Thank you for this course. Last night I had a conversation with the other people in my house about why they were so sure they were awake and not dreaming - it was fun to hear their perspectives.
As for right now, I seem to be awake because everything I inspect looks and feel as I'd expect; when I noticed smoke going by my window I was able to look out and find a sensible source for it (a bbq in next door's garden attended by the neighbours I recognise); I can remember how I got here and what I've been doing earlier; cause and effect seem to be working usually (I'm typing this, I can play and pause the video, the ticking I can hear is from my clock). This is all distinct from the kind of logic in my dreams last night where I'm in rooms or beds I don't recognise, but do not find it unusual or logic may shift from one moment to the next, e.g. In one moment I'm watching a cartoon and then it's partly live action and then I have an object from the cartoon in my hands which turns out to be an Easter egg which I'm part way eating and suddenly disappointed as I think "I'm supposed to be eating healthily"!
My dream recall last night was decent with several distinct dreams across two long periods of sleep. However, I'm very aware of some forgetfulness - when I was drifting into sleep, I immediately started going into strange, changey dreams which were distinct to the experience of lying in my bed. I remember that this happened both times when I was falling asleep, but I cannot recall the content.

How to be sure that I am awake? Continuity, things seem to be as usual, a special kind of feeling clear, shadows are at the right place, remembering why I am in a special situation, what I did before, and before that. Gravity is working, things like that. But I cannot be sure, I can only assume that I am awake.

The only reason I thought I knew I wasn't dreaming was because of how familiar I was with this environment, but as I continued to ponder I thought that that was how I would feel in my dreams, then struggled to find other reasons for why I thought I knew I wasn't dreaming.
But for now I've devoted a section of my dream journal to notes for your so far great videos about 9 pages, I do have some prior knowledge from your other videos but I've decided to go about this step by step, knowing what I need to know at certain times to not overwhelm my mind with different ways of going about things.

Here are some of the excuses I have on why I assume I am awake.
-everything looks, feels, tastes and hears real. So i must be awake (Source: trust me bro)
-i spend most of my life awake so there is no reason to ask if I am dreaming. (This is stupid because we spend a third of our life's sleeping. Not only that, but there is a 1/10 chance I could be dreaming RIGHT NOW. So it's not unreasonable to occasionally ask if I am dreaming)
-lack of belief that lucid dreaming exists. (Again, it's stupid because it's been scientifically verified)
There is probably more. But these are the ones that I can remember. I can't wait for lesson 3

    Doing good so far!
I think I'm awake because I just ate breakfast and it tasted normal. Normally I can't taste things in dreams. I know what I'm doing, why I'm in the room I'm in, etc. And that normally isn't present in my dreams.

...I somehow had a lucid dream last night! I became lucid because I looked at the course playlist (for this course) in the dream and realised there was 3 lessons in it, not one :) And then I realised that the date in the dream was when the first lesson was uploaded (which for some reason was the 9th of June, in my dreams the date is nearly always wrong)! I'm not sure what I did after that. Though, the dream was not vivid and it only lasted for about 30 - 60 seconds... but it's only my 2nd lucid dream I've ever had.
And I'm awake right now because:
-Nothing weird is happening right now.
-It's normal for me to do this. I watch your videos quite a lot and when I do, it's quite similar to what's happening right now.
-I know why everything around me is there and I know why I'm doing this.

When I consider how I know, I am not dreaming most of the time the most salient indicator is the consistency. I am aware that everything around me is the same as it was moments ago and days before. For example, I still have the scratch on my arm that I got last weekend. my experience with dreams is that details like that are always in flux people, things, environments, etc. change with regularity. I only notice it after I wake up. But at the moment, everything is stable and consistent.

