer when my dad would let me come over. fell in love with oblivion and TES since and always will be a fan
Skyrim was the first game that felt like I'd been transported into another world. I was also getting pretty baked when it came out so that probably helped but to this day, I still get goose bumps when I play it after an extended break. The witcher 3 is right there with it for me in terms of immersion.
Skyrim was the first game that gave me a real sense of freedom. GTA kinda gave me that feel first but not to the degree of Skyrim. You can only shoot so many people and steal so many cars before it gets boring. Skyrim is only boring to me now because I've pretty much done everything there is to do. I wish I could erase my memories and relive the experiences again.
One thing I love about Elder Scrolls franchise is how accessible they make it to mod their games. Bethesda has had some questionable moments but I will always respect the fact that they give such freedom to the community. It's a perfect symbiotic relationship and Skyrim is the proof. 11 years later and people still enjoying it thanks to the mod community
Most companies see mods and want to prevent it, but the fact Tom Howard can see, play, and realize its makes the game more enjoyable and wants to put these people to work to make the next game even better is amazing.
definitely a game developer that hasn't lost their love and passion for the games they make. despite the controversies, you can tell this guy just wants to make these amazing games for the whole world to enjoy. unlike most devs nowadays that release half-developed games as a AAA-title
@@KevinLopez-pu7ll You make a point that they shipped out a load of garbage, but Bethesda had yet to release anymore games, and that means we have no way to gauge whether they can redeem themselves or not right now.
@@KevinLopez-pu7ll We do have proof. Every game they release tries something new. There's a base formula and then there are sections of their games that does things no other games have considered. That's a HUGE risk from a business standpoint, yet they still do it.
Bro its actually funny how people started full on shitting on bethesda's entire existence due to fallout 76 as if they hadnt released constant bangers before that
guys there is no other game developers like bethesda they are almost always creating the best games ever back to back i mean there is no other gamedev that make such perfect games in so many different ways and they do rpg type of games far better than the competition, skyrim is still amazing and better than literally all the newer games which is just sick i´ve played more skyrim than hogwarts legacy since hogwarts legacy came out lol and legacy is a pretty solid game too. now we just need to Thu'um bethesda so they can accelerate elder scrolls 6
Wasn't a big fan of skyrim, but I just played oblivion for the first time last year and I absolutely loved it. One of the most fun I've had in a game in awhile, really hope the game has a lot of great sidequests like oblivion did
I have to second the other reply. I played skyrim a bit off and on as a teenager which I enjoyed a decent amount, but I finally played Oblivion near the beginning of the pandemic and, like you, loved it. Eventually, tried out Morrowind as well, and, while it has a slow early game, once you invest a little into a playthrough it is a uniquely sublime and immersive RPG.
I hated how the world didn't really react to your achievements. You were the #1 mage in the world and everyone in the world acted like news about this "person" didn't reach them...That would be so easy to make.. "reach x = voice lines will change"
Must be such a huge compliment to the devs, that people a decade or 2 later would still be avid fans of this game. Really looking forward to the next iteration of the ES series
@@Slim2Flo specifically thinking of Morrowind here... Todd had a heavy hand in that game's development, and I feel like he grew to resent that game being what it was. Not only did Kirkbride get seperated from TES lore, skyrim even subtly mocks him with the character Septimus Signus and their quest "discerning the transmundane" in which his "mad" writings and speakings are stylized exactly like Kirkbride's Sermons of Vivec, and other aspects of his writing style. The thing is. people did eventually grow tired of Oblivion, Skyrim too. and so they mod them to make the games interesting again. There are still many people, twenty years later, who love morrowind as it is specifically because of how it does it's world. I hope Todd realizes that, like he realized it near the End of Skyrim's "core" life cycle and the dragonborn DLC
@@Slim2Flo Actually Bethesda has an incredibly high stay rate with their devs. Wouldn't be too surprised if most of the dev team for Skyrim is still there. Would still be a bit surprised, but not too much.
If there was an alternative people would play that. But since morons keep paying for the same game over and over there is no economic incentive for them to get the next game done.
