- An estimated 150,000 Filipino nurses work in the US, earning up to 30 times more than they could back home.
But at what cost?
Many nurses work long hours, some juggling multiple jobs to support their families. Others are exploited, intimidated and forced into indentured labour.
Now Filipino nurses are on the front lines of New York's COVID-19 crisis, some losing their lives as they battle to keep Americans alive. Meanwhile, the Philippines is facing a dire shortage of medical workers at this critical time.
101 East investigates the price of chasing the American Dream.

3 years ago I had open heart surgery. 8 days in ICU and was well taken care by the Filipina nurses. I really appreciated their professionalism and their caring nature which made my stay tolerable.
In Singapore, after SARS, the Filipino nurses were given resident status. Their services were clearly appreciated be the Singapore Government.
lol my country men got treated better in Singapore than in their home country! 🤣👍
Were they not given Citizenship if they wanted too? just resident status?
I worked with Filipinos in medicine in the US (SF Bay Area) for 24 years. Awesome people and the most caring loyal nurses. I admired them so much that this year I moved here. I now live in Cebu, the Philippines. Not everyone is perfect, but I’m am surrounded by awesome people daily now. 🇺🇸🇵🇭
Awesome! I hope you enjoy Cebu!
that's where I came from.
Wow..stay safe out there in cebu
I Miss Cebu....
There is wonderful place in Talisay.
It's Girls Town Sisters Marry School.
You may experience the miracles in real there. Stay happily at Cebu.
I guess every hospital in the US has Filipino Nurse except in Grey's Anatomy.😂
🤣🤣🤣True!
I have to agree..
Not every hospital
grey's anatomy SUCKS!!!
😂😂😂😂..SO TRUE
We love our Filipino nurses here in Australia! All my children were delivered by Filipina mid-wives, what you get is extra care.
@Crystalised Being point taken, I'm just speaking from experience. In regards to your experience I can't say I disagree as it is not fair...
Salute from Taiwan
I also love NYC very much.
Filipino house nurseries and friends give numerous attributes the construction in Taiwan.
Sincere Appreciations to Filipino friends.

Most Americans don't want that job. That's why the opportunities are presented to the willing, the Filipinos. You should be greatful that they are the best in what they do. Compassionate and industrious professionals.
There are a shitload of jobs that americans doesn't want to do, so I can't understand why the yanks can't provide work visas to sikhs, africans, hispanics and latinos.
@@sanyonazyin6063 Filipinos is enough
@@zeparthe16thspiritofarsgoe15 Okey I really hope that the filipinos can work the vinyards in Napa, the Citrus fields in the Coachella Valley and the Dairy farms.

@@zeparthe16thspiritofarsgoe15 So can mexicans and africans. And I think it's unfair that the u.s simply refuse to put everyone in the same light.

We should boycott Greys Anatomy. Discrimination against the real caregiving Nurses of America.

One of the hospital that heads their COVID19 frontline is a Filipina doctor! Keep safe our CO-ASEANs! We'll all beat COVID19! We'll all survive this!

Thank you Filipino medical frontliners - doctors, nurses, ambulance crew, technicians, hospital kitchen staff, all...THANK YOU! God bless you all!
Filipino nurses are really hard working and they do their job with devotion. I am Pakistani but I have many Filipino friends and I saw this first hand. Filipino nurses should be assertive. They are very polite and don't question authorities. Which results in abuse sometimes. Hats off for Filipino nurses.
Give Filipinos and other medical staff a bonus..
Filipinos are the “green berets” of nursing. The best.

Shoutout to the Filipina Nurse who take good care of me when I was hospitalized at Elmhurst, Sharon and Nancy.they are the best Filipino nurse ever!! Hats off to all the Health Frontliners. Godbless you guys!
Proud to be a filipino. Much love from state of Alaska
They're shouting "Black Lives Matter" but they don't acknowledge enough the Filipino nurses who are saving their country, fighting the invisible enemy. Filipino nurses are truly heroes
Filipinos aren't considered black even though americans also called them the N-word when they colonized the Philippines. :(
Ive heard this all over the world. Cause they dont complain they just keep on working. And this can be prone to lack of appreciation and abuse

Filipino nurses are the best!! They work hard, they don't complain , they're friendly and they appreciate even the smallest of blessings. And sad to say, because they never complain, sometimes they're taken advantage of at work.
May the peace of Allah be with you always. Allah is their strength.
Thanks Aljazeera for putting this together. I came here over 30 years ago with a bunch of my nursing classmates Omicron class 87 . But I am lucky that I work in the cleanest unit , the operating room of a very big university hospital in the West Coast. Anyway,
I Got out of my contract as soon as I can along with a few of my nursing classmates while some stayed in NY and NJ and were in the frontline over there. Some got infected but thank goodness no one died.I am proud of my classmates for what they have done and are doing there during this pandemic
.Our Dean ,Madam Sisno would be proud.
I do feel sad and upset for the other Filipino nurses who being taking advantage of . This should not happen.
So you graduated in CDC??? I am an alumna too :)

I appreciate londoners in Uk because they expressed thier appreciation for the hard working, caring, loving, friendly , compassionate, committed Filipino nurses . The frontliners in this current covid nineteen pandemic are unspoken heroes and many of thèm lost thier lives in saving others lives.

Great job AJ. You've gone where no other News channel would even think going. This is a long overdue tribute to the hardest working women on earth. Filipinas are tremendously brave and infinitely giving and caring !!!
As a Marine veteran I use the V.A. Hospital in Calif. most of the veterans are cared for by these loving and caring nurses. They go beyond what are expected of them. As a retired Marine that has had most of my nurses that are Filipino nurses I could never ask for any nurse more caring and professional .

filipino nurses nurse their patients with love and care.

