That was probably the most fun KU ever had with this song. You can see the look of amazement on his and the other band members' faces. Rob, you nailed it!
Of all the fans that have been brought onstage to perform with a famous artist, THIS remains the best fan performance I have ever seen. So many reasons why. The band was going to use this as a break so Keith was just gonna play guitar along with this kid. Rob gets the guitar in his hands and just cranks out the opening riff to Good Thing. The song wasn't one that Keith and his band would have normally played on that tour. Guitar tech tries to hand Keith a guitar but the cord gets caught up and it won't reach. By that time, Keith realizes Rob can carry the song on his own, so he waves off the other guitar. The rest of the band wanders back onstage to join in because they realize this is going to be good. The look of joy and surprise on the bass player's face throughout the performance gets me every time as Rob perfectly executes every segment of the song. This is not a super simple song to play. The main lick is tricky and Rob plays it fast and the chicken pickin' solo requires skill as well. I have listened to and watched many other recordings of Keith playing this song, and Rob plays it as well, if not even better, than Keith. You can tell Keith is blown away, you can tell the band is blown away, and I just love the pure joy from everyone involved in this performance. Epic performance and memory of a lifetime!
I’ve been playing guitar for 14 years and its night and day playing alone and it being easy, and playing with just a few people watching. This guy got up in front of thousands and blew the place away! Job very well done!
Here’s what worked in his favor. Having played in front of thousands myself I can tell you in some ways it’s easier since you can’t really see the depth of the crowd due to the darkness of the venue, lighting etcetera. He killed it regardless!
I love how this just organically becomes a barn fire of a performance ... the band slowly assembles and kicks total ass. Great performance by all ... seems like a great group of musicians to be on tour with.
You know....Keith Urban knows talent when he see's it!!! What a great expericence for Rob!!! No matter how many times I see this, it never gets old. Go....Rob!!!! I just Keith for letting talent join him. 2021....come on, join me!!!
Its like....Keith calls you on stage, hands you HIS guitar....you start playing one of Keiths songs...its sounds exactly like Keith playing! Well brother, you have made it! Very well done.
It's just so incredible just how smooth Rob's playing is....he's clearly having the time of his life...it didn't hit him till it was all over that he had just played in front of 20K people..
Folks in case you haven't heard, Rob is currently playing backing guitar in Riley Green's band on his current tour. Not bad for a young man from Berlin, Mass.
@@rachelrichardson3111 I follow Rob on Instagram, and he's presently playing gigs in Nashville. I'm not sure if he will continue with Riley Green or not. I bet he'd love to be asked to be part of Keith Urban's band.
That was incredible. Dude killed it and I don't even really enjoy much of KU's current music but a good jam sesh is a good jam sesh and for him to go up there with no practice runs, ear piece, no experience w/ the band etc, is something to admire. Dude has talent.
Rob Killed it alright, but Keith... dude... he's so freakin awesome to let a young hopefull guy play his guitar, the real deal, not just a lend-a-fan-some-strings guitar... And then the shoutout in the end... that just made my evening... SO nice !
One of the best Players From The Crowd videos on RUclips. As usual, the rest of the band had its fingers crossed. Then he cranked it. When I was playing for tips with my 12-string back in the day, I learned there were better players than me in most hotel lobbies and street corners. It was humbling and kept me practicing those many hours.
Nothing like playing for or with an Idol on your birthday. I played sax with Boots Randolph on my 21st in his club on Printers Alley. Wow, that was 36 years ago and I remember every second one f that night. Great job both Keith and Rob!
How cool was that? If I didn't already know better, I would have thought Rob was already a band member! He is a natural and made it look seamless! Congrats young man!
This is absolutely THE BEST impromptu on stage fan invite to play guitar I have EVER seen. Rob, as Keith put it, "totally killed it!" And killed it he did!! Seriously, his guitar playing was so perfect that it seems almost like a fake staged thing and not the random spur of the moment thing that it was. If it wasn't, then Keith Urban's PR peeps are brilliant! Love this video!!
