I would also like to mention that SCP Containment Breach was the progenitor to Secret Lab (the standalone game), I played an absurd amount of Containment Breach back in the day. That, a ton of Zombie Survival, and some DarkRP. Gmod was the perfect place for me to be for the few years in Middle School and early Highschool when I had no friends, now however, I'm very glad to have friends and not need Gmod. It was too much of a time sink and trying to picture where all those hours went leaves a blank, not anger or sadness, nor good memories, just lost time.

I remember stumbling across RUclips when I was just 8 years old back in 2007, the site basically still an infant at that point. One of the first videos that caught my attention at the time was simple, crude gmod machinimas. As a kid back then, they were immensely entertaining but nothing really showcased Gmod's magic till i came across The Gman Squad series by jsXanatos.
Safe to say that was the series that solidified my interest in Gmod. Almost 2 decades later seeing Gmod's culture change and grow has been amazing and it has been a integral part of my life. Heck, I even remember the day Team Fabulous 2 came out and was floored at how hilarious and high quality it was and still is. Looking back, it's hilarious to see people mad about Skibidi Toilet, seeing how they were probably the kids that binged watched those Nextbot chase videos by MsBreezy or the Venturian Tales addon reviews, or even the early Vanossgaming sandbox videos.
Garry's Mod has always been a HUGE part of RUclips for me, and seeing newer projects like HLVR take off makes me think Gmod will be around for way longer than anyone would have thought.
Thank you Mr. Moldbun for such a great video💙

I'm long since finished with gmod, I'll watch videos from time to time of people trolling RP servers. but the fact of the matter is im 31 and I have far better things to do than mess around with something that I had my glory days with more than 15 years ago back when it was still a free mod, and the very early days of it being a "paid game"
that being said. gmod indirectly led to me meeting a lot of friends who I still know to this day, including a whole arc that led to meeting some IRL, and even dating one of them.

Thank you for this video, GMod will always be special to me.
Not to overstate, but it facilitated so much of what I do, and had a huge impact in my life.
Hope you don't mind me dumping my experience here!
I remember first wanting to try it and being inspired by early machinima animators around 2007-8 when I was 14. Notably Jahosiphat and their "The Gmod Parody" series, and Fncypntz with their fantastic contraption-based puppeteering. And of course DasBoSchitt, who was just getting popular around that time, (and who I later got the chance of helping on a few occasions!)
Doing machinima was fun and challenging, starting out really clunky and refining it more and more over the years. GMod was mostly a solo experience for me, and I just loved turning my ideas into something that felt alive and sharing it with people. I never got very good at the animating itself, but I went after using VFX in my work with a fiery passion and learned a ton about editing and compositing.
Making animations also helped get me through some very difficult times, and sharing them helped make some longtime friends in the process.
I kind of fell off making videos after 2014. Though, at that point I had already been making custom content for a few years, mainly mapping with Hammer. One or two I had uploaded when garrysmod.org was still the go-to. (Thank you 3kliksphilip for your old tutorials!)
The amount amount of technical knowledge about the engine I developed over time is excruciating, to say the least. Facepunch forums was a good place to lurk and trade mapping advice with others. I spent soooo much time in the mapping megathread there, haha.
I've also done 3D modeling off and on for the last 10 years, mainly because of wanting to port and create custom props for GMod to use in machinimas and maps. Making 3D assets and vehicles specifically is kinda my main hobby now, some of which are on the Workshop (...and have been used in Skibidi Toilet, lmao)
Granted, it's also great being able to take everything I've learned and help out friends with their projects!
Honestly, nearly everything I know about content creation, as well as my creative process generally, is firmly rooted in GMod and the Source engine.
It's an ancient tower of duct tape, but was always charming and has so much staying power. It's crazy to see how much people have squeezed out of it.
I'm glad even people a decade or more younger than me are still making so many great memories with it!

The fact people keep actively extending what's possible in the game (A good example being the InfMap base mentioned in the video. Or honestly literally anything made by Meetric) even to this day will probably never stop being amazing to me.
I've been playing gmod for almost 13 years, and when I started there was already a pretty huge amount of content for it. It feels like everything that could be done should've already been done by now, but I keep seeing new things that I thought were either impossible, or at least impossible to do *well*. Though I suppose it helps that we're now entering an era where a lot of the adults playing the game actively grew up with it.

As someone who made a (unfinished) horror series almost entirely made in gmod, i have to say that Garry's Mod is one of the best tools for expressing creativity. It's also a great game. You can do goofy shit with friends one day and start a serious project based on gmod the second day. I think that the only game that got close to doing what gmod did was minecraft, but unlike minecraft gmod has everything in one place. You don't have to use any external software to mkae animations in gmod, and that's why i think it's so amazing.

