This is a great reminder that designers like myself need to be humble with our abilities and work alongside the people we aim to help

It's particularly poignant that we need to adopt a community first approach

As designers we're often surrounded by the burden of thinking how things could have been designed better. Norman's input on these real world problems puts back the humanity instead of personality into design. That more than our pride to have solved a problem with our solution, it's helping people help themselves that really matters and that our role as designers is merely to make it easier for them to do so. Am happy to have lived in your time, Norman.

Community based design is so important & I'm glad NNG is talking about it! Designers may be experts in their profession, but community members are experts of their lived experiences. Designers aren't here to save the day with design, they're here to be a part of the solution.

Six years ago I wrote a paper called "Citizen Centered Design" in which I tried to make a bridge between design process and public policies.
But after seeing this video, Norman blew my mind one more time. 🙌