@@chainsaw8507 it would mostly be surprising in a timeline sense, it having been 11 years and all that. Sure, Skyrim didn't lose them a lot of good people, but Fallout 76 did, if not Fallout 4 itself. But I could be totally wrong
I've got a Legacy of the Dragonborn ultra modded playthrough with somewhere north of 600 mods installed that I'm currently on break from - I agree with your statement
Todd seems extremely chill and even with all the stress of trying to make this game come out as soon as possible it's good to know he wants the same impact Skyrim (and Oblivion and even Morrowind) had but better than ever in terms of all aspects (it takes time). I'm sure it'll be worth the wait with next gen consoles, mechanics, and gaming/editing software helping make games that much more detailed and immersive.
But who wants to play the same game for 20 years anyway? We would want a different province eventually lol, unless they're going to make an entire new game as a DLC into TES6
The one and only game that wont fail me ever. time and time again I find myself playing either modded or vanilla what ever the vibe is that day. Todd has so much respect and care for the community and that's what really differs games from Elder Scrolls.
@@shrbrhsjdbw Yep, because the community has to patch their games. Without the unofficial skyrim patch your game will probably crash on pc. Or break a questline. One of the two.
They don't fully embrace modding. They still will screw over the modding community to make a quick buck. Skyrim Special Edition and Anniversary Edition showing that
It’s actually really good to hear that Todd and ostensibly Bethesda are designing the game with the thought in mind that this game will be played for many many years
@@forsakenoutcast Tbh I've been playing Skyrim since it came out but never finished the story, I just do a lot of random stuff with mods I am yet to fight Alduin, it's just too many quests that I can't be asked doing to get to it, currently I just have a world stacked with crazy enemies with Legendary+++ health and stats while playing as Kratos from God of War and brutalising them all because I don't have a PS4.
God, for as much as we roast this guy, I can’t help but love Todd Howard. His passion for the series makes me root for him and all of Bethesda like no other studio.
Bugs included 😅 honestly though their online stuff isn’t great as it could be but I mean even comparing what fallout 76 and eso is it’s still decent compared to the triple A titles we have now so lackluster yk there are few studios that actually care anymore it feels like
It would be cool to see: - realistically populated towns and cities - battles between hundreds of NPCs maybe sometimes scripted (for main quest) and sometimes unscripted (for side quests) - NPCs with actual lives (they gather resources, make things, sell what they make, buy from one another.) - making use of machine learning and procedural generation to create a living, thinking world (I think this might be a bit too much of an ask. One day it will happen, but my guess is it will be some random indie game with a brilliant programmer CEO who brings it to life)
You forgot glitches. I personally want to see all the classic glitches. Randomly teleporting animals, my companion merging with furniture and becoming a lamp, npcs sitting halfway beneath the floor.... This is important to me
Some of the things you are asking here Bethesda and Todd have been promising since the Oblivion days. I remember hearing marketing fairytales about NPCs living their lives and having crazy unscripted events. The game ended up having NPCs with a bare-bones daily schedule and not much else. Skyrim didn't push things much further in that regard and I seriously doubt ES6 will either. So much focus in modern game development goes into the visual presentation and creating a ginormous world that is awesome to look at, AI and everything else takes a back seat. Also, I seriously doubt we're gonna see such level of advancements from an indie developer, at least not on the same scale. Even if they somehow have the budget for it, it's hard for them to manage their overly ambitious ideas and release an actual working end product..*cough*Star citizen*cough*
@@fargoth391 True but some of the past entries of the Elderscrolls have made it more difficult for the player to become “the chosen one” and therefore feel more well-earned. Skyrim felt too easy and quick… this is all of course just my opinion
“How do you make a game that’s played for 20 years?” Allow the community to build upon and expand the experience. That’s why Classic Doom is still immensely popular for example; and why people are still playing Skyrim almost religiously.