The issue I commonly face isn't dream recall but dream recording. Due to my surroundings, I can't really voice record my dreams and I kind of hate recording dreams where they don't have anything fantastical going on. To be honest, it was hard to record the dreams I had last night (factors which I'll talk about later), but, I have most of them written down. I'm going to try not to be a twaddle-head in this series and hopefully my own self-imposed nerf will be taken away!
Last night I kept waking up in the middle of the night and, at one of those points, I had a sweet dream I remembered that I kept repeating to myself before I fell back asleep. This morning all I could recall of it was "electro". I have no clue what that means, but, I had 2 (now 4, an interaction with someone and strangly this video made me remember 2 more) dreams that I could write down. This is basically just confirming what Daniel was saying about sleep erasing memories (I almost had a complete lucid erased due to this!) so be careful (and write down your dreams!)
Now, the factors that prevented me from writing down my dreams as soon as I woke up. On Friday, I had an anxiety attack that kept on for an hour and I've felt sick since them. I actually wanted to quit lucid dreaming last night but I wouldn't be "good" if I did. This morning, I woke up feeling sick and felt sicker if I thought about dream journaling. Not only this but I know my diet has been off and I had too much sleep (11 hours in the past 24 hours). It's probably clear why my dreams were able to be recalled but I felt really out of it this morning - all were anxiety or anger based. Anxiety and overfill the body with chemicals and I'm sure that's what's making me feel sleepy but keeping my mind hyper focused. The mood tracker is definitely something I'll have to do waking up from here on out!
Anyway, great video and I'm here again for the check-in! I'll have to rewatch this video again as I was jotting down dream parts as I remembered them! Loving this series so far as I don't feel all the pressured to know everything in order to interact with the video!

Day 2 of my journey: I have been using loud alarm clock for a year before I realize that it can stop dream recalling, this explains well how I only remembered 3-4 dreams a year even when I wrote my dream journal. Also I know that it's the real world when I see no change in the physical appearances of things around me.

I do think this is the waking world. Because it has no similarity whatsoever of my dreams. I'm just sitting around, writing this list. I'm in my room, the place where only a few hours ago I woke up. I wrote in my dream journal, had breakfast and now I'm here. I can remember everything and it is totally logical and normal.

Just to be strict here, and for your benefit, you're jumping ahead in the lessons - as that was not was was suggested in the homework - and this won't do you any favours and might hold you back. There is a reason things are being laid out in the way they are in these lessons, so it's important to follow as laid out. Try not to assume jump ahead in the way you assume things will go. That is like trying to bake a cake before you've cracked any eggs or opened the flour.

Yes, I want you to think deeply and with critical thinking about why you assume you are awake, on as many occasions as you can throughout the day, and to record your dreams. Those are your priorities for now. I know it's tempting to take what you've learnt elsewhere and apply it in advance, but try to avoid that. Think of this like a recipe, each step has it's right place and time.

I feel like I'm awake now because I have clear memories of yesterday and past events, which shows me there is a continuum to my life, whereas dreams for me are more disjointed without any kind of continuum. But of course, I don't remember much of my dreams, so maybe there is a kind of continuum to them. Hopefully, I'll discover the answer.

I recently dreamed a friend saying, "Too bad it's already November, we missed the chance to hang out." And I thought, "What, November already? Wow, I thought it was earlier in the year! Wasn't it just August?" But I checked the nearby calendar and it did indeed say November, quashing my doubt.
Why do I assume I'm awake right now? I can recount what happened today, yesterday, the week before, and I can look back at my notes for the time beyond without any suspicious gaps.
Dream journaling is such a powerful tool. I've been journaling for about four months now, and I'm honestly amazed that I'm able to look back at dreams from months back and still remember scenes and imagery for most of them that would've been nigh-impossible had they not been written down.

I believe I am currently awake for a number of reasons. The first being that everything is in the correct place at my house, nothing being placed out of the ordinary. The second being that I remember how I got to where I am currently, as well as where I went and when today. The third being that everything looks, and feels the way it should.

