- On March 10, 1968, Cream recorded a live version of "Crossroads" during a performance at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. It's my personal favorite performance of the song by any act.
RIP Jack Bruce 1943-2014
RIP Ginger Baker 1939-2019
I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees
Down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees
Asked the Lord above for mercy, "Save me if you please"
I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride
Down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride
Nobody seemed to know me, everybody passed my eye
Well I'm going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side
Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side
You can still barrel house, baby, on the riverside
Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side
Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side
You can still barrel house, baby on the riverside
"You can run, you can run", tell my friend boy, Willie Brown
"Run, you can run", tell my friend boy Willie Brown
And I'm standing at the crossroads, believe I'm sinking down.
I know I will get shit for this, but this was the absolute peak of Claptons playing. Lots of great songs after this, but nothing with this incredible raw energy.
The only trio, where three guys play solo a the same time and it stills sounds epic.
The only way to properly listen to this is in 3 takes. Order is not important. Listen to just Jack, then listen to just Ginger and finally listen to just Eric. Perfection! The most amazing 4 minutes ever, period.
while it seems to be "Clapton's song" the bass playing by Jack Bruce on this song is out of this world..
I honestly don't believe I will ever get tired of listening to this, and the louder the better. It knocked my socks off in 1968 when I was a snot nosed know-it-all punk of 15, it knocks my socks now as a curmudgeonly senior citizen of 65, and it'll be knocking my socks off when I'm a senile old geezer with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. Simply the most kick-ass live guitar performance in the history of rock music, imho--the "gold standard" by which all other live guitar performances are measured.
Undoubtedly one of the most electrifying guitar solos ever captured on tape.
Pretty remarkable what they did with a simple 12 bar blues.
Clapton gains instant immortality with the second lead break which is the greatest in the history of rock'n roll. I can never get enough of it!
Clapton is a god.
Best guitar solo ever Clapton at his unbelievable best
Never was a band like Cream. Before or since. No other band could ever match Cream’s power and musicianship. Their music just blows me away.
When I heard this in 1968, I thought this was the best live track I've heard. I still think the same!
One of the greatest recordings in history. Eric's lead is so phenomenally beatiful that it overshadows Baker and Bruce. But they are all playing at the same level of virtuosity, which makes it so outstanding. Ginger Baker's drumming is absolutely perfect in every way. RIP Ginger Baker.
Jack Bruce was a Bass playin' beast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best live performance by any band at any time.
Blessed to have seen Cream in 68 at the Olympia in Detroit. Unforgettable. A concert for the ages. RIP Jack and Ginger
One of the greatest recordings of all time
The GREATEST live recording by ANY band EVER!
When you listen to this try to zero in on the bass line. Jack Bruce is absolutely killing it! He has a whole sub-melody going! Unbelievable!
I'm now 70 but back in the 60's I used to have a few drinks and crank this up to full volume. It took me to the place we all want to go!