I've noticed on a couple of these clips Todd has talked about how Bethesda wholeheartedly supports modders. He seriously deserves some credit here, especially when he talks about helping modders to earn a living with their mods. In this video in particular he wants modders to know that Bethesda supports their efforts to be independently self-sufficient. That is to say, free to create content how they wish and for whomever they wish. That's incredibly heartwarming to hear. That level of support is so simultaneously beneficial to the content creators, as well as it is rewarding for the consumer. I must say it's been a joy to hear what Todd has to say, and he is certainly in my mind demonstrating that Bethesda is a very forward-thinking and progressive game development company.
bro do you even know what todd did with modders? he tried to make money off them nothing more. he likes them because they MAKE HIM MONEY, that they improve his barbones products is just a happy accident for him. at least thats hios curretn stance.
This is so cool. I mean really, we are adults here, this isn't about getting giddy so much as realizing the work that goes into these deep experiences that really do mean something to us. Books used to be like this for humanity, now we have things people like Todd help make, to take us into our imaginations.
Books are infinitely deeper and satsif in a more subconscious deeper level than gaming. I mean Dostoevsky or Tolstoy has a way of calming that games simply don't. Especially as you get older and begin dealing with life's myriad complexities. Games can take you away briefly but you always arrive back at the problems which are not a tiny bit bigger because you've spent a couple hours not dealing with it lol. This is when a good book comes in handy.
@@vLinko777 but books are text. Videogames can contain text. There’s no reason a game can’t literally just be the visual & audio equivalent of an interactive book. There’s many games that can provoke thought in the same way a classic of literature can. The one thing I will say is that a book does force you to use your imagination more, since there’s no visuals. But again, many games often have a blank screen with text to read. No different than reading a book Videogames are basically books told in an interactive visual form rather than a literary form Like I read Moby Dick last year. They could 100% make a videogame adaptation of Moby Dick that lives up to the book
You can say it's been a 15-16 year time gap between ES5 and ES6. But this not only ensures ES6 has the best technology to make it with, but also 15 years of ideas to form is a long time and that's very exciting for a dev team.
Unfortunately it also builds an unreasonable amount of hype. That’s why it took so long for Valve to make another half-life game. Alex was amazing because it was a new take. Half-Life 3 won’t ever happen because the devs know its impossible to surpass people’s expectations. That’s also why, among other reasons, Cyberpunk 2077 did so poorly. They built up the hype for years then couldn’t deliver. I’m very concerned that ES6 won’t be able to stand on its own because ES5 was so beloved. Starfield is pretty exciting though because it’s a new EP so they don’t have to worry about the hype.
Yeah that's what they said about fo:4 and look how terrible that game was compared to new Vegas.. I'm guessing we're gonna get another massive downgrade just like sykrim was a downgrade from oblivion.
cope. 15 years to make a game isn't about ideas or technology, it's about administrative lame crap and corporate BS. missing deadlines and the like. a team of devs can easily build a game in 15 years. and ES6 was always gonna have the best technology (at the time) since it's a AAA title. Whether it's 2015 or 2035 they would have the latest tech
If you guys want Elder Scrolls 6 to stand the test of time like Skyrim has, then base the game around freedom and possibilities like Skyrim... FO4 and Starfield push you into questing constantly, burning us out quickly, and pushing us into a corner. On Skyrim, you get guilted into traveling to Whiterun to warn them about the dragon, and then you get guilted into killing the dragon at the Keep, but then it's pretty smooth sailing. Keep quests optional as much as possible and keep them casual, aside from the main story and a few side quests here and there. That way we can be whoever we want. Maybe I'd rather be a hunter, or a farmer some playthroughs.
I think the rpg element of alternate start was the part that was most missing from Skyrim. The problem was that you were not a random guy encountering a dragon, as you would be like a real dragonborn, but always a prisoner coming from nowhere, with he same epic intro sequence. I hope they adress this and make the main character playable with different backgrounds.
I remember looking back at my characters in Skyrim and realizing I had over 1000 hrs in the game. It then I realized how crazy that is for the amount of time it took me to do that. But I feel like it was my first taste of virtual reality. The first game that made me feel immersed. I took it too far then but I’m ready for the next chapter. Been saying for years modders need to be integrated into game dev.
@@jamesmiller5331 modders not the moderations. The guys that tinker with games many times make something more amazing than the vanilla. For free. If I had enough money I would have hired a team of them to make a game.
Legit, fir how goofy the AI are its so good it'll never not be fun to play. Great memories I'll never forget coming home from highschool to play this game.
