- All over the world, the crypto-wealthy are looking to create blockchain utopias that critics say are just the latest example of colonialism.
In this episode of Cryptoland, Motherboard takes you to 'Floating Man,' a wild multi-day festival for believers in Liberland, a Bitcoin-powered micronation located in a contested patch of land between Croatia and Serbia that technically doesn't exist.

I came here to learn how to invest after listening to a guy on radio talk about the importance of investing and how he made $460,000 in 4 months from $160k, somehow this video has helped shed light on some things, but I'm still confused, I'm a newbie and I'm open to ideas.
Investing in stocks and crypto is a good idea, a good trading system would put you through many days of success.
It is possible to produce superior performance provided you do something different from the majority. However most of us tend to pay more attention to the shiniest position in the market to the cost of proper diversification.
Having monitored my portfolio performance which has made a jaw dropping $370k from just the past two quarters alone, I have learned why experienced traders make enormous returns from the seemingly unknown market.
@@wilsonbrown8993 Interesting, I have a lump sum doing absolutely nothing at all in my bank account, I wanna get something started with it. You seem to be doing excellent for yourself, how do you achieve this?
@@louisclifford9874 Exactly, the trick is to diversify your investment, don't panic when everyone else is and invest consistently.
You don't claim land with flags, but with the ability to defend its borders (possibly with international recognition and help). The choice for this strip of land was probably a wise one, given that Serbs and Croats hold each other in check on land claims.
Why they dont buy a land half to Croatia half to Serbia
This is the kind of world 🌎 we’ve made for ourselves and our children, better have no enemies when the light goes out ,due to the economic crisis, wars and rate of unemployment I think now is the best time to invest and make more money for the future
@Mehul Choksi After watching so many RUclips tutorial videos about trading I was still making losses at first until Mr George started managing my investments now I make ₹110,567 weekly. God bless Sir George he has been a blessing to my family
@Chatura Kalaris Amazing I also just started trading with Mr George Harrison, with an initial investment of ₹60,400 India in rupees made up to 6 lakhs in just a week of trading with George,Sir George strategies are mind blowing
@Aadi Brijesh Bitcoin is the true decentralized cryptocurrency to ever exist in the world. I’m actually new to trading in bitcoin and can say authoritatively it’s an aspect of gaining financial freedom.
@Stella Nguyen You’re right the market is profiting if you’re using really a good broker or account manager to help out with trades or prove signals
if the lights goes out so does your internet money.
I really like this series. It's been a while since a new episode went up, but I hope more are coming.
This “journalist” keeps trying to put words in peoples mouths. I hate that crap. That scene with the police “trying to stop them” was ridiculous and what kept happening throughout. They weren’t trying to stop them. Cut it out bro.
I know, it happened so many times. Embarrassing.
Anyone else think the reporter is a complete tool? "I want to speak to the police" "Were being stopped by Croatian Police", "Were not being stopped, I wan't to talk to them", "Oh Were actually not being stopped" lmao. Genius
Also no one in El Salvador is forced to use bitcoin. BTC is legal tender in El Salvador. legal tender means "all debts maybe be paid using this method". Not you have to pay, vendors have to accept it. You can immediately liquidate if you choose to.
I'm glad such communities exist. We Libertarians are a small minority of the whole population. To find like-minded people to invest with, and to share culture with, is priceless.
I'm glad it exists too, that way you guys can waste your time energy and resources on this crap and be less detrimental to the rest of society.
@@blakewisswell By definion "detrimental" actions are the ones who deplete others from resources or their bodies against their will, like thieves, rapists, murderers or states. Libertarians are the ones who support voluntaryism.
The roundtable at the end is so unbelievably misinformed it questions the journalistic integrity of the piece
Describing El Salvador switch to Bitcoin as "colonial" while it is a nation that was LITERALLY dollarized - meaning they had to use the US dollar rather than their own sovereign currency.
Oh and most of their remittances which was a significant % of GDP traveling through Western financial corporations is now no longer subject to rent seeking thanks to settlement on crypto asset network

Really, why would that be?
It is a great idea. It is like bringing the US Declaration of Independence into full fruition. To reclaim the freedoms lost by controlling Governments and to have more liberty is a great thing
Libertarians want minimal state, not absense of a state

im pretty disappointed with vice's crypto show. i was pretty excited at first, but again and again they drop the ball on these stories. might write a thread on it.

