Even though this isn't canon, the OVAs were always so beautifully done. As a teen they were kind of bittersweet, seeing as they were more rooted in drama rather than shounen action and humor. As an adult, they're more sweet rather than being bitter because you can appreciate the depth they gave the characters through the dialog and writing. I also appreciate that they used Hiko as a sort of "meta" narrator for the series because he very much sits beside us and describes it as we see it.

You know, Kenshin's story is really cool. Because he alone has ACTUALLY changed the art of swordsmanship (which is methods to kill). Thats a pretty big commitment and intense ass character to be the one who uses martial arts without ever wanting or needing to kill. This can definitely reflect on how we can live our lives in real life. I wonder, is it applicable now?
02:31-02:36 Kenji using the Ryu-Tsui-Sen on Yahiko brings back memories of when Kenshin used the exact same move (and Shishio used the exact same block as Yahiko)in the Kyoto Arc.

2:33 Now that I think about it performing that block with the Sakabatou would be a very bad idea, with a normal sword there would be no problem but since the edge is on the back of this sword if you try to hold it with your hand like that you risk slicing your own hand off Another reason it was the perfect sword for Kenshin, who worried about the life of everyone (including his enemies) while completely disregarding his own
Agreed. That is if he was blocking using the back end. Watching it again, it seems he blocked the attack with the side face of the sword; you can see how he holds the handle with the forward end facing upwards. Even still, it is a risky move if an attack coming downwards could also risk the palm getting cut by the reverse bladed edge. Indeed though, the ideal of such a sword speaks volumes, not wanting to hurt others at the risk of harming yourself instead.
There’s techniques in sword fighting that actually require you grab the blade. In HEMA there’s a technique that calls for you the bond the award by the blade and attack with the handle/pommel, effectively using your sword like a mace when fighting against armor. If you punch down on the sides of the bald beard enough you don’t need to worry about it cutting your hands. Even if it did cut your hands, it’s better to have a slice hand and block the attack than it is to not block the attack at all