The chaotic gmod absurdity we loved back in the old days has been left behind, as well as the sm64 part of the videos. smg4 has become an unfortunate casualty of the shifting of meme culture in combination with their own style moving away from what made them great in the first place. commentary of the video:
    1. 0:59 yes, garry's mod is not a game in the traditional sense. this is not new information. the steam description literally states "There aren't any predefined aims or goals. We give you the tools and leave you to play." saying this is like saying minecraft is a game entirely made of blocks. not a profound statement.
    2. 1:10 there are many games with a large playerbase and modding communites that have been around for long periods of time. trainz railroad simulator, MSFS, the half life series, minecraft, quake, elder scrolls, etc. only one of which is not older than Gmod or half life 2. Gmod is not special in this regard. we've had the internet for a while now, it's nothing to write home about.
    3. 1:49 HL2 is not the first game with a physics system. first with a good, practical physics system maybe, but not first. it wasn't an innovation in any other way either. the graphics were passable for 2003 at best with many other games with similar release dates fairing on par if not better. it holds up graphics wise because photorealism has plateaued. the gameplay was nothing spectacular either. barebones gunplay with simple physics puzzles every once in a while. neither was the writing; HL1 was innovative for its narrative, which tons of other games proceeded to do as well. even disconnected from the lack of innovation, the writing on it's own wasn't *good.* it was a basic power fantasy go in - go out, with the majority of it being an NPC hand holding you while giving patronizing narration for shit that's right in front of you like it's an episode of dora the explorer. it completely ignores its role as a sequel, with the only references to HL1 being names, lip service, and cheap jokes. people blow smoke up its ass because of tf2/gmod nostalgia.
    4. 5:14 see 1.
    5. 6:06 wow i'm so glad that valve invented the launcher/package manager. truly the second coming of christ, and totally wholly unique to source games.
    6. 6:43 see 1.
    7. 11:20 lmao. "gmod culture" okay, maybe it's significant on the internet. my god, it's like you've just found out that video games and the internet exist. Gmod is not the only popular game with mods. how many times do i have to say it? and wow, "culturally significant content" (youtube channels) get big off of video games, shocker.
    8. 11:15 yes. animation is pretty famous for being hard work.
    9. 12:52 do you really think that nobody has been hired to do promotional animations before? that aside, yes, i know you meant SFM animator. it's still an animation. SFM is an animation software. they hired a guy with skill and a history with animations to make an animation.
    10. 13:28 i mean, there's no way you actually think that's special. (even among video games.) for god's sake, you could make a story with a train set, camera, and a piece of paper. something mind blowing, but you don't need anything to make a story. you could make any story you want with this incredible innovation, get this, WRITING!
    11. 13:36 see 7.
    12. 14:00 you spent the last 7 minutes talking about gmod animations. it is well established that people can make animations with gmod.
    15. 17:34 see 7.
    16. 18:08 see 10.
    17. 18:50 glitch is wonderful for the opportunity it has given to indie animation to make grand, high production scale works, i agree.
    18. 20: 02 see 7.
    19. 20:51 see 10. you've already said this.
    20. 20:59 see 7.
    21. 21:18 see 10.
    22. 23:26 it's called a trend.
    23. 26:40 really? you really think that no game in the history of games has even come close to gmod's impact? in any way? none in particular?
    24. 27:50 see 1.
conclusion: look. i love Gmod just as much as the next guy. i am aware that it is an extremely influential game. i, too, have many fond memories with it. but for the love of god, stop acting like Gmod and other source games are the second coming of christ of which are wholly alone in their greatness in every way. people blow so much smoke up valve's ass because of nostalgia.

Wish you mentioned ScoutFIN. They rivaled Eltorro64rus in quality for me sometimes, and Fahd a quite good upload schedule.
They stopped posting suddenly about a year ago😢… I really hope they’re okay, but sometimes you just can’t help but think of the worst case scenario when someone just suddenly disappears like that.

Idk about you but i'm surprised to see there's no real customizable team deathmatch mode. One where server owners can set spawn points for both teams on each map, and can customize the weapons they spawn with, their HUD, their player model and so on. Or hell, even adding a buy menu like Counter-Strike, but instead of buying that game's weapons, you buy custom SWEPs with the gamemode's currency.
Gmod has yet to have a real deathmatch game mode with high customization for server owners.

ngl, calling it "sandbox" would be like shooting the game in the head, it's such a common word, it's not googleable and has no personality to it. when someone says GMod, you picture exactly the kind of history and humor behind it, that is actually there.