How is a country adopting bitcoin a form of colonialism? Not sure how they are coming to that conclusion. I suppose if they adopted the US dollar then it wouldn't be colonialism?
Cognitive dissonance.
They cover this in the video. The point they're making is that outside agents have implemented the switch to bitcoin, and all the infrastructure that needs and are profiting from that. So, a lot like colonialists of the past, they're showing up to a foreign country, introducing an 'industry' and profiting from it. Like rubber plantations The Congo, etc.
It's the land they're trying to steal is colonialism.
@@matthewrowley
The counterargument would be, that it is an open source software.
Most of the applications in the "crypto industry" are an open source software.
Chivo is an example for that, the government did a copy-paste of the strike API, the only need to configure the UX, but the application/ATMs/collateral is owned/operated by the government.
Edit: spelling.
and having dollars in El Salvador isnt a colonial practice?
afaik, around the year 2000 or so, El Salvador's government decided to abandon its currency (Colon) and go all-dollar because its own money was not only no good for business, it was ruinous. Dollars were the "real" money that was accepted everywhere. They then gave up their monetary sovereignty for this.
Ok, this feels like Far Cry 5...
As an attendee, I cringed at this--it was typical distortion for whatever purpose, I don't know.
I don’t know anything about liberland but I do know that Vice always do this. It’s not honest journalism.

Like building infrastructure?
@@vintagevga7547 until they build the infrastructure THEY need and you get nothing. And have no say about it because money=votes.
It is a very naive assumption that a different currency will create a different world. We need a new mentality that assumes that it is in the best interest of everyone that money is just a form of energy that people have to have access to, if they have dreams to accomplish. People need to have goals and dreams to build up a better live for themselves. And currency has to be what the names says: something current, something flowing, moving from one to another and not get stuck at the few that are neurotic anyway. We need to rethink reality and common life in general.

You can program the blockchain to do whatever you want. If some libertarians make things their way, it does not mean that a socialist cannot code their own governance token and do "socialand" or something and be as they want.
The good thing about blockchain is that will allow transparency and eventually privacy as well. (it is not private at the moment)

How can they say it's colonialism - More accurate to describe it as a shift in currency and more specifically a shift away from a deflationary currency. No matter what the change is, there will always be a group that benefit more than others, due to being early adopters, having a bigger stake but moving to a deflationary currency will surely be beneficial for the countries finances as well as the people over time.
the only value that crypto has is the value put in by government issued bonds (cash). crypto without it is worthless/meaningless. sooo non deflationary sounds nice but its not a real concept. you sound better makinf a ad for a rug puller of 200x your money with this new coin/nft

Connecting taxes to votes seems wrong in many ways... But maybe it could make sense in a tiny island-size "nation" - if there is a hotel and two shops, might as well put them in power of everything since they _are_ everything lol. Not very friendly to regular citizens though, I doubt they'll get many of those, and will forever be just a quirky place to visit in Croatia/Serbia.

Here's the problem.... Crypto is de facto NOT linked to real estate. It is the opposite. So I get the libertarian anti gvt. idea. But crypto is exactly the opposite and it does not require physical land, sovereignty, passports, borders....
Future tax haven?
Nope. Very unlikely. Libertarians aren't known for getting shit together. Individually, yes. As a group, they end up being laughing stocks.
They're going to get arrested and I'm going laugh.

In the conversation about El Salvador they leave out a key piece of information: El Salvador doesnt have its own currency. It used US Dollars... so exposing themselves to cryptocurrency by way of Bitcoin, not only removes reliance on the US, but also allows them to come up with monetary policies not contingent on the US. So suggesting its a form of colonialism is a bit misleading considering they were already economically beholden to the US, without benefiting entirely from the US banking infrastructure (as in they dont have access to Venmo, Cashapp, etc...).

Connecting votes to taxes makes in a way. However, rather than voting on general policies and elections, I think it makes more sense to connect the voting power to how the taxes are spent. It's baffling how somebody who didn't pay taxes gets to influence how my money is spent (through electing certain individuals). If you don't pay taxes to contribute to society, you shouldn't have a say so in how the money is spent from those that do.
@@veneering4128
People that don't work, make less than the limit threshold, or work under the table, don't pay income taxes meanwhile having a say in how other people's taxes are spent and enjoying the benefits.
Also, billionaires that pay zero in taxes would get zero say in how the taxes from people who did pay are spent. I don't see the issue here.
Who would of guessed that a system that rewards people equal to the amount they contributed to society would be so controversial and considered a braindead take