If Kenshin would been a bad-selfish-macho guy, Yahiko would left the dojo Kamiya, only to learn sword fencing with him or with other master. its more about understanding and the feelings weight behind every one of his sword swings...yahiko is a genius too..but not in the battle sense..of the heart sense ..he fights with belief and stands for something
I know this isn't canon. But honestly you gotta love Yahiko's marurity as a character. He started off as an arrogant son of samurai who was way too obsessed with proving himself, to someone who can hold his own, and teach others to be the same. Yahiko came from rock bottom. I love his character evolution
Wow! Yahiko looks good as a grown-up! But he's way funnier in his younger version. I did remember him from the TV series as an orphan whose family is of a proud samurai lineage.
Kenji basically has the same hacks or genes as his father lol. Insane speed, also hella strong for such small body, also considerably younger and less training than yahiko.
I hated how this OVA ended, I wasn't surprised when I found out today the actual creator didn't like it either. Kenshin deserves alot of things but death sure ain't one of them
I know Watsuki is in jail now, but it would be awesome to see a series about the first Hiko Seijuro and the birth of the Hiten Mitsurugi. EDIT: he isn't in jail, he was just fined a meager $2000...
Loved the whole movie. and not crying was hard to do. especially when kenshin died in kaoru's arms. why did he have to die??? and the movie had some music from trust and betrayal like "in memories kotowari" i love u kenshin😍😭😭😭
Huh, Hiko's backstory's never mentioned before but he hints that he also had a rough time like Kenshin. It would be interesting to see an OVA of his backstory himself and see what he went through.
Ame Kaze except he was there this OVA was misleading as all hell. In the manga Kenshin was there the whole time only disappearing on occasion when people looking for the Legendary Manslayer appeared but he refused to teach his son the style he learned since he wanted him to not have to look over his shoulder his whole life. He also wanted his son to respect Life and if he were to pick up a sword it would be in defense of the weak and not for the vanity of increasing his own strength. That’s why he didn’t want him to learn the ultimate killing art: The Hiten Mitsuregen Style. Kenji couldn’t understand that in his view his father was a weak man who gave up his sword because he became afraid of it and his own power. Kenji basically fails to see the value in his parents ideals and seeks to become a bigger legend than his father but doesn’t care about the cost.
Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection, known as Rurouni Kenshin: Seisōhen (星霜編 Time?) in Japan, is the second OVA series of the Rurouni Kenshin anime television series, acting as its sequel. It was directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi and written by Reiko Yoshida, and was released in Japan in 2001.
Seijuro Hiko. Kenshin during his Hitokiri days was only strong due to his ruthlessness. Remember that Hiko is also a "hitokiri" so to speak. Also, unlike Kenshin, Hiko has a balanced mind. His sword has more convinction as well as greater restraint than Kenshin did prior to learning the Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki.
Hiko was always stronger than Kenshin not just for his mind but physically as well. That's why his Kujurisosan would always beat kenshins weight and strength.
Heiko changed Shinta into Kenshin.... then through the battles of Kenshin Yahiko learned how to become stronger within himself I think. which is why Kenji could not beat Yahiko. though Kenji had the moves of his father Yahiko knew them better and knew to anticipate them and how to counter them. which makes Yahiko the better swordsmen in this fight.
a good Kamiya Kashin hit broke Hiten Mitsurugi block, only saying...But a lot of factors can happen, like the experience of the 2 duelists, and Yahiko is a real master swordsman already here.
Dawson Breek Brooooo, this is hands down one of the best animes ever created. Watch it in this order: Trust and Betrayal; Rurouni Kenshin series and finally Reflection.
@@daywalker3068 He never said he hated it just that this was a different approach and that in real life he probably would have had a sad death. He though he went through so much shit that he gave him a happier ending instead
if you think about it hiten mitsurugi is lost because kenshin chose to lend his arm to the imperialists. if he had stayed with seijuro he would eventually become seijuro hiko XIV.
*spoiler alert!* the ova is set many years after the original rurouni kenshin series.... kaoru and kenshin got married and had a son named kenji... kenshin decides to wander again and kaoru approves it, but it results to kenji to have anger to him and doesn't understand kenshin's beliefs... kenji decides to find hiko seijuro (kenshin's master) and learn sword techniques from him yahiko, upon kaoru's request, tracks him down and thought him a lesson on why kenshin uses a sakabatou
I honestly don’t really get the hate for Reflection. To me, I find it poetic that our badass hero is frail and old, because it reminds us that Kenshin is mortal. I also interpreted it as Kenshin’s past sins as the Hitokiri Battosai coming back to haunt him physically, as well as the strain his body experienced using Hiten Mitsurigi Ryu. Not to mention the ending, where before he dies; he’s called by his real name, Shinta, by Kaoru. He dies in the arms of the woman he loves, the mother of his son, called by his name before his innocence was taken away.
the price of spending so many years fighting returns the favor he was sick, he barely could walk but one thing im sure he didint regret anything in the end. I like this more realistic.
@catishka This is the OVA.... there are 3 Prequels and 3 Sequels.. the prequels detailed how Kenshin became Hitokiri Battousai and the 3 sequels talks about him after the TV series... this is the sequel...