Oh man, hearing this guy’s voice feels good, it’s the voice that brings you cool news about games you’ve been wanting to play He looks older now but I wish him and his team long years of life and creation
I think his passion is why the games are so successful. Unlike other games brands like COD and Assassin's Creed, which are so mass produced aimed at making money as quick as possible. Whilst they are successful, in recent years they have lost their heart and don't feel like the games they used to make. Todd keeps a close knit, passionate team who care about making a quality game and are willing to spend years of their life developing it. It is painful we have had to wait this long, but we know the wait will be worth it with what I am sure will be a beautiful and worthy edition to the Elder Scrolls family
As with every TES game, I am certain Todd and rhe rest of his team will make another legendary game. Looking forward to see another generation defining game
@@Blackbuck9832 Every entry has been a complete departure from its predecessor. What’s your point? Skyrim is nothing like, Oblivion is nothing like Morrowind, Morrowind is nothing like Daggerfall. I never played Arena so I won’t attest to that but regardless, the series has always evolved.
My first ever immersive RPG was Dragon Age Origins. No one came close to it until I knew about Mass Effect, then none ever came close again until Skyrim. I was late to RPG scene, yes, but those years were the absolute best gaming experiences I've ever had. Not to mention I was in my 20's back then where I have infinite energy to game
Years ago I worked tech support for ESO. I had played the Elder Scrolls since Morrowind, when I was only 11 so it was a dream come true. I can't understate the magic this guy and Bethesda brought into me and my friends lives! Even recently we still got together to play Daggerfall
Side note, I would love to see an extension on the crafting system. Like the ability to make sword handles out of different materials, sheaths out of different materials, maybe some engraving mechanic, the ability to dye your armor, and under armors, like heavy leather armor with a cloth or lighter leather under armor. And expand on the homestead building. Like we can make a house with different materials, add rooms, custom furnishings, like oak or marble, maybe add a new skill set for home building that includes farming for plants, animals and what not. And eventually the ability to build a small community with npcs running things like said farming while we're away questing. I always thought that stuff would be cool
I am glad that the game is being created with meticulous, genuine intent, we have been waiting a long while here, but TES 6 is probably going to be an actual life chapter for a lot of people! Lots of smelly seats too
Im glad they're choosing to take the time they need to release a properly polished game instead of rushing it out. I think it really shows some progress after learning from their mistakes from certain other games.
i genuinly believe they are trying to create the best game they possibly can for us so i dont care how long i have to wait. as long as the final product is worth the initial wait. love you todd
@@SonofSol1 it may seem ridiculous to you but im willing to delay my own gratification so they can deliver something that will truly go down in history. i dont care how long it takes them as long as its the best product they could create. if you think any good game has ever come out of rushed development i encourage you to try playing cyberpunk or any call of duty after bo2
@@jessekaler8475 yea but thats on the post release patch side, and its one of the most enjoyable parts of the game. nothing to do with the creation of the game. take literally every other game theyve ever created as an example
Most under appreciated asset to a game dev is a modding community. Valve wouldn’t be half the company now or have the titles they have today without it.
Todd’s the bomb man he might troll the crap out of us at times lol but he obviously cares about their product and respects the fans and modders as well, just all that alone is a recipe for great and thoughtful game design and that right there is why people are still playing Skyrim over a decade later
love him or hate him he's still just a guy and he's pretty down to earth, i think it's easy to forget that he does want the best and they have to be strategic about the whole thing so that the game can age well and be enjoyed for years to come
I think some key points to making a game live longterm is adding details, secrets, freedom, and easy modability ex: l4d2 and minecraft last so long cause of their huge range of mods ex: skyrim still gets posts about players finding never before found things even after they've personally played the game for 10 years straight ex: games that put you in a limited or linear path (tell tale games) don't last long in popularity, games that let you customize and even go as far as game break like using enchantments and potions to get a 1000 degree knife in skyrim really keep players excited to figure out new things and keep coming back and youtubers making content to make viewers want to play the game too! (fr tho a real fun killer is limitations and road blocks, if taking 1 quest determines that an entire quarter of the game is blocked off until you make a new start, that really upsets me and I'm sure a lot of other gamers) keeping things a little sandboxy is always appreciated)
Prayers for Todd Howard, he’s dealing with a really tough medical situation right now, he can’t actually not lie when speaking into a microphone, thoughts and vibes for this man 🙏🙏
Todd Howard is literally a fan of Bethesda, making games that he likes and we all just happen to love his taste. Skyrim is my favorite game of all time, the amount of content in the vanilla game is truly impeccable.
