  • In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by one of my heroes, Early Church scholar Dr. Thomas Scheck to unpack his amazing story of growing up Catholic, leaving the faith for Evangelical Christian, and then coming storming back to the Church after 17 years away. It's a great journey!
    Listen as Dr. Scheck explains why an encounter with two Baptist roommates in college fired him up for a relationship with Christ, his time as an Evangelical missionary with his wife in Germany, and his struggles and successes as an Evangelical pastor for almost ten years.
    And, of course, what ultimately led Dr. Scheck, his wife, and many of his children back to the Catholic Church.
    I'm so grateful for a chance to have this conversation and Dr. Scheck is a wonderful storyteller.

    I grew up Catholic. We are the only true, original Christians. Catholicism is my identity. As a young kid, maybe 10 or 11 I found myself alone in an empty Church one day, Christ the King Parish and I felt the presence of Jesus. He was actually there with me. It was a profound experience, a palpable, real encounter with our Lord. Of course as I got older the world took the place of Jesus, I lost my faith and became a protestant. I quickly realized that protestantism was false because it wasn’t Catholic, became disillusioned and stopped going to church entirely. But Jesus was always there, hanging around in the back of my mind. After 33 years as a none practicing Catholic the Holy Spirit brought me home to the Catholic faith of my youth. As a strong Christian Catholic Jesus has proven to me that he has only one body on earth, the Catholic Church.

      I can also ask how is the "mental assent" going. Of course I do not mean it because it would misrepresent many sincere protestants in the same way you misrepresent Catholicism.

    I’m so gladder than glad to hear Catholics who were brought up in the Catholic Church but had either no faith and no up bringing in the Catholic Church teachings because it’s a problem with the family meaning the person father or mother that didn’t help their children learn about the Catholic Church teachings and faith which is an enormous problem with families in the Catholic Church.But it’s a glorious mystery how The Holy Trinity can help some fallen away Catholics to understand and return back to the Catholic Church,Thanks be to God for that infinitely and Eternally Amen 🙏

    I was born in the 1960s. I had my first Holy Communion in 1971 at St Monica’s Church in Santa Monica California. I remember the confusion over Vatican 2. Even as a child I sensed the tension in the church. I accept Vatican 2 but i disagree with the way it was implemented. Many people in my generation left the church. I did too. I left when I was 27 for a year. My family challenged me to do my research. To give the Catholic Church a chance. So I did. Scott Hawn’s conversion story is what brought me back.

    For anyone considering entering into the Catholic church, I recommend reading works of the early church fathers and the thousands of Catholic saints. Also, research Marian apparitions, Eucharistic miracles, and try to attend the traditional Latin masses of the Catholic church as the latter are the masses of the ages, masses attended by nearly all of the saints for nearly two millennium.

His translation of St. Jerome's Commentary on Matthew was one of the first from that series I ever bought, and it got me hooked. Drs. Thomas Scheck, Andrew Cain, Irven Resnick, Robert Hill, and so many others have done, and are continuing to do, an immense service to the English-speaking Church.

    Can someone please give a precise definition of “having a personal relationship with Jesus” means? What does this entail?
    And then could you explain why consuming Jesus Christ, body,blood, soul and divinity in the Eucharist is somehow not considered having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ?

    • @ElishaD-rb8pv
      @ElishaD-rb8pv 5 месяцев назад +1

      It means what the catholic Church has always taught in the catechisim "to know, love and serve God". To have a relationship with God means you have to know who the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are as persons. The best way to grow in that is to read the Bible from cover to cover, with the correct catholic interpretation, as you get a good understanding of the personality of God. Praying the Rosary every day is also going to help you with insights.
      In the Eucharist you receive Jesus, and to benefit from it you got to know both Jesus and the sacrament.

    Protestant response. I have heard former Roman Catholics say the same thing about why they left Roman Catholicism. They did not recognize Roman Catholicism in their study of the early church. I think they have a strong case for coming to that conclusion. I appreciate anyone who studies the Church Fathers. There are scores of Protestant scholars who are experts on the church fathers and the early church who did not come to the same conclusion as this gentleman. Several of the Protestant Reformers were patristic scholars.

    1But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, 2by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, 3men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. 4For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; 5for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.