When you're an artist and you do this you can have one of two outcomes. Either disaster or purely epic. This was definitely the latter... EPIC!! You can tell by the band members expressions this was totally spontaneous.... EPIC!!
Hard to believe that 5 years ago today, history was made. Thank you Rob, Kieth and the many many people of RUclips posting all the different versions of this that is now musical history. Single best rendition of this song !
The look on the bass player's face says it all! As Keith said, "You totally killed it." If you guys had rehearsed that song, you couldn't have done it any better. You are not only a great guitar player, but obviously a very skilled musician, because you fit in so easily with a very professional band. Way to go, Rob! "That was badass, man."
Keith Urban, you’re a breath of fresh air & a true Legend. Really cool giving RJ that big break on his birthday. It was a few years back but I love watching the clip. Rob Joyce, you rock, well done Master. My very best for an epic career ahead. Gav Varejes
KU has a heart of gold to share his stage with a complete stranger and take a chance that he will be good.....you can tell he is just flabbergasted at just how good Rob is.
Those that have should reach out to give opportunity to to trying to come up..its what really makes success worthwhile and meaningful being able to give back
This was a great and genuine performance, Keith saying he doesn’t need the guitar, the piano guy going surprisly to play, and theWOW expressions of the bass guy, he did it more than once he was so surprised and enjoining that, none of them saw that coming and after Keith realizes that he can play keep singing...it was amazing. I lived my dream through him, thanks rob.
Rob was great and a very good guitarist. You can see at around the 2:25 mark Keith gives up on a guitar for himself and pretty much gestures it's all you Rob. A dream come true. My dream is to play Ace Frehley's guitar. Lol
Wow... Just wow... An it was his B-day... KU was amazed by his skills. Rob Joyce is his name. From Massachusetts. Check him out on U-tube. you won't be disappointed. Thanks for this video guys. This is one for the books. Great job Rob. Happy late B-day too. Just pure awesomeness.
Wow this totally jacked my breath away and made my hair stand up awesome job wow I love Keith Urban and his band that this young man did an awesome job congratulations and happy birthday hun
Keith is the genuine article. He's a no ego, empathetic real guy who has crazy talent and doesn't let it go to his head. Just watch his reaction to Kelly Clarkson on American Idol. totally in tears. I learned later it was because his dad died a couple months earlier but it shows how relatable of a person he is. I totally have a guy crush on him and not ashamed to admit it!
This was AMAZING!!!! Keith you do so many AWESOME things for fans, & so cool how this guy just plaid the heck outta your guitar & song!!!!! Is there any wonder why we LOVE you SO MUCH!!!!!! XO D
I think the band enjoyed Rob's playing more than anyone. At about 3:53 look at the bass player's expression. He even says WOW! From viewing these videos I searched Rob Joyce and he plays with several small bands plus enters into guitar competitions as well. He does an acoustic version of a Keith Urban song that is really good . Oh he can sing as well.
Rob flat tore the place down,he absolutley ripped it up it!! What can you say about Keith,he is one of the nicest guys in music today got to hang out w him back stage in Raleigh NC at the ampitheater and he was just the best dude didn't make me feel like I was in the way!! Loves to meet new people and I told him I built drag cars and he is a gear head too!! Just a great dude in my book!
Rob was fantastic. There was a lot that was professional in his performance. For instance: There was a time when he lowered the guitar volume; the solo in the middle was amazing; the synchronization between Rob and the Drummer for that last note was terrific. BTW - the drummer did not seem to be particularly enthused by it all, but when Rob turned around to coincide with the last note, the drummer smiled widely and showed how much he really enjoyed it!! Keith showed real integrity when he brought Rob upstage and pointed to him to highlight the solo that was to come - NO JEALOUSY!!!! I've read some comments which criticized Keith's movement on stage without the guitar. My personal opinion? There's no way that Keith's movements could look anything else but sexy!!! What a great video!!!
