This was the VERY FIRST TAPOUT. The REF didn't understand the message of TAPOUT!. I remember seeing this LIVE. The Feature Fight was Royce Gracie. He did not look like a typical Fighter. Specialist in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Royce weighed maybe about 165 LBs. MAYBE! His opponent Ken Shamrock looked like a 220 pound well chiseled BEAST!! Just when it looked like Shamrock was going to win, Gracie, utilized his GI (uniform) to Choke Shamrock to a TAPOUT. Thereafter they changed the rule on weaponizing the GI (uniform) to defeat an opponent, to be illegal. Those early UFC's, were EFFFING GREAT! Gracie BECAME A STAR! His family started opening Jiu-Jitsu fighting/training Joints all over California and other Major Metro's. To this day, very effective and popular discipline.

It was stacked against Ken from the jump. The whole thing was paid for by the gracies. They were going to make sure their boy won. Look up what Bill superfoot Wallace has had to say about that first UFC event. Ken did tap, no debating that. I went to college with Bill Wallace who did the most impressive physical feat I have ever seen: Wallace, about 5'9", placed a big red delicious apple atop a college basketball player's head and asked the athlete to place his open hands on either side of the apple. The ballplayer was about 6'3". He was cocky, 50 people watching, nervously laughing. Bill measured the distance from his hip up to the apple by extending his arm. A girl counted to three. On "three," the tall boy's palms came together, and Bill held the apple by his hip.

Not to mention how bad the end of his career was..... He got smoked numerous times; you're the only one saying GOAT!
He was a great sensei and made countless millions with business savvy, but he wasn't friendly, didn't ever smile, his had UFC tournaments rigged with Gracie fighters to win, he never showed off his puny physique, which was among the smallest middleweights and LHWs, He didn't win a UFC belt, he only fought a handful of tough guys between Pride and UFC, he PISSED HOT for steroids and they didn't even overturn the fight decision, he purposely fought with modified rules in his fights to favor his stamina, he insisted on Fighting Japanese guys in Japan only if the Japanese guy couldn't win by a judges decision, he had VERY limited striking; if any at all, he was an all-around poor sport/unfriendly, he only fought guys he thought he could beat, he used his grip on guys who didn't wear a gei, he held subs WAY longer than Rousimar Palhares, with zero repercussions, he didn't draw a dime in America and he was an unentertaining fighter across the board, and he got punched out by Matt Hughes in one round.
Not a G.O.A.T, breh. A far better sensei; likely retired at the mere mention of implementing a belt system.

      1) Gracie was old and past both his prime and his days of competing when he faced Hughes. 2) Hughes used a combination of wrestling and BJJ against Royce to control and beat him. Like Royce said post fight, it was something to the effect of “if he beat me the way he did, then we (Gracie BJJ) did our job!” In other words they set out to teach BJJ to anyone who wanted to learn. The risk in doing so is that eventually those you teach your secrets to may beat you down the road at your own game, but it doesn’t matter when the goal of spreading your knowledge and passing on the art is a much worthier cause to your family.

A lot of people don’t realize that not only did Ken make the UFC legit at ufc 1, but he also saves the company after the fertitas and Dana purchased the company when he fought Tito ortiz the first time. That fight not only saved the company, but put the ufc on track to be juggernaut of fighting that it is today.