That's right! Thanks for your clarification!
Great words from Yahiko...He is a genius, but I have experience ajjajajaja
its more about understanding and the feelings weight behind every one of his sword swings...yahiko is a genius too..but not in the battle sense..of the heart sense ..he fights with belief and stands for something
I know this isn't canon. But honestly you gotta love Yahiko's marurity as a character. He started off as an arrogant son of samurai who was way too obsessed with proving himself, to someone who can hold his own, and teach others to be the same. Yahiko came from rock bottom. I love his character evolution
Kenji in his adventure needs to become a legend helping people like his father Kenshin did.
Wow! Yahiko looks good as a grown-up! But he's way funnier in his younger version. I did remember him from the TV series as an orphan whose family is of a proud samurai lineage.
This battle never happend, but man... Love the scene and see a adult yahiko ❤
Kenshin's Master was a absolute beast in the beginning of Trust and Betrayel.
IKEEMBLEM Hiko is the strongest character according to the Manga’s author so makes sense he would be a Beast!
he was so overpowered power in the entire series
I remembered this part while rewatching Ep 3 of Rurouni Kenshin, and thought of looking for it. DAMN has Yahiko changed!
Yahiko looking like kyo from samurai deeper
The older animes are much better in story and design than the new.
Kenji basically has the same hacks or genes as his father lol. Insane speed, also hella strong for such small body, also considerably younger and less training than yahiko.
You really have become a fine man, huh, Yahiko? :)
The guy still until now continued the Kenshin Kyoto arc again when the series almost got cancelled because of his crime.
aged like a fine wine
Loved the whole movie. and not crying was hard to do. especially when kenshin died in kaoru's arms. why did he have to die??? and the movie had some music from trust and betrayal like "in memories kotowari" i love u kenshin😍😭😭😭
Huh, Hiko's backstory's never mentioned before but he hints that he also had a rough time like Kenshin. It would be interesting to see an OVA of his backstory himself and see what he went through.
It'd be based in Hiko one shot'ing every enemy.
I've always thought that Kenji was a brat and arrogant. He never really understood the sacrifice that Kenshin made, just that he wasn't there.
+christina113704 Well, how is Kenji supposed to understand an absentee father?
Just in this OVA, the manga was never supposed to be like this!!
disregard this ova alltogether, is non canon thankfully

His sword has more convinction as well as greater restraint than Kenshin did prior to learning the Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki.
sickness324 indeed. I respect Kenshin being the main character that he is. But his master is the most powerful of them all.
Hitokiri is a title given to assassins. Hiko was never a hitokiri
Hiko was always stronger than Kenshin not just for his mind but physically as well.
That's why his Kujurisosan would always beat kenshins weight and strength.
Rip classic movies and anime
Thats that hattori hanzo steel right there.
2:01 the sound of kenshin's broken boombox?
i've never seen this anime. It looks amazing :>
Dawson Breek Brooooo, this is hands down one of the best animes ever created.
Watch it in this order: Trust and Betrayal; Rurouni Kenshin series and finally Reflection.
Why don't people like reflections? The guy who wrote and Drew Rurouni Kenshin saw it as an alternate yet more realistic ending
I thought he said he absolutely hated the ending and thought Kenshin should have a happily ever after
@@daywalker3068 He never said he hated it just that this was a different approach and that in real life he probably would have had a sad death. He though he went through so much shit that he gave him a happier ending instead
if you think about it hiten mitsurugi is lost because kenshin chose to lend his arm to the imperialists. if he had stayed with seijuro he would eventually become seijuro hiko XIV.
Kamiya Kashin style defeated Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu at the end...
it wasn't for the style. it's how you will do it
Good to see Yahiko grown up.
the last moments of hiten mitsurugi, this brings back memories.
*spoiler alert!*
the ova is set many years after the original rurouni kenshin series.... kaoru and kenshin got married and had a son named kenji...
kenshin decides to wander again and kaoru approves it, but it results to kenji to have anger to him and doesn't understand kenshin's beliefs...
kenji decides to find hiko seijuro (kenshin's master) and learn sword techniques from him
yahiko, upon kaoru's request, tracks him down and thought him a lesson on why kenshin uses a sakabatou
We shouldn't have seen him die or begin wandering again.
i prefer the original story over this its to sad and how could you kill kenshin off like that, he is the reason people love it so much
the price of spending so many years fighting returns the favor he was sick, he barely could walk but one thing im sure he didint regret anything in the end. I like this more realistic.
Good thing this wasn't canon. Even the author couldn't accept Kenshin's fate.
brute strength, tactics and heart, thats what a real fighter is
Sebastian kolroW u look gay
@catishka This is the OVA.... there are 3 Prequels and 3 Sequels.. the prequels detailed how Kenshin became Hitokiri Battousai and the 3 sequels talks about him after the TV series... this is the sequel...
