An inquest into PC Dumphreys' death, held earlier this year, concluded on Tuesday (December 20) with Assistant Coroner Robert Cohen revealing that BMW had first known about the fault with the N57 engine in 2016. The inquest heard that since 2014, five to seven crankshaft bearing failures had been reported each month which the coroner described as a "startlingly high failure rate".
I had one of these n57 engines in with a low oil pressure fault s few years ago, they'd turned off engine immediately and stripping down to check the oil pump off the car, when spinning with a driill with the pickup sumerged in clean engine oil it was venting out of the side, rather than pumping our of the top outlet because the presure relief valve had got stuck in the vent position. Cleaning the pressure relief valve throughly as it was quite sticky so it moved freely resolved the problem and the car is still running today.
In theory yes, but due to the massive wear on the middle of the bearings, when I’ve removed the cap, the bearing was hugging the cranckshaft, didn’t come out with the cap…in any case rebuilt is successful, till this day is running like a dream

Köszi
surely if the locator tab is still in order, the bearing has not spun?