It's not my number 1 favorite game but in my top 5. I don't care what people say Skyrim is a masterpiece even with all its flaws. Also, Elder Scrolls lore and world building is amazing and helps immerse yourself into the world. I can just walk around listening to the music and checking out the scenery.
Morrowind is better in almost every respect except the combat. Unfortunately they didn't reuse and build upon the world building concepts they invented with this game and apply it to the follow ups
I admire that Todd and like-minded colleagues appreciate what modders have done to keep TES going. Some developers don’t care or actively go against community content sometimes.
Met Todd in a restaurant in Aspen. He stood up and shook my hand and introduced himself. Mind you I was a busser at the time. Dude is so humble and down to earth.
What make Elder Scrolls games so different than other games is the character you create is actually you. Most games you can change the appearance of the character but they follow a specific storyline. Anyone can make an open world game, but can anyone make that world feel like it actually exists. Skyrim even without mods has so many different ways to play. One could even ignore the primary storyline all together. Only Skyrim has vast caves to explore. Most other games the caves are small or just in one area. It will be a monumental task to one up Skyrim.
I hope they make the next elder scrolls more roleplaying instead of being a sandbox with rpg elements. I want my character's skills to matter more than the gameplay, skill checks, more gameplay variation for spellcasting, etc.
He said in the interview why he thinks it's a really bad idea to have a predefined character like "Mage" or "Necromancer" or "Barbarian" or "Assassin" etc. According to him, if you choose the class of your character and after 10 hours in the game you realize you don't like this build, you can't do anything to change it except for starting new game. And it kills the gameplay and attractiveness of the game. He said they strip those limitations intentionally, so you can try being a mage if being assassin seems boring to you. Without losing hours of progress.
@@dasik84 Great idea to maximize the audience, but it actually kills replay value in my opinion. Being able to max out everything gives me no incentive to start the game over ever.
@@Propane_Acccessories I actually don't care much about "replaying" the game. I have thousands of hours in one playthrough. I'm a completionist and I want to have EVERYTHING 100% done and explored. I'm still angry that I did everything in Tomb Raider and still have only 98 %. There are simply no other 2 % in the game. Right now, I'm modding my Skyrim with all quest and new land mods possible, so they all could be experienced in one new playthrough. The only game worthy of replaying in which it doesn't bother me is Vampire: Masquerade - Bloodlines. There are 7 vampire clans and every single one has completely different gameplay (well, 4 for sure, other 3 are kinda combinations of the other ones). And the storyline is SO good - I consider it the best RPG ever created, with Elder Scrolls the close second - that you really enjoy it even multiple times.
This is refreshing to hear. He’s saying that because he and Bethesda love Elder Scrolls, they are going to take time to make it as perfect as possible. I wish this love and passion was in ever person who is in charge of producing sequels to beloved franchises and worlds
I think many more companies should do this. For example nintento and Zelda. They took their time to make the new tears of kingdom and I'm sure it will be a great game. Again bc they took their time. Es6, I'm very sure that game will be very very damn big and sucessfull I belive in that. And he is takin his time with his team. Games like call of duty drop a new game every year. And every year again it's bullshit. They didn't release a new cod every year back then. And back then the games were good. But it works with the Money :/
@@Cythan Pokémon has gone down hill like a lot of other franchises. Hollywood and Video game studios just want to pump out as many titles as possible to boost their sales and make a fortune. Most of them don’t care about the art form it’s self. That’s why I love it when creators and artists like Todd Howard put their soul into these incredible works of beauty.