Saludo kami sa inyo mga kababayan naming frontliners! We'll keep praying on you every day for your safety out there!
Most Filipinos are not assertive, we don't usually aspire for higher positions because it's just huge responsibility to look after other colleagues and stress. We just want to work and we give our heart into that.
Haha for the increase pay with the added stress it sure isnt. I remember that at an old job. A dollar more for more responsibility no thanks. Which also decreased as minimum wage went up so it became like 50 cents more.
Smart!
May the peace of Allah be with you always. Allah is your strength.
Hey 🌹❤️
2 of my sister in laws are frontliners in USA, I am proud of them..
Thank you to all the Filipino nurses around the world. From UAE to the US to the UK...everywhere. To the empathy they display, to the hospitality that they exhibit, to their kindness and good nature. Sad that their good nature causes them to be taken advantage of. Being away from their families to take care of people of other nationalities- doing jobs many people wouldn't want to do. Thank you so much. Some of us understand the struggles they are going through especially to be so far away from home. It makes me so angry that certain companies take advantage of them. I hope those of us in power do what we can to support these heroes.
Keep the applause, pay them properly. As with all essential workers. Nurses, aides, grocery workers, ag workers, warehouse workers, etc.
While reading your comment, I'm reminded of the late Mr. George Westinghouse.
Thank you🥰🥰🥰
So it’s all about the money?
@@donchristiangonzales4675 Not _all_ about the money, but it does matter; it's about being compensated for the job they do. A fair day's wage for a fair day's work.

While I'm living a comfortable life in my home country, the Philippines. Some of my fellow filipinos are working in other country, sacrificing their lives for the sake other people.
We need reforms in Philippine Health industry.
Dear filipinos, please appreciate our health workers. 🙏
And american citizens. Please stop being racist to all Asians. Not every Asians are Chinese people. 😔
At least they earn more than you do in a year. They still live more comfortably than you do.
@@romella_karmey lmao did you just assume her salary? Just because we live in the Philippines, doesn't mean we have a low salary lol. Did you also consider the cost of living between both countries? Heck, you can even have a decent meal here for only 2 dollars, a city apartment rent for 200 dollars with the same standard as that of Western city apartments. Stop being condescending wtf. You're literally romanticizing and glorifying their suffering.

Filipino migrants are very hardworking no matter what their profession. Leaving our Motherland is not easy for us. So if we live our country and migrate , that means we are committed to work hard. We face racism very often, and it’s invisible to the eyes of many. It even become a norm for many Filipinos, that they just ignored it and move on. But sometimes it’s too much, I encountered one “Karen”, and i had enough. I posted it my channel.

Around the world nurses are working hard in all hospitals.
When people choose a work, if needed in front they must be there like any others, good luck to you all nursery and doctors in front line.
We choosed who we are, who we become! Love yourself and keep a good job!
In the first place, nurses in the Philippines should be paid the right way. People should not expect nurses and other professionals to stay here in the country and offer their expertise while not paying them enough to support themselves and their family.
Thanks you very very much for your service.
The Filipino nurses were multi talented in all context of professionalism but we the Filipino nurses were not that assertive in our way to always depend for our rights as a human being. Anywhere in the world we should always fight for our rights no matter what. Stand for it. Hurray
Keep safe my kaPilipinos...🙏🙏🙏
My experience as a Nurse in the Philippines is one of the worst. After graduating, I have to pay the hospital to be able for me to work as a volunteer. After 1 year I transfered to a private hospital and my salary/month is equivalent to more or less 95 USD. Nobody wants $95 a month, I have to move out of the country.
Regardless of your social standing, ethnicity or political beliefs, you or somebody you care for, will need the assistance and help of the medical community. These people are absolute Gems in society and they should be rightly treated so.
Best nurses in the world.
I don't know why someone will thumbs down the video. Shame on all of you!
i remember my first duty experience in the hospital here in Philippines.its a public hospital. and we were assigned in the ward section. and in the hallway i saw a female doctor reviving a 15 years old patient .. i was really scared to witness that event . on my first day of duty exposure . reviving a patient in the hallway.apparently theres no more room in the icu facilities.. and there's a lot of cases of dengue that day so there's a lot patient to be taken care of... i realize how important their job is sacrificing their whole life forthe profession they choose. ever if the hospital there working doesnt have enough equipment and good facilities to work. but still they choose to work whole heartedly. with kidness. and compassion.. its so sad to think that there not earning what they deserve for . . can u imagine there are people out there whos willing to pay millions of dollars to watch a famous celebrity in their . i truly believe thats this compassionate nurses deserve also to be paid higer wages . they deserve to be acknowledge .
But i will give all my salute and respect to our local frontliners who choose to stay and serve our poor countrymen to help , care and treat our sick people especially these pandemic times despite of their low salaries compared to their contemporary frontliners abroad! God bless you our local frontliners .....You are our heroes! May God protect you always! I'm so proud of our local frontliners , youre a God-send brave health warriors to our sick kababayans!
Thank you for the appreciation, but please don't judge nurses for working abroad. They just don't have a choice, working in countries that can compensate them with a rightful amount is their way to survive. Not all nurses in the Philippines are regularly employed most of them are contractual without benefits. You wouldn't know how hard it is until you become one.
I did not say anything about nurses working abroaf but rather i appreciated and admired more nurses who choose to stay in these pandemic times....and serve the country......i understand the situation.....