I think I'm awake, because I remember everything I did during the day up to this point, but also because I feel no anxiety whatsoever. I my dreams anxiety is present almost always and I just treat that as a big red flag that I might be dreaming.
As for last night, the only thing I remember is I was on a beach and there were five really large giraffes, I was just watching and admiring them. Very weird stuff :)

This is invaluable stuff your putting out.
I dont think im currently in a dream because everything throughout the day happened as usual per my routine. Still, I kept trying to find reasons to challenge the notion of whether or not i was actually dreaming. I take a good long look at my hands and myself in the mirror, hyper focus on the sensations I felt in my body.
I really tried to *feel* it as much as i could. It definitely put me in a weird state of mind but it undoubtedly had an impact on my dream experience last night.
1 of my many dreams last night involved my beloved dog Lola. (one of the few dreams i was able to recall) I had heard a bark outside our house. Which was strange because i had already seen my dog a few minutes ago. I open the front door to my shock to find an exact copy of Lola that was indistinguishable from the original.
I remeber feeling extremely put off by this and the impossibility of the situation caused a vague sense of lucidity which quickly melted away. I chose to let the Lola inside, so now i had 2 of them. No one in my family seem to be surprised or even care really.
Many other dreams proceeded after this one but cannot fully remember them in detail, maybe faint glimpses and images but no concrete narrative.
Question: Is it normal that when lucidity comes during a dream that the dream melts away almost instantly after realization ? Like your brain realized you were trying to control and cause a reboot. Do you have insight you could share ?
    Thanks for the great video!

To answer your question, yes that is perfectly normal - and very common. This and ways to resolve it will be covered in future lessons. For now stick with the homework, as everything is being laid out in a very structured (and planned) approach - so it's not something to concern yourself with just yet.

One of the reasons I feel like I’m “awake” is because I can actually type properly. Like if I was in a dream even typing one word on my phone or computer would be a very difficult task. Either I keep typing the wrong letter or my dream “autocorrect” replaces it with different word entirely, but in real life it’s super easy to type properly, I also probably wouldn’t be able to write this comment in a dream.
Also in most of my dreams I’m mostly either at work, high school (I graduated a year ago), watching some weird movie or TV show, or even in a random assortment of infinite rooms. Right now I’m in my bedroom and everything seems the way it should be, so that’s one of the reasons I feel like I’m awake.

I am awake because I can tell I am in control of where I am and what am doing. Too many times I've had dreams where I get overwhelmed by the hectic almost undending pace of different visions that are presented to me. It gets even worse when I become slightly aware of that in the dream. In fact, the worst nightmare I've ever had was feeling I will be stuck forever in my dreams, the successive visions pulling me further and further away from the exit all while getting me lost in an unending maze of thoughts and ideas.

Hello, this is gonna sound crazy
ive been tryin to lucid dream for the past two weeks and yesterday after watching the first tutorial in this series i might have done it, i woke up in the middle of the night, wrote in my journal, and then I combined that mild technique that I learned from your videos and multiple other videos talking about it and your dreamwalker technique to fall asleep, and then in the dark i did a reality check without moving by blocking my own nasal passage with diaphragm muscles and trying to breathe (thing i learned from FILD tutorial from Explore lucid dreaming yt channel) so I realised i was dreaming but i wasn able to realise that i didnt take the time to develop full awareness of my control in the dream and not being fully critical of the dream so maybe it was a fake lucid dream but I used multiple reality checks like: That Blocked nose check, the digital wrist clock check, and hand check and from what i can remember and they all failed so it was cool, After waking up i did a quick reality check, wrote my dream experience in the dream journal and went on with the day.
Today i think that the reasons why i am not dreaming are
-Because when I do multiple reality checks they seem real
-It seems that I can not breathe through a closed nose or closed nasal passage using my diaphragm to close it
-The environment around me seems to stays the same when I look back after averting my gaze
-I seem to be able to feel pain
-It seems that When I will something in existence it does not appear
-I seem to know where I have been prior, through memory, it seems I know why I am here, and I probably have a vague idea of what i am most likely to do in the future
Even though i provided all of these reasons, I am still questioning reality itself and trying to be present most of the times.
And I could even be dreaming right now as of writing this and my mind is convincing itself that these reasons are true
Reality itself could be fake but I feel that dreaming world is not the same as the waking world
I am slowly learning the difference between them, I am very grateful for discovering lucid dreaming, this channel and many others like it as well as having the experience of a semi lucid dream last night.