Todd knows how to run a business. Hate him or love him, he’s successful for a reason. I like how he acknowledges the majority of the game’s success and longevity comes from the community.
say what you want about Todd, but when he talks about the elder scrolls, you can tell really how passionate he is about it and it's just really wholesome to see that from a developer these days
Gotta say, I am not huge into most Bethesda Games. I only know Bethesda from Fallout 3, Fallout NV, and of course Skyrim, all of which came out when I was a Kid. I am 22 now, I say all this to say, that Bethesda being so on board with the Modding Community is a huge breath of fresh Air, when you still have Developers like Rockstar, who will chastise and shun the Modding Community around GTA, but have no problem pushing Money Grab Updates, while ignoring what the Community at large is asking for. I play a Modded version of GTA V, single player of Course, and it can take hours to Days to fully setup the Mod that I play to my liking, meanwhile, I could install Skyrim, which is 5gb, and Mod the daylights out of it really easily, without having to use Special Tools, Tutorials, create an entire second install of it in case my Modded version breaks, risk getting banned, ect ect. Really genius on Bethesda's part to actually ingratiate the Modding Community, anna know how you get players to play the same Game for 10+ Years? THAT is how, give them the ability to create endless content with Modding and it is obvious just how long a Game will last.
That's what i said. Todd is a wise man. He knows how to attract audience for a longer period of time and make a win win situation for everyone. Skyrim was a masterpiece. It had everything which most people want in a game like dragons, Werewolves, vampires, Magick, Orcs, Empires, Ability to have Children build homes excetra excetra.
Skyrim is by far my most played game (not counting mmo's like WoW and OSRS) Todd Howard and the team really made something special they really made a game that could last for decades I just hope that ES6 could meet/exceed such a high stranded that Skyrim left...
I spent well over 2000-3000 hours on Ragnarok online as a kid/teenager, was so addicted to that game from 2003-2008 that it was ridiculous. I had/still have 6 nearly fully-maxed characters and my original account to this day last I checked.
Huh? They're probably always working on something for each of their IPs, but it doesn't go into serious development until they have a solid plan or idea
@@relevation0 Bro, it's the other way around. Previous games didn't have the perk system, all you had to was to boost weapon/magic skill for accuracy and damage or lesser spell failure. That's way more simple and streamlined than what Skyrim have.
This is why idc if it takes until 2025 or even 2030. I still replay skyrim. Like he said vanilla there are still many ways to play it and modding just keeps it going and I admire how he talks about elder scrolls. The lore is amazing and I expect the next game to be filled with more for us to discover which making in a larger scale can take time.
This feels like the most genuine conversation with him I’ve seen. I’m glad he’s kinda coming around to being more open and just saying it’s gonna take awhile instead of rushing things to appease people like they were doing with F4 and 76
actually to produce a truly great game 20 years is absolutelky acceptable. bethesda has porven in the past that they can make a giant world that feels authentic, it takes years jsut to build the map and locations. i really dont understand why people want a game to be released sooner(if they are not gonna die in the forseeable future).
getting skyrim on christmas and playing it for the first time is still one of the fondest memories i’ve ever had to this day, my love for gaming has faded but i would buy an entire new console just to play elder scrolls 6.
Playing Skyrim more than one play trough isn't all that appealing itself. They owe a lot of their succes to the insane modding community that strives to fix their games and improve it not only on a fundamental level, but add so much to it that it becomes bigger than the original game. Bethesda could surprise me with an excellent physics engine, a true change in NPC ai behavior and an expansive selection of different voice actors. And as a thank you to the modders allow for greater acces to the engine itself, so modders could implement future tech improvements like different types of anti aliasing or ray-tracing, stuff like that.
"trick question" and "i wish it was soon" are enough to convince me it would be released sometimes around 4020. hope my grand grand grand grandchild would enjoy the game.
Wait what, I could have sworn elder scrolls 6 was already out?? I saw a trailer for it and actually gameplay of it couple years ago, but I thought it flopped compared to Skyrim so I never saw it again. I don’t remember the name for it but I remember it having a special name like all previous games have. I must have swapped universe cause I remember it so clearly too. Edit: like I remember a big tree, a cave or like relics, the ocean, and the graphics where actually really good. I think there were some flying/levitating creatures that glowed, and like big mushrooms. Also I think there were a race living inside the tree too, like a city. And as I said it died off, but I remember some type of hype around it and people playing it, but it never got the same concurrent players as Skyrim have. If these descriptions seems familiar to someone or if someone knows a game with those vague descriptions I remember, please do respond and show me a video of that cause I wanna know if I’m tripping or if it’s an actual game just not elder scrolls…
Very good aproach to the making of elder scrolls 6. It seems it won't be a fallout 4 or 76 but truly one of the greatest games of all time, and that takes time. so take all the time you need Todd.
You can't compare Fallout 76 because it was outside of their comfort zone. They'd never made any MMO before, it was completely new for them. They're great in offline single player RPGs, I dare to say they're the best in making such games.

People joke about Tod all the time but I think his passion for elder scrolls is very admirable.
I love sweet little lies Tod so much. Guy seems genuinely fun to be around and creating games is a passion to him and not just a paycheck
Tod used to in the day be on message boards under anonymous accounts or at places like something awful pretending to be a normal fan of Morrowind to promote it. Dude absolutely loves Elder Scrolls
People give him a lot of shit for the direction of Skyrim vs previous installments, But it was a smart business decision considering the market at the time was shifting away from RPGs to exploration, something which Skyrim absolutely excelled at early in the game and is still a solid choice even today if you wanna get lost in a world (personal preference of mine is towards Morrowind, but you cannot deny that what Skyrim seeks out to do, it does it perfectly)
Thankfully though the market is starting to bring back more of the RPG elements and I think starfield could be a very good opportunity to see that or at the very least the ball rolling towards that
The only thing of his that I cannot understand is why they continue to insist that the developers at Bethesda use the outdated creation engine from Oblivion, when they actually own much more modern and better engines, actually they own one of the best engines and they've never used it.
100x
his passion is just slightly misplaced when it starts getting muddied by running the game as a big business.
That is why he keeps mentioning the new focus on RPG elements in Starfield, the guy knows markers & made the bold prediction about exploration being the main attraction in the 10s with Skyrim, which that approached peak with BOTW (You can tell that they also see the market forces by transitioning towards more Legacy Dungeons for Tears of the kingdom)
Funny enough Demon Souls was the answer to Oblivion, so on a twist of fate Elder Scrolls now has to define itself outside of Fromsoft's Elden Ring or be an imitator.
Maybe one day Bethesda will actually use the other engines it's got ownership of, but of course they won't.

@@Slim2Flo specifically thinking of Morrowind here... Todd had a heavy hand in that game's development, and I feel like he grew to resent that game being what it was. The thing is. people did eventually grow tired of Oblivion, Skyrim too. and so they mod them to make the games interesting again. “How do you make a game that’s played for 20 years?”
Allow the community to build upon and expand the experience.

@@vLinko777 guess you haven't played any deep games. They're out there and they're as satisfying as books.
No different than reading a book
Videogames are basically books told in an interactive visual form rather than a literary form

Don’t get me wrong I’m a huge fan. I have over 2000 hours in Skyrim. But it’s just concerning that they’re so reluctant to move on from that game.

I took it too far then but I’m ready for the next chapter. ex: l4d2 and minecraft last so long cause of their huge range of mods
ex: skyrim still gets posts about players finding never before found things even after they've personally played the game for 10 years straight
ex: games that put you in a limited or linear path (tell tale games) don't last long in popularity, games that let you customize and even go as far as game break like using enchantments and potions to get a 1000 degree knife in skyrim really keep players excited to figure out new things and keep coming back and youtubers making content to make viewers want to play the game too!
(fr tho a real fun killer is limitations and road blocks, if taking 1 quest determines that an entire quarter of the game is blocked off until you make a new start, that really upsets me and I'm sure a lot of other gamers) keeping things a little sandboxy is always appreciated)

It will be a monumental task to one up Skyrim.
the biggest thing with Skyrim is having to level skills up in stead of just gaining exp

The only game worthy of replaying in which it doesn't bother me is Vampire: Masquerade - Bloodlines. There are 7 vampire clans and every single one has completely different gameplay (well, 4 for sure, other 3 are kinda combinations of the other ones).