    Alright, first homework report.
Homework 1: I did record last night's dreams, though the pickings were pretty sparse, so I additionally wrote down a dream I'd like to have. One dream suddenly returned to me (at last partially) later in the day, though. Homework 2: I tried to not simply resort to my usual reality tests, but approach it as if I was completely new to the topic. I mostly tried to question what my senses were telling me and if there was anything unusual, illogical, unbelievable etc. about that I was experiencing.
Here is why I think I'm awake right now:
The apple I just ate tasted just like I would expect an apple to taste.
The lighting is right for this time of day, and the shadows look like a natural result of the lighting.
My ankle friggin' hurts, and I do not experience true pain in my dreams.
My hair is short, and since this is a very new thing, I expect to still have long hair in my dreams for a while.
I can hear two dogs barking, noises of several cars, music from next door, some neighbors talking in their garden, my husband watching a documentary downstairs, the beeping of an alarm from somewhere farther away etc. Noises are never quite as overwhelming in dreams as they are in real life. Same is true for all my other senses - too MUCH for a dream.
My fingers are still stained from the painting I did yesterday.
There don't seem to be gaps in my memories.
Btw, since you featured in my last lucid, I also had to draw you in my creative dream journal. Geez, it's HARD to achieve any kind of likeness in a quick sketch, but I think it at least somewhat looks like you.

Back for day 2, I am an experienced beginner in Lucid Dreaming (who also wants to become a Lucid Dream Researcher) I am starting my practice again from scratch taking in your theory as a guide as I believe it is the most suitable for scientific people like me. I have had about a dozen lucid dreams in my life, on a not so regular basis. But I can tell reality and a dream apart because of the warping and shifting nature of a dream. Something like the clock changing time dramatically having only looked away for a moment, specks on the wall that look off every time. So, I do this little analysis first, and then at the same time as I take a moment to question if I'm wrong, I perform a couple tests.
    Thanks for the Great Series.

Reasons I think I’m not dreaming:
I feel a flow to my day
I have conversations that make sense and have an outcome (wanted or not)
I look out of my bedroom window and always see the house across the street with the same door.
I’ve asked my bed to make itself but it won’t
    It just feels continuously real
The thing is I’m aware that what feels real to me doesn’t necessarily feel real to everyone else so I’m open to the this question and very much looking forward to exploring it.
I’ve decided to become a member after yesterday’s tutorial and my dreams last night. Don’t know if I was lucid because I’m not 100% sure what that is just yet but they were plenty, vivid and at very, very tiny moments felt controlled. Excellent!

The reason why I think I am awake is because my cognitive function is very good/ high right now in the middle of the day. In addition to that, everything look in place and everything looks normal/ not out of place. Secondly I think I am awake because my senses feel very real. Thank you Daniel for this series. I am enjoying this series and am interested to learn how to lucid dream.
Edit: I guess to put it simply throughout the 24 hour day I am only dreaming for a little bit of time and mostly awake so my brain assumes that this is real life because it makes my day simpler and easier and kind of like AI as I am not really thinking whether I am dreaming so I automatically think I'm not dreaming.

Thank you for this course. I have been trying to lucid dream for just over 2 months and have got close but not achieved my goal yet. As to whether I am awake right now the following probabilities indicate that I am not asleep or dreaming. Things appear normal: i.e. no dead relatives; time seems chronogical, apart from memory or imaginative speculation; no pink elephants; no flying, floating or breathing underwater. Object retain their solidity and appear unchanged: sky is blue, leaves are gree, pain - solid object hitting solid object - seems very real. Scenery and place remain stable and don't fluidly change suddenly. Fantasy generally not present or, if so, is confined to memories or imaginative speculation and daydreaming.

Lately, I’ve been using my heartbeat to see/sense of I’m awake. It makes me more aware during the routines and conversations throughout the day. I’ve just started doing this over the last 4 days. Mindfulness and physical heart meditation are helping to become more aware throughout waking times so that I may one day wake up in my routine/normal life dreams.

If you have a Smartwatch, try to let it wake you up with vibration alert (best 10 sec or something with auto off - so you dont have to move at all!) In the past alarm clocks destroyed my dream memory at all. I now have to start at the beginning but thats why iam here :) Thanks so far Daniel!
